At 45-39, they’re keeping pace with juggernauts like the Dodgers and Padres, backed by one of baseball’s top rotations, a historically dominant bullpen, and a front office finally behaving like a contender again—<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/giants-rumors-ideal-next-trade-upgrade-rafael-devers">see: the Rafael Devers blockbuster.</a></p><p>Now, the Giants must keep the pressure on. Standing pat isn’t an option, and sentimentality can’t cloud decision-making. With the emergence of Heliot Ramos as an All-Star, Jung Hoo Lee finding his stride, and promising young talents like Luis Matos, Marco Luciano, and (not young) Dom Smith knocking on the door, the writing may be on the wall.</p><p>Meanwhile, other teams—like the Mets—have legitimate holes in the outfield and could benefit from a player like Yaz. His ability to play all three outfield positions and handle tough at-bats gives him value in a contender’s platoon or as a fourth outfielder with regular reps. For New York, who needs stability in left field and a backup plan for Juan Soto and Brandon Nimmo, Yastrzemski makes sense. For the Giants, flipping him now brings back a prospect or bullpen piece and clears payroll flexibility for another move—potentially a power bat or veteran starter.</p><h2><b>Buster Posey isn’t messing around, and wants a winning product on the field</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Buster-Posey.jpg"></figure><p>Letting go of a veteran like Yaz isn’t easy, especially given his leadership and familiarity in the clubhouse. On Saturday, he played a great game.</p><p>Anthony entered the game with a batting average of .128. After having so much excitement around him when the Red Sox called him up, Boston’s top prospect fell short of expectations. He took advantage of Toronto’s shaky pitching on Saturday though, going 3-for-6 and scoring two runs in the game.</p><p>While talking with reporters after the game, Giolito gave the 21-year-old props for his performance, according to Mass Live’s Chris Costello. In his opinion, Anthony <a href="https://x.com/ChrisCotillo/status/1939120327650316473" rel="noopener">has worked hard</a> to overcome a slow start to his Major League Baseball career.</p><p>“He’s probably one of the most mature 21-year-old pro baseball players I’ve ever played with,” Giolito said. “Really good head on his shoulders, very even-keeled. I know up to this point he hasn’t been getting those counting stat results that he’s wanted. But he has been showing a ton of promise, really good at-bats. We’ll reassess the situation Week 6 and then from there, we’ll probably have a better idea when he’s going to come back,” Cora said, per Smith.</p><p>While Bregman’s return seems to be at least a week away at this point, it is still a very good sign that he is able to get back on the field and participate in baseball activities. A quad injury affects all parts of his game on the diamond, so it’s understandable that there would be some ramp-up time for him.</p><p>“I don’t think he’s pushing faster than what he can,” Cora added. “I think he’s pushing because he feels good. However, the club will seemingly be without Marcelo Mayer, as the franchise made a roster move leading up to Game 1 of the series.</p><p>Reports indicate that the Red Sox have placed Mayer <a href="https://x.com/IanMBrowne/status/1938671057277460709" rel="noopener">on the Bereavement List</a>, according to Ian Browne of MLB.com. Players are placed on the Bereavement List when they must temporarily leave the team to attend to the death or serious illness of a family member.</p><p>“The Red Sox today placed INF Marcelo Mayer on the Bereavement List. To fill his spot, Boston recalled INF/OF Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester.”</p><p>It’s not an ideal situation for the 22-year-old infielder, as attending the death of a loved one is never easy. Marcelo Mayer will be on the Bereavement List for three to seven days. So, there’s a chance he misses the Red Sox’s games after the Blue Jays series.</p><p>Throughout this season, Mayer has served as a nice, versatile player for Boston. The club has had him play in multiple positions in the infield, as injuries and the Rafael Devers trade have forced the Red Sox to get creative with the lineup. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-marcelo-mayer-gets-his-flowers-from-alex-cora-after-mlb-call-up">Marcelo Mayer has been starting at third base</a> for several games with Alex Bregman still on the injured list.</p><p>So far to being his career, Mayer has only had 77 at-bats. He’s still figuring things out as a rookie and doing his best to help Boston compete this season. So far through his rookie campaign, Marcelo Mayer owns a .208 batting average and .262 OBP while recording 16 hits, four home runs, and seven RBIs.