Vibes have been high as the Athletics played their final games in the Oakland Coliseum, taking two of three games against the Texas Rangers. They’re behind 4-6 in the season series against Seattle, so a sweep here could earn them bragging rights over their divisional rivals. Despite their record, the Athletics hit for a better team average (.234) and have recorded more hits (1245) than their opponents. It’ll take a solid day from the plate to keep up with the high-scoring Mariners.</p><p>The Athletics will send Joey Estes to the mound for start twenty-four. With just a 7-9 overall record, most of his success has come at home where he posts a respectable 3.26 ERA and 4-3 record. His numbers on the road, however, take a serious dip at a 7.03 ERA and .309 OBA. The Mariners are currently hot from the plate, so Estes will have to remain in control and not let this game get out of hand by putting runners on the bags. On the road, they can’t like their chances for a comeback effort.</p><h2><b>Why The Mariners Will Cover The Spread/Win</b></h2><p>The Seattle Mariners will fail to make the Postseason for the second-straight year and they weren’t able to reach previous years’ mark of 90 wins. They just recently fell out of Wild Card contention, falling behind the Minnesota Twins. Still, they finished second in a rather open AL West race, so they’ll have something to build off of in the upcoming offseason. Julio Rodriguez is once again finishing the season at the club’s top hitter, but they’ll be looking to add more pieces around him when they look to rebuild the roster through free agency and the draft. Their pitching saw a begin decline from previous seasons and they’ll be looking to add reinforcements to the bullpen as well.</p><p>The Mariners will send Emerson Hancock to the mound for his fifteenth start of the season. His team has notched wins in his last two starts despite him giving up five runs through 10 innings of work. He’s not typically one to post high strikeout numbers and he’s more of a ground ball pitcher, but the Mariners have a solid defense behind him and can make plays to force the outs. They’ve won two-straight games heading into this one and while their pitching staff has been thin to end the season, they were able to shut the A’s out in the opening game of this series. Expect their recent momentum to keep rolling in this one.</p><h2><b>Final Athletics-Mariners Prediction &amp; Pick</b></h2><p>The Athletics and Mariners will meet again following Seattle’s most recent 2-0 win. Wins have been hard to come by for the Athletics this season, but they’ve done a great job in improving from last year’s forgettable mark and giving fans something to cheer for during this season. JJ Bleday was the star of the game with a go-ahead RBI single and a miraculous catch in center field at key points of the game. Their spirits are high at the moment and they’ll be looking to carry that same momentum into this final series.</p><p>The Athletics will send JP Sears to the mound for his thirty-second start of the season. The Athletics have notched wins in two of his last five starts, but he’s hoping to break this current two-game losing streak he’s been on. He’s allowed 10 runs over his last two starts, but he’s also managed 10 strikeouts in the same breath and can turn in a promising start here if he doesn’t let the Mariners offense get out in front of him. Expect him to take this start deep into the game as he hopes to finish his season on a high note.</p><h2><b>Why The Mariners Will Cover The Spread/Win</b></h2><p>The Seattle Mariners are currently three games out of the final AL Wild Card spot and they’ll look for another series win against a divisional opponent to end the season on a positive note. They’ve won five of their last seven games including taking two of three from the Houston Astros during their most recent series. Braden grew up an Athletics fan in nearby Stockton, California, about an hour and a half from the Oakland Coliseum. Fisher has been notorious for his low payrolls and cost cutting, and this move is just what many believe to be the latest example of him prioritizing his bottom line over anything else.</p><p>Since the move was announced, Athletics fans have participated in a variety of protests to try and show their support for the team and to convince Fisher to keep the team in Oakland. The Athletics (69-90) have a chance to win more than 20 games than they did last season, providing the city with some solace and hope before they transition to their new and likely temporary home in 2025.</p><p>Mark Kotsay played in Oakland for four seasons and has been the team’s manager since 2022. His affinity for the Oakland Coliseum runs deep. He knows the misery that this departure is leaving in its wake and can only do his best to make sure that the fans are recognized for their loyalty and passion.</p><p>They have put up with a lot over the years, but many continued to embrace the Athletics as a key part of the city’s identity even when attendance rates indicated otherwise. The city has experienced four World Series celebrations and countless other memories for more than half a century. Saying goodbye is understandably painful.</p><p>That feeling clearly extends to Kotsay and the ballclub as well, though. The game was played before a packed house of A’s fans, many of whom had signs and placards urging owner John Fisher to sell the team.</p><p>The team is planning to move permanently to Las Vegas, but a new stadium in that city will not be ready until the 2028 or 2029 season. As a result, the team is planning to play in Sacramento until their permanent home is ready. The stadium in that California city is a minor league facility, and critics of Fisher have bashed the owner for multiple aspects of the move.