Manager Alex Cora has a number of promising and productive position players he can call upon. The problem, however, is that half the lineup is falling well short of expectations. Triston Casas is one of a few core players who is noticeably struggling in the early portion of the season.</p><p>The 25-year-old first baseman flashed All-Star upside when he belted 24 home runs and posted a .490 slugging percentage during his rookie 2023 campaign. A rib injury (torn cartilage) decimated his 2024 season, limiting him to only 63 games. The hope is that a healthy Casas establishes himself as one of the best power hitters in baseball.</p><p>But he is not looking like the same guy who displayed a wealth of promise in the second half of 2023. The No. 26 overall selection in the 2018 MLB Draft has a meager .175 batting average, .242 on-base percentage, .281 slugging percentage and .523 OPS in 16 games for the Red Sox. The extended slump is reminiscent of the brutally slow start he lumbered through as a rookie, so perhaps an ice cold April is just part of the one-of-a-kind <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-triston-casas-rafael-devers-comments-alex-cora-response">Triston Casas experience</a>.</p><p>Or, maybe it is not that simple. The 6-foot-4 native of Florida, who is generally lauded for the meticulous approach he takes at the plate, is not exhibiting the poise Boston has become accustomed to seeing. Cora is aware of some of the <a href="https://x.com/IanMBrowne/status/1912258902508626391" rel="noopener">decision-making issues</a> that are presently plaguing the left-handed hitter.</p><h2><b>Red Sox want Triston Casas to stick to the process that helped him break out</b></h2><p>“In between. He hasn’t played that much either, and he’s still learning his swing, his craft,” the 2018 World Series-winning skipper said, per MLB.com’s Ian Browne. “And one thing from Day One that I noticed, when he got called up, there was a lot of conviction behind his plan. Right now, he’s not there.</p><p>“You can see him taking fastballs in the middle of zone. You can see his takes. They’re a little bit hesitant, 3-2 takes, pitches in the zone that he will usually at least foul it off, he’s not doing that. He’s not walking either. And that’s a part of his game.”</p><p>People will talk about Casas’ eccentric nature or his endless gift of gab, which is magnified following the release of Netflix’s “The Clubhouse: A Year with the Red Sox,” but he can silence all the chatter by having good at-bats. Casas is unlikely to boost his numbers until he regains his confidence at the dish.</p><p>He aims to get on track in Tuesday’s road game versus the Tampa Bay Rays.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Rays tagged the Red Sox for nine runs in the third inning alone, and by the time that fateful half-inning ended, the Red Sox found themselves down 14-1 — which should trigger the mercy rule on MLB The Show next inning.</p><p>Over the course of a 162-game season, losses like this shouldn’t get a team too down. After all, this still counts as just one defeat on the win-loss column, and they can easily redeem themselves later tonight on the second game of the series. But losses like this require someone to take accountability, and Red Sox manager Alex Cora <a href="https://twitter.com/tylermilliken_/status/1911963462294524283" rel="noopener">took the initiative to do so</a>.</p><p>“It seems like there was a team that was prepared for the other one. The other one wasn’t prepared for them. And that goes from the top all the way to the bottom. That wasn’t a good night for us. The pitcher immediately excels in Boston, proving that he can handle the pressure of a big-market. There are two specific pitchers who those two sentences could describe — Chris Sale and Garrett Crochet.</p><p>Sale led Boston to a World Series victory in 2018. It seemed as if the Red Sox had certainly made the right decision by trading for him. Then 2019 happened.</p><p>Sale pitched to a lackluster 4.40 ERA across 25 starts. From 2020-2022, the left-handed hurler was limited to a total of 11 big league starts due to injury. In 2023, he struggled over 20 starts, recording a 4.30 ERA. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/braves-news-atlanta-reason-chris-sale-trade-red-sox">Red Sox ultimately traded Sale to the Atlanta Braves</a> following the ’23 campaign.</p><p>Sale rewarded Atlanta by winning the National League Cy Young, but that’s besides the point.</p><p>Sale’s time with the Red Sox, aside from his first season, simply did not go to plan. Injuries unquestionably played a role, but he struggled for the most part as well.</p><p>With Crochet, the left-handed pitcher has also started his Red Sox career especially strong. He has pitched to 1.38 ERA up to this point. Additionally, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/red-sox-news-garrett-crochet-reacts-near-no-hitter-revenge-outing-white-sox">Crochet fell just a couple innings short of no-hitting the White Sox</a> in a recent start.</p><p>Will Crochet’s Red Sox career follow a similar trajectory to Sale’s, or will it be different?</p><h2><b>Garrett Crochet poised for successful Red Sox career</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Garrett-Crochet-pitching-at-Fenway-Park.jpg"><figcaption>Eric Canha-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>In a sense, Crochet will get to further establish himself as a star with the Red Sox. Sale had already pitched for seven years before getting traded to Boston. Crochet, however, has technically only pitched in four seasons at the MLB level. The left-handed pitcher has only appeared in 25 or more games on two separate occasions.