He pitched for the Astros in April, but his shoulder issues have caused him to remain on the sidelines in May, June and July.</p><p>Urquidy has been rehabbing with Triple-A Sugarland. He struggled in his fourth and final rehab start last weekend, allowing 5 earned runs on nine hits over five innings. He threw 76 pitches in that outing and 56 of them went for strikes. The belief is that he could throw as many as 90 pitches in his first outing with the Astros.</p><p>The right-handed pitcher was 2-2 with a 5.20 earned run average during the first month of the season. He gave up 6 home runs in 27.2 innings of action before he went to the sidelines.</p><p>Jose Urquidy was 13-8 with a 3.94 ERA last year in 164.1 innings on the mound. Alvarez was actually in Seattle for the All-Star Game after being selected for the American League team, but the slugger hasn’t suited up since early June due to an oblique injury.</p><p>As for Urquidy, one of Dusty Baker’s most reliable starters in recent years, he last took the bump on April 30th. A shoulder issue has basically derailed his season to this point. The Mexican was struggling before going on the shelf though, compiling an ERA over five.</p><p>Alvarez is expected to be back with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/astros-news-houston-gm-reveals-number-one-priority-mlb-trade-deadline" rel="noopener">the Astros</a> at some point in their upcoming nine-game road trip to begin the second half. He’s batting .277 with 17 homers and 55 RBI in 57 games in 2023 and will add an immediate boost to this lineup once he returns. Urquidy meanwhile should likely join the ‘Stros soon as well, but he’ll probably need a few outings in the Minors before doing so.</p><p>In other injury news, Jose Altuve is still injured as well, this time with an oblique problem. It’s unclear when he could be on the field again, but GM Dana Brown did say recently that Altuve is healing faster than expected.</p><p>The defending World Series champions are very much in the race for the AL West title, sitting just two games back of the Texas Rangers with a 50-41 record. However, they are still trying to get <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/astros-news-houston-promising-yordan-alvarez-michael-brantley-injury-updates" rel="noopener">everybody healthy</a>, and two players still on the shelf are Jose Urquidy and Michael Brantley.</p><p>The Astros got updates on both players. Brantley’s <a href="https://twitter.com/Chandler_Rome/status/1675917897787658241" rel="noopener">status</a> isn’t encouraging one bit, per the latest from Dusty Baker (h/t Chandler Rome of The Athletic).</p><p>“He’s plateaued somewhat. We want to increase it, but then we don’t want to have to go backwards either. I’d rather have it plateau for a while then increase it.”</p><p>On the other hand, there is some <a href="https://twitter.com/matthewkawahara/status/1675909289603477516?s=20" rel="noopener">good news</a> regarding Urquidy (h/t Matt Kawahara of The Houston Chronicle).</p><p>‘José Urquidy is set to face hitters in live batting practice tomorrow. Dusty Baker said Michael Brantley won’t be part of it as Astros don’t think Brantley is ready yet for live BP.’</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/astros-news-jose-urquidy-worrying-take-leaving-start-shoulder-injury" rel="noopener">Urquidy has been out</a> since April 30 and has gone 2-2 on the year with a 5.20 ERA. He has been working hard to get back on time, and the fact that he is set to throw a live batting practice is terrific news.</p><p>Brantley, however, has yet to appear in a game for the Astro this season. In 2022, he played 64 games before suffering a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/astros-news-michael-brantley-drops-pivotal-health-update-after-missing-houstons-world-series-run" rel="noopener">season-ending injury,</a> and now things don’t look very promising with Baker saying he has “plateaued”.</p><p>The Astros have managed to survive with a flurry of injuries, and at least they should be getting Jose Urquidy back sometime soon. Things got worse on Sunday night when starting pitcher Jose Urquidy left the game with a possible shoulder injury.</p><p>Urquidy pitched into the sixth inning against the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday, allowing two runs on three hits. He was taken out of the game with one out in the top of the sixth after he pulled a pitch well out of the zone. Urquidy said after the game that they’ll wait and <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/jose-urquidy-shoulder-injury-astros-win?partnerID=mlbapp-iOS_article-share" rel="noopener">see how he feels</a> on Monday.</p><p>“I felt a little bit of pain in the back of my shoulder,” Urquidy said. “The last pitch, I was trying to throw a sinker there and I felt something a little bit weak in my shoulder and I decided to stop.”</p><p>Urquidy has been a reliable arm for the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/astros-news-jost-altuve-gets-promising-update-on-thumb-injury-recovery" rel="noopener">Astros over the last two</a> seasons. Since 2021 he has made 54 starts and has a 3.94 ERA. The Astros are 34-20 in those starts, including the win on Sunday.</p><p>Prior to the injury, Urquidy was having a wonderful bounce-back start after allowing 10 runs over his last two starts. He is someone the Astros need to rely on this season after the loss of ace Justin Verlander.</p><p>There is a hope that Jose Urquidy will only have to miss one start, as a long-term absence could be a devastating blow to the Astros’ pitching staff. Houston finished April with a 15-13 record and sit two games behind the Texas Rangers in the AL West standings.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
