They’re a tough, tough matchup every single time, no matter who’s on the mound. Both Toronto and Tampa are in AL Wild Card spots as the second half begins.</p><p>This is the second time the Yankees and Blue Jays have faced off this year. They played a three-game series in The Bronx in April, which the Bombers won two games to one. But now, New York’s offense has gone cold while Toronto has gone 19-11 since May 26.</p><p>The Blue Jays are scheduled to send out Max Scherzer for his third start of the season. After signing a one-year deal this winter, he pitched just one game before getting hurt. While his Hall of Fame peak is behind him, he can still give them solid innings. Kevin Guasman and Jose Berrios follow him in the rotation. When he exited the mound, both of those numbers had ballooned. The lineup did not do him any favors, either, as John Schneider’s ballclub had a day to forget in Fenway Park. Alas, the dreadful outing will be etched in the history books.</p><p>The Blue Jays fell 15-1 to the Rex Sox, marking the <a href="https://x.com/SNstats/status/1939097192863801645" rel="noopener">largest margin of defeat</a> the franchise has ever suffered in Boston, per Sportsnet Stats. What a dramatic reversal of fortunes after Friday’s 9-0 victory. Toronto actually started off on a promising note, as Bassitt retired the first two batters he faced. A gritty Abraham Toro at-bat, which resulted in a single, eventually gave way to a three-run Wilyer Abreu home run. From thereon, the game was woefully out of reach.</p><p>Bassitt allowed eight runs on eight hits and walked four batters in just two innings of work. The bullpen struggled as well, resulting in an eye-popping amount of Red Sox runs. This outcome is ghastly even in a vacuum, but it is especially mind-boggling when considering how feeble Boston’s lineup has been lately. The team had scored only four runs in the last 28 innings, with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-trevor-story-shuts-down-notion-missing-rafael-devers-bat">Rafael Devers’ departure</a> looming uncomfortably large.</p><p>The Jays’ bats were unable to generate any momentum in the batter’s box, mustering just six hits off Lucas Giolito and none off the returning Chris Murphy (first appearance since September of 2023). They must quickly shake off this rough showing in Fenway and come back strong for the rubber match.</p><h2><b>A big series is on the horizon for the Blue Jays</b></h2><p>Toronto (44-38) is still a few games clear of the danger zone in the AL Wild Card race, currently occupying the second slot, and only three games behind the AL-East leading New York Yankees. This squad has accomplished all that despite battling considerable injury troubles, and thus deserves ample praise.</p><p>But the Blue Jays cannot relent now. They are entering a pivotal stretch on their schedule, with a four-game series against the Yankees beginning next week. True contenders capitalize on these opportunities, and if Toronto is going to reach that level, it must weather this potential storm. While there is no need to worry yet, Sunday’s face-off with the Red Sox (41-43) feels more important than the standings may suggest. It only takes one bad weekend for this enduring ballclub to forfeit the momentum it built after grabbing two out of three games against the Cleveland Guardians. Though, staying steady is a burdensome task when valuable members of the roster are on the injured list.</p><p>Jays manager John Schneider provided the latest round of updates, with most of them being fairly positive. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-john-schneider-provides-vladimir-guerrero-jr-update-injury-scare">Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is considered day to day</a> with a forearm contusion <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-vladimir-guerrero-jr-suffers-injury-scare-after-hbp">following the events of a lively Thursday afternoon meeting</a> with the Guards, a seemingly lucky break for a lineup that already lacks power. Additionally, the skipper had some news to share regarding players who are currently on the IL.</p><h2><b>Are Blue Jays close to becoming whole?</b></h2><p>Veteran outfielder Anthony Santander is <a href="https://x.com/KeeganMatheson/status/1938707088126910472" rel="noopener">still not swinging a bat</a>, per MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson, eliciting further concern about his left shoulder inflammation. The 2024 All-Star and Silver Slugger had played 152-plus games in each of the least three years with the Baltimore Orioles, but in the first season of a five-year, $92.5 million contract, he has been unable to produce and get healthy. That is a brutal combination for a franchise that desperately searched for an impactful free agent last winter.