Opt-out clauses in June and July. It’s a minor league deal,” Cotillo wrote on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>Dalbec, a powerful left-handed slugger, has displayed signs of intriguing potential at the big league level. In 2021, Dalbec smashed 25 home runs in 133 games played. He has been unable to replicate his 2021 campaign since, however, and at 29 years old the Red Sox are seemingly content with heading in a different direction.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/red-sox-news-bobby-dalbec-fiery-nsfw-response-ending-slump">Dalbec struggled in 2024</a> while playing in 37 games. He slashed just .133/.217/.193/.410 across 37 games played. He hit only one home run during that span as well. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/red-sox-news-boston-bobby-dalbec-roster-move-surprising-turn-events">Red Sox ultimately designated Dalbec for assignment in September</a>. He was sent to Triple-A after clearing waivers.</p><p>For the White Sox, the acquisition represents a low-risk, high-reward move. Dalbec could realistically become a 30-home run hitter if he plays up to his potential. If Dalbec struggles again, though, then Chicago can move on without too much concern given the minor league contract. If Dalbec makes the big league team, he will reportedly earn $1.25 million.</p><p>The White Sox are fresh off a historically bad 2024 season. Chicago is in the middle of a necessary rebuild as they hope to turn things around within the next few years. They are not close to contending yet, but the White Sox could find themselves playing quality baseball within the next few years if they complete a successful rebuild of the roster.</p><p>There is a chance that Bobby Dalbec could factor into Chicago’s long-term plans if he plays well. With 121 losses, there is almost nowhere to go but up. Their rebuild is underway, signaled by <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/red-sox-news-boston-finalizing-blockbuster-garrett-crochet-trade-white-sox">their trade of Garrett Crochet</a>, but they need to fill out the roster. The White Sox signed Josh Rojas <a href="https://www.mlb.com/whitesox/news/josh-rojas-white-sox-deal" rel="noopener">to a one-year contract</a> in free agency, per MLB.com’s Scott Merkin.</p><p>“The White Sox have agreed to terms with free agent infielder/outfielder Josh Rojas on a one-year-deal, a source told MLB.com on Thursday,” Merkin reported.</p><p>Last year, Rojas was a versatile defender for the Seattle Mariners who struggled at the plate. The White Sox had the worst team batting average in baseball last year and the Mariners were only slightly ahead of them. This will not be the move that sparks their offense, but he should be better in Chicago. Seattle <a href="https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/leaderboard/statcast-park-factors" rel="noopener">is the hardest park</a> to hit in, per Baseball Savant.</p><p>Rojas had his lowest batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage among his four full seasons. While those offensive numbers are putrid, look no further than Teoscar Hernandez for proof that hitting in Seattle is difficult. His OPS+ improved by 29 points from Seattle to Los Angeles. They are not going to spend big money in the offseason, so they are hoping to get something out of Rojas that the Mariners could not. In the Crochet trade, they added four star prospects who could help in the future but that likely won’t come to fruition this year.</p><p>On top of keeping many of their poor players from last year, they traded their best pitcher, could trade their starting center fielder, and have not added anything of impact in free agency. He now writes about sports instead as a form of therapy.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Chicago White Sox</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The Philadelphia Phillies, on New Year’s Day, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-2-players-phillies-unwilling-trade-alec-bohm-talks">pulled off a trade</a> with the Chicago White Sox, sending left-handed relief pitcher Tyler Gilbert to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for minor league hurler Aaron Combs. Gilbert had already been designated for assignment by the Phillies back on December 22, and in the end, Philadelphia <a href="https://x.com/Phillies/status/1874523887373062555" rel="noopener">managed to acquire</a> a 23-year-old right-hander who was drafted in the eighth round of the 2024 MLB Draft.