However, Nick Kurtz and Jacob Wilson have had standout seasons as Major League Baseball rookies. They, along with Roman Anthony, are the favorites for the AL Rookie of the Year Award.</p><p>While <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-roman-anthony-earns-spotless-review-alex-bregman-homer-yankees">Anthony has had his moments with the Boston Red Sox</a>, the AL ROTY competition is a two-man race. No matter who walks away with the award, the Athletics will have a reason to celebrate. Comparing the two players is where things get difficult, though. At different points in the season, each player has had their fair share of All-Star moments. Picking a winner is really tough.</p><p>Making a case for Kurtz and Wilson is really easy, but deciding who has the edge isn’t. However, looking at season-long numbers and their impact in the field and at the plate, Wilson deserves to hold a slight lead heading down the stretch of the season. His balance, along with the value his brings on defense sets him apart from any of his peers, including Kurtz on his own team.</p><p>Kotsay has said great things about Wilson throughout the season. If he continues on his current trajectory, the Athletics could find themselves back in contention in the AL much sooner than expected. However, adding a ROTY award to his trophy case would set Wilson up well for the future. Based on the totality of his season, he has earned the right to walk away as the top rookie.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/athletics/athletics-news-jacob-wilson-lands-il-fractured-forearm">Wilson’s injury closed the gap</a> significantly in the race. However, here is why he should be the Athletics player winning AL ROTY this season.</p><h2>Jacob Wilson’s season has more balance than Nick Kurtz’s</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Jacob-Wilson.jpg"><figcaption>Wendell Cruz-Imagn Images.</figcaption></figure><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/athletics/athletics-nick-kurtz-reacts-4-hr-game-astros">Kurtz had one of the best singular games MLB has ever seen</a> earlier this season. The rookie slugger’s second half is one of the more impressive efforts in the entire league. Because of that, the first baseman’s momentum in the AL ROTY race has grown exponentially during the waning months of the season. While he rose up, Wilson’s season fell under the radar by comparison.</p><p>The shortstop took the league by storm in the opening month. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/athletics/athletics-news-jacob-wilson-shares-special-moment-father-jack-all-star-game">Wilson even earned an All-Star nod</a>, starting in the Mid-Summer Classic in Jeremy Peña’s space. Despite all of his success, he could not stay on the field for the Athletics throughout the entire regular season. However, that should not work against him when it comes to competing for the award at the end of the year.</p><p>Looking at the numbers, the gap is not as big as people currently think. At first glance, Kurtz’s numbers appear to blow Wilson out of the water. However, a closer inspection shows a gap in efficiency. Wilson has <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/stats/_/id/4719300/jacob-wilson" rel="noopener">just 34 strikeouts</a> heading into Tuesday’s action compared to Kurtz’s 127. The first baseman is effective when he hits the ball, but the shortstop is the more efficient batter.</p><p>The fact that strikeout rate and total WAR figure into the conversation show just how close the race is. Anthony figures to place third while the Athletics fight for the top spot. Kurtz appears to have run away with things, but Wilson is right there with him. Taking away the flashy plays at the plate for the first baseman, Wilson is the more well-rounded baseball player between the two.</p><h2>Wilson carries more responsibility than Kurtz on the Athletics</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Jacob-Wilson-in-MLB-debut.jpg"><figcaption>Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/athletics/athletics-news-nick-kurtz-completes-mlb-feat-1901">Kurtz has become the Athletics’ main slugger</a> throughout the second half of the season. However, Wilson was the team’s leadoff hitter whenever he was healthy in the first part of the season. As important as the long ball has become in MLB, having a good leadoff hitter is crucial to a good offensive team. Wilson’s .300+ batting average made him an invaluable spark plug.</p><p>Wilson does not only play a more important role than Kurtz at the plate. He also plays arguably the most difficult defensive position. For a rookie, a -0.4 dWAR is not bad for a shortstop. Wilson is not going to win a Gold Glove Award this season, but the rookie plays a crucial role in Kotsay’s defense. The only question is how much the voters care about the entirety of Wilson’s game.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/athletics/athletics-news-nick-kurtz-gets-100-real-on-al-roy-competition-with-teammate">Kurtz is the favorite to win the AL ROTY Award</a> at this point in the year. Wilson has some time to close the gap, but he should not have to do much. In his free time, he very much enjoys binge-watching shows and playing video games.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Athletics</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/athletics/athletics-news-jacob-wilson-lands-il-fractured-forearm">Athletics reinstated All-Star shortstop Jacob Wilson</a> from the 10-day injured list Friday, giving them <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/jacob-wilson-reinstated-from-injured-list" rel="noopener">a major boost</a> ahead of their weekend series against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park, according to Martin Gallegos of MLB.com.</p><p>Wilson had been sidelined since late July with a left forearm fracture. Initially, the 23-year-old attempted to play through a left hand contusion after being hit by a pitch on July 8, but his condition worsened following an early exit against Houston on July 25. An MRI revealed the fracture, placing him on the injured list retroactive to July 26.</p><p>At the time of the injury, Wilson was batting .312 with 10 home runs and 45 RBIs. He had started the season as one of baseball’s most consistent hitters, carrying a .335 average before the hand injury contributed to a 4-for-38 slump that dropped him to .312. Nevertheless, Wilson still leads all rookies with 115 hits and ranks second among American League rookies in both batting average and home runs.