The team went 41-121, breaking the 1962 New York Mets record of 120 losses. Manager Pedro Grifol was fired in the middle of his second season, and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/white-sox-news-gm-chris-getz-wants-team-to-embrace-historically-bad-situation">GM Chris Getz is gearing up</a> for potentially very long rebuild. Realistically, there’s nowhere for the White Sox to go but up. Although the course that Getz follows in this rebuild will be heavily reliant on whom he selects as the team’s next manager.</p><p>Could it be interim manager Grady Sizemore, who went 13-32 in his 45 games in charge? An outside hire that has experience with rebuilding clubs, like former Chicago Cubs skipper David Ross or Skip Schumaker, who left the Miami Marlins after two years in charge? Or a rising coach that is ready to grow alongside a young team, such as Milwaukee Brewers associate manager Rickie Weeks Jr. and Pirates bench coach Don Kelly?</p><p>The managerial field is filled with plenty of options, and it will be intriguing to see who Getz selects. If he gets it right, then he will likely have a job with the White Sox for as long as he wants. Owner Jerry Reinsdorf is certainly loyal, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5773947/2024/09/19/white-sox-failure-worst-season-history/" rel="noopener">sometimes to a fault.</a> After appointing the next on-field boss, Getz must work with them to bring in free agents that will make the club better in at least a short-term aspect. Preferably players that would be good trade bait or are coming off lost seasons and could potentially contribute to a young roster that is short on veteran leadership.</p><p>Players who fit those criteria, and a few others, are broken down below. Leading off the list: a former National League MVP that could potentially switch sides of the Second City, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-cody-bellinger-opt-out-plan-excite-cubs">Cubs outfielder Cody Bellinger.</a> Would the center fielder opt out of his deal with the Cubbies to pursue a more secure future? It’s certainly not out of the question.</p><h2><b>1. Could Cody Bellinger switch from North Side to South Side?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Chicago-Cubs-OF-Cody-Bellinger.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: Kyle Ross-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Coming off a solid 2.2 WAR season in his second season at the Friendly Confines, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cubs-news-cody-bellinger-injury-return-chicago">Bellinger has an opt out</a> that he could exercise this offseason. The question is, would he receive a multiyear pact with more value than his $27.5 million choice he has coming up? In the right circumstances, he certainly could. Furthermore, it feels as if the White Sox could be a club that would offer him more money and years on his next deal.</p><p>A .266 batting average to go along with 18 home runs, 78 RBI and nine stolen bases is a pretty good season. Not as good as his 2023 season (his numbers were quite a bit higher across the board then), or his 2019 NL MVP season. But for a club like the South Siders, last year’s numbers would be a welcome sight in their lineup. Also, he could bring the veteran leadership that a team like the Sox could use. Will he opt out of his deal with the North Siders? And if he did, would he move across town and call Guaranteed Rate Field home? It is a possibility that could happen come this winter.</p><h2><b>2. Kenley Jansen would provide veteran leadership for White Sox bullpen</b></h2><p>Another strong veteran leader could be Jansen, who has plied his trade with the Boston Red Sox for the past two seasons. The longtime closer mostly plied his trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and also played with the Atlanta Braves in 2022 before heading to Beantown. Now, the 37-year-old is heading into his 16th season in the majors, and possibly towards his fourth team.</p><p>Would he want to join a rebuilding team? Or pursue a role with a club that could provide him with another championship? At this point in his career, money would likely be not <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/red-sox-news-closer-kenley-jansen-sent-home-manager-alex-cora">as concerning to Jansen</a> as it possibly was earlier in his major league tenure. A role leading a young White Sox bullpen could very well interest him, especially if a role with a contender isn’t satisfactory. Jansen has outside chance at 500 saves, as he currently has 447 following his time with the Dodgers, Braves and Red Sox. Could a chance at 500 happen with the Pale Hose?</p><h2><b>3. John Means has ability to be short-term ace for White Sox</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Baltimore-Orioles-SP-John-Means.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: Jeff Curry-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Starting off with the bad news: <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/orioles-news-john-means-unfortunate-injury-concerns-continue-latest-update">Means underwent Tommy John surgery</a> in May, and likely wouldn’t return until sometime in 2025. However, a two-year deal for the veteran left-hander would be something that we’ve seen a lot of clubs do over the past few years. Have them rehab from the surgery in their first season with the team and return in year two full time. Based on the timing of his injury, he could very well return next season.