The frozen rope got out of the park in a hurry, rocketing into the Angels’ bullpen in left and registering an exit velocity of 106.2 mph.</p><h2><b>Mike Trout warming to DH role with Angels</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Mike-Trout.jpg"><figcaption>David Richard-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Trout now has 13 homers on the season and 391 career bombs, making him just nine short of joining the 400 home run club.</p><p>The 15th-year veteran is looking to get back on track in 2025 after missing significant time with injuries each of the last four seasons. The Angels decided to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-angels/angels-news-mike-trout-gets-real-right-field-debut-spring-training">move Trout to right field</a> this year, hoping that switching from center would help preserve his health.</p><p>While it’s unclear if the position change has had an effect, Trout has already played more games in 2025 than he did in three of the last five seasons. However, he hasn’t escaped injury this year.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-angels/angels-news-los-angeles-mike-trout-10-day-il-bone-bruise">Trout landed on the 10-day IL</a> with a bone bruise at the end of April. The ailment would keep him sidelined for a month but he was able to return at the end of May after missing 27 games.</p><p>When Trout was activated, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-angels/angels-mike-trout-reveals-initial-plan-amid-injury-return">Angels decided to play him at DH</a>. The plan was to keep him out of the field until he was fully healthy. Trout has been the team’s designated hitter in all 26 games since his return.</p><p>Since rejoining the lineup on May 30, Trout is slashing .289/.425/.400. That’s an improvement over his season-long slash line of .231/.345/.447. He has 13 home runs, 31 RBI, 28 runs scored and a 117 OPS+ in 56 games.</p><p>The Angels have played well over the last two weeks. In the midst of it, their manager had to step aside. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-angels/angel-news-ron-washington-sidelined-indefinitely-with-health-issue">Angels will be without manager Ron Washington</a> for the remainder of the season, with Ray Montgomery serving as the interim. Sam Blum of The Athletic<a href="https://x.com/SamBlum3/status/1938712954842816764" rel="noopener"> broke the news</a> on Friday.</p><p>“News: Ron Washington will not return this season, the Angels announced. He’s been out with a medical issue the last week. Ray Montgomery will remain as interim manager,” Blum reported.</p><p>Washington left the Angels on June 20 and has not been back since. Reports say he was not feeling well and consulted with doctors in New York before taking medical leave. Now, he will not return for the rest of the season. While the Angels have been solid with Montgomery running the show, losing your leader is never easy.</p><p>Washington was the manager of the Texas Rangers from 2006-14, taking them to two World Series and losing both. He has spent time with the Oakland Athletics, Atlanta Braves, and New York Mets throughout his career. Washington has one World Series ring as the third base coach with the 2021 Braves.</p><p>Washington could not lead the Halos to the postseason in his first year in Anaheim. As the team takes a step forward in his second season, he has to step away to deal with his health. This is an unfortunate end to a promising season for the 73-year-old manager, but it is not the end of anything for his club.</p><p>The Angels open a series at home against the Washington Nationals on Friday and will be playing with Washington on their minds. Over the last few years, the baseball community has not been able to see one of the best players of all time roam the outfield and smash extra-base hits. In fact, Trout has not played 120 games in a season since 2019. His run from 2012-19 is iconic, but his days in centerfield are over. Now, Trout is playing right field while Jo Adell mans center.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-angels/angels-rumors-trade-deadline-plans-come-with-important-caveat">Los Angeles Angels</a> are 38-40 and are 3rd in the AL West Division. With a healthy Trout, this team could sneak into the playoffs. They need a strong second half, and Trout is aware of it. He is taking his progression slowly and is comfortable contributing at DH until he is <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/mike-trout-return-to-right-field-after-injury-update" rel="noopener">ready to play right field</a>.</p><p>“It’s still a little achy,” Trout said to MLB.com’s Rhett Bollinger. “If I get a couple days where it feels good, I’ll get back out there just to move around a little bit. It’s been better the last week or so.”</p><p>Trout is a baseball guy. Not being a part of the action is not in his blood.</p><p>“I like being engaged,” Trout said. “It’s a little different not having defense on your mind. But I’ve just been trying to stay loose and hit in the cage.”</p><p>Trout can certainly still swing it. On the season, his batting average is very low at just .225. It will increase. He has 12 homers on the season with 28 RBIs and a .769 OPS. He is on pace for the most walks since 2019, but his strikeout numbers are too high with 62 on the season. The right-hander has a few more weeks of just hitting as the DH, and this is the time for him to really get it going offensively.</p><p>The Angels are coming off a win against the Boston Red Sox. The wild card hunt looks a bit better, as they are just two games out of the last spot. Based on this tenuous standing, it would make sense for them to likely cash in on a few of their best trade chips. However, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale on Sunday, that is <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2025/06/22/manny-machado-stats-san-diego-padres-hall-of-fame/84303745007/" rel="noopener">not the current course of action.</a></p><p>“While the Los Angeles Angels certainly have some nice trade chips like left-hander Tyler Anderson, closer Kenley Jansen and infielder Luis Rengifo, they don’t plan to sell at the trade deadline unless they suddenly fall apart,” reported Nightengale on Sunday.</p><p>Based on the wild card standings, that would make sense. Furthermore, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/angels-news-christian-moore-mlb-debut-yankees">the Angels just took three</a> out of four on the road against the New York Yankees. If they defeat the Astros once again Sunday, then another series win will be theirs. To add to this, their manager, Ron Washington, is currently on leave. The motivation to succeed and make a postseason run is something that Los Angeles desperately needs. For their fans’ sake, and for the organization’s sake. So, keeping players like Anderson, Jansen and Rengifo makes sense. Keeping Mike Trout’s bat in the lineup at designated hitter is important, so someone who could allow Wade Jr. to move to a bench role would be a good start.