</p><p>The Red Sox are expected to start Nick Sogard at third base on Friday against the Blue Jays. He is batting ninth in the order. He threw 76 pitches (51 strikes),” adding that, “He threw 45 four-seam fastballs, averaging 94.7 mph and topping out at 96.3 mph. In 2023, Rafaela played in 28 games, batting .241 with two home runs and 5 RBIs. </p><p>The following year, he played in 152 games and batted .246 with 15 home runs and 75 RBIs. The team they traded the third baseman/designated hitter to the San Francisco Giants. Clearly, the two are comfortable doing business together. ESPN<a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45568636/ranking-mlb-trade-deadline-candidates-alex-bregman-jarren-duran"> lists</a> the two <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/2025-mlb-trade-deadline-ranking-10-best-players-potentially-available">best players on the trading block</a> as Alex Bregman and Jarren Duran, both of whom play for the Red Sox. While it is far from a guarantee that either of them gets traded, the Giants actually would make sense to work with again in a trade involving Duran.</p><h2><b>Giants’ trade proposal for Jarren Duran</b></h2><p><b>Red Sox receive:</b> Carson Whisenhunt (Giants No. 2), Rayner Arias (Giants No. 7), Carson Ragsdale (Giants No. 21)</p><p><b>Giants receive:</b> Jarren Duran</p><p>Their trade for Devers proves that the Giants are all in. They play in a stacked National League West that includes the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres, both of which are loaded with star talent. The Giants shouldn’t stop making moves, even after adding their Dominican slugger.</p><p>The Giants are currently 44-35. They are only narrowly ahead of San Diego in the standings, and Los Angeles is quickly pulling away. While the team’s outfield of Heliot Ramos, Jung Hoo Lee, and Mike Yastrzemski has been solid, it hasn’t been great, so they could use an upgrade. Duran broke onto the scene as one of the best outfielders in baseball last season.</p><p>Duran played elite defensive en route to his first All-Star appearance last year. He also killed it with the bat, as he hit 21 home runs while maintaining a .285 batting average. His 48 doubles and 14 triples led the NL, too. His numbers are slightly down this year, but he has still already hit eight triples. Duran is a speed threat who can hit for both power and contact. He’d give the Giants a four-headed outfield monster and better their chances of winning this year’s World Series. Plus, he obviously has familiarity with the recently traded for Devers.</p><p>It didn’t take a huge prospect haul to acquire Devers due to his shaky relationship with the Red Sox. Even though Devers is the superior player to Duran, the Giants can afford to give up a few more high-quality minor leaguers from their <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/top-10-mlb-farm-systems-ahead-of-2025-season">farm system</a> this go around if they were to deal with Boston again.</p><h2><b>Is Jarren Duran or Alex Bregman more likely to be moved?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Red-Sox-outfielder-Jarren-Duran-16-reacts-after-striking-out.jpg"><figcaption>© Brian Fluharty-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Neither Bregman nor Duran is all that likely to be moved. ESPN <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45568636/ranking-mlb-trade-deadline-candidates-alex-bregman-jarren-duran" rel="noopener">gives</a> it just a 10% chance that the third baseman will be traded this year, whereas the outfielder has only a 25% chance of being moved. Bregman is unlikely to be traded because he signed a three-year, $120 million deal this past offseason. Not only does that contract carry a high average annual value, but Bregman could opt out of the deal at season’s end, and the idea of him being a rental could scare teams off.</p><p>Duran, meanwhile, isn’t headed to unrestricted free agency until 2029. The Red Sox may want to move him while he still has tons of value, as his breakout campaign last season could be looked at as a fluke if he doesn’t pick it up soon. Even so, the Red Sox have no need to blow things up, so they’d be better off holding onto Duran.</p><p>The team is just outside of the playoff picture, and a few buyers’ moves could get them firmly in the hunt for a wild-card spot. Devers was traded not because Boston is looking to rebuild, but because his relationship with the Red Sox was fractured after they forced him to change positions. Don’t expect either Bregman or Duran to be dealt before the trade deadline.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The team was hopeful the two-time All-Star would be able to return to the lineup in early July after landing on the 10-day IL with a quad strain on May 23. But despite Boston’s optimistic prognosis, it appears Bregman <a href="https://x.com/timbhealey/status/1937940356353671220" rel="noopener">won’t be ready</a> to rejoin the team that soon.