Rather than continuing to search for opportunities as a hitter, Gallo is now attempting an unconventional comeback as a pitcher.</p><p>It might sound wild at first, but there’s real precedent for the shift—and Gallo might just have the tools for it.</p><p>He was a dominant high school pitcher at Bishop Gorman (Nev.), where he threw a no-hitter his senior year and was named Nevada Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year. At that time, Perfect Game clocked his fastball at 94 mph and praised his deceptive changeup. Gallo was a quality outfielder, and also drew a lot of walks to post high on-base percentages when he was at his best. Now, he seemingly is going to take his shot at <a href="https://x.com/JoeyGallo24/status/1901325978812698935" rel="noopener">being a pitcher</a>.</p><p>“Just to be clear, I will be pitching,” Gallo said.</p><p>Gallo would not be the first player to make this move, if he is serious and going through with it. Some position players have tried and failed in the minor leagues, while others have at least made it to the majors. It will be interesting to see if Gallo is picked up by a team to try to help him on his journey to making it back to the major leagues as a pitcher.</p><p>Looking back on Gallo’s career in the majors, he had a successful run, mostly taking place with the Rangers. He made his MLB debut in 2015, and eventually made the All-Star game in 2019. He was a productive player with the Rangers from 2017 through the 2021 trade deadline, when he was sent to the New York Yankees. That did not go well, as he struggled in New York until he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2022, where the struggles continued.</p><p>Gallo somewhat rebounded in 2023 with the Minnesota Twins, but had a poor season with the Washington Nationals in 2024. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/chicago-white-sox/white-sox-news-joey-gallo-tries-revive-career-signs-contract">White Sox gave Gallo</a>, among <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/chicago-white-sox/white-sox-news-andrew-benintendi-spring-training-injury-update">other veterans</a>, a shot in spring training. While Gallo and the current White Sox manager played together, it always caught the former All-Star’s eye. Following putting the ink to paper for a chance to make the roster, Gallo <a href="https://chicago.suntimes.com/white-sox/2025/02/19/as-camp-gets-rolling-a-more-confident-chris-getz-convinced-he-made-right-hire-in-will-venable" rel="noopener">showed love to the current manager</a>.</p><p>“When I played with him, I thought, ‘He’s going to manage one day,’” Gallo said via Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times.</p><p>“There’s guys you’re around in the clubhouse that have manager-type vibes and are very respected throughout all of baseball, respected throughout the whole clubhouse. He was one of those guys always, was always helping younger guys. And you could tell he had a natural leadership type of personality. It was easy to see that he would be a manager one day.”</p><p>After the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/chicago-white-sox/white-sox-news-brutally-honest-post-117th-loss-going-viral">White Sox had the worst season in franchise history</a>, Venable knew what he signed up for. However, as a player’s manager, he understands what is needed. As Gallo mentioned, he commands respect not only through words but also through actions.</p><h2><b>Joey Gallo’s approval of Will Venable is good for the White Sox</b></h2><p>Gallo has been a veteran in the league for quite some time. As mentioned before, he’s an All-Star and a Gold Glove winner. His numbers might not be the best, but he commands respect. Even with the White Sox signing him to a Minor League deal, it shows that he’s willing to put in the work.</p><p>Plus, Gallo has been around a plethora of quality managers in his career. From Dave Roberts to Aaron Boone, he’s been around managers who were once players. They understand the game from a player perspective, as well as a managerial one. The former Texas Ranger feels that Venable can insert himself into the conversation.</p><p>Still, expectations around the franchise are low. <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/CHW/2024.shtml" rel="noopener">Winning 41 games is brutal</a>, for the players, fans, and the organization as a whole. The former Los Angeles Dodgers play will have his work cut out for him. Regardless of whether Gallo makes the main roster or not, his respect for Venable can be felt throughout the organization.</p><p>Luckily, the new manager will have all of Spring Training to dictate how his team will operate for the regular season. Achieving respect of your players is a great first step. As the White Sox attempt to improve after setting the record for the most losses in modern baseball history, the team <a href="https://x.com/whitesox/status/1890206713372111204" rel="noopener">reached an agreement</a> with former Texas Rangers’ slugger Joey Gallo</p><p>Chicago signed Gallo to a minor-league contract on Wednesday, according to the White Sox’s official account on X. The deal includes an opportunity for the 10-year veteran to attend spring training as a non-roster invitee.</p><p>Last offseason Gallo signed a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nationals-news-washington-joey-gallo-agree-1-year-deal-5-million">one-year, $5 million contract</a> with the Washington Nationals. The previous season he hit .177/.301/.440 with 21 home runs, 40 RBI and 39 runs scored in 111 games as a member of the Minnesota Twins. In Washington, Gallo’s offensive production continued to deteriorate as he delivered a .161/.277/.336 slash line along with just 10 homers, 27 RBI and 24 runs scored in 76 games.</p><p>Gallo has always had a high strikeout rate. But he hasn’t been able to compensate by drawing walks and his OBP has suffered significantly as a result. He’s finished with a sub .300 on-base percentage in two of the last three seasons.</p><h2><b>Can Joey Gallo turn things around with the White Sox?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Joey-Gallo.jpg"><figcaption>Matt Marton-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Still, Gallo has shown an ability to hit for power in his career, swatting 40 home runs in back-to-back seasons with the Rangers. The White Sox hope he’ll be a cost-effective power bat for their lineup, assuming he makes the roster in 2025.</p><p>The White Sox lost a record 121 games in 2024. The team finished 51.5 games behind the first-place Cleveland Guardians in the American League Central. So, expectations entering the upcoming season are not particularly high. It could be the perfect environment for a career revival from Gallo.</p><p>Chicago fired manager Pedro Grifol during the team’s nightmare season, replacing him with former player Grady Sizemore. However, the White Sox opted to enter 2025 with a clean slate, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/white-sox-news-find-new-manager-after-historically-brutal-season">hiring Will Venable as the team’s new manager</a>.</p><p>After finishing with a paltry 41 wins last year, the White Sox’s <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/chicago-white-sox-2025-over-under-win-total-prediction-odds-pick">over/under win total</a> is set at 52.5 for the 2025 season. Chicago is not expected to compete in a division with four teams that finished above .500 in 2024. However, fans hope the team can claw its way back to respectability.</p><p>Gallow is also looking to get back on track as the former All-Star has struggled mightily since being traded to the New York Yankees during the 2021 season. She won the 2015 Youngarts and was a Presidential Scholar in the Arts finalist. Hayden won several national titles in competitive dance and began assisting choreographers at 13. Hayden is also an entrepreneur, starting a dancewear label, HHxx, when she was 18. She moved to New York City to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance, eventually moving to Las Vegas to join Cirque De Soleil.
