The Mets built a 5.5 game lead over the Phillies in the NL East before a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-mets/mets-news-juan-soto-truth-bomb-snap-7-game-losing-streak">seven-game losing streak</a> kicked off a multi-week slump. After back-to-back blowout losses to the Pittsburgh Pirates, New York needed to talk about it.</p><p>The Mets held a players’ only meeting following Saturday’s 9-2 defeat in Pittsburgh and Juan Soto is reportedly one of the team members <a href="https://x.com/NYPost_Mets/status/1939133134634963104" rel="noopener">who spoke</a>, per the New York Post’s Mike Puma. Soto kept his message simple, saying, “Keep going. Believe in it.”</p><h2><b>As Juan Soto heats up, the Mets cool down</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Juan-Soto-2-1.jpg"><figcaption>Brett Davis-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Soto has been one of the Mets’ few bright spots during a disastrous stretch. The team has gone just 3-12 since taking a 5.5 game lead in the division on June 12. But Soto hasn’t been the problem.</p><p>The Mets’ $765 million man had a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-mets/mets-news-juan-soto-truth-bomb-slow-start-tenure-new-york">difficult time adjusting to his new team</a>, causing an alarmingly slow start. Soto slashed .229/.355/.400 with 8 home runs 26 RBI and 34 runs scored over his first 56 games with the Mets.</p><p>But the four-time All-Star has looked like a completely different player in June. Or, he stopped looking like a completely different player.</p><p>Either way, over his last 26 games Soto is slashing a blistering .329/.491/.788 with 12 home runs, 20 RBI and 27 runs scored. Those stats would put him on a 162-game pace for 75 home runs, 125 RBI and 168 runs scored. So, yeah, he’s been hot in June.</p><p>While the Mets’ bats were silenced in Friday’s humbling loss to the Pirates, Soto prevented a shutout with his <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-mets/mets-news-juan-soto-nails-pirates-20th-ny-home-run">20th home run of the season</a>. Two games earlier <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-mets/mets-news-juan-soto-rare-feat-last-done-1987-darryl-strawberry">Soto made Mets history</a>, joining Darryl Strawberry as the only players in franchise history with 10 homers and 20 walks in a calendar month.</p><p>In that same contest Soto also broke Jimmie Foxx’s record for the most multi-homer games before turning 27. Soto hit two bombs against the Braves, setting the all-time record with his 27th multi-homer game.</p><p>Despite Soto’s recent surge, the Mets are struggling. He has now become the face of the other New York team, for better or worse. Soto and Mets manager have had their differences, but he has returned to form.</p><p>He got New York on the board against the Pittsburgh Pirates in their series opener on Friday. In the top of the fourth inning, the All-Star outfielder took Mitch Keller deep on a <a href="https://twitter.com/ClutchPoints/status/1938750351483740309" rel="noopener">416ft. solo-shot</a>. Kodai Senga and Sean Manaea are still out and are each a few weeks away from their returns. Griffin Canning tore his Achilles in his last start. In the meantime, New York hopes they can tread water in the National League East.</p><p>The Mets have a chance to put some distance between themselves and the Philadelphia Phillies this weekend. Keller and the Pirates have been struggling all season. On the other hand, the Atlanta Braves appear to have figured something out at the plate. If New York handles business, they could open up their lead over Philadelphia.</p><p>Regardless of their place in the standings, the Mets hope that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-mets/mets-news-juan-soto-shatters-mlb-record-vs-braves">Soto’s hot streak continues</a>. Mendoza does not need him to carry the load as much as he did with the Yankees last season, but it would be a major boost to the team’s offense.</p><p>Soto and the Mets enter trade season well on their way to a playoff berth. However, New York is under pressure to make a move before the deadline. After coming within two wins of a World Series appearance last season, the Mets are ready to get over the hump. San Diego Padres president of baseball operations, A.J. Preller, would seem to agree based on his recent comments regarding the 2022 trade that sent<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mets-news-juan-soto-rare-feat-last-done-1987-darryl-strawberry"> former Washington National, Juan Soto</a>, to the Padres.</p><p>Despite the fact that Washinton received coveted young prospects who have had varying levels of major league success, Preller told the Athletic’s Dennis Lin that <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6451579/2025/06/26/san-diego-padres-aj-preller-juan-soto/?source=emp_shared_article" rel="noopener">the trade is a point of pride to this day.</a></p><p>“Honestly,” Preller said Wednesday, “I think in the baseball ops group we look back with a lot of pride and not regret.”</p><p>“You’re hoping that we could trade for Juan Soto with none of those guys in there, but we know that’s not realistic,” Preller said. “We had a team that ended up getting to the NLCS for the third time in franchise history and was three games away from a World Series. And from day one, I’ve talked about playing on the big stage. That’s what it’s about for our franchise, is getting to a World Series and winning a World Series for San Diego.”</p><p>Across 214 games with the Padres, Soto mashed 41 home runs, posted a .405 OBP, and earned an .893 OPS. The Padres fell short of capturing a World Series title, but received consistently competitive play from Soto.</p><p>The Padres traded Soto to the New York Yankees prior to the 2024 season, and Soto’s journey has been well-documented since then.</p><p>As far as the Nationals end of the deal, shortstop C.J. Abrams, left-handed starter MacKenzie Gore, and outfielder James Wood were the core return. They have each started to show signs of real development at the big league level, and have featured flashes of All-Star potential.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/nationals-news-james-wood-sets-mlb-benchmark-blistering-bomb-vs-dodgers">Wood has been particularly good</a> in 2025. Soto has been on fire this month, displaying his prodigious power. The All-Star right fielder <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-mets/mets-news-juan-soto-ties-jimmie-foxx-mlb-record-hr-eruption-phillies">tied Jimmie Foxx for the most multi-homer games</a> before turning 27 with two blasts in an 11-4 win over the Phillies Saturday. In Wednesday’s game against the Atlanta Braves, Soto again hit two home runs, surpassing Foxx for the all-time record with his 27th multi-homer game.</p><p>In addition to adding his name to the MLB record book, Soto’s June run has made Mets <a href="https://x.com/SlangsOnSports/status/1938047789088563284" rel="noopener">franchise history</a>. With his two home runs against the Braves, Soto joined Darryl Strawberry as the only Mets players with 10 home runs and 20 walks in a calendar month, per MLB.com’s Sarah Langs. He slashed .231/.357/.413 with 9 home runs, 27 RBI and 36 runs scored through May 31.</p><p>But when the calendar flipped to June, Soto caught fire. He entered Wednesday’s contest slashing a scorching .315/.485/.685. He now has 10 home runs, 18 RBI and 22 runs scored in 23 games this month.</p><p>In addition to making Mets history with a historic June and surpassing Foxx for multi-homer games before the age of 27, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-mets/mets-news-juan-soto-join-mickey-mantle-mlb-history-vs-braves">Soto also recently joined Mickey Mantle</a> and Mel Ott in an exclusive club. His solo shots in the fourth and seventh innings powered New York to a much-needed win and gave him 27 career multi-homer games, breaking Jimmie Foxx’s record before turning 27. The lefty now sits at 220 career home runs and is well on pace to challenge more historical milestones before his 30th birthday.</p><p>The Mets offense came alive as a whole, totaling 13 hits in the game and going 3-for-6 with runners in scoring position. Soto’s performance helped snap a three-game losing streak and pushed New York to a 47-34 record, reinforcing their position as a legitimate postseason contender.</p><p>Ronny Mauricio added a solo home run in the third inning, while Brett Baty and Brandon Nimmo contributed RBI singles.
