Jordan Walker is one of the future faces of the team, and Oliver Marmol wants his outfielder to focus on both sides of the ball. Specifically he wants Walker, Victor Scott II and Lars Nootbaar to be more aggressive in the field.</p><p>In his first two years in the majors, Walker focused on not making mistakes on defense. Unfortunately, that prevented him from using his athleticism and his 6-foot-6 frame to make plays in the outfield. Now, Walker’s <a href="https://x.com/dgoold/status/1917676981979615586" rel="noopener">new defensive mindset</a> sees him getting more chances to come up clutch in the field.</p><p>“Playing back, I missed out on opportunities to make plays, missed out on opportunities to get outs, missed out on opportunities, you know, to save runs,” said Walker to St. Louis Dispatch writer Derrick Goold. “That’s really the main reason you’re in the field.”</p><p>Walker, along with Scott II, are learning from Nootbaar, one of the league’s better fielders. They are becoming more aggressive defensively, and it has paid dividends for the pitchers that rely on them. Sonny Gray and Matthew Liberatore sport ERA’s under 4.00 thanks to the defense behind them.</p><p>While Walker and Nootbaar are dedicated to being better in the field, they are still valuable batters. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/st-louis-cardinals/cardinals-news-nolan-arenado-reaction-walk-off-home-run-brewers">Nolan Arenado provides the Cardinals’ heroics</a>, but the St. Louis outfielders are key pieces to the lineup.</p><p>Walker’s team needs more balanced contributions from their roster in order to rebound into contention. The National League Central is one of the MLB’s more competitive divisions after a long period of the Cardinals dominating. The two teams are in the middle of a four-game series, and the Cardinals have won both so far. Mike Mikolas got the start on the mound for St. Louis, and he brought his A-game. Mikolas lasted 5.1 innings, and he gave up no runs while striking out four and walking none. The Cardinals went on to win 6-0.</p><p>Early season MLB games can be tough in the northern states as it still gets pretty cold in April. That wasn’t the case on Wednesday, and Miles Mikolas thinks that the <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/miles-mikolas-earns-first-win-of-2025-vs-reds" rel="noopener">warm weather helps</a> him.</p><p>“I’m happy with the way the season started, except for the Boston [outing],” Mikolas said, according to an article from MLB.com. “I’m happy with how my fastball command has been, and maybe it had a little more life to it with the warm weather hitting. Atlanta and today were the only games where I’ve had to work up a sweat, because it’s been so chilly early in the season. I think that’s big, and being from Florida, I favor the warm weather and humidity a little bit.”</p><p>Pitching in the cold can be difficult, but shortstop Masyn Winn thinks that pitchers have the advantage in the cold. He hit two home runs on Wedneday, and he certainly prefers going to the plate in the warmer weather.</p><p>“You know, early in the year, when it’s cold out, I think pitchers have the advantage, because it just sucks hitting when it’s cold,” Winn said. “But we’ve got to go out there and fight. But yeah, with warm weather, I feel like I thrive in that a lot more.”</p><p>Winn wasn’t the only one who went deep for the Cardinals in Game 1 of Wednesday’s double-header. In fact, every run scored by the Cardinals was courtesy of the long ball. It was a 1-0 game going into the ninth, but then Victor Scott II, Lars Nootbarr and Winn hit back-to-back-to-back shots to run away with it.</p><p>“Just knowing that the game could potentially be won and that was a big swing,” Victor Scott II said. “Then it was just exciting seeing all the guys come back in [to the dugout] after their home runs.”</p><p>The bats came alive in the ninth, but Mikolas’ outing on the mound is a big reason why the Cardinals had a lead before the barrage of homers. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol has liked what he has seen from Mikolas so far this year.</p><p>“That Boston outing kind of snowballed on him, but outside of that, he’s done a really nice job,” Oliver Marmol said. “He’s continuing to mix well with some early contact and some weak contact, but he’s been really good. He’s pitching to chase locations, and he got a couple of strikeouts today up top. So, it’s all looking positive for him.”</p><p>The Cardinals recently switched to a six-man pitching rotation, and that has been helpful for Mikolas in a lot of ways.</p><p>“Just being able to go with a little higher effort and not having to worry about throwing too many pitches and being tired or overworking myself when I’m searching for something has been big,” Mikolas said. “Sometimes, on the five-day [rotation], I have to cut that bullpen short. Having that extra day gives you extra time to fine-tune some things.”</p><p>St. Louis took Game 1 on Wednesday, but the two teams are currently battling it out again as the first game of this series ended up getting postponed. As a result, some teams are starting to target potential moves to improve their roster or get ready for the future. One player that teams are <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-rumors-two-suitors-emerge-cardinals-all-star-ryan-helsley">keeping an eye on is St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley</a>.</p><p>The trade deadline isn’t until the final day of July, but some teams are already targeting Helsley for a potential swap. The Philadelphia Phillies and the Arizona Diamondbacks are two <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2025/04/27/chandler-simpson-rays-speed/83305535007/" rel="noopener">teams that could be involved</a> in talks for the right-hander, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.