</p><p>Current staff ace Garrett Crochet is reportedly on the trade block and could be moved for a hefty package of prospects. It would behoove the Sox to keep Crochet, but in either scenario, adding Means wouldn’t be a bad choice. Just like Bellinger and Jansen, the 31-year-old would be a good influence for the young Chicago pitching staff. It’s a role that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/orioles-news-john-means-gets-real-on-making-first-start-for-baltimore-since-tommy-john-surgery">Means has already performed</a> during his time with the Baltimore Orioles. If the timing and fit are right, then he could be the number one or two starter for a team that looks to make a leap just like the O’s have made in the recent past.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The White Sox procrastinated the inevitable with a mini-winning streak at the end of their season, but they officially set the record for the most losses in a season in the modern era, which dates back to 1901. The team finished the 2024 season with a 41-121 record.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/white-sox-news-tommy-pham-quote-highlights-embarrassing-fact-about-chicago">White Sox embarrassed their fanbase</a> all season long. Chicago wasn’t the only team in the modern era to put up a jaw-droppingly bad record, though.</p><p>In this article, we are going to look at the 10 MLB teams with the most losses in a single season in MLB history since 1901. We had to go back over a century to find teams whose records compared to Chicago’s this year, but no one during that time ever had more losses than the White Sox did in 2024.</p><h2><b>1. 2024 Chicago White Sox (41-121)</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Luis-Robert-and-Andrew-Benintendi.jpeg"><figcaption>Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The White Sox finished their season out strong, winning five of their last six games. It prevented them from finishing with a record much worse than the second-worst team ever, but it wasn’t enough to avoid the title.</p><p>It was not long ago that the White Sox were looked at as one of the rising teams in the MLB. Their talent couldn’t stay healthy, though, and Chicago was forced to embrace a full blown rebuild. That rebuild saw the departures of a number of big names through the trade market. Notably, Eloy Jimenez, Dylan Cease, Erick Fedde, Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez, Lance Lynn, Joe Kelly, Jake Burger, and many more were traded over the last year or so.</p><p>Because of that, a lot of losses were expected coming into the year, but no one could have guessed the White Sox would drop 121 games. Players such as Luis Robert and Garrett Crochet are considered some of the best players in baseball, yet the White Sox couldn’t score more runs than opposing teams all season.</p><p>Their 121-loss season goes down in the record books, and it could take decades until it is ever broken. There isn’t a lot of hope for the future, either. While the White Sox shouldn’t lose this many games next year, it is possible their <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-phillies-linked-garrett-crochet-trade-white-sox-contract-comments">fire sale continues</a> and their roster outlook is even more bleak next season.</p><h2><b>2. 1962 New York Mets (40-120)</b></h2><p>Being an expansion team in MLB is never easy. Expansion teams often don’t have the talent on their roster to compete with the rest of the league, and that was evident in the Mets’ first season. Prior to the White Sox’s 2024 failure, the Mets held the record for the most losses in the modern era in their very first season.</p><p>The rotation was the Mets’ biggest problem area. New York’s starting pitchers combined for only 23 wins all season long. Pitching was far from the Mets’ only issue, though. Not only was their ERA the worst in baseball, but so was their batting average and their fielding percentage, meaning the Mets were pathetic at all aspects of baseball in 1962.</p><p>New York would continue to struggle over the coming years. They won 51, 53, and 50 games in the next three seasons, respectively. The team did eventually break out and win the World Series in 1969, though, but they’ve largely struggled for the most part ever since the poor start to their franchise’s existence.</p><h2><b>3. 2003 Detroit Tigers (43-119)</b></h2><p>After there being no 115-plus loss seasons in MLB since the ’60s, the 2003 Tigers went out and lost 119 games. That stood as the most losses in American League history until the 2024 White Sox dropped 121 games. Detroit had a -337 run differential over the course of the season.</p><p>The team’s batting average was only .240, and they were equally as bad throwing the baseball, as the team’s ERA was 5.30. The team started out the season with a 1-17 record. By winning five of their last six games, the Tigers actually saved themselves from ranking even worse on this list. Despite the disastrous campaign, the Tigers would bounce back and make the World Series only three years later.</p><h2><b>4. 