</p><p>Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters that it “looks like” Bregman will be sidelined until after the All-Star Game, per The Boston Globe’s Tim Healey. Teams break for the Midsummer Classic July 13-17, making July 18 Bregman’s earliest return date if Cora’s latest assessment proves accurate.</p><h2><b>Alex Bregman’s return to the Red Sox gets delayed</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Alex-Bregman_3787e5.jpg"><figcaption>David Reginek-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>After spending the first nine seasons of his career with the Houston Astros, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-alex-bregman-lands-boston-3-year-120-million-contract">Bregman joined the Red Sox</a> on a three-year, $120 million contract in free agency in 2025. The Gold Glove winner was off to an excellent start in Boston, slashing .299/.385/.553 with 11 home runs, 35 RBI, 32 runs scored, a 159 OPS+ and 2.9 bWAR in 51 games.</p><p>However, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-alex-bregman-one-good-sign-leaving-orioles-clash-injury">Bregman was forced to leave a matchup</a> against the Baltimore Orioles after injuring his right quad while running the bases. The 10th-year veteran was initially optimistic about the ailment, hopeful he could avoid a trip to the injured list. Unfortunately, he was placed on the 10-day IL the next day.</p><p>Bregman has been very durable throughout his career, playing at least 145 games in six of seven full seasons – not counting his rookie year when he was called up in July, the COVID-shortened 2020 season and the current campaign. However, he did miss more than two months in 2021 with a left quad strain.</p><p>Despite his absence, the Red Sox got hot in June, going 10-2 over a 12 game stretch during which they won five of six games against the New York Yankees. Boston started the month 8.5 games behind New York in the AL East but the team was just four games out of first place after the two-week hot streak.</p><p>However, the streak abruptly ended when the Red Sox travelled to San Francisco just days after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-rafael-devers-blockbuster-red-sox-trade">trading disgruntled All-Star Rafael Devers</a> to the Giants. The franchise is at a bit of a crossroads right now, especially after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-rafael-devers-blockbuster-red-sox-trade">trading three-time All-Star Rafael Devers</a>. Boston is 40-41 and in fourth place in the American League East, which is a disappointment considering preseason expectations. Still, while that position is not ideal, the Red Sox are only 2.5 out of a wild-card spot.</p><p>The front office is, therefore, trying to weigh whether to be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline with its talented young core. Unfortunately, the organization picked up some tough news with the recent injury update on Kutter Crawford. NESN Red Sox sideline reporter Jahmai Webster <a href="https://x.com/WebsterOnTV/status/1937939274722324809" rel="noopener">broke down the health status</a> of the 29-year-old right-hander.</p><p>“Red Sox pitcher Kutter Crawford to have wrist surgery. Likely done for the year. He sustained the injury off the field. Alex Cora emphasized it wasn’t done in an irresponsible way. He did not want to go into great details but did mention it was an accident.”</p><p>Crawford has been dealing with this ailment for all of 2025, and it looks like he will have to wait till next season to retake the mound. The Red Sox’s starting pitching has lacked depth for most of the season, so not getting Crawford back is a major blow. Boston is currently giving up 4.56 runs per game, <a href="https://www.teamrankings.com/mlb/stat/opponent-runs-per-game" rel="noopener">ranking 22nd</a> in the league. Therefore, should the front office want to make this roster into a legitimate playoff contender, it will likely need to beef up the starting rotation and bullpen.</p><p>There are plenty of trade candidates on the Red Sox, even after dealing Devers. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-rumors-2-stars-espn-top-trade-candidates">Alex Bregman and Jarren Duran have been involved</a> in rumors for a while and could garner a lot of pieces in return. The franchise is in the middle of a youth movement, and players like Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell, and Marcelo Mayer are all going through the expected growing pains right now.</p><p>Overall, it’s rare for a franchise like the Red Sox to preach patience to their fans. Boston is used to being in championship-or-bust mode, but the front office is trying to gradually build this roster into a contender.
