Cleveland and Detroit were tied 1-1 for most of the game before the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/cleveland-guardians/guardians-news-cleveland-rare-history-forcing-game-3-vs-tigers">Guardians’ offense found its rhythm</a> in the 8th inning, ultimately scoring five unanswered runs. Infielder Bryan Rocchio got the scoring started in the inning with a solo home run — something Jose Ramirez <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6681604/2025/10/01/cleveland-guardians-brayan-rocchio-october-pressure/" rel="noopener">reportedly predicted</a>, according to Zack Meisel of The Athletic.</p><p>“As Rocchio approached the plate, Ramírez made a prediction to anyone within earshot in the dugout,” Meisel wrote in a recent article. “He called the home run.”</p><p>According to Meisel, Ramirez had previously told Rocchio to treat Tigers relief pitcher Troy Melton’s cutter as if it is a fastball as opposed to a slider. The inning changed the momentum of the series. Before Rocchio’s home run, the Guardians’ offense had struggled to find any kind of rhythm. They struggled in Game 1 and for most of Game 2.</p><p>Perhaps Wednesday’s 8th inning outburst will carry over into Thursday’s crucial Game 3. The winner of the contest will advance to the American League Division Series to play the Seattle Mariners.</p><p>Thursday’s first pitch is scheduled for 3:08 PM EST in Cleveland at Progressive Field. In fact, the Guardians trailed the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central by 15.5 games at one point earlier in the season. However, although Cleveland has yet to clinch the AL Central title (they are currently tied with the Tigers heading into the regular season finale on Sunday), the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/cleveland-guardians/guardians-news-cleveland-clinches-playoff-berth">Guardians were able to clinch a postseason spot</a> on Saturday with a 3-2 win over the Texas Rangers.</p><p>“We never quit,” third baseman Jose Ramirez <a href="https://x.com/MLBONFOX/status/1972120845171806405" rel="noopener">told</a> Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports after Saturday’s game. “That’s how we play.”</p><p>Ramirez, a superstar, led the Guardians throughout the season. He still somehow seems to be underrated, but Ramirez is consistently in the MVP conversation despite having yet to win the award. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/cleveland-guardians/guardians-news-jose-ramirez-alfonso-soriano-mlb-history-feat">Ramirez is one of the best players in baseball</a>.</p><p>All-Star outfielder Steven Kwan praised Ramirez while also echoing a similar sentiment to the superstar third baseman while speaking to Rosenthal.</p><p>“Just trusting each other,” Kwan said. “We got Jose Ramirez right there, he plays hard every single day. He runs hard 90’s. He does his defense, he does everything like you’re supposed to. When you got a guy like that at the top, we all have to follow suit.”</p><p>Cleveland still has work to do. The Guardians would love to enter the postseason as the AL Central division winner as opposed to just an AL Wild Card ball club. The fact that they are even in the postseason following their up and down start to the ’25 campaign is impressive, but the Guardians will do everything they can to take care of business on Sunday.</p><p>Cleveland can clinch a division title with a win against the Rangers. If the Guardians lose, they can still clinch the AL Central if the Tigers lose to the Boston Red Sox since Cleveland owns the tiebreaker with Detroit. The only way the Guardians can lose the division is if they drop their Sunday matchup against the Rangers and if the Tigers defeat the Red Sox.</p><p>In other words, Sunday’s contests will be must-watch baseball. Alfonso Soriano: 2002, 2006. That’s it,” Meisel wrote on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>Last season, Ramirez had 39 doubles, 39 home runs, and 41 steals.</p><p>With the Guardians in the AL Wild Card race, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/cleveland-guardians/guardians-news-jose-ramirez-passes-jim-thome-history">Ramirez has been lifting the Guardians</a> at the right time, and with the regular season close to an end in about a week, they’re going to need him at his best.</p><p>Ramirez is not new to being in MLB history. Just about a week ago, he stole his 280th career base, breaking a tie with Omar Vizquel for second on Cleveland’s all-time list, behind only Kenny Lofton’s 452. Among the primary third basemen in the Live Ball Era, only Chone Figgins has more steals.</p><p>Not only is Ramirez putting up these big numbers, but he also wants to win, as noted by Austin Hedges. That number moved him past Hall of Famer Jim Thome for <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/jose-ramirez-has-second-most-rbis-in-cleveland-history" rel="noopener">sole possession of second place</a> on Cleveland’s all-time list, according to Tim Stebbins of MLB.com. He now trails only Earl Averill, who holds the club record with 1,084 RBIs since the statistic became official in 1920.</p><p>Ramirez’s triple came off Tampa Bay reliever Garrett Cleavinger, who entered with a 20-inning scoreless streak, the longest active in the majors at the time. The hit scored by Angel Martinez broke Cleavinger’s streak, the first run he had allowed since July 5. After Ramirez was thrown out at the plate on a squeeze attempt, Gabriel Arias produced the eventual game-winning RBI single against Kevin Kelly, scoring David Fry.</p><p>The milestone ended a productive series for the 32-year-old third baseman. Across the four games in Tampa, Ramirez hit .438 (7-for-16) with a 1.346 OPS, collecting a home run, a triple, two doubles, four RBIs, and a stolen base. He extended his streak of consecutive games with an extra-base hit to four, the 24th such stretch of his career.</p><p>On Saturday, Ramirez also stole his 280th career base, breaking a tie with Omar Vizquel for second on Cleveland’s all-time list, behind only Kenny Lofton’s 452. Among primary third basemen in the Live Ball Era, only Chone Figgins (341) has more steals.</p><p>Guardians manager Stephen Vogt praised Ramirez’s consistency, while teammates acknowledged his daily impact. Ramirez himself noted that his approach on the bases was influenced by Jose Reyes, the longtime Mets shortstop who finished his career with 517 steals.</p><p>Rookie left-hander Parker Messick added to the weekend’s storyline with a strong homecoming start. Pitching just 30 miles from his hometown of Plant City, Fla., Messick worked six innings, allowing one run on eight hits with four strikeouts and no walks. He improved to 2-0 in just his fourth career outing, backed by a vocal crowd of roughly 250 friends and family.</p><p>Cleveland’s bullpen, a decisive factor in the series win, threw 11 1/3 scoreless innings across the four games. On Sunday, Matt Festa, Hunter Gaddis, and Cade Smith combined for three shutout frames, with Smith striking out the side in the ninth for his 11th save.</p><p>The Guardians won three of four against Tampa Bay, improving to 72-70 on the season. On Tuesday, Ramirez hit two home runs against the Florida Marlins. </p><p>His second home run <a href="https://x.com/ClutchPoints/status/1955435288567922750" rel="noopener">came in the 8th inning</a> with the game tied at three. His long drive to right field put the Guardians up 4-3. His first home run in the game came in the first inning to give the Guardians a 1-0 lead. As of now, Cleveland has a record of 62-56 and is six games behind the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central. </p><p>Meanwhile, Ramirez is batting .289 with 125 hits, 23 home runs, and 61 RBIs. In essence, he is playing a crucial role in keeping their playoff hopes alive. </p><p>Not only is his presence essential for this season, but it will be in the years ahead.
