They acquired reinforcements <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/grading-marlins-guardians-josh-bell-trade" rel="noopener">at the trade deadline</a> to keep up with the swarm of teams competing for a Wild Cards spot. Josh Bell, who they scooped up from the Cleveland Guardians, has been better than advertised.</p><p>Bell is on a six-game hitting streak and has reached base in every single game that he has played with Miami so far. Marlins manager Skip Schumaker loves what Bell brings to the team as <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/marlins-manager-skip-schumaker-reveals-why-josh-bell-is-the-perfect-fit-for-miami" rel="noopener">both a hitter and a leader</a>.</p><p>“He’s fit right in really quick and it hasn’t taken him long to be one of the vocal leaders in there,” Schumaker <a href="https://theathletic.com/4764011/2023/08/09/josh-bell-marlins-wild-card-race/" rel="noopener">said previously</a>, according to C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic. “And then when he produces after being a vocal leader, that’s when people start buying in on his messaging. He’s been just the perfect fit for us.”</p><p>Josh Bell was placed right in the three-spot in Miami’s order and hasn’t looked back. He recorded four hits in his Marlins debut and, across 43 total plate appearances in 10 games, has 12 hits (including four home runs and a pair of doubles), eight RBI and an OPS of 1.039. Only one player has hit more homers in his <a href="https://twitter.com/SlangsOnSports/status/1690160606299426816?s=20" rel="noopener">first nine games</a> with Miami. Although he has been a part of a recent five-game losing streak, his power is just what Miami has needed to keep them in stride with other playoff hopefuls.</p><p>Luis Arraez’s unreal hitting abilities give Bell someone to hit into scoring position or all the way home. Bell also serves as a much-needed power hitter for a team that is below average in slugging percentage, exit velocity and home run percentage. Fellow trade deadline acquisition Jake Burger has hitting power that he has not yet transferred from the Chicago White Sox to the Fish and Jorge Soler has some real pop, too.</p><p>The Marlins are now experimenting with using Bell ahead of Arraez <a href="https://twitter.com/Marlins/status/1690742992926048256?s=20" rel="noopener">in the lineup</a>, putting them in the two and three hole respectively with Jazz Chisholm Jr. leading off and Bryan De La Cruz hitting cleanup. Using Bell’s ability to get on base, Miami is hoping that Arraez can be the one to put him in favorable spots on the base paths.</p><p>Not only has Josh Bell been great on the field for the Marlins but he has also been great in the clubhouse. That’s the impression that the team got before trading for him. The reviews have all come back positive, which fits very well with the surprisingly successful season Miami is having.</p><p>“Everybody said this guy had a 10-out-of-10 character and was a hard worker,” Schumaker said, via The Athletic. “He gives you everything he’s got. He’s a winning player. Once you hear ‘winning player’ that’s what we’re trying to add here. The culture we’re trying to create is a winning atmosphere and that’s why I think he blends in so well.”</p><p>With the current standings, the Marlins trail the Philadelphia Phillies, San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs in the Wild Card race. They’re tied with the Cincinnati Reds and the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres are not too far behind. The Marlins and Red Sox had extensive discussions about <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-red-sox-latest-stance-justin-turner-trade-revealed" rel="noopener">a Justin Turner trade</a>, The Athletic reports. Miami thought <a href="https://theathletic.com/4746362/2023/08/03/red-sox-trade-justin-turner-marlins-the-windup/?source=mlbtw">it was close</a> to completing a trade for Justin Turner until talks fell through, according to The Athletic.</p><p>When the Marlins failed to land Turner from the Red Sox, they shifted gears. Miami <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/white-sox-chicago-continues-fire-sale-marlins-trade" rel="noopener">pried Burger away</a> from the Chicago White Sox in an unexpected move. Turner has played a big role in keeping the Red Sox in contention.</p><p>Turner is hitting .286/.356/.481 with 17 home runs and 71 RBI in 102 games. Only Rafael Devers has hit more homers and driven in more runs for the Red Sox in 2023. Turner’s .837 OPS is good for 14th in the American League.</p><p>Bell and Burger made an immediate impact for the Marlins. Both players debuted with Miami in <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/trea-turner-gets-honest-after-loss-marlins" rel="noopener">the Marlins’ 9-8 win</a> over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday. Amongst <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/josh-bell-jake-burger-marlins-trades" rel="noopener">their many trades</a> was landing Josh Bell from the Cleveland Guardians.</p><p>In acquiring Bell, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/marlins-news-josh-bell-guardians-trade-jean-segura" rel="noopener">Marlins are attempting</a> to address their seemingly constant need for offense. Miami ranks 27th in runs scored (439) and 28th in home runs (96). With Bell now at first base, the Marlins are looking for him to bring some pop to the lineup.</p><p>For Cleveland, trading Bell furthermore <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/grading-rays-guardians-aaron-civale-trade" rel="noopener">pointed to the Guardians punting</a> the 2023 season with their focus towards the future. Bell’s departure gave Cleveland a prospect with major potential moving forward.