</p><p>It is not all bad, however. Gold Glove outfielder Daulton Varsho “is running a little bit more” and is expected to round the bases in the near future, per Matheson. Even more encouraging is the latest Yimi Garcia update. The right-handed relief pitcher, who has missed more than a month with shoulder impingement, <a href="https://x.com/ArdenZwelling/status/1938707229663707594" rel="noopener">logged a rehab outing</a> with the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays on Thursday.</p><p>Garcia struck out the side and consistently hit 95 MPH on his fastball, via Sportsnet’s Arden Zwelling. He is set to pitch for Triple-A Buffalo on Sunday, making an MLB return likely imminent. Toronto is currently in a playoff slot despite these aforementioned players all missing an extended period of time. However, the club will seemingly be without Marcelo Mayer, as the franchise made a roster move leading up to Game 1 of the series.</p><p>Reports indicate that the Red Sox have placed Mayer <a href="https://x.com/IanMBrowne/status/1938671057277460709" rel="noopener">on the Bereavement List</a>, according to Ian Browne of MLB.com. Players are placed on the Bereavement List when they must temporarily leave the team to attend to the death or serious illness of a family member.</p><p>“The Red Sox today placed INF Marcelo Mayer on the Bereavement List. To fill his spot, Boston recalled INF/OF Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester.”</p><p>It’s not an ideal situation for the 22-year-old infielder, as attending the death of a loved one is never easy. Marcelo Mayer will be on the Bereavement List for three to seven days. So, there’s a chance he misses the Red Sox’s games after the Blue Jays series.</p><p>Throughout this season, Mayer has served as a nice, versatile player for Boston. The club has had him play in multiple positions in the infield, as injuries and the Rafael Devers trade have forced the Red Sox to get creative with the lineup. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-marcelo-mayer-gets-his-flowers-from-alex-cora-after-mlb-call-up">Marcelo Mayer has been starting at third base</a> for several games with Alex Bregman still on the injured list.</p><p>So far to being his career, Mayer has only had 77 at-bats. He’s still figuring things out as a rookie and doing his best to help Boston compete this season. So far through his rookie campaign, Marcelo Mayer owns a .208 batting average and .262 OBP while recording 16 hits, four home runs, and seven RBIs.</p><p>The Red Sox are expected to start Nick Sogard at third base on Friday against the Blue Jays. He is batting ninth in the order. In March, the 40-year-old <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-max-scherzer-exits-toronto-debut-with-injury" rel="noopener">sustained a right thumb injury</a> during his season debut against the Baltimore Orioles. </p><p>Ever since he underwent<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-flurry-injury-updates-max-scherzer-others" rel="noopener"> a grueling rehab process</a> with ups and downs, on Wednesday, Scherzer made his return against the Cleveland Guardians. </p><p>He threw for five innings and gave up six hits, three earned runs, and three walks. In addition, Scherzer had four strikeouts to his name. Even though the Blue Jays lost 5-4, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-max-scherzer-injury-return-loss-guardians" rel="noopener">Scherzer’s return meant a ton to the team</a>. </p><p>On Thursday, Blue Jays manager John Schneider <a href="https://x.com/ArdenZwelling/status/1938263974899847429" rel="noopener">officially announced</a> an update on Scherzer’s progress, per Arden Zwelling of SportsNet. </p><p>“He feels better today than he did the day after his triple-A rehab start,” Schneider said. On June 13, Scherzer made a rehab start for Blue Jay’s Triple-A affiliate Buffalo Bisons. </p><p>He threw for 4 1/3 innings, gave up two runs, and had four strikeouts. Five days later, Scherzer had his second rehab stint, where he had eight strikeouts in 4 1/3 scoreless innings. </p><p>Before his return, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-part-with-pitcher-amid-max-scherzer-return" rel="noopener">Blue Jays parted ways with reliever Erik Swanson</a>. His return offers hope based on one decent start but also a strong sense of caution. </p><h2><b>Max Scherzer and his battle with injuries</b></h2><p>Recently, Scherzer has had a difficult time with injuries. In 2021, he was pitching for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was scratched from the start in the NLDS due to arm soreness. </p><p>During the 2023 season, Scherzer, then with the Texas Rangers, experienced shoulder pain and was sidelined for six weeks. </p><p>In December 2023, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/texas-rangers/rangers-news-max-scherzer-2024-surgery" rel="noopener">Scherzer underwent surgery to repair a herniated disc</a>. The following year, he battled a strain in his hamstring. </p><p>Earlier this year, Scherzer joined the Blue Jays. His thumb had become an issue before his injury in late March. Despite <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-vladimir-guerrero-jr-suffers-injury-scare-after-hbp">Vladimir Guerrero Jr. exiting the game with injury</a>, the Blue Jays defeated the Cleveland Guardians 6-0. Even though the team is 5-5 across their last ten games, the future is bright for Toronto.