</p><p>The Phillies no longer had a place for Gilbert on the 40-man roster after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/phillies-news-philadelphia-adds-ex-brewers-pitcher-1-year-deal">trading for Jesus Luzardo</a> from the Miami Marlins; it’s not quite clear what role Luzardo is going to play for the Phillies yet in 2025, but as a fellow lefty himself, there is a chance that he could be deployed as a bullpen arm after missing a good chunk of 2024 due to a lumbar injury. Thus, it was for the Phillies’ best to at least get something of value from a 31-year-old reliever who didn’t pitch too often in 2024 anyway.</p><p>Regardless, for a White Sox team starved of talent, taking on Gilbert for the low cost of a lottery ticket in the form of a pitching prospect isn’t too bad of a gambit. The 31-year-old lefty put up an ERA of 3.24 in 2024, although he did pitch in just 8.1 innings and his peripherals were worrying, striking out just 4.32 batters per nine innings. His track record in the strikeout department isn’t the best either, as he has a low strikeout rate even to begin his career in the big leagues.</p><p>The White Sox made room for Gilbert on their 40-man roster by designating infielder Braden Shewmake for assignment. Shewmake had a nightmare 2024 campaign, putting up a ghastly .337 OPS en route to tallying -0.7 WAR in 67 plate appearances.</p><h2><b>Phillies and White Sox continue bid for improvement in 2025</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Bryce-Harper.jpg"><figcaption>Brad Penner-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Improvement looks a lot different <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-big-bryce-harper-move-phillies-make-unlikely">for the Phillies</a> and White Sox heading into 2025. For one, Philadelphia just won the NL East in 2024 and was a force to be reckoned with, especially to begin the year. Alas, they lost a bit of steam in the middle of the season. They’re now looking to bolster their depth to avoid meeting the same fate.</p><p>Meanwhile, any upward motion for the White Sox would be an improvement. He was reportedly a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-3-possible-candidates-for-white-sox-managerial-job">finalist for the White Sox manager job</a> before the organization hired former Texas Rangers associate manager Will Venable.</p><p>A former No. 1 overall MLB Draft pick, Nevin spent more than a decade in the Major Leagues before starting his MLB coaching career in 2017 as first base coach for the San Francisco Giants. He also spent four years as a third base coach for the New York Yankees before heading to Los Angeles, where he became interim manager after the club fired Joe Maddon.</p><p>With Chicago, Nevin will reunite with three members of his Angels coaching staff. Schoolcraft is just 17 and reclassified to be part of this year’s draft class. Also a first baseman, MLB.com calls him “a <a href="https://www.mlb.com/milb/prospects/2025/draft/kruz-schoolcraft-828244" rel="noopener">legitimate two-way</a> standout” who hits 97 with his fastball and has above-average power at the plate.</p><p>Bleacher Report also did a <a href="https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10146626-2025-mlb-mock-draft-for-every-1st-round-pick-after-draft-lottery-results" rel="noopener">mock draft</a> around the time of the lottery announcement, projecting the White Sox to select Auburn catcher Ike Irish. He hit .325 with a .408 on-base percentage in the Cape Cod League this summer, further legitimizing the 1.030 OPS he put up for the Tigers last season. Now the two organizations are collaborating again, agreeing to terms on a slightly less impactful deal.</p><p>Chicago has <a href="https://x.com/CST_soxvan/status/1870621568684200183" rel="noopener">acquired</a> lefty reliever Cam Booser from Boston, per White Sox reporter Daryl Van Schouwen on X. The Red Sox will receive 18-year-old minor leaguer Yhoiker Fajardo in return. In a corresponding move, White Sox’s outfielder Corey Julks was designated for assignment so Booser could be added to the team’s 40-man roster.</p><p>Booser is one of the most interesting players you’ve never heard of. After signing with the Minnesota Twins as an undrafted free agent in 2013, Booser began his professional pitching career in the minors but failed to make it past Single-A ball. As an athlete he endured a broken femur, knee surgery, broken vertebra and labrum surgery before healing up just to be hit by a car that broke his sacrum.