</p><p>In 2020, Crochet made five appearances out of the bullpen. The White Sox continued to use him as a reliever in 2021, as he appeared in 54 games in relief. He ended up missing all of 2022 due to injury. Crochet returned in 2023 as a reliever once again, pitching in 13 games.</p><p>It wasn’t until 2024 that Crochet became a full-time MLB starting pitcher. He found no shortage of success, turning in a 3.58 ERA across 32 starts.</p><p>Sale also pitched in relief in his first two seasons with the White Sox. Chicago had him begin to start games in 2011, which was his third year in the league.</p><p>From 2011-2016 before the trade, Sale started 148 games. Crochet, meanwhile, had started only 32 games before this season.</p><p>Crochet is fresh. He should have plenty left in the tank. Sale bounced back in 2024, but he was clearly running out of gas with the Red Sox. Crochet was mowing down his former teammates all day long, as he racked up 11 strikeouts while giving up the aforementioned hit and one walk along the way. After the game, Crochet made it clear he was <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/garrett-crochet-takes-no-hitter-into-eighth-inning" rel="noopener">ready to go the distance</a> if he didn’t give up a hit to Meidroth.</p><p>“I felt like I kept a lot in reserve,” Crochet said. “I didn’t really start ramping it up there in velo until later in the game. I feel like I could’ve thrown five more innings. After getting Michael A. Taylor to pop out for the first out, infielder Chase Meidroth, who was in the blockbuster trade that sent Crochet to the Red Sox, broke up the no-hitter with a single to left field.</p><p>The White Sox sent <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/red-sox-news-garrett-crochet-blunt-take-white-soxs-future-trade">Crochet to the Red Sox</a> for a <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/42914221/sources-red-sox-finalizing-trade-garrett-crochet" rel="noopener">prospect package that included</a> Meidroth, catcher Kyle Teel, outfielder Braden Montgomery and right-handed pitcher Wikelman Gonzalez in the trade. Teel was the headliner in the trade, but Meidroth figures to be a piece for the future for the White Sox. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-garrett-crochets-170-million-contract-best-vote">Red Sox extended Crochet for $170 million</a> recently.</p><p>Red Sox manager Alex Cora immediately pulled Crochet after Meidroth’s single, turning to Garrett Whitlock. It was not exactly smooth, as back-to-back singles by Brooks Baldwin and Matt Thaiss cut Boston’s lead to 2-1, but Whitlock was able to hold it there.</p><p>Crochet ended up with 7.1 innings pitched with one earned run, one walk and 11 strikeouts. It is a bit unfortunate that he got an earned run added to his line, but this is the type of performance that the Red Sox were expecting when they acquired him. Crochet is one of the best pitchers in baseball on a per-inning basis, but the question was regarding his health, as he has not been a starting pitcher for long.</p><p>The Red Sox did extend the lead back to two, as a Trevor Story home run made the score 3-1 in the top of the ninth inning. Aroldis Chapman closed it out in the bottom of the 9th inning, and Boston was able to salvage the third game of the series against Chicago. It was a disappointing weekend to lose a series to one of the weaker teams in MLB, but the Red Sox move to 8-9 overall and are still very much in the thick of what should be a tight AL East race.</p><p>Up next for the Red Sox is a series against the Tampa Bay Rays starting on Monday at George M. Now that he’s headed to the injured list, the Red Sox have promoted former Rookie of the Year Michael Fulmer back to the majors for the first time since 2023.</p><p>Fulmer broke into the big leagues back in 2016 with the Detroit Tigers, immediately winning Rookie of the Year and then earning an All-Star selection in 2017. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/chicago-cubs/cubs-news-michael-fulmer-out-2024-season-ucl-surgery">Injuries</a> and poor pitching derailed his career, even after he briefly appeared to find his way as a reliever in 2021. Now, he’s <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/44658101/michael-fulmer-called-red-sox-tommy-john-return" rel="noopener">getting another shot</a> with the Red Sox, presumably as a starting pitcher, in Fitts’ absence.</p><p>“Former American League Rookie of the Year Michael Fulmer, returning from Tommy John surgery, was brought up from the minor leagues Sunday when the Boston Red Sox placed right-hander Richard Fitts on the 15-day injured list with a right pectoral strain,” ESPN reported.</p><h2><b>Red Sox hoping Michael Fulmer can return to form with Red Sox</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/The-Red-Sox-have-been-widely-inconsistent-early-in-the-season.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: Kim Klement Neitzel-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Whether or not Fulmer has anything left in the tank remains to be seen, but he’s been decent through three outings in Triple-A to start the season, allowing four earned runs over 11.2 innings of work, while also picking up 18 strikeouts. Doing so at the major league level is obviously a completely different task, but Fulmer has proven in the past he’s capable of being an All-Star caliber pitcher.