</p><p>Manager John Schneider welcomed back Max Scherzer from the injured list this week. With the veterans return to the rotation, all of the Blue Jays’ starters are healthy with the exception of Bowden Francis. After <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-vladimir-guerrero-jr-500-million-contract-extension-325-million-shocker">giving Guerrero Jr. the extension he desired earlier this season</a>, the pressure is on Toronto to contend. So far, they have done a good job staying attached in their division.</p><p>Boone and general Ross Atkins need to make the most of this year’s trade deadline. With Bo Bichette likely going into free agency without an extension offer from the Blue Jays, it is now or never with the current core. Guerrero Jr. will lead the team for years to come, but his supporting class could be full of new faces soon.</p><p>Toronto has the talent necessary to make a deep run in the AL playoffs. However, operating under the radar at the trade deadline could help them smooth out some of their rough edges.</p><p>Here are three trades that the Blue Hays could make to catch the league off guard before the deadline.</p><h2>Athletics Starting Pitcher Jeffrey Springs</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Athletics-starting-pitcher-Jeffrey-Springs.jpg"><figcaption>Dennis Lee-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Blue Jays receive: SP Jeffrey Springs</p><p>Athletics receive: SP Juaron Watts-Brown</p><p>Despite a decent start to the season, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/athletics/1-player-athletics-must-trade-before-2025-deadline">Jeffrey Springs should be on the Athletics’ trade block this summer</a>. He has not necessarily underperformed expectations, but the Athletics definitely hoped for more when they brought him in. At this point in the season, the Athletics need a miraculous turnaround in order to find their way back into the playoff picture.</p><p>Springs is an intriguing option for contenders around the league. The 32-year-old has eight years of Major League Baseball experience, but he has never been to the postseason. At his best, he is a third or fourth starter on a great team, providing his manager with a consistent innings eater who can relieve pressure on the rest of the rotation.</p><p>Any team that trades for Springs could have him for the rest of this season <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/player/_/id/27819/jeffrey-springs" rel="noopener">plus two more</a>. The club option at the end of his contract is an attractive detail, especially for teams that could find themselves with little financial flexibility in a few seasons. Springs is a gamble thanks to his lack of playoff experience, but he could be the final piece of the Blue Jay’s pitching puzzle.</p><h2>Washington Nationals Third Baseman Amed Rosario</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Washington-Nationals-third-baseman-Amed-Rosario.jpg"><figcaption>Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Blue Jays receive: 3B Amed Rosario</p><p>Nationals receive: 3B Sean Keys</p><p>Washington’s team is being built around young stars like CJ Abrams and James Woods. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/washington-nationals/nationals-news-washington-scoops-veteran-infielder-2-million-contract-free-agency">The Nationals picked up Amed Rosario on a one-year, $2 million deal</a> to play behind Luis Garcia Jr. in the infield. However, the nine-year pro has done more than enough to increase his value in 2025.</p><p>Even in a smaller role, Rosario’s batting average sits at .277 with an OPS of .752. The 29-year-old proved that he is still capable of helping his team at the plate, even if his fielding is below average. Even though he has struggled at third base with four errors so far this season, Rosario’s defensive versatility brings value to whatever team he is on.</p><p>He would not replace Guerrero Jr. at first base if he joined Toronto. However, Rosario gives Schneider another player to place at second base when he needs an offensive boost. Andres Gimenez is still good in the field, but his struggles at the plate have not justified <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-finalizing-andres-gimenez-trade-with-guardians">the deal the Blue Jays made for him</a>. Getting Rosario would ease that pain without breaking their wallet.