</p><p>Still Booser persevered. He returned from the sacrum injury to pitch in High-A but was suspended for 50 games for using cannabis. Ultimately, he decided to take the message and retired in 2017 to work as a carpenter. However, four years later, Booser resurfaced in the independent league. He then got a minor league deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2022, making it all the way to Double-A before the team released him in the middle of the season. He caught on with the Atlantic League and finally signed with the Red Sox in 2023.</p><p>After holding his own with Boston’s Triple-A affiliate, Booser made the 40-man roster in 2024. He then, at long last, made his <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/videos/watch/2654/meet-the-31-year-old-mlb-rookie">major-league debut at the age of 31</a>.</p><h2><b>White Sox land left-handed reliever Cam Booser</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Cam-Booser.jpg"><figcaption>Eric Canha-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>It being Booser, he was sent back to the minors shortly after. But ultimately he was recalled to Boston and stuck in the majors. And he pitched well for the Red Sox, producing a 3.38 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 43 strikeouts in 42.2 innings over 43 appearances in 2024.</p><p>Now, the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rtr02bwgnqA&amp;t=16s" rel="noopener">Frank Grimes</a> of baseball will be rewarded for his absurd perseverance and remarkable success by being shipped off to the Chicago White Sox.</p><p>The 2024 White Sox were the worst team in modern baseball history. Chicago lost a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/worst-mlb-teams-history-white-sox-record-breaking-season">record-breaking 121 games</a>. And that was with Garrett Crochet pitching well for the team. The season was so awful that White Sox’s owner <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/white-sox-news-jerry-reinsdorf-considering-selling-team-121-loss-season">Jerry Reinsdorf is considering selling the team</a>.</p><p>But overcoming Chicago’s historic ineptitude will be a comparably small challenge for Booser given his path to the majors. Perhaps Booser, who will turn 33 in May of his sophomore season, is exactly the pitcher to help turn the White Sox around.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

As Lorenzen navigates free agency, he has a shocking plan to make him a more appealing-option to a few teams.</p><p>Lorenzen and his agent, Ryan Hamill of CAA, are planning to market him as a <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6005197/2024/12/19/michael-lorenzen-two-way-player/" rel="noopener">two-way player</a> as a way to circumvent Major League Baseball’s 13-pitcher roster limit according to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.</p><p>“Hamill, according to sources briefed on his conversations, is talking with such clubs about signing Lorenzen, getting him the necessary plate appearances to qualify for two-way status and then flipping him to a contender that would benefit from carrying him as a 14th pitcher,” Rosenthal wrote.</p><p>“Teams that employ large numbers of platoons might not consider keeping an extra pitcher an advantage,” Rosenthal continued. “But teams with fairly set lineups might welcome the spare arm. The Los Angeles Dodgers will be in that position next season if, as expected, Ohtani resumes pitching. If the Dodgers then traded for a two-way Lorenzen, they could choose from among 15 pitchers. Which would be the most Dodgers thing ever.”</p><p>In order to qualify as a two-way player, Lorenzen would need to pitch 20 innings and appear in 20 games as a position player or designated hitter with at least three plate appearances in each game.</p><h2><b>Why Michael Lorenzen would make sense as a two-way player</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/12-19-24-lorenzen-image.jpeg"><figcaption>© Peter Aiken-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Rosenthal speculates that rebuilding teams like the Miami Marlins or Chicago White Sox would be potential fits for Lorenzen to sign with as a two-way player, as they are not actively trying to compete and have ample opportunities at designated hitter for Lorenzen to meet to necessary threshold to qualify as a two-way player.</p><p>That way, once Lorenzen qualifies as a two-way player, the Marlins, White Sox, or any other team that signs Lorenzen with the intention of giving him at-bats would be able to trade him to a contender where he would not count against the 13-pitcher limit.