The left-hander surrendered two home runs — <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/buster-posey-explains-how-giants-offense-can-keep-up-with-dodgers-padres">both to San Francisco Giants’ Jung Hoo Lee</a> — in a 5-4 loss at Yankee Stadium, tying an unfortunate Yankees franchise record in the process.</p><p>Rodón has now allowed 51 home runs in his first 50 appearances for the Yankees, matching J.A. Happ for the most long balls <a href="https://x.com/nyyankeesstats/status/1911497550726594569" rel="noopener">given up in a player’s first 50 games with the club</a>. It’s an alarming stat for a pitcher brought in to anchor the rotation, and it stings even more when the long ball turns a potential win into another frustrating loss.</p><p>“Just a terrible execution on a curveball that he punished,” Rodón said postgame, referring to Lee’s three-run homer that flipped the game in the sixth inning.</p><p>Despite striking out eight and allowing just three hits, Rodón’s two biggest mistakes both ended up in the seats. His first blemish came in the fourth, when Lee hit a solo shot to right-center. On Sunday, the walk preceding Lee’s <a href="https://www.sfchronicle.com/sports/giants/article/giants-take-2-3-yankees-lee-takes-rodon-deep-20273751.php" rel="noopener">second homer proved decisive once again.</a></p><p>“We have the momentum and I just got to be better,” Rodón said. “It’s really frustrating… just missed execution on the curveball and I got punished.”</p><p>Manager Aaron Boone acknowledged the quality of Rodón’s stuff, pointing to his ability to generate swing-and-miss and dominate for stretches. But Boone didn’t shy away from the impact of the three-run homer.</p><p>“It’s that small of a separator between him being in a dominant position and giving up a big swing,” Boone said. “He had presence with everything. But obviously a three-run homer hurt us today.”</p><p>Lee, meanwhile, stole the show. The rookie outfielder not only delivered his first career multi-homer game, but finished the weekend with three home runs — all of them pivotal in San Francisco’s series win. Sunday’s heroics helped the Giants secure their first series victory at Yankee Stadium since interleague play began.</p><p>With the loss, the Yankees fell to 8-7 on the season, and the scrutiny surrounding Rodón’s $162 million contract continues. I’ve thought about it quite a bit and I used a really deep-cut bat. For those out there that don’t know what that means, at the end of the bat, you can either have just a flat, rounded end or you can bore out the end of the bat. The reason I did that was to me it was, like, I want to move the density of the bat more towards the sweet spot because I didn’t want to hit the ball off the end.”</p><p>“The torpedo bat takes it to another level where, from my understanding,” Posey continued about the torpedo bats. “You can kind of customize it to where you most likely hit the ball. The 42-year-old veteran is entering his 21st season in the majors but Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey believes there’s still <a href="https://x.com/JonHeyman/status/1910134385640399225" rel="noopener">gas in the tank</a>.</p><p>“You mention he’s 42. There’s definitely risk in the toll that he’s taken on his body throughout his career. But he told me he felt like he’s in a good place. He was able to connect with [Giants pitching coach] J.P. [Martinez]. Unsurprisingly his work ethic is off the charts. I mean, you don’t have a career like his without just an outstanding work ethic. You talk to Justin and I think he’s going to play for as long as he can. And right now, there’s no signs of slowing down. So, thrilled to have him on the staff,” Posey said, per the New York Post’s Jon Heyman on X.</p><p>“Early on in the conversations I was really just listening to his voice. I was trying to get a feel for his tone to understand if there was truly motivation there. And it was apparent early on to me that there was,” Posey added.</p><h2><b>The Giants need Justin Verlander to return to form</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Justin-Verlander.jpg"><figcaption>Katie Stratman-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>While the former catcher turned executive is convinced Verlander can bring his A game to the Giants, the results so far have been underwhelming. The 2011 American League MVP was looking to rebound from his <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-news-justin-verlander-special-silver-lining-home-debut-dud">home debut dud</a> last week, taking on the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday. However, he gave up six runs, five of which were earned, in 5.2 innings. Verlander allowed five hits and three walks while striking out nine batters.