</p><h2>Chicago White Sox Outfielder Andrew Benintendi</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Chicago-White-Sox-outfielder-Andrew-Benintendi.jpg"><figcaption>Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Blue Jays receive: OF Andrew Benintendi</p><p>White Sox receive: OF Victor Arias</p><p>Toronto entered the 2025 season with their outfield set in stone. However, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-daulton-varsho-leaves-game-with-concerning-injury">Daulton Varsho’s injuries have hurt the Blue Jays</a>. The emergence of Addison Barger has helped Toronto, but they are still in desperate need of depth in the outfield. Enter Andrew Benintendi, a veteran who has become a player that contenders have added to spell injured outfielders throughout his career.</p><p>Benintendi is not the biggest name that could be moved away from Chicago in July. However, his price tag is significantly smaller than Luis Robert Jr.’s. Schneider and the Blue Jays do not need a difference-maker at the deadline, only players who can step in and produce while the roster gets health in the second half of the season.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/chicago-white-sox/1-player-chicago-white-sox-must-trade-before-2025-deadline">Benintendi is near the top of the list of names likely to be traded by the White Sox</a>. If they want to hold on to Robert Jr., teams will shift their focus over to the 30-year-old. The former Yankee still hits well enough to hold his own in a playoff lineup, even if his fielding isn’t what it used to be. He is the star of Canada’s only team. On Thursday, in the early contest against the Cleveland Guardians, Guerrero Jr. was <a href="https://x.com/brwalkoff/status/1938310984982004195?s=46" rel="noopener">hit by a pitch in the right forearm</a> that led to him being removed from the game.</p><p>Davis Schneider replaced Vlad, and the Blue Jays shifted the infield around. Schneider moved to second, Ernie Clement moved to first, and then Andres Gimenez slid over to shortstop. Toronto is currently winning 6-0 in the 9th inning and are close to winning the series.</p><p>In the third inning, right fielder Nathan Lukes singled to right field to score both Tyler Heineman and Jonatan Clase for the first runs of the game. Then, Miles Straw scored on a throwing error from Kyle Manzardo. Kevin Guasman went 8.0 innings, allowing just two hits and zero runs. He walked only one hitter and struck out six on 104 pitches. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-john-schneider-explains-kevin-gausmans-recent-slump">Gausman lowered his ERA</a> to 4.21 on the season.</p><p>The Blue Jays followed up with three more runs in the 9th to extend the lead to 6-0. Alejandro Kirk hit a three-run single to left field that scored Addison Barger and Clement, and then Clase scored on a throwing error from Steven Kwan.</p><p>The good news for Guerrero Jr. is that his X-Rays are negative. The same thing happened to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-manny-machado-sends-warning-after-fernando-tatis-jr-injury">Fernando Tatis Jr.</a> a few days ago, and he was in the lineup the next day. Guerrero Jr. should not miss much time, if any at all. This team could not afford to lose him. Stay tuned as manager John Schneider or the team should provide an update after the game against the Guardians.</p><p>At 42-37, close to 43 wins, they are third in the AL East standings by 3.5 games. The New York Yankees’ lead is very thin, and Toronto is 2.5 games back of the Tampa Bay Rays. While the result didn’t go the Toronto’s way, the performance itself carried major significance.</p><p>Scherzer allowed three earned runs on six hits and three walks across 83 pitches (55 strikes). He struck out four and showed signs of rust, but more importantly, he came out healthy — something Toronto’s rotation has desperately needed. The deal, firs t reported by MLB.com’s Christina De Nicola, is Toronto’s <a href="https://x.com/CDeNicola13/status/1937715119544553516" rel="noopener">first transaction</a> ahead of the MLB trade deadline.</p><p>Robinson Pina, 26, was recently designated for assignment by the Marlins after making his MLB debut on June 20, where he pitched one inning and surrendered a solo home run to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/atlanta-braves/braves-news-austin-riley-drops-embarrassing-truth-bomb-struggles">Atlanta Braves’ Austin Riley</a>. That outing was his lone appearance in the majors.