So we probably did need to have a different type of conversation, and he got very private and withdrawn through that time. And I understand that. Three unidentified clubs are also said to be in the mix. “The Diamondbacks, who agreed Monday with right-hander Mike Soroka on a one-year, $7.5 million contract, are seeking young pitching as they await the returns of staff ace Corbin Burnes and relievers A.J. Puk and Justin Martinez from Tommy John surgeries,” Rosenthal wrote.</p><p>“Trading Marte allows the Diamondbacks to clear payroll and inject talent. While they need not rush or move Marte at all, a deadline of sorts is in effect. After the tenth day of the 2026 season, Marte will gain full no-trade protection as a player with 10 years of service and five consecutive with the same club.”</p><p>Across 126 last season, Marte hit 28 home runs, collected 72 RBIs, and earned an .893 OPS. According to Baseball Savant, the 32-year-old ranked in the 95th percentile in Batting Run Value and the 96th percentile in xBA.</p><p>The Red Sox are coming off a season that saw them reach the playoffs for the first time since 2021. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-perfect-ketel-marte-trade-proposal-they-must-offer-diamondbacks">Adding a player of Marte’s stature</a> could help them inch closer towards becoming a true contender.</p><p>Marte was the 2023 NLCS MVP during Arizona’s run to the World Series, and it is worth wondering if he could potentially have a similar impact in Boston.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Still, there’s no doubt that Marte is a talented player, with teams such as the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox,<a href="https://x.com/JonHeyman/status/1998055938507370767" rel="noopener"> and others having interest</a>, per Jon Heyman.</p><p>“Blue Jays among teams, along with Red Sox and others, interested in D-Backs superstar Ketel Marte. According to New York Post insider Jon Heyman, the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox are <a href="https://x.com/JonHeyman/status/1998055938507370767" rel="noopener">among the teams</a> vying for Marte.</p><p>“Blue Jays among teams, along with Red Sox and others, interested in D-Backs superstar Ketel Marte. Talks happening but nothing hot yet,” Heyman reported.</p><p>Marte signed a six-year, $116.5 million deal in April. With just one year of that deal gone, Marte could be on the move. But it is not for baseball reasons. Reports have surfaced that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/arizona-diamondbacks/diamondbacks-rumors-arizona-open-trading-diva-ketel-marte-offseason">Marte is not a fit in the Diamondbacks clubhouse</a>, which has led to these rumors. With over $100 million left on the deal, only big-market teams are in on these conversations.</p><p>Marte has been among the best second basemen in the league since his emergence in 2019. The Diamondbacks weren’t particularly good in 2019, but Marte hit 32 homers and posted a 6.9 bWAR, finishing fourth in MVP voting. After a few slow seasons, he has put together three more great seasons from 2023-25.</p><p>The Blue Jays may lose Bo Bichette in free agency, and Marte is cheaper in terms of money than the shortstop would be. Andres Gimenez could move to shortstop, and Marte would be the second baseman. He would help replace Bichette’s offense and the defense would still be solid.</p><p>It is harder to find a fit for Marte on the Red Sox, unless they move on from a top prospect. Kristian Campbell signed a pre-arb extension with Boston and is supposed to be the second baseman of the future. Unless he is part of the return for Arizona, it would not make sense to have Marte and Campbell on the same team on long-term deals.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

While the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/arizona-diamondbacks/diamondbacks-rumors-arizona-bring-zac-gallen-merrill-kelly-back-free-agency">Diamondbacks could very well re-sign Gallen</a> themselves, Arizona has added another starting pitcher to the mix just in case.</p><p>Mike Soroka <a href="https://x.com/JeffPassan/status/1998035264741285960" rel="noopener">has agreed to a one-year deal</a> with the Diamondbacks, pending physical, via Jeff Passan and Jesse Rogers of ESPN. The financials of his deal has not yet been revealed.</p><p>That physical aspect will be crucial to Soroka’s signing. He has dealt with numerous injuries throughout his career, including a pair of Achilles issues that required surgery. Still, Soroka managed to appear in 22 games between the Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs in 2025.