</p><p>So far this season, Verlander has made three starts and he’s still looking for his first win. He has a 6.92 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 16 strikeouts in 13 innings of work.</p><p>Verlander won his third-career Cy Young in 2022 and he was reasonably effective with the Mets and the Astros in 2023. But the grizzled vet showed his first signs of decline last season. In 2024, Verlander went 5-6 with a 5.48 ERA, 1.384 WHIP and 74 strikeouts in 90.1 innings. He finished the year with a career-low ERA+ of 71. However, a shoulder injury sidelined him for two months, limiting him to 17 starts.</p><p>Now with the Giants, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-news-justin-verlander-pursuit-300-win-milestone">Verlander is chasing the 300-win milestone</a>. He’s currently 38 wins shy of the mark with a career record of 262-147. Robles crashed into the netting, flipping over the wall, and landed hard — clearly in pain as he clutched his left shoulder. He was carted off the field moments later, his teammates and trainers rushing to his side. It was a massive rebound for a player whose career had been sidetracked by injuries during his time with the Nationals.</p><p>“He made all that effort,” center fielder Julio Rodríguez said. “But it was at a high cost. I just noticed he was in pain and called the trainers immediately.”</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/giants-news-justin-verlander-special-silver-lining-home-debut-dud">Giants ended up winning on the next pitch</a> — a walk-off single by Wilmer Flores — but it was Robles’ health that lingered long after the final score.</p><p>Giants right fielder Mike Yastrzemski, familiar with the ballpark’s quirky layout, praised the presence of netting where Robles landed. “Who knows what could have happened?” Yastrzemski said. “It’s one of those things where you hope he’s OK. Verlander threw a dud in his home debut this season for the Giants. He was pulled after just 2 plus innings on Friday in a game against the Seattle Mariners.</p><p>There is something that Verlander <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/44536394/justin-verlander-chased-3rd-inning-giants-debut" rel="noopener">will cherish</a> though from his debut.</p><p>“It really was (special) but I would have liked to have done better,” Verlander said, per the Associated Press. “I appreciate the fans cheering me on the way off the field, too.”</p><p>Verlander retired just seven batters in his shaky performance. He allowed three runs and five hits. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/giants-news-willy-adames-hero-epic-giants-home-debut">The Giants actually went on to win the game in 11 innings</a>, 10-9.</p><p>“They just made him work really hard, threw a lot of pitches, so he’ll tell you it wasn’t his best stuff,” Giants manager Bob Melvin said. “He only walked two but they made him throw a ton of pitches. He gave up some hits. At that point in time I wasn’t going to let him throw 40 pitches in an inning. That was going to be it regardless. Kind of for him, move on to the next.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/giants-news-justin-verlander-honest-buster-posey-admission">Verlander signed a one-year deal with the Giants</a> before heading to the Bay this season. I’ve experienced it from the other side obviously in some big moments and know how great these fans are,” Verlander added. “A lot of guys here had told me how special opening day is here for San Francisco. It really was. The atmosphere was wonderful for the short time I was out there.”</p><p>A team’s home opener is always a special day. The Giants had more reasons to celebrate on Friday, though, as the team welcomed several former franchise stars. It was also a day to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the opening of the team’s ballpark.</p><p>“Kind of the timing of it was pretty cool, too,” Melvin added. “(Logan) Webby got the opening day and then Justin gets the home opener. I don’t know if it could have been timed better. I’m sure he’s looking forward to it and I know our fans are looking forward to it. But his shallow pop-up and a subsequent groundout from Jung Hoo Lee squandered the opportunity.</p><p>“I always want the ball hit to me,” Adames said. “Even when they’re trying to kill me.”</p><p>Justin Verlander’s home debut didn’t go as scripted. The 42-year-old lasted just 2⅓ innings, giving up three runs, including a first-inning home run to Rodríguez. He was knocked out in the third after a 13-pitch walk to Cal Raleigh and a game-tying single from Jorge Polanco.</p><p>“It’ll gnaw at me a little bit,” Verlander said. “But this team — they find ways.”