1916 Philadelphia Athletics (36-117)</b></h2><p>While they only have the fourth-most losses in MLB history, the Philadelphia Athletics actually hold the record for worst winning percentage ever (since 1901). In 1916, they finished the year with a winning percentage of .235, meaning this season was arguably even worse than the White Sox’s most recent campaign.</p><p>Amazingly, this horrendous season occurred only three years after the Athletics had won their third championship in a four year span. They even made the World Series as recently as 1914. The sudden collapse of a true dynasty was due to the team being forced to let their best players go, either via trade or release. Winning led to the team being unable to pay all of their star talent, so they focused their eyes on the future.</p><p>Even after the frustrating year, manager Connie Mack’s job was never in doubt. Mack ended up managing the team until 1951, and he even won two more World Series.</p><h2><b>5. 1935 Boston Braves (38-115)</b></h2><p>Babe Ruth is known for his winning ways, but when he was the vice president and assistant manager of the Boston Braves in 1935, his team didn’t do a lot of winning. Ruth is one of the first examples in sports of a legendary player not finding the same levels of success as a coach/front office member.</p><p>Ruth was also a player on this team. At age 40, Ruth played his first season outside of the Boston Red Sox/New York Yankees organizations, but he was a shell of his former self. Ruth was so bad that some of his teammates threatened to go on strike if he was in the team’s lineup. Ruth did muster up a three home run game in one of his last few games, but he retired early into the season. Even without him, the Braves still struggled.</p><p>Ben Cantwell became the last pitcher in the 21st century to lose at least 25 games in a season, and the Braves ended the year with 115 losses.</p><h2><b>6. 2018 Baltimore Orioles (47-115)</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Chris-Davis.jpeg"><figcaption>Jonathan Dyer-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>There is hope for the White Sox because years of lots of losing by the Baltimore Orioles not so long ago led to them orchestrating an incredible rebuild. Now, Baltimore is one of the best teams in baseball. Back in 2018, they were really bad. Before acquiring a talented young roster and building an exciting farm system, the Orioles had to lose in order to get such high draft picks and prestigious prospects.</p><p>The worst of their losing came in 2018 when the team dropped 115 games. They were 60 games behind their division rival Boston Red Sox, which was the biggest games back deficit since 1935. The team couldn’t find success against anybody, as they had a losing record against every single American League team.</p><p>Until the White Sox surpassed them this year, the Orioles held the record for quickest time being eliminated from playoff contention in the divisional era (since 1969). Chris Davis was the headliner of their struggles. His home run prowess resulted in a seven-year, $161 million deal, but the power hitter saw major regression after putting pen to paper. In what was just his third year under the new deal, Davis batted .168 and had a -2.7 WAR. It was the worst WAR by any player since the 2011 season.</p><p>The Orioles’ disastrous season was necessary in pushing the team in a different direction. Tanking isn’t as common in MLB as it is in the NBA, but this was the closest we’ve seen to it in recent memory in baseball. It worked out for Baltimore, too. The Orioles have had <a href="https://www.masnsports.com/blog/an-oriole-three-peat-three-years-three-different-no-1-ranked-prospects" rel="noopener">three different prospects</a> be ranked as the number one prospect in baseball since this season, and they should now contend for World Series titles for the next decade or so.</p><h2><b>7. 2019 Detroit Tigers (47-114)</b></h2><p>A year after the Orioles had a disastrous season, the Tigers had one nearly as bad. Detroit also only won 47 games, but they had one fewer loss than Baltimore did the year prior. This is because the Tigers only played 161 games, as a late-season rainout was never rescheduled due to the Tigers and their opponent, the White Sox, missing the playoffs.</p><p>If it wasn’t for that rainout, the Tigers could have tied the Orioles’ record from the year prior. Detroit’s season actually started off well. They won seven of their first 11 games before losing 111 of 151 to follow. Detroit particularly struggled at home. Their 59 home losses were tied for the most in the modern era.</p><p>Like the Orioles, the Tigers’ poor play led to some good draft picks, and now they are back in the playoffs. The 2024 postseason will be the Tigers’ first time playing after the regular season since 2014.</p><p>The Tigers’ horrendous 2019 season makes them the only team to appear twice on this list of the 10 worst seasons in MLB history. Additionally, with three of the worst 10 teams ever being within the last decade, the likelihood of teams being historically bad is proving to be higher than ever before. The way rosters are constructed and the way the game is played these days has contributed to that.</p><h2><b>8. 