</p><p>The Marlins and Guardians are both headed in different directions, at least during the 2023 season. With their Josh Bell trade serving two separate purposes, how do both teams grade out?</p><h2><b>Marlins Grade</b></h2><p>At 57-51, the Marlins are 13 games back in the NL East. However, they’re just half game out of securing a Wild Card spot. Miami decided to go for it at the trade deadline and bring in some reinforcements.</p><p>After acquiring Bell, the first baseman should hit towards the top of the lineup. Through 97 games with the Guardians this season, Bell hit .233 with 11 home runs and 48 RBI. While his batting average is down, the slugger still has his power stroke. Outside of the shortened 2020 season, Bell has hit 10+ home runs every year since 2017 and 15+ home runs in four of those seasons.</p><p>Currently, Jorge Soler leads the Marlins with 25 home runs. However, he is the only player with 15+ home runs this season and one of only four players to have 10+ round trippers.</p><p>Josh Bell might not be the All-Star caliber player he was back in 2019. However, he is still walking dynamite and could go yard on any pitch. The Marlins were in search of power at the deadline and found their first baseman in Bell.</p><h2> <b>Grade: A-</b></h2><h2><b>Guardians Grade</b></h2><p>The Guardians are only two games back in the AL Central at 53-55. However, they’re only shot at the playoffs is the AL Central as they’re out of the Wild Card race. While they could still compete with the Minnesota Twins, they didn’t look much like contenders at the deadline.</p><p>Alongside Bell, Cleveland traded Aaron Civale to the Tampa Bay Rays. Bell has a player option for the 2024 season. Rather than let him walk in what could potentially be a losing season, the Guardians decided to cut ties.</p><p>In return, the Guardians received Jean Segura and prospect Khalil Watson. Watson is the crown jewel of the deal, as he now ranks as the <a href="https://www.mlb.com/prospects/guardians/" rel="noopener">15th-best prospect</a> in the Guardians’ organization, via MLB Pipeline. He has spent the majority of the year at the Single-A level, hitting .206 with seven home runs, 22 RBI and 14 stolen bases over 58 games.</p><p>The only knock against the Guardians is not going for an AL Central title with it so in reach. However, it was clear that Cleveland wasn’t going to compete for a World Series this year. Rather than let Bell just leave, the Guardians took a shot on Watson and are hoping for brighter days next season.</p><h2><b>Grade: B+</b></h2><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

His in-depth knowledge of two of the most passionate and raucous fan bases in the country gives him a truly unique writing voice.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">MLB</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The Miami Marlins <a href="https://twitter.com/JeffPassan/status/1686499771320578048" rel="noopener">are trading</a> for Cleveland Guardians first baseman and designated hitter Josh Bell in return for veteran infielder Jean Segura and prospect Kahlil Watson, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan.</p><p>Segura was <a href="https://twitter.com/ZackMeisel/status/1686505149714370562" rel="noopener">promptly released</a> from his new home and “is owed the rest of his salary this year, $8.5M for next season plus a $2M buyout for ’25,” Zack Meisel of The Athletic reported. </p><p>Miami was clearly intent on <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/white-sox-chicago-continues-fire-sale-marlins-trade" rel="noopener">adding some more pop</a> to the lineup before the deadline ended. It was an uncharacteristically busy week for a franchise that has not really been in position to compete on the open trade market in well over a decade.</p><p>Marlins general manager Kim Ng made it count by adding multiple players who fill glaring needs. Though, she and the front office are banking on Bell rediscovering his past self rather than acquiring him based on the player he has been lately.</p><p>The 2019 All-Star is batting just .233 with 11 home runs and 48 RBIs in 97 games this year. Miami has posted a top-five team batting average so far but ranks 28th in homers. Segura, a two-time All-Star in his own right, was not helping on either front with his .219 batting average and three long balls.</p><p>Despite being just a half-game out of first place in the woeful American League Central, the Guardians revealed themselves to be sellers when they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rays-acquire-aaron-civale-in-trade-with-guardians" rel="noopener">dealt starting pitcher Aaron Civale</a> to the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday. With or without that prior trade, moving Bell was extremely practical given that he will probably exercise a $16.5 million player option this offseason.</p><p>Segura feels like a guy tailor-made for the club, but clearly GM Mike Chernoff and the organization are looking mainly towards the future. Infielder Kahlil Watson was the <a href="https://www.mlb.com/prospects/marlins" rel="noopener">No. 4 ranked prospect</a> in the Marlins system, per MLB.com, but is still a ways off from making his MLB debut. He batted .206 with seven dingers in 58 games in High-A ball this season.</p><p>While having two vastly different approaches ahead of the MLB trade deadline, these two small-market franchises made sure to continue building towards their respective goals.