</p><p>“The Philadelphia Phillies, among other teams, already are keeping a close eye on Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley, who will likely be dealt by the trade deadline. Yet, the Phillies are adamant they will not include top prospects Andrew Painter or Aidan Miller in any trade,” Nightengale wrote. “The Arizona Diamondbacks, with lefty reliever A.J. Puk sidelined for the foreseeable future, also have interest in Helsley.”</p><p>The Cardinals aren’t out of any race just yet, but they do sit in fourth place in the NL Central at 12-15. Still, they are just 4.5 games back of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/phillies-news-bryce-harper-drops-cubs-revelation-fans-screaming">division-leading Chicago Cubs</a> and the Central projects to be the worst division of the three in the National League. As a result, any Helsley deal is likely months away from going down.</p><p>The Phillies and Diamondbacks could both use some help in the bullpen as they try to keep pace with some of the best teams in baseball at the top of their respective divisions.</p><p>The Phillies are in second in the NL East after about a month of play, but the division-leading <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mets-news-pete-alonso-truth-bomb-explains-new-york-hot-start">New York Mets are the best team in baseball</a> with a stellar 19-8 record. Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks are in fourth in the NL West with a solid record of 14-13, but the Dodgers, Padres and Giants all have only 10 losses at the top of the division.</p><p>The addition of someone like Helsley, who has allowed just four earned runs and eight hits in 10 appearances with four saves, would go a long way toward helping either of those teams close the gap in the playoff race.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The star third baseman <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/st-louis-cardinals/cardinals-news-nolan-arenados-walk-off-home-run-fans-going-wild">hit a walk-off home run</a> to beat the Milwaukee Brewers. He and Willson Contreras are leading the team’s rebound, but Arenado couldn’t help but compare himself to where he was last season.</p><p>Arenado’s bat is leading the Cardinals’ offense so far this season. However, he was humble enough to say after the game that he <a href="https://x.com/corey_miller5/status/1916250932313981375" rel="noopener">didn’t think</a> that the 2024 version of him could have hit the walk-off homer, according to KSDK reporter Corey Miller.</p><p>“The moves I was making last year, absolutely not,” said Arenado about whether or not he could’ve hit the same pitch last season. “I was not in a good place last year. I don’t like thinking about it, but I don’t think I get to that last year.”</p><p>2024 was, to put things nicely, an uncharacteristically bad year for Arenado. His power was far less than his first two years under Marmol, and the team struggled to put runs on the board because of it. In 2025, though, the 34-year-old is having a bounce-back season, on pace to crush his numbers from 2024. This comes after plenty of trade rumors in the offseason, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/st-louis-cardinals/cardinals-news-nolan-arenado-explains-decision-veto-astros-trade">including a trade to the Houston Astros that Arenado vetoed</a>.</p><p>A big power season is just what the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-paul-goldschmidt-12-5-million-contract">Cardinals need after losing Paul Goldschmidt</a>. A new era is starting for St. Louis, and they need veterans like Arenado and Contreras to set the example. They might be near the bottom of the National League Central, but a solid winning streak helps them a lot.</p><p>Seeing Arenado rebound back to his All-Star self is a great sign for the St. Louis Cardinals moving forward. The team hopes to ride the momentum he gave them on Saturday into a season sweep of the Brewers. If they keep winning, they will prove to the league that they won’t go quietly. After the game, the third baseman <a href="https://x.com/FanDuelSN_MW/status/1916239619634466974" rel="noopener">shared his immediate thoughts</a> during an interview, via FanDuel Sports Network Midwest.</p><p>“He’s got a good heater, luckily I was able to beat him to the spot,” Arenado said of smashing the 0-1 pitch from Megill over the fence. “He’s not a very comfortable at-bat. You gotta be ready for the heater and I was able to work above it. It was a tight pitch… Thank God it went out.”</p><p>After getting some ice dumped on him in celebration, Arenado composed himself and revealed what the walk-off homer meant to him.</p><p>“It felt good,” he said. “I just want to help the team win. My bats today weren’t great, but like I said he’s a tough pitcher and I just try to be ready to hit. Thank God it worked out, man. I was praying before that at-bat, I ain’t gonna lie.”</p><p>There were no guarantees that Arenado would even be in St. Louis in 2025. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-rumors-red-sox-nearly-traded-nolan-arenado-alex-bregman-signing">Trade rumors swirled throughout the offseason</a>, linking the Cardinals star to multiple potential suitors. In the end, Arenado ended up remaining with the Cardinals, and St. Louis is certainly content with that at the moment.</p><p>The team is still under .500 overall. If they continue to struggle, Arenado could re-emerge as a trade candidate before the MLB trade deadline. Perhaps St. Louis will use Saturday’s win as a momentum boost, though. When Quinn isn't producing content for CP,  he's writing sports betting predictions for numerous sites across North America.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">MLB</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/cardinals-news-angry-fans-charge-st-louis-x-after-wild-ending-vs-braves">The St. Louis Cardinals have been struggling immensely on the mound</a>, with their bullpen in particular having major issues late in games.