</p><p>The righty compiled a 4.52 ERA and an 87/24 K/BB ratio over 89.2 innings. He did look better after his trade to the Cubs, allowing one run in his just over eight innings pitched. That small a sample size is hard to predict how Soroka will fare entering 2026.</p><p>But the Diamondbacks clearly have faith in him. On a one-year deal, they aren’t risking too much. Still, Arizona has clear needs across their rotation. Gallen is a free agent and they traded away Merrill Kelly – who is also a free agent – at the deadline. Corbin Burnes is making his way back from elbow surgery.</p><p>Soroka won’t fix all of the Diamondbacks’ problems alone. But Arizona is at least aware of one of the figures who will command a role in their rotation. Pittsburgh has a valuable asset in starting pitcher Paul Skenes, but not enough run support to help him. One Major League Baseball columnist <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2025/12/07/mlb-winter-meetings-trade-rumors-free-agents/87655377007/" rel="noopener">is urging the Bucs to trade</a> with the Arizona Diamondbacks for infielder Ketel Marte.</p><p>“If they really want to be aggressive, they’ve got the pitching depth to trade for Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte,” USA Today reporter Bob Nightengale wrote on Sunday.</p><p>Nightengale argues that the Pirates have the payroll to make a deal for the Arizona infielder.</p><p>“The biggest star who is a realistic candidate to be traded is Ketel Marte. He comes with a relatively modest contract ($92 million) and is under control through 2031. The D-backs however, believe now is the time to sever ties, and are in desperate need for pitching,” Nightengale added.</p><p>During the 2025 season, Marte hit at a .283 batting average with 28 home runs and 72 RBIs. The Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays and Detroit Tigers are also rumored to be interested in him.</p><h2><b>The Pirates need offense to return to the MLB Playoffs</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Jack-Suwinski-.jpg"><figcaption>Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images.</figcaption></figure><p>Pittsburgh finished the 2025 season with a 71-91 record. Pittsburgh finished dead last in almost every statistical category for offense in MLB. Pittsburgh didn’t win over too many fans with their trade deadline moves, as David Bednar, Ke’Bryan Hayes and others left in the late summer.</p><p>Pirates fans are thirsting for the team to win before Skenes leaves town. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/pittsburgh-pirates/pirates-news-paul-skenes-admits-frustration-yankees-rumor-now-over-it">Skenes was rumored to be wanting to head to the New York Yankees</a>. The star pitcher refuted those reports.</p><p>Time will tell if Pittsburgh can add that needed offense. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/pittsburgh-pirates/pirates-rumors-most-exciting-move-planned-josh-naylor-bid-fails">Pirates lost out on Josh Naylor after making a push for him</a>, and were previously mentioned as a contender to land free-agent Kyle Schwarber.</p><p>Pittsburgh hasn’t made the postseason since the 2015 season. Free agency is open, and there are a bunch of teams looking to improve their rosters this winter. The Arizona Diamondbacks are a team in need of starting pitching and are <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/arizona-diamondbacks/diamondbacks-rumors-why-time-is-now-to-trade-ketel-marte">open to trading their star player</a> to get what they need in return.</p><p>Ketel Marte is one of the best offensive players in baseball, and when healthy, is an MVP candidate. Marte has already proven to play multiple positions in his career. With the D-Backs, he has been their star second baseman. Replacing his production will not be easy; however, the D-Backs already have a potent offense. Their rotation is very thin and banged up. It’s unclear when Corbin Burnes will return from Tommy John rehab, and if the Diamondbacks begin the season with their current rotation, they will be in a lot of trouble.</p><p>Trading Marte <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2025/12/02/mlb-trade-rumors-targets-winter-meetings-tarik-skubal/87560098007/" rel="noopener">is a real possibility</a>. The Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, and Tampa Bay Rays are all interested, according to Bob Nightengale.</p><p>“The Diamondbacks continue to have operators standing by ready to field your phone calls. They have told anyone and everyone they are willing to listen to offers for their All-Star second baseman, who signed a six-year, $116.5 million deal last spring with $46 million in deferred money. The D-backs want pitching, and lots of it, in return.”