The 26-year-old has been great in his rookie season, especially as of late for the National League West leaders. He is fifth on the team in hits, sixth in RBI and has played very strong defense in one of the toughest positions.</p><p>It hasn’t been a total cakewalk for Outman, though, as he struggled in the middle of the season, posting an OPS just above .550 in both May and June. The center fielder has learned how to deal with his struggles, according to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic: stay calm and <a href="https://theathletic.com/4764331/2023/08/10/james-outman-dodgers-rookie-season/" rel="noopener">don’t get overly frustrated</a>.</p><p>“I’ve learned over the years, being angry doesn’t help me much,” Outman said, via The Athletic. “For me, if I get angry, I put myself in a deeper hole. … You take everything in stride and deal with it. If I’m not joking around, then I’m going to be miserable because I’m not playing well and I’m being serious. So I might as well have fun with it.”</p><p>Having such a mature mindset will undoubtedly help Outman navigate his career. The Dodgers will most likely be playing a lot of playoff baseball in the years to come. They will need all their key players ready for the spotlight. Outman’s ability to laugh off his struggles suggests he has what it takes, as Dodgers manager Dave Roberts explained.</p><p>“He always had a little bit of levity with his struggles,” Roberts said, via The Athletic. “I think that’s really telling for a young player. To be a little self-deprecating. To make some jokes about it.”</p><p>The Dodgers have plenty of stars to rely on, so James Outman will never have to be tasked with carrying a huge offensive load. Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman remain the best of the best and Will Smith and J.D. Martinez have been great, too. Outman gives the Dodgers and team-controlled player that allows them to keep spending heavily on the roster. His all-around production has been impressive, but it is his resiliency that has stood out.</p><p>When Outman kicked off the ’23 campaign by playing well, most people around the league knew it was only a matter of time before he found himself in a slump. That statement isn’t anything against Outman, rather, it’s the nature of baseball. Even the best players in the league struggle at the plate at times. The question people wondered is how Outman would respond to adversity.</p><p>Outman did eventually find himself in a slump. The young outfielder didn’t break down, however. Instead, he continued to work hard and pulled himself out of it. As a result, he’s a legitimate National League Rookie of the Year candidate. LA trailed 7-3 at one point before climbing back to win 8-7. James Outman came through with a clutch walk-off hit in the 10th inning to propel the Dodgers to the win. Outman <a href="https://twitter.com/SportsNetLA/status/1684086555043074048" rel="noopener">addressed</a> LA’s victory after the affair, per SportsNet LA.</p><p>“It was a wild game,” Outman told Kirsten Watson of SportsNet LA. “We didn’t quit, we played until the last out and we came through with the win.”</p><p>James Outman will obviously be content with his walk-off hit. However, he missed a game-winning home run by a matter of inches as OF Kevin Kiermaier jumped at the wall to try and rob Outman. He was unable to make the catch, but the ball bounced off the fence and a run scored, ultimately giving the Dodgers the win. Outman also commented on his clutch moment.</p><p>“I was hoping it wasn’t caught,” Outman said. “I was just hoping it would land so we could win the game.”</p><h2><b>James Outman’s 2023 season with Dodgers</b></h2><p>James Outman <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dodgers-news-james-outman-grand-slam-twins" rel="noopener">started the season strong</a> but cooled off later in the campaign. He’s swung the bat better as of late though. Overall, the outfielder is slashing .247/.341/.427 with a .768 OPS and 12 home runs in his rookie season. He’s also done a nice job of playing center field and has 12 stolen bases to his credit.</p><p>Prior to Tuesday’s game, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dodgers-news-los-angeles-red-sox-engaged-kike-hernandez-trade-talks" rel="noopener">Dodgers acquired Kiké Hernandez</a> from the Boston Red Sox. Hernandez formerly played for the Dodgers and features elite versatility. He can play all over the outfield as well as second base and shortstop. Hernandez may take some bats away from Outman, since he’s expected to primarily face left-handed pitching. It doesn’t mean Hernandez and Outman will platoon every day in center field, but Outman will need to find more consistency at the plate to continue receiving regular playing time.</p><p>His effort on Tuesday will certainly help without question.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He studied journalism and communication at UConn.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">MLB</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The San Diego Padres came into the 2023 MLB season as favorites to win the National League West, and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dodgers-news-james-outman-grand-slam-twins" rel="noopener">James Outman</a> of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dodgers-news-dustin-may-gets-timetable-update-ahead-of-bobby-millers-mlb-debut" rel="noopener">Los Angeles Dodgers</a> said the team used that as bulletin board material, with Freddie Freeman specifically <a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/flippin-bats-with-ben-verlander/id1559847035?i=1000614277064" rel="noopener">bringing it up</a>.</p><p>“Yeah, it’s definitely heard,” James Outman said of the Padres hype prior to the 2023 season on the Flippin’ Bats podcast with Ben Verlander. “I think Freddie (Freeman) put it well, he was like, ‘yeah, we lost a bunch of guys, but you look at our lineup, we still have All-Star after All-Star.’”</p><p>It turns out that Freddie Freeman was right. The Dodgers are currently 31-19 and sit in first place in the National League West, 1.5 games ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks.  The San Diego Padres have been one of the biggest disappointments this season, currently holding a 22-26 record, sitting eight games back of the Dodgers. The Diamondbacks seem like a serious contender, so the Padres will have to compete with them as well.</p><p>James Outman is having a very solid rookie campaign, <a href="https://www.fangraphs.com/players/james-outman/24770/stats?position=OF" rel="noopener">hitting</a> .245 with a .333 on-base percentage and nine home runs, according to Fangraphs. He played four games last season, but this is his first full season in MLB.</p><p>Unsurprisingly, Freeman has been great this season, <a href="https://www.fangraphs.com/players/freddie-freeman/5361/stats?position=1B" rel="noopener">hitting</a> .327 with a .399 on-base percentage and nine home runs, according to Fangraphs.</p><p>It will be interesting to see if the Dodgers can win the National League West once again, this time dealing with a new challenger in the Diamondbacks. Outman bounced back with a clutch go-ahead grand slam on Wednesday to give the Dodgers a lead and eventual victory over the Minnesota Twins. Outman <a href="https://twitter.com/SportsNetLA/status/1658959915170533376" rel="noopener">credited his teammates</a> for keeping him positive during his slump prior to the grand slam, per SportsNet LA.</p><p>“Felt like a breath of fresh air to be honest,” Outman said of his big home run. “My teammates were keeping me positive through it (struggling at the plate). It was hard, but my teammates… they were great. They were giving me advice, helping me out and I’m really thankful for that.”</p><p>James Outman remains a strong candidate to win NL Rookie of the Year. He’s displayed impressive power ability and has been a consistent force in the Dodgers lineup. Los Angeles entered 2023 with questions in their outfield, but Outman has been a key piece to the puzzle.</p><p>Los Angeles ultimately took two of three from the Twins at Dodger Stadium to wrap up their homestand. They will now head on the road to take on the St. Louis Cardinals for the first series of a 10-game road trip. The Dodgers have been one of the hottest teams in baseball over the past few weeks and will try to continue their momentum away from home.</p><p>It will be interesting to see if James Outman can get back on track following his clutch moment in the Dodgers’ win over the Twins.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