</p><p>Before the National League adopted the designated hitter in 2022, Lorenzen had shown that he was a very capable hitter. During the 2018 season with the Cincinnati Reds, Lorenzen hit four home runs in 34 plate appearances. Throughout 147 plate appearances in his career, Lorenzen is slashing slugging .429 with seven home runs and 24 RBI.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/royals-news-michael-lorenzen-big-injury-update-playoffs-draw-near">Lorenzen is a quality arm</a> without the added bonus of the potential production at the plate. He will make $1.05 million with another $250,000 available in performance bonuses. Furthermore, Wilson will compete for a spot in the White Sox’s rotation.</p><p>The White Sox sent shockwaves throughout their pitching staff <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/red-sox-news-garrett-crochet-offers-bittersweet-comment-white-sox-trade">when they traded Garrett Crochet</a> to the Boston Red Sox. He held a 4.04 ERA and 82/31 K/BB ratio over 34 appearances. Wilson is looking to switch once again, back into the rotation full-time in 2025.</p><p>For as exciting as Chicago’s young pitching corps might be, they no longer have a safety net without Crochet. Even with the left-hander in the rotation, the White Sox finished their campaign with third-worst ERA in the league at 4.67.</p><p>Bryse Wilson won’t singlehandedly fix the White Sox’s pitching problems. Crochet had been mentioned in trade rumors over the past year before finally getting dealt to Boston. Chicago struggled mightily in 2024 en route to an all-time bad season, and Crochet <a href="https://x.com/scottmerkin/status/1867328015341945117" rel="noopener">addressed</a> the White Sox’s forgettable campaign after the trade was announced.</p><p>“I remember so many games where I would get in the car on the way home and be like, ‘What the f**k just happened?’ The [Travis] Jankowski robbing the home run,” Crochet said via Scott Merkin of MLB.com. “It was like, ‘Dude, what is going on?'”</p><p>Garrett Crochet is referring to a moment that occurred late in the 2024 season. In late August, White Sox slugger Andrew Vaughn hit what appeared to be a walk-off three-run home run against the Texas Rangers. It will be a change for Crochet, but he is ready for the challenge.</p><p>The Red Sox are looking to make further upgrades as well, as they hope to make a 2025 postseason run. They lost a record 121 games in 2024, including losing 21 games in a row. Clearly, this team will have no immediate success and, therefore, is looking to the future. With that in mind, they pulled off the biggest trade of Major League Baseball’s offseason thus far.</p><p>On Wednesday, the White Sox completed a blockbuster trade, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/red-sox-news-boston-finalizing-blockbuster-garrett-crochet-trade-white-sox">sending All-Star pitcher Garrett Crochet to the Boston Red Sox</a> in exchange for four talented prospects.</p><p>Boston sent over highly touted catching prospect Kyle Teel, outfielder Braden Montgomery, infielder Chase Meidroth, and right-hander Wikelman Gonzalez. The White Sox already boasted one of the deeper farm systems behind the plate. The acquisition of Teel strengthens that further.</p><p>But if the White Sox were expecting a player ready to make a large impact immediately in the big leagues, they might be waiting a bit. Teel is the closest to game-ready. He has the tools but not the pedigree and experience.</p><p>If this trade sounds a little familiar, it is because it should. Seven years ago, the White Sox made an eerily similar trade with Boston. They shipped Chris Sale to the Red Sox in exchange for four top prospects.</p><h2><b>White Sox’s Garrett Crochet trade reeks of Chris Sale deal</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Garrett-Crochet-throwing-pitch-for-White-Sox.jpg"><figcaption>© Orlando Ramirez-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>In 2016, the White Sox completed a different blockbuster trade with the Red Sox. They sent their lefty ace, Chris Sale, to Boston. The Red Sox were in win-now mode, and Chicago was looking to rebuild. So, they brought in an elite left starting pitcher at age 28.</p><p>I don’t have to tell you how old Crochet is. I am sure you can guess.</p><p>Of course, Sale helped the Red Sox win the 2018 World Series as their ace. Boston will hope for the same outcome, except this time, it came with even less risk.