</p><p>In Triple-A Jacksonville during the 2025 season, Pina has posted a 4–3 record with a 3.47 ERA and a 3.73 FIP across 13 appearances (11 starts), totaling 57.0 innings. He has recorded 54 strikeouts and issued just 14 walks, equating to a strikeout rate of 22.2% and a walk rate of 6.2%. His WHIP stands at 1.193.</p><p>Pina’s underlying metrics further show his effectiveness. His 31.95% chase rate ranks in the 83rd percentile of Triple-A pitchers, while his whiff rate sits at 29.3% with a swinging strike rate of 13.61%. He employs a five-pitch arsenal: a four-seam fastball and sinker (both around 93 mph), a low-80s slider (used 30.6% of the time), along with a splitter and cutter.</p><p>Originally signed by the Los Angeles Angels in 2017, Pina has also spent time in the Philadelphia Phillies’ system, where he logged a 4.18 ERA across 129.1 innings in 2024, starting all 25 of his appearances. Pina is expected to join Triple-A Buffalo as a depth option. His three remaining minor league options add valuable roster flexibility for the Blue Jays.</p><p>Headed to Miami is 24-year-old Colby Martin, a late-blooming pitching prospect drafted in the 16th round of the 2024 MLB Draft by Toronto out of Southeastern University. Originally an infielder, Martin converted to pitching full-time in 2024 after transferring from a Division III program to an NAIA school.</p><p>In 2025, Martin has shown promise as a relief pitcher. At Single-A Dunedin, he posted a 1.61 ERA and 2.90 FIP over 22.1 innings, notching a 33.3% strikeout rate and a 16.1% walk rate. He allowed just six hits and struck out 30 batters in those 21 appearances. Martin was recently promoted to High-A Vancouver, where he made a single appearance before the trade.</p><p>Martin features a high-velocity four-seam fastball that averages 97 mph and has touched 102 mph in the past. His 41% whiff rate ranks in the 91st percentile among Single-A pitchers. However, command remains a concern, as evidenced by his elevated walk rate.</p><p>Despite a brief professional track record, just over 32 innings pitched, Martin represents a developmental project with significant upside, making him a worthwhile acquisition for the rebuilding Marlins.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

But after winning 12 of 14 games, Toronto has cooled off, going 3-6 since. However, the Blue Jays could be positioned to make another run with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-rumors-max-scherzer-expected-injury-return-date">Max Scherzer ready to rejoin the rotation</a>.</p><p>With Scherzer set to return, the Blue Jays are <a href="https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2025/06/blue-jays-release-erik-swanson.html?utm_source=twitter" rel="noopener">moving on</a> from relief pitcher Erik Swanson. The team designated Swanson for assignment last week and, after going unclaimed on waivers, Toronto released him Monday, per MLB Trade Rumors.</p><p>The seventh-year veteran struggled working out of the Blue Jays’ bullpen this season. He posted a 15.19 ERA, 2.438 WHIP and 5.1 K/9 in 5 1/3 innings, earning him an ugly ERA+ of 29.</p><h2><b>Blue Jays will welcome Max Scherzer back to the rotation</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Max-Scherzer-1.jpg"><figcaption>Jonathan Dyer-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Swanson began his career with the Seattle Mariners in 2019. He had his best season as a pro with Seattle in 2022, notching a 1.69 ERA, 0.913 WHIP, 11.7 K/9 and 222 ERA+ in 53 2/3 innings for the Mariners. Swanson then joined the Blue Jays as part of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/grading-the-mariners-blue-jays-teoscar-hernandez-trade">trade that sent Teoscar Hernandez to Seattle</a> in 2023.</p><p>Swanson performed well in his debut season with Toronto, becoming a reliable reliever with a 2.97 ERA and 1.095 WHIP in 69 appearances. He even earned four saves for the Blue Jays that year.</p><p>However, cracks began to form as Swanson put together a shaky 2024 campaign. He then began 2025 on the 60-day IL with an injury to his throwing arm. The 31-year-old righty made his season debut June 1. But after allowing seven runs in 1 2/3 innings over his last two appearances, the Blue Jays had seen enough and DFA-ed the pitcher.</p><p>Like Swanson, Scherzer has also missed significant time this season with an injury. The 18th-year veteran made one start for Toronto after signing a $15.5 million contract in the offseason. Unfortunately, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-max-scherzer-exits-toronto-debut-with-injury">Scherzer was injured in his Blue Jays debut</a> and landed on the 60-day IL with inflammation in his right thumb.</p><p>The three-time Cy Young Award winner <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-flurry-injury-updates-max-scherzer-others">began a rehab assignment</a> in mid-June.
