But at the end of the day, what’s going to elevate the Mariners even further is a return to MVP form for center fielder Julio Rodriguez. And on Sunday, Rodriguez was definitely in top form, homering off of Jacob deGrom in the top of the third inning in an eventual 5-4 win for the Mariners over division rival Texas Rangers.</p><p>Rodriguez wasted no time during that fateful at-bat, punishing a hanging slider from deGrom to launch a 391-foot bomb to right-center field — his 20th long ball of the campaign. And in so doing, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-news-julio-rodriguez-stands-tall-with-feat-never-before-done-in-mlb-history">Mariners star made history</a>, establishing himself in an exclusive club that only he is the member of thus far.</p><p>According to Mariners PR on X (formerly Twitter), Rodriguez <a href="https://x.com/MarinersPR/status/1952113370301415473" rel="noopener">became the first-ever player</a> in MLB history to record at least 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in each of his first four seasons. This power and speed combo is rare to find, and even with the Mariners star not being at his best thus far in 2025, him being able to hit this mark regardless is a testament to the raw talent he has.</p><p>From the get-go, Rodriguez has been one of the most valuable contributors in all of MLB, buoying the Mariners to contention. Since Rodriguez became an everyday player in 2022, the Mariners have played above .500 ball, making the postseason in 2022 and barely missing out on the playoffs in 2023 and 2024 despite winning 88 and 85 games, respectively.</p><p>On the year, Rodriguez is <a href="https://www.statmuse.com/mlb/ask?q=julio+rodr%C3%ADguez+2025+ops" rel="noopener">now slashing</a> .252/.308/.435. That remains a far cry from when he was at his best with the Mariners. With the Major League Baseball trade deadline looming, the Mariners made their move. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-news-trade-diamondbacks-josh-naylor">Seattle traded two prospects for Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Josh Naylor</a> on Wednesday.</p><p>The move kicked off the chaos of the trade deadline, giving the Mariners a much-needed boost offensively. Seattle’s front office is happy to have Naylor on their side. Rodriguez agreed when he offered his take on the trade and what it means for him and the rest of the team. To him, Naylor is a big-time addition who can <a href="https://x.com/Mariners/status/1948823417580650533" rel="noopener">help them realize their goals</a> in 2025.</p><p>“What he brings to the table definitely can help the team win and get to where we want to get to,” Rodriguez said.</p><p>While Naylor was one of many Diamondbacks players on the trade market, he was not the biggest name. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-news-how-yankees-ryan-mcmahon-trade-impacts-seattles-eugenio-suarez-pursuit">Seattle remains interested in the availability of Eugenio Suarez</a> as the trade saga surrounding him continues. For now, though, the Mariners can walk away from the MLB trade deadline happy that their issues at first base are behind them.</p><p>Rodriguez is not the player who took the league by storm earlier in his career. Instead, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-news-julio-rodriguez-stands-tall-with-feat-never-before-done-in-mlb-history">Seattle’s franchise centerpiece has quietly become one of baseball’s most reliable All-Stars</a>. Because of that and his growth in maturity, he has become a great leader. He welcomed Naylor to the Mariners when the deal went through along with the franchise.</p><p>Replacing Luke Raley with Naylor drastically changes Seattle’s season outlook. They have plenty of time to track down the Houston Astros in the American League West. Even if they don’t finish first, the Mariners are a dangerous playoff team. No opponent wants to seen Rodriguez, Raleigh, and Naylor in a postseason series.</p><p>Rodriguez is ready to work with Naylor to realize his team’s goals. But the biggest improvement for the Mariners is going to have to come from within. Star center fielder Julio Rodriguez hasn’t quite been at his best in 2025. Even then, Rodriguez has remained a picture of consistency. On Wednesday night, he hit his 15th home run of the season and stole his 20th base in a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-news-randy-arozarena-power-surge-not-seen-since-ken-griffey-jr-29-years-ago">4-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels</a>.</p><p>In so doing, Rodriguez made history. According to Mariners PR on X (formerly Twitter), Rodriguez <a href="https://x.com/MarinersPR/status/1948578428070101316" rel="noopener">became the first player</a> not just in franchise history, but in all of MLB, to record at least 15 home runs and 20 stolen bases for the first four years of one’s career — an outstanding feat.</p><p>While 15 home runs and 20 stolen bases aren’t exactly numbers that would catch anyone’s eye, it’s a testament to Rodriguez’s ability to be a consistently productive player while playing an up-the-middle position that he’s able to produce this feat.