</p><p>Fulmer’s stint in the majors may not ultimately be that long, as Boston has Brayan Bello, Lucas Giolito, and Liam Hendriks closing in on their own returns from injury. With his new team facing off against his old team, Crochet kept it 100% real when discussing the White Sox and their future now that he finds himself on the Red Sox.</p><p>For a point in time, Crochet appeared set to be a key piece of Chicago’s future, but now, he’s set to lead Boston’s starting rotation for the foreseeable future after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-garrett-crochets-170-million-contract-best-vote">signing a six-year, $170 million contract extension</a> with the team shortly after the start of the 2025 campaign. It will be up to Crochet to help his new squad avoid an embarrassing sweep, as he will take the mound on Sunday afternoon for the Red Sox when they take on the White Sox at 2:10 p.m. ET. As  a result, O’Brien set up his broadcast partner, saying “the White Sox invent ways to lose games.”</p><p>Middlebrooks did not hesitate, saying the trip to Chicago to play the White Sox was “coming along at the perfect time.”</p><p>Instead of rolling into the Windy City and wiping the South Side with the White Sox, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/red-sox-news-garrett-crochet-drops-truth-bomb-on-new-red-sox-catcher">the Red Sox</a> have lost the first two games of the series and are in danger of getting swept.</p><p>Chicago rolled over the Red Sox in their Friday night game at Rate Field by an 11-1 margin. Boston manager Alex Cora used the term “embarrassing” to describe the Red Sox effort in that game. They started the year by losing four of their first five games against the Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles. They followed that by winning five games in a row, earning two road wins against Baltimore before sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals in a three-game series at Fenway Park.</p><p>Since finishing off St. Louis, the Red Sox have dropped five of their last six games. The lack of clutch hitting has been the biggest issue in their most recent poor run. First baseman Triston Casas has been their biggest culprit as he is slashing .176/.236/.294 with 1 home run and 3 RBI while striking out 16 times in 51 at bats. He is also struggling in the field, committing a key error in the Friday night loss and letting another base hit sneak under his glove.</p><p>Casas is not the only problem as Rafael Devers has fanned 21 times and All-Star Jarren Duran is hitting just .231 and has yet to hit a home run.</p><p>The Red Sox will try to take the final game of the series when ex-White Sox star Garrett Crochet takes the mound Sunday.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The biggest move they made in the offseason was trading for powerful left-handed pitcher Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox, and he is off to a notable start with his new team.</p><p>The Red Sox suffered a key blow early in the season when starting catcher Connor Wong suffered a fractured little finger on his catching hand and was placed on the Injured List. As a result, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/red-sox-news-alex-cora-doesnt-hold-back-embarrassing-white-sox-loss">Red Sox signed</a> veteran catcher Yasmani Grandal to a minor league contract. Once Grandal gets a few games under his belt, the Red Sox could elevate him to the big league club.</p><p>If they do, the move will get the stamp of approval from Crochet. The two worked together when both were with the Chicago White Sox. While he had a 6-12 record, he had a 3.58 earned run average for a team that set the record for the most losses in the modern era.</p><p>He is off to an excellent start with the Red Sox. Crochet has a 1.45 ERA in his first 18.2 innings, striking out 17 batters and compiling a 1-1 record. He is scheduled to start Boston’s Sunday afternoon game against the White Sox in Chicago.</p><p>Grandal has played 13 seasons in the big leagues, including four years as a primary catcher for the White Sox. He has hit 194 home runs in his career and driven in 592 runs. Grandal is a two-time All-Star, and he had his best season with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2019 when he hammered 28 home runs and drove in 77 runs.</p><p>The catcher is known for his framing ability behind the plate, but he has struggled when it comes to throwing out base runners at this point in his career. During a recent media availability, the Boston Red Sox star pitcher <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/garrett-crochet-discusses-joining-red-sox-in-return-to-chicago" rel="noopener">revealed the mindset</a> he takes into every start, via Scott Merkin of MLB.com.</p><p>Spoiler alert: Red Sox fans will absolutely love what Crochet said.</p><p>“I’m chasing greatness every time I touch the mound,” Crochet said. “Everybody is. I want to throw a complete-game, no-hitter. And then as soon as the first hit’s given up, I’m like, ‘All right, let’s move on.’ But it’s just seeing how many zeros I can put up every time I go out there.”</p><p>Trying to throw a no-hitter each time he takes the mound? Sox fans won’t complain about that.