1904 Washington Senators (38-113)</b></h2><p>While there have been some new school teams who have struggled mightily, the Washington Senators team from 1904 is the oldest team to qualify as one of the worst in the modern era, as their 38-113 season was just a few years after the modern era began.</p><p>The Senators’ season was doomed to fail from the start, as they started off 0-13-1 before collecting their first win. The Boston Americans gave Washington the most problems, as the Senators went 2-20 against that team in 1904.</p><p>The Senators’ season was so disappointing that the biggest crowd after the team’s Opening Day game was <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2023/05/01/worst-washington-baseball-team-ever/" rel="noopener">against an amateur team</a>, as many showed up in belief that the amateurs would beat the professionals. That didn’t end up being the case, as the Senators proved that there are levels to sports with a 17-0 win.</p><h2><b>9. 1952 Pittsburgh Pirates (42-112)</b></h2><p>Prior to the modern era, high-loss seasons were relatively common. The Pittsburgh baseball team that went by the nickname the Alleghenys in 1890 lost 113 games, but that season doesn’t count for this list, as we are only looking at teams from 1901 and onward. Still, the 1952 baseball season in Pittsburgh was pretty bad, too.</p><p>The Pirates went 42-112 that year. But, that does not mean that they are not going to try their absolute best to potentially prevent one of their division rivals from making the postseason.</p><p>Speaking to the media ahead of Wednesday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels, White Sox interim manager Grady Sizemore explained his decision to <a href="https://twitter.com/scottmerkin/status/1839059666917085222" rel="noopener">push back</a> All-Star Garrett Crochet’s final appearance of the regular season to have him face the Detroit Tigers, per Scott Merkin of MLB.com.</p><p>“With Detroit where they’re at, I think it’s gonna make for good baseball,” Sizemore said. “They’re gonna be competing for a playoff spot. We wanna throw our best guy up against this team that’s fighting for a playoff spot. These are our rivals.”</p><p>Crochet was initially projected to start Thursday against the Angels. However, Sizemore’s decision to push Crochet back will give his team the best chance to beat the Tigers, one of their rivals in the AL Central, and potentially prevent them from making the postseason.</p><p>The Tigers are currently tied with the Kansas City Royals for the final American League Wild Card position, with the Minnesota Twins and Seattle Mariners both two games back and the Boston Red Sox 3 1/2 games back. Things are looking good as of now for the Tigers, with FanGraphs <a href="https://www.fangraphs.com/standings/playoff-odds" rel="noopener">projecting them</a> to have an 87.1% chance of making the postseason. However, that final series against the White Sox could be crucial, and facing Crochet is never an easy task. White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr. has struggled in 2024, and <a href="https://x.com/scottmerkin/status/1839055318321607008" rel="noopener">he recently took partial blame</a> for the team’s frustrating campaign.</p><p>“One of the biggest parts of the bad season that we have as a team is because I haven’t been able to do what I’m able to do on the field,” Robert said, via Scott Merkin of MLB.com “That’s on me.”</p><p>Robert was once regarded as a future superstar. He had dealt with injuries in previous seasons which explained why he had not played up to his ceiling. That changed in 2023 when Robert received MVP votes and hit 38 home runs to go along with a strong .857 OPS.</p><p>In 2024, though, Robert is slashing just .224/.276/.379/.655. He’s also only hit 14 home runs. It is worth noting that the White Sox outfielder has been limited to 97 games played as of this story’s writing, but that doesn’t change the fact that Robert has disappointed while on the field.</p><p>Chicago is rebuilding. One has to wonder if Robert is still in their long-term plans. If not, he may emerge as a trade candidate this offseason. Chicago strung together a three-run frame, with Andrew Benintendi’s RBI single scoring the winning win. It was the first time the White Sox have won <a href="https://x.com/scottmerkin/status/1838805656788181117" rel="noopener">while trailing after seven innings</a>. They were previously 0-94, via Scott Merkin of MLB.com.</p><p>While they won on Tuesday, the White Sox are still on the doorstep of MLB infamy. At 120 losses, they are only one defeat away from setting a new Modern era record. How Chicago handles their organizational overhaul is a different story.</p><p>The first step will be finding a new manager. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/white-sox-news-will-hire-grady-sizemore-next-manager">Grady Sizemore stepped in</a> on an interim basis after Pedro Grifol’s firing. Perhaps Chicago prefers the continuance and removes the interim tag. Or, they go for a complete reset and look outside the organization.</p><p>But whoever is managing won’t have much firepower to work with with how the White Sox are constructed. Yoan Moncada seems likely to have his $25 million club option declined. That would leave Andrew Benintendi, Luis Robert Jr. and Max Stassi – who also has a club option – as the only players past arbitration on their roster. Even if the White Sox offered the moon, they are going to struggle mightily attracting anyone to Chicago.