</p><p>These three organizations have one thing in common: depth at pitching.</p><p>The Red Sox added Sonny Gray recently to become their No. 2 starter. Behind Garrett Crochet, the Sox have two solid pitchers to go toe-to-toe with other rotations. The Sox do have depth in the rotation with Brayan Bello, Kyle Harrison, Kutter Crawford, Payton Tolle, Tanner Houck, and Patrick Sandoval. A couple of those names Boston wants to keep, but the D-Backs could consider some of those names paired with a top prospect for Marte.</p><p>Detroit has the best pitcher in baseball, Tarik Skubal. Behind him are Casey Mize, Jack Flaherty, Jackson Jobe, Reese Olson, and Tyler Holton. They have the depth in the rotation as well.</p><p>The Rays aren’t known for making big trades to acquire talent. It will be interesting to see what they have to offer. Chief among them is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/arizona-diamondbacks/diamondbacks-rumors-why-time-is-now-to-trade-ketel-marte">whether or not to trade Ketel Marte</a>.</p><p>If the Diamondbacks do decide to trade Marte, there are sure to get a sizable return in exchange. Still, teams <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/47166190/mlb-offseason-2025-2026-trade-candidate-player-rankings-skubal-marte-buxton-peralta" rel="noopener">still aren’t too certain</a> whether or not the second baseman will be moved, via Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.</p><p>“Teams believe they’ll have a better sense after the winter meetings of the Diamondbacks’ seriousness about moving the best second baseman in baseball,” Passan and McDaniel wrote. “Marte has a very reasonable five years and $91 million (plus a sixth-year player option at $11.5 million) remaining on his contract, which means Arizona would want a whale of a return.”</p><p>Luckily for MLB franchises, the Winter Meetings start on Dec. 8, meaning they won’t have to wait long to figure out Marte’s status. If deemed available, the second baseman would arguably be the best player available on the trade market.</p><p>He is coming off of an All-Star campaign in 2025 in which he hit .283 with 28 home runs and 72 RBIs. Marte’s entire nine-year tenure with the Diamondbacks has produced a .283 batting average, 168 home runs, 537 RBIs and 65 stolen bases. He has been voted to three All-Star Games overall.</p><p>Part of the reason Arizona is considering a trade is due to the locker room culture he fostered. Some players took offense to him <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/arizona-diamondbacks/diamondbacks-rumors-arizona-open-trading-diva-ketel-marte-offseason">missing time while the Diamondbacks were in the heat of a playoff race</a>. If those emotions can’t be smoothed over, Marte is more likely to be dealt.</p><p>But the Diamondbacks know just how talented Marte is. If they’re keen on making it back to the playoffs, it could be beneficial to have the second baseman on their roster. But before making any serious decisions, the Diamondbacks made sure their catching depth was in place.</p><p>Arizona <a href="https://x.com/Ken_Rosenthal/status/1991964915310231835" rel="noopener">has signed</a> James McCann to a one-year contract, via Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. <a href="https://x.com/nickpiecoro/status/1991965639595217308" rel="noopener">He will make</a> $2.75 million with a potential $500,000 available in incentives, via Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.</p><p>McCann appeared in 42 games for the Diamondbacks in 2025, hitting .260 with five home runs and 17 RBIs. When he makes his first appearance the catcher will be playing in his 13th major league season. Over his first 12 years, McCann has hit .242 with 97 home runs, 390 RBIs and 15 stolen bases.</p><p>In Arizona, McCann will be playing behind Gabriel Moreno. The starting catcher hit .285 with nine home runs and 40 RBIs. He also won a Gold Glove in 2023. Under team control through 2029, he is slated to lead the Diamondbacks at the position for the foreseeable future.</p><p>While McCann’s signing will fly under the radar in the greater context of Arizona’s season, it takes a necessary out of the way early. The Diamondbacks are no longer concerned about who their backup catcher will be barring injury.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/arizona-diamondbacks/diamondbacks-rumors-why-time-is-now-to-trade-ketel-marte">The same can’t be said for the future of Ketel Marte</a>. Or how injuries to players such as Lourdes Gurriel, Corbin Burnes and Justin Martinez will affect the 2026 campaign. Winning in the NL West is hard enough. The Diamondbacks now need to decide how to move forward as an organization.