</p><p>Indeed, the Giants showcased both chaos and clutch. They made runs at other free agents, notably Alex Bregman, but did not land them. Now they have Tucker as a pending free agent playing on their team. The Athletic interviewed people around the league talking about the Cubs’ cheapness in recent years,<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6251343/2025/04/04/chicago-cubs-payroll-revenue/" rel="noopener"> proven by a lack of deals in recent winters</a>. Giants third baseman Matt Chapman spoke about his contract with the Cubs, and his quotes should make fans concerned.</p><p>“The Cubs had a lot of interest in me,” Chapman said. “They were willing to do a one-year deal with me. There was just no way I could take the Cubs’ one-year deal, just for protection purposes. I was definitely considering it. I thought it would have been a good place to play. I thought they were a good team.</p><p>Chapman continued, “Even if it was two with an opt-out after the first year, I would have really had to take a look at it. But they said with the way their money was, they could only do a one-year. I was just like, ‘That’s just too risky.’”</p><p>The Cubs will have to watch as Chapman plays up to his $151 million contract. Can they fix their problems before Tucker’s negotiations?</p><h2><b>The Cubs must find a way to keep Kyle Tucker</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/yle-Tucker-with-Chicago-Cubs.jpg"><figcaption>Rick Scuteri-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Despite Tucker’s status as the best player in the trade, the Cubs did give up a lot to get him. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/astros-news-prospect-joined-historic-company-making-opening-day-roster">Prospect Cam Smith made the Astros out of camp</a>, Isaac Paredes can be a solid power hitter, and Hayden Wesneski is in their rotation. They have to keep him to make the deal worth it because they will not pivot like the Yankees did after losing Juan Soto.</p><p>While fans worry about the Tucker contract, he is off to a great start for the Cubs. He has four homers and five doubles with 11 RBIs through nine games. Tucker will get a rousing ovation when he helps the Cubbies open Wrigley Field for the 2025 season on Friday.</p><p>But every Cubs fan would tell you that the 2025 team would be better with Chapman or Bregman. Matt Shaw can become a good third baseman, but it is a risky bet in an important season. For a team in such a big city with a massive fan base, they are not spending the money on their roster necessary to compete with the Dodgers. In particular, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-news-heliot-ramos-franchise-home-run-feat-since-pablo-sandoval-2011">outfielder Heliot Ramos is tearing the cover of the baseball</a>, hitting a solo shot on Tuesday in a 3-1 victory over the Houston Astros.</p><p>Ramos, a 25-year-out outfielder who’s just in the second full season of his MLB career, is proving himself to be a long-term keeper piece for the Giants. According to the team’s official account on X (formerly Twitter), Ramos <a href="https://x.com/SFGiants/status/1907245913682112660" rel="noopener">became the first player</a> in Giants franchise history to start a season with an extra-base hit in five straight games since the late great Willie Mays did so in 1971.</p><p>To be mentioned in the same sentence as Mays, one of the greatest to ever hold a baseball bat in the history of humanity, is a remarkable achievement, especially for someone as young as Ramos. Every Giants player would want to emulate <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-dusty-baker-breaks-silence-after-visiting-willie-mays-right-before-death">the impact Mays had on the franchise</a>, and Ramos, even with this mini accomplishment, is on track to do so, which is quite impressive.</p><p>Ramos now has five extra-base hits on the year, and he has hit a dinger in alternating games. The Giants are looking at him to be a reliable source of power production in the coming years, and the 25-year-old certainly met expectations last year when he hit 22 home runs and drove in 72 runs.</p><p>The next point of improvement for Ramos would be to get on base more often; he has not yet drawn a single walk this season. Doing so would allow him to provide more consistent value even when the extra-base hits start to dry up. But the way they’ve played through five games is very promising with regards to their contending hopes.</p><p>Logan Webb is still a reliable hand atop the rotation, and the likes of Justin Verlander, Jordan Hicks, and Robbie Ray were more than able to do their fair share in their first starts of the year. And when their hitters, such as Heliot Ramos, are producing, then there could very well be another 2021-esque campaign in the cards for the Giants.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