</p><p>The team has drafted well, as their top three prospects are home grown talents, via MLB Pipeline. But with just four prospects total in the top 100, it could be a long wait until contention in Chicago.</p><p>While the White Sox survived another day without setting disastrous history, Chicago fans are just waiting for it. A meaningless late season win means nothing to them. They want to see their team be actually competitive. The happy news for the White Sox is that they won their most recent game, coming back from a late deficit to beat the Angels 3-2 on Tuesday in Chicago.</p><p>If the White Sox lose another game this week, that will be loss No. 121, which would be more than the 1962 New York Mets, which went 40-120. No other team in MLB history since the start of the World Series in 1903 has lost more than 120 games. The White Sox are unlikely to avoid losing Game 121. However, they can still avoid other dubious distinctions.</p><p>If Chicago wins one more game this week (through Sunday, Sept. 29), it will avoid becoming the fourth team in the World Series era (since 1903) to win fewer than 38 games in a season. If Chicago wins two more games this week, it will avoid having the worst winning percentage (.235) of any team in the World Series era.</p><p>As miserable and brutal as this season has been, the White Sox and their fans have to at least appreciate the reality that this team is still fighting hard. The Sox trailed the Angels 2-0 after seven and a half innings on Tuesday but scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to win. The White Sox haven’t lost because of laziness. They have lost because they are historically inept. Yet, the team is still playing hard, and maybe that can become the source of a distinctly better season with improved results in 2025.</p><h2><b>Angels-White Sox Projected Starters </b></h2><p><b>Jose Suarez </b> vs. <b><b>Davis Martin</b></b></p><p><b>Jose Suarez</b> (1-2) has a 6.08 ERA. Suarez has been getting some work as a starter after previously being a relief pitcher earlier in the 2024 season. These late-season starts are basically test drives to see if Suarez should be used as a back-end rotation starter or a middle reliever for the Angels when the 2025 season begins. At 36-120 they’re one defeat away from finishing the season with the most losses in modern MLB history – a mark they can reach Tuesday evening in their home matchup against the Los Angeles Angels. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/white-sox-fire-pedro-grifol-amid-historically-bad-2024-campaign">White Sox fired manager Pedro Grifol</a> after he posted a record of 89-190 in less than two seasons.</p><p>Chicago named former player <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/white-sox-news-chicago-guardians-star-grady-sizemore-interim-manager">Grady Sizemore as the team’s interim manager</a> in early August. Since taking over as the South Side skipper, Sizemore has led the team to an 8-30 record. His .211 winning percentage is worse than the .319 percentage that got Grifol fired. It’s even worse than the White Sox 2024 winning percentage, which sits at an embarrassing .231.</p><p>Still, someone needs to helm this hapless team. And White Sox general manager Chris Getz says that Sizemore is <a href="https://x.com/scottmerkin/status/1838680234293408119" rel="noopener">being considered</a> to take over as manager full time, per MLB.com’s Scott Merkin on X. It is the second straight year Chicago finished with 100 losses.</p><p>True, the White Sox made the playoffs in two of the previous three seasons. However, before that, the team finished with a losing record for seven consecutive years from 2013-2019. In his position as special advisor to the executive vice president the 79-year-old Hall of Famer, who managed the team until the 2022 season, offers his wisdom to the manager and coaches – for whatever that’s worth.</p><p>The White Sox have been thoroughly run into the ground, as evidenced by their abysmal record. With all manner of dysfunction from the very top down, it’s highly unlikely that Chicago will attract top-tier managerial talent to the South Side. That piece of history is likely to be made this week.</p><p>Other pieces of history are less certain, but they are very much in play.</p><p>Only five teams in the modern era of Major League Baseball (since 1901) have won fewer than 40 games in a season. The White Sox are one of them. They will need to go 4-2 in their final six games to avoid remaining one of those five teams.</p><p>Only three MLB teams since 1901 have won fewer than 38 games in a season. The White Sox need two wins in their final six to reach 38, three to exceed 38.</p><p>The other piece of history the White Sox could make: the lowest winning percentage of any MLB team since 1901. The White Sox currently have a .231 winning percentage, the worst of any team in the majors over the past 123 years. The 1916 Philadelphia Athletics had a .235 winning percentage. Chicago needs to split its final six games to finish above .235. If Chicago wins two of six, it will finish at .235 (rounded up from .2347).</p><p>Just how much history are the 2024 Chicago White Sox ready to make?