</p><p>He’s played in 132, 155, and 143 games in his first three seasons, proving he has incredible durability. And thus far in 2025, he’s only missed one game — a May 22 contest against the Houston Astros that he was absent for due to back tightness that clearly wasn’t very serious, as he hasn’t missed a game since.</p><p>Rodriguez, of course, would want to be <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-news-julio-rodriguez-completes-epic-mlb-feat-last-done-by-1987-barry-bonds">more productive for the Mariners in 2025</a> than he has been thus far. He’s currently slashing just .254/.315/.416 on the year, which would be a personal-worst in all triple-slash categories. Some of it has been due to poor batted-ball luck, but some of it has been due to poor quality of contact as well.</p><p>At least, Rodriguez is showing signs of life in July, as he’s <a href="https://www.statmuse.com/mlb/ask?q=julio+rodr%C3%ADguez+ops+july+1+2025+to+july+24+2025" rel="noopener">posted a .770 OPS</a> thus far on the month. The Mariners will need him to be better, however, if they were to establish themselves as a playoff team.</p><h2><b>Julio Rodriguez looking to return to superstar status for the Mariners</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Seattle-Mariners-center-fielder-Julio-Rodriguez.jpg"><figcaption>Lon Horwedel-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Rodriguez burst onto the scene as a 21-year-old rookie all the way back in 2022, slashing .284/.345/.509 and firmly establishing himself as the league’s greatest young superstars. Rodriguez’s production dipped on a per-game basis in 2023, but he played in nearly all of the 162 games and remained very consistent, finishing top-four in MVP voting in the process.</p><p>However, the Mariners star hasn’t been quite at his best at the plate since. <a href="https://www.statmuse.com/mlb/ask?q=julio+rodr%C3%ADguez+ops+march+1+2024+to+july+24+2025" rel="noopener">Since the start</a> of the 2024 season, Rodriguez has posted an OPS of .734 — a far-cry from where he once was. But he’s only 24 years of age, so he has plenty of time to figure it out.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

This is exactly what Rodriguez did in powering the Mariners to a three-game series sweep over the AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers, with his 2-3 night at the plate with two walks and three runs scored leading Seattle to an 8-4 victory on Sunday in the final game of the set.</p><p>In fact, Rodriguez’s <a href="https://www.statmuse.com/mlb/ask?q=julio+rodr%C3%ADguez+stats+from+july+11+to+13+2025" rel="noopener">heater against</a> the Tigers is not something that many hitters across MLB history have accomplished. The Mariners star center fielder tallied 17 total bases (he went 6-12 from the plate with two doubles and three home runs), four walks, and two stolen bases — stats that only Barry Bonds (in 1987) and Cooperstown inductee Mike Schmidt (in 1975) <a href="https://x.com/OptaSTATS/status/1944596577940627518" rel="noopener">managed to accomplish</a> over the course of a three-game series, as per OptaSTATS on X (formerly Twitter).</p><p>To be in the company of two of the greatest hitters of all-time means that Rodriguez has to be doing something right. The 2025 season has been more challenging than anticipated for him at the plate, but his all-around contributions have been keeping his value steady — and now, his hitting production is catching up to everything he’s doing for the Mariners in all facets of the ball.</p><p>Rodriguez wasted no time making his mark on Sunday, as he scored the Mariners’ first run of the ballgame with a line drive home run to right field off of a low-outside fastball from Tigers pitcher Jack Flaherty. He then <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-aj-hinch-gives-proud-silver-lining-getting-swept-mariners">piled on the Tigers’ misery</a> with a run-scoring double in the ninth, extending their lead beyond the Tigers’ reach.</p><p>This explosive level of play from Rodriguez is exactly what the Mariners need as they continue to chase the Houston Astros in the AL West standings.</p><h2><b>Mariners heat up heading into the All-Star break</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Cal-Raleigh-with-Seattle-Mariners.jpg"><figcaption>Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>On cue, the Mariners’ first series following the All-Star break will be against the Astros, a team that simply won’t give up their stranglehold on the AL West division even after undergoing many changes to their roster heading into 2025.</p><p>Perhaps adding another bullpen piece or two would be helpful for the Mariners, and so would some continued improvement from Rodriguez. But if anything, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-cal-raleigh-joins-reggie-jackson-on-exclusive-list">Seattle will be relying on Cal Raleigh</a> to continue hitting the cover off the baseball, as he already has 38 dingers on the season at the All-Star break — making a 60-home run year a possibility.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