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/editorials/3-angels-who-must-be-on-trade-block-ahead-of-deadline">The Angels could certainly use</a> more help, but adding players on expiring contracts, or perhaps ones who could be promising long-term contributors, should be the focus of general manager Perry Minasian. Manager Ron Washington has been a key reason in holding the Angels together this season and has been a steadying force <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-angels/angels-name-ron-washington-next-manager">since he was hired</a>. However, they will miss him for a few games after the team announced he was dealing with a health concern and would be out for the foreseeable future.</p><p>Angels general manager Perry Minasian announced Washington’s status before the team’s upcoming three-game series against the Houston Astros, an AL West rival. Minasian and the Angels did not specify what symptoms Washington was experiencing, but <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45553388/angels-ron-washington-indefinitely-due-health-matter">he was at least able to address the team in the clubhouse</a> before the team announced the news to the public.</p><p>At media availability, Minasian explained what was going on with Washington even more: “Wash has not felt great the last couple of days,” Minasian said. “We want to ensure he’s 100% before he’s back in the dugout and managing. How long it’s going to take, I don’t know. I don’t expect it to be too long.</p><p>“We all know how important this is for all of us, but health is more important than anything, and I’m not letting him back in the dugout until I know he’s 100% OK. I love the guy too much.”</p><p>Washington experienced health issues in their most recent series against the New York Yankees. The 73-year-old experienced shortness of breath and appeared fatigued toward the end of that series. Yankees doctors cleared him to fly home with the team Thursday night, and he underwent a series of medical tests on Friday.</p><p>Washington returned to being a general manager before the 2024 season with the Angels after most notably managing the Texas Rangers to back-to-back World Series appearances in 2010 and 2011. The wheels came off in Washington’s first season, with the Angels losing a franchise-record 99 games. However, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-angels/angels-news-ron-washington-failure-narrative-ugly-campaign">he was adamant that things would turn around</a>, and so far he’s not wrong.</p><p>The Angels enter their series against the Houston Astros on Friday, 6 1/2 games behind for the lead in the AL West. Their improvement has been on full display, with them having a league-best .714 winning percentage in one-run games, which equates to a 15-6 record and a 5-0 record in extra innings.</p><p>The Angels will not move fast in Washington’s recovery, and he will return when ready. The Angels are in a situation where a full-scale rebuild is likely, and might require them to put players on the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/what-a-perfect-angels-trade-deadline-looks-like">trade block ahead of the MLB trade deadline</a>.</p><p>The Halos have many <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/los-angeles-angels/contracts" rel="noopener">players who will become free agents</a> at the end of the season. Thus, they will have to make some decisions. The Angels might benefit from trading some players away. If they are not going to contend for a playoff spot, then trading off assets for future picks will be more effective.</p><p>With the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-angels/angels-news-christian-moore-mlb-debut-yankees">youth movement in Anaheim</a> already underway, there appears to be a new attitude among the Angels. But for the Angels to ever be competitive again, they may have to shed some contracts. So far, it’s been mixed results for the veteran starter.</p><p>Anderson is 18-21 with a 4.04 ERA in his two-plus seasons with the Angels. While he has been a steady middle-of-the-rotation guy for the Halos, he does not figure to be in the team’s long-term plans. Anderson will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. Therefore, the prudent thing for the Angels to do would be to send Anderson to a contender who might utilize him for the postseason run.</p><p>The Cleveland Guardians could be an ideal trading partner. Significantly, the Halos could get a top 25 prospect plus a reserve infielder in exchange for Anderson. Now, there is a possibility it might happen again. When they signed Kenley Jansen to a one-year contract, there was always the possibility they might flip him at the trade deadline.</p><p>Putting Jansen on the trade block is ideal because he is still valuable, and could help a contender in need of bullpen arms in the playoff race. Additionally, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-angels/angels-news-2-la-players-make-history-in-5-4-win-over-mariners">he recently accomplished a career milestone,</a> showing that he can still produce results as a late-inning reliever. Jansen is 37 years old and is unlikely to be part of the Halos’ plans. Despite the Angels’ struggles, Jansen has done well when called upon, notching 14 saves.</p><p>If the Angels are serious about becoming a contender down the line, they must trade Jensen. The Philadelphia Phillies are a team that is in dire need of a closer who can shut the door, as they lead the league with 13 blown saves. Also, Jordan Romano has not been good for them, going 0-3 with a 6.84 ERA with eight saves versus two blown saves. For Jansen, Halos could get a high-level prospect reliever from the minor leagues, plus a lower-tier prospect. Then, both prospects can make significant strides and help the Angels get back to contention within a few years.</p><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/3-early-Los-Angeles-Dodgers-trade-targets-ahead-of-2025-deadline.jpg"><figcaption>Gary A. It might be the season where the Angels finally make a move and send Ward to another team. So far, he is batting .211 with 18 home runs, 49 RBIs, and 38 runs.</p><p>Ward’s batting average is low, but the power tells a different story. According to Baseball Savant, Ward’s barrel percentage is in the <a href="https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/taylor-ward-621493?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb" rel="noopener">85th percentile</a>, which is good. His chase percentage is in the 88th percentile. While there has been some inconsistency, he has demonstrated that he can crack the barrel of the bat and be an impact hitter. If Ward continues his pace, he has a legitimate shot at smacking over 30 home runs and over 90 RBIs, which would be a career high. As a result, his value is higher than ever.</p><p>The Angels could logically shoot for a top-100 prospect, mid-round prospects, and a lower-tier MLB player. A team like the Kansas City Royals might be interested at the MLB trade deadline, as they are looking for a corner outfielder. The Toronto Blue Jays might also be a trade partner, as they are actively contending for a playoff spot and sorely lacking outfielders.