</p><p>Long-time fans are unhappy that the A’s are leaving Oakland and they are also angry that the team will not be playing in a major league facility in the next few years. There are also details of the new stadium in Las Vegas that have not been finalized at this point.</p><p>Major league insider Jeff Passan voiced his issues with the team’s decision to leave Oakland with a statement on X.</p><p>“The Oakland A’s were killed by greed,” <a href="https://x.com/JeffPassan/status/1839434404843966845">Passan said</a>. “Do not allow the people responsible for this to spin it any other way. John Fisher did not have to move this team. Major League Baseball and its owners did not need to be complicit in it. This was a choice. A wrong one. Fans chanted “Sell the team” throughout the game and mixed those chants with “Let’s go Oakland” as the game progressed.</p><p>The team left Kansas City after the 1967 season and relocated to Oakland for the 1968 season. They shared the Oakland Coliseum with the Oakland Raiders for years before the Raiders left first for Los Angeles and then later returned to Oakland. The Raiders played their final season in Oakland in 2019 before moving to Las Vegas.</p><p>Fisher has made public statements saying that he and the A’s ownership group had tried to come up with a permanent stadium in Oakland for years without success. Thankfully, the fans were treated to a win with the A’s beating the Texas Rangers 3-2. The Athletics played at the Coliseum from 1968 to 2024, a long, long time. The stadium opened in 1966 as the home of the Oakland Raiders, and two years later, it started hosting A’s games.</p><p>There was no shortage of history there, too. Despite the lack of fans and rundown facilities in the past years, once upon a time, the Coliseum was a hit. Oakland made three World Series appearances between 1967 and 1976 with the A’s winning it all in back-to-back-to-back years in ’72, ’73, and ’74.</p><p>It’s extremely sad that the city of Oakland has now lost both of its major sports teams to Vegas. A’s fans and Raiders fans were known as some of the most loyal in all of sports, and now they have to watch from afar. The Athletics improved to 68-90 with Thursday’s victory and will begin a three-game set with the Seattle Mariners on Friday to finish out the regular season.</p><p>So long to the Oakland Coliseum. However, the fans’ frustrations at the team leaving Oakland boiled over as a fan stole a stadium seat, leading to a chase with six security guards. Likewise, it was just one instance of fans stealing seats from the Coliseum partly to protest the Athletics leaving the city and to grab souvenirs.</p><p>“Six security guards chasing a man with a stolen stadium seat outside the Oakland Coliseum,” MLB columnist Bob Nightengale <a href="https://x.com/BNightengale/status/1839148143348199883" rel="noopener">reported</a> on X, formerly Twitter.</p><h2><b>Fans steal seats at Oakland Athletics final home game vs. Rangers</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/The-Oakland-Athletics-on-deck-circle.jpg"><figcaption>© Kelley L Cox-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The A’s leaving the city will end a 57-year history that saw the Athletics winning four World Series (in Oakland) and making 21 postseason appearances. On the other extreme, the team also became one of the league’s laughingstocks, with 19 losing seasons of over 100 losses.</p><p>Moreover, their departure will make them the first MLB franchise to relocate four different times, though their nearly three-decade stay in Oakland is their longest.</p><p>Fans blame billionaire owner John Fisher, an heir of the founders of The Gap, who <a href="https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/east-bay/oakland-athletics-departure/3662056/?os=vbkn42tqhoPnxGo4IJ&amp;ref=app" rel="noopener">started the process of relocation</a> within only a few years of the team adopting the motto “Rooted in Oakland.”</p><p>However, since buying the team for $180 million in 2006, Fisher has been looking to replace the storied Oakland Coliseum, which has stood since the 1960s.</p><p>The team leaving their home stadium obviously didn’t sit well with longtime A’s fans, which could explain why they decided to steal seats from the stadium.</p><p>Besides, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/athletics-news-fans-rip-john-fisher-statement-final-game-oakland-coliseum">A’s fans also blasted Fisher’s apology</a> for taking the team away. Even Green Day vocalist <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/athletics-news-fans-rip-john-fisher-statement-final-game-oakland-coliseum">Billie Joe Armstrong gave Fisher</a> a piece of his mind.</p><p>Additionally, California Bay Area anchor <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/athletics-news-fans-rip-john-fisher-statement-final-game-oakland-coliseum">Larry Beil harangued Fisher on live TV</a> while literally ripping apart his apology statement.</p><p>After all, the Coliseum has seen three of the MLB’s 24 perfect games ever thrown, and it’s also where <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rickey-hendersons-net-worth-in-2022">Rickey Henderson</a> set the record for career stolen bases. Additionally, the Athletics have won four World Series there–only the New York Yankees have won more championships, with seven, since 1968.</p><p>Now, though, the team will take all that history and fellowship with the fans to Las Vegas, where the NFL’s Oakland Raiders also relocated.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