</p><p>In all reality, many big league pitchers take the mound with this mentality. Once the first hit is given up, they move on and pitch a bit more carefree. The thought of turning in a no-hitter — or even a perfect game — is a driving force for many hurlers in each start, though.</p><p>Garrett Crochet unquestionably features the potential to completely silence an opposing lineup in any given outing. There is a reason why the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/red-sox-news-boston-garrett-crochet-agree-to-monster-170-million-extension">Red Sox signed Crochet</a> to a $170 million contract extension. Boston does not care if he throws no-hitters, though. The Red Sox will be content with quality starts on a consistent basis.</p><p>And heck, if he wants to mix in some shutouts, complete games and no-hitters, the team certainly won’t mind.</p><p>At the moment, Garrett Crochet and the Red Sox are in Chicago playing the left-hander’s former team, the White Sox. Not much went right for the Red Sox in this one, and after the game, their manager Alex Cora did not hold back when discussing his team’s performance.</p><p>The story of Boston’s season so far has been their <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/red-sox-news-rafael-devers-nightmare-finally-over">inability to drive in runs on a nightly basis</a>. While that was an issue once again, it wasn’t the only one. Sean Newcomb struggled on the mound once again, and defense behind the pitching staff was atrocious, as the team committed five errors, which contributed to five of Chicago’s 11 runs. Cora made it clear after the game that everyone knew it was a “<a href="https://www.masslive.com/redsox/2025/04/alex-cora-on-red-sox-5-error-night-horrible-but-you-cannot-panic.html" rel="noopener">horrible</a>” outing for the Red Sox.</p><p>“It’s a horrible night. We know it,” said Cora. “Everybody knows it (in) there (the clubhouse). It’s a horrible night in every aspect of the game.”</p><h2><b>Alex Cora, Red Sox looking to bounce back after ugly loss to White Sox</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Alex-Cora.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: Jerome Miron-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>With this loss, the Red Sox fell back below .500 as their roller-coaster ride to start the season has continued. While they have had big series wins against the Baltimore Orioles, they dropped three of four games against both the Blue Jays and Texas Rangers, and now, they got mopped by one of the worst teams in the league in Chicago.</p><p>Slow starts aren’t impossible to overcome, but Boston needs to begin playing better in all three phases of the game if they want to make a postseason run like they are expected to after putting together a strong offseason of work. The Red Sox will be back in action on Saturday afternoon, where they will send Richard Fitts to the mound against their old friend Martin Perez as they look to push their record back up to .500.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

After getting hot and winning five straight, the team hit a three-game skid and faced a four-game sweep by the Toronto Blue Jays. Boston sent Walker Buehler to the mound Thursday. The Red Sox landed the two-time All-Star on a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-walker-buehler-agrees-21-million-contract-boston">one-year, $21.05 million contract</a> this offseason.</p><p>While Buehler is expected to vastly improve the team’s rotation, he got off to a rocky start in 2025. But on Thursday, he appeared to <a href="https://x.com/NESN/status/1910483606176137507" rel="noopener">turn a corner</a>.</p><p>“I just felt more violent than I have in a long time. That’s how I play when I’m good. So I’m pretty pleased with it,” Buehler explained to reporters after the outing, per NESN on X.</p><p>“This week was a big one for me just in terms of workload because I’m trying to figure it out, and I’m kind of tired of sucking. So you know, I kind of pushed my chips a little bit more in the table this week than I typically have. And for that to pay off is kind of a big win for me personally… today felt like a big game for as early as it is in the year,” Buehler noted, via NESN.</p><h2><b>Walker Buehler hopes to return to form with the Red Sox</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Walker-Buehler.jpg"><figcaption>Paul Rutherford-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The veteran righty had his best start in some time against the Blue Jays. Buehler went 6.1 innings and allowed just one run on four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. However, he was engaged in a pitching duel with Toronto’s Chris Bassitt, who tossed 5.2 innings and allowed one run on five hits with five strikeouts.</p><p>Still, Buehler kept the Red Sox in the game, and Boston was able to tie things up in the eighth before rallying for the win in the 10th inning and avoiding the sweep at home. After giving up nine earned runs in 9.1 innings over his first two starts this season, Buehler looked comfortable on the mound Thursday.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-walker-buehler-reveals-why-he-left-dodgers-for-red-sox">Buehler left the Dodgers for the Red Sox</a> this offseason after helping the team’s playoff push in 2024, which included recording the final out against the Yankees in the World Series.