</p><p>The White Sox did not even acquire <a href="https://www.mlb.com/milb/prospects/redsox" rel="noopener">one of the top three prospects</a> in Boston’s farm system. Those spots are reserved for outfielder Roman Anthony, shortstop Marcelo Mayer, and utility man Kristian Campbell. Teel was the highest-ranked prospect at No. 4.</p><p>At least in the Sale trade, Chicago landed top prospects. But even that did not work out as planned.</p><p>Michael Kopech was the highest-rated prospect back then. He failed miserably as a starting pitcher for the White Sox. They eventually moved him to the bullpen before <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dodgers-grading-cardinals-white-sox-michal-kopech-tommy-edman-trade">trading him to the Los Angeles Dodgers</a> this season. Ironically, Kopech then helped the Dodgers win a World Series as an integral part of their pen.</p><p>The White Sox also acquired Yoan Moncada as part of that deal. He did manage to lead the league in something once: strikeouts in 2018. All jokes aside, Moncada has been an utter disaster in Chicago. He is <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/moncayo01.shtml" rel="noopener">a career .254 hitter</a> and has hit more than 17 home runs once in his eight seasons.</p><p>The other two prospects are not even worth mentioning. In essence, the Red Sox received the most dominant pitcher in the game at the time for peanuts. Far too often in baseball, teams ship off elite players for the promise of prospects emerging. The Pittsburgh Pirates are masters at it. But it rarely works out for that team.</p><p>Now, Crochet is not a Sale, at least not yet. But the talent is undeniable, and he may just be a perennial All-Star. The hope is that at least one of the prospects pops up at some point in the future.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

After missing out on free agents like Blake Snell, Willy Adames, Juan Soto and Max Fried, the Red Sox made a huge splash in the trade market.</p><p>Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow addressed <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2024/12/11/red-sox-to-acquire-white-sox-ace-garrett-crochet-in-trade/76925298007/" rel="noopener">the trade</a> after it was made official on Wednesday per USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.</p><p>“We feel like we got a legitimate No. 1 starter in Garrett,” Breslow said. “Left-handed, ton of swing and miss, massive strikeouts and feel like the best is still in front of him. So we’re excited about what he brings. And obviously, we needed to trade really good players in order to be able to do this.”</p><p>“But that’s the cost right now and we’re very much focused on what we were able to get,” Breslow continued.</p><p>In order to get Crochet, the Red Sox had to give up four prospects headlined by catcher Kyle Teel. The 22-year-old Teel was the Red Sox’s No. 4 prospect and the No. 25 prospect in all of baseball according to MLB Pipeline. Outfielder Braden Montgomery, the Red Sox’s No. 5 prospect and baseball’s No. 54 prospect, infielder Chase Meidroth, the Red Sox’s No. 11 prospect and RHP Wikelman Gonzalez, the Red Sox’s No. 14 prospect were the other players included in the trade.</p><p>Breslow is correct, the cost to acquire Crochet was high. But, it is clear that a package like this is what it takes in order to trade for a young ace.</p><h2><b>Why the Boston Red Sox traded for Garrett Crochet</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/12-11-24-crochet-image.jpeg"><figcaption>© Paul Rutherford-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Despite playing for the historically-bad White Sox, Crochet was still able to put together an impressive 2024 season, his first as a full-time starting pitcher.</p><p>Named an All-Star in 2024, the 25-year-old lefty recorded a 3.58 ERA and had a stunning 12.9 SO/9. With an elite fastball-slider-cutter pitch-mix, Crochet has some of the most un-hittable stuff in all of baseball.</p><p>With two years of team control left before he becomes an un-restricted free agent, the question for the Red Sox will be when, or if, they begin to approach Crochet about a potential extension. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/white-sox-news-garrett-crochet-trade-chris-getz">Crochet made headlines when he said</a> that if he was traded at this year’s deadline, he would not pitch in the postseason unless he had signed an extension.</p><p>The Red Sox still have some holes on their roster, and have the flexibility to continue to pursue trades or spend in free agency.