</p><p>Ahead of Friday’s matchup with the Milwaukee Brewers, the team <a href="https://x.com/katiejwoo/status/1915843770148438256" rel="noopener">has called up</a> reliever Riley O’Brien to hopefully give their pen a boost, as reported by Katie Woo.</p><p>O’Brien has pitched well in Triple-A so far this season, striking out 14 hitters in just seven innings of work while allowing only three earned runs. The Cardinals have a 4.36 ERA as a staff right now, which ranks 23rd in the Majors.</p><p>O’Brien hasn’t pitched many innings in the MLB, but the hope is he can bring his brilliance from Memphis to St. Louis. The Cardinals’ bullpen currently owns a 5.11 ERA, which is one of the worst marks in the entire big leagues. Needless to say, they need some serious help.</p><p>The worst part is that St. Louis has one of the best offenses around early on. It’s their pitching that continues to hurt them. The organization blew a lead to the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday after Ryan Fernandez allowed a three-run homer. JoJo Romero has also been poor out of the bullpen.</p><p>Regardless, Cardinals skipper Oli Marmol is<a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/cardinals-bullpen-struggles-in-loss-to-braves" rel="noopener"> staying patient</a>:</p><p>“We treat the bullpen arms different than the position players because when it doesn’t go [the reliever’s] way, the game usually flips, and it hurts,” Marmol said. “So, [the bullpen] is the hardest area to be patient in.</p><p>“If we’re going to be as reactive with these bullpen arms [with possible demotions], why not send some of these position players out?”</p><p>Marmol makes a good point. However, they can only be patient for so long. We’ll see if adding O’Brien to the mix will help turn things around for the Cardinals. They cannot keep wasting the impressive efforts of their lineup.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Lars Nootbaar has been the leadoff walk king this season for the Cardinals and set a record that hadn’t been touched in 50 years, according to reporter Derrick Goold.</p><p>“With his leadoff walk today, Lars Nootbaar has tied … wait for it … an MLB record previously set 50 years ago. Nootbaar has 8 leadoff walks in Cardinals‘ first 25 games to match Davy Lopes’ record for most leadoff BB in 1st month. Nootbaar has 6 more games to own record,” Goold wrote on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>Nootbaar has been hitting the ball well this season, and it’s caused him to make history. Just a couple of days ago, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/st-louis-cardinals/how-key-change-at-the-plate-triggered-cardinals-lars-nootbaars-decisive-homer-vs-astros">Nootbaar credited hitting coach</a> Brant Brown for <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/lars-nootbaar-hits-3-run-homer-in-cardinals-win-vs-astros" rel="noopener">his recent success</a> at the plate.</p><p>“[Brant Brown] has done a good job of honing in and nipping things in the bud right when he sees them and then it doesn’t go into a downward spiral,” Nootbaar said via MLB.com. “He has good plans and he comes in with a good approach.”</p><p>Manager Oliver Marmol also shared how he feels the team has been performing so far this season on offense.</p><p>“We’re playing good ball, the guys are going about it really well, I really like our process and that’s all that we can control,” Marmol said. “Obviously, you like taking four of six here at home, but I like how we’re doing it.</p><p>“We faced a good arm [on Tuesday in Hunter Brown] and we faced another one today and we just continue to grind out at bats and then we got the big hit. They were <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/editorials/2025-mlb-power-rankings-vol-6-behemoths-dominating-early-on">swept out of Queens and went tumbling down the NL Central standings</a>. The Cardinals are getting Masyn Winn back just in time, but are not sending down Thomas Saggese, who <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/masyn-winn-returns-from-injured-list-michael-siani-optioned" rel="noopener">was playing shortstop in his absence</a>. MLB.com’s John Denton explains why.</p><p>“The Cardinals decided to keep reserve shortstop Thomas Saggese on the active roster because of how he’s handled the bat with Winn out and his defensive versatility. Saggese, 23, has hit in all nine of his starts this season. On the season, he’s 14-for-35 with four doubles, one homer, and seven RBIs,” Denton wrote.</p><p>Winn started the season slowly, going hitless in his first five games and 20 at-bats. He got back to his normal level, going on a six-game hitting streak. Then, back spasms landed him on the injured list. Saggesse had just a .204 batting average in 18 games last season. His performance in 12 games this year has been spectacular.</p><p>The Cardinals sent down 26-year-old Michael Siani when Winn was brought up to the majors. Siani has a career .222 batting average and was a full-time player for the first time last year. He was a solid defensive centerfielder last year, not making a single error, but his defensive runs saved dipped into the negative this year.</p><p>Saggese has played second base and third base since joining the Cardinals. His versatility will help the team, especially after the trade deadline. They are expected to sell off pieces with a rebuild well underway. They let Paul Goldschmidt walk and were<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/st-louis-cardinals/mlb-rumors-cardinals-list-nolan-arenado-trade-options-1-thing"> trying to deal Nolan Arenado before the season</a>. If they do trade Arenado, Saggese could be the everyday third baseman down the stretch.