</p><p>Wilson’s recovery included a four-game rehab assignment with Triple-A Las Vegas beginning Aug. 16, where he went 3-for-14 with a home run and a double. More importantly, he was able to swing without pain, clearing the way for his activation.</p><p>The A’s, who entered the Seattle series winners of eight of their last 11 games and holding MLB’s second-best record since July 24 at 17-8 (trailing only the Brewers’ 19-7 mark), welcome Wilson back into a lineup already producing at a high level.</p><p>The Athletics offense has been powered by fellow rookie Nick Kurtz, whose .350/.448/.764 slash line since May 20 led all Major League hitters with at least 200 plate appearances entering Friday. Kurtz’s surge has vaulted him to the top of the Rookie of the Year race, a competition Wilson was leading for much of the season before his injury.</p><p>Drafted sixth overall in 2023 out of Grand Canyon University, Wilson remains an essential table setter for a lineup that also features Shea Langeliers, Brent Rooker, and Tyler Soderstrom. His return not only lengthens the batting order but also restores defensive stability at shortstop.</p><p>Friday’s roster moves extended beyond Wilson’s activation. Rookie starter Jack Perkins was placed on the 15-day injured list with a strained right shoulder. Perkins, who debuted on June 22, has gone 3-2 with a 4.19 ERA and three saves in 12 appearances, including four starts. Left-hander Ben Bowden was also placed on the 15-day IL with a strained left lat after recording a 4.22 ERA across 11 relief outings.</p><p>To fill those gaps, right-handers Joey Estes and Eduarniel Nunez were recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas, while infielder Max Schuemann was optioned back to Las Vegas to make room for Wilson.</p><p>Wilson’s return comes right in the middle of a breakout season, one that already earned him his first All-Star nod in 2025. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-news-cal-raleigh-no-answers-jacob-wilson">He made history as the first rookie shortstop ever voted in by the fans</a> and only the third A’s player since 1993 to start the game.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

But with a recent injury landing a key piece on the IL, any glimmer of hope has been vanquished. Athletics shortstop Jacob Wilson is on the injured list with a right forearm fracture after <a href="https://x.com/BNightengale/status/1950301429408862543" rel="noopener">getting hit by a pitch.</a></p><p>“Jacob Wilson, the Athletics rookie All-Star shortstop who was a rookie of the year candidate, goes on the injured list with a fractured right forearm,” Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported.</p><p>Wilson started the MLB All-Star Game at shortstop and had a .793 OPS at the time of his injury. He is a Rookie of the Year candidate in the American League, but his campaign just got stopped. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/athletics/athletics-news-nick-kurtz-gets-100-real-on-al-roy-competition-with-teammate">Athletics have another Rookie of the Year contender in Nick Kurtz</a>, who may just steal the title from his teammate in the interim.</p><p>The hit by pitch ends a rough stretch for Wilson as the Athletics continue to struggle. He has a .140 batting average and .409 OPS in July after entering the month hitting .339 with a .853 OPS. Despite those numbers, he was still playing a strong shortstop and could have been Rookie of the Year.</p><p>The Athletics can have Max Muncy or Max Schuemann play shortstop while Wilson is out. They can play the position and are not trade candidates. Miguel Andujar, Gio Urshela, and Luis Arias should be on the move before the MLB trade deadline. Even without Wilson, they should be able to fill out their infield and sell off pieces at the trade deadline.</p><p>The Athletics lost the game on Monday to the Seattle Mariners, and finish out the three-game series on Wednesday. That gives them all day Thursday to make trades and set themselves up for a strong future. This season, three will represent their teams in the All-Star game, and one of them will be the starting shortstop for the American League.</p><p>The Athletics’ Jacob Wilson is an old-school player who also happens to be one of the top hitters in the league during his rookie season. Only one player has a higher batting average than the rookie (.332), and that happens to be AL MVP Aaron Judge (.355).</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/athletics/athletics-news-historic-rookie-all-star-status-danger-injury">Wilson injured his hand a few games ago</a>, and his status for this game is still up in the air. He is projected to bat ninth for <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-gleyber-torres-surprised-aaron-boone-all-star-game-lineup-decision">Aaron Boone’s AL lineup</a>, as he was announced a starter. Wilson returned from the injury over the weekend and finished the series against the Toronto Blue Jays. Just as <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/athletics/athletics-news-brent-rookers-hr-derby-elimination-has-fans-setting-social-media-ablaze">Brent Rooker did in the Home Run Derby</a> on Monday night, Wilson should represent the Athletics in the All-Star Game.</p><p>New York Yankees starting pitcher Carlos Rodon caught up with Wilson <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2025/07/15/jacob-wilson-athletics-all-star-game/85202200007/" rel="noopener">during the All-Star festivities</a>. This break is an opportunity for all the All-Stars to get to know one another. When Rodon saw Wilson in the clubhouse, he had to let the rookie know that he wasn’t like the others.</p><p>“I said, ‘Dude, I’m looking at scouting reports on you and it says to throw fastballs up and in because you’re not supposed to have any hard contact.’ I throw a four-seamer up and in, and you hit a double off me. Come on.”</p><p>Rodon continued on about Wilson when talking with Bob Nightengale.</p><p>“You don’t know what to expect with a guy that has low-miss, and can put up quality contact out there,” Rodon said. “It’s not fair. What do I do with a guy like this? You’re not going to strike him out. So, you’re trying to get a pitch that limits launch or limits exit velocity, and hopefully he gets out. That’s what makes it tough, especially when you have a guy on base, because he’s more than likely to drive that run in because of the ability to put the bat on the ball.”</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
