However, there is one way management can appease its legions of loyal yet anxious supporters in the event that Bregman lands elsewhere: add a big bat. If ownership wants to make a splash, two sluggers <a href="https://www.masslive.com/redsox/2025/10/red-sox-roster-big-trade-jarren-duran-free-agent-signing-kyle-schwarber-could-alter-outfielddh-mix.html" rel="noopener">jump out as logical targets</a>.</p><p>Kyle Schwarber and Pete Alonso each mean a great deal to their respective franchises and fan bases, but under the right circumstances, the Red Sox could potentially scoop one of them off the open market this winter. MassLive.com reporter Chris Cotillo can see a scenario in which Boston moves on from designated hitter Masataka Yoshida and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/the-perfect-130m-contract-red-sox-must-offer-kyle-schwarber-to-steal-him-from-phillies">fills the void</a> with either Schwarber or Alonso.</p><p>Pursuing those veterans would be mighty costly, to be clear, but it could bring the team closer to another World Series championship.</p><p>“{Manager Alex Cora} has been clear about his admiration for Schwarber, who the Red Sox love, and if a quick reunion with the Phillies doesn’t come together, expect Boston to show some real interest there,” Cotillo writes. “Doing so might force the club to spend something close to $50 million — yes, you read that right — on its DH spot between a Schwarber average annual value around $30 million and Yoshida’s sunk cost at $18 million.</p><p>“That, however, is what big-market, win-now teams do. Alonso fits the club as a DH much better than he does as a first baseman, where his defense is more than suspect.”</p><h2><b>Should Red Sox go all in on Schwarber or Alonso?</b></h2><p>Kyle Schwarber is expected to finish second in MVP voting after recording an National League-best 56 home runs and MLB-best 132 RBIs this season. Besides what the Philadelphia Phillies star has accomplished at the plate, there is also built-in rapport with the Sox. He helped Boston advance to the playoffs after joining the team ahead of the 2021 trade deadline, slashing .291/.435/.522/.957 in 41 regular season games.</p><p>The 32-year-old left-handed hitter remains a homer-heavy, low-batting-average guy who will enjoy glorious highs and rough lows over the course of a campaign. There are risks, but Schwarber can add a power boost that the squad was lacking after sending Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in June.</p><p>Pete Alonso can also provide that service. The New York Mets’ all-time home run leader is fairly consistent from a slugging perspective and rarely misses time due to injury. Furthermore, he is coming off a stellar campaign in which he hit .272 with 38 dingers, 126 RBIs and 41 doubles. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-mets/mets-rumors-what-pete-alonso-is-seeking-amid-looming-mlb-free-agency-decision">The Polar Bear may want more years</a> than Boston brass is willing to commit to him in a potential contract, however.</p><p>There is another key factor that could complicate a possible union with either Schwarber or Alonso. Despite <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-rumors-insider-hints-at-jarren-duran-trade-but-hes-confused-why">ongoing trade rumors</a>, the Red Sox could decide to retain homegrown talent Jarren Duran and move him into the DH slot for the foreseeable future. Such a development would make it less practical to sign one of the aforementioned defensively-limited free agents.</p><p>Fans should brace themselves for both big additions and subtractions this offseason. Rookie Roman Anthony was demonstrating his superstar potential until early September when he suffered an oblique injury that forced him to miss the final weeks of the season as well as the Wild Card series against the New York Yankees.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-alex-bregman-free-agent-mindset">If the Red Sox</a> had remained injury-free they might have advanced out of the Wild Card round, but they didn’t and the lack of overall talent cost them dearly. The Red Sox simply did not have the hitting — especially when it comes to power — to defeat the best teams in the American League.</p><p>The Red Sox face a challenging offseason if they want to continue to get there. Alex Bregman was a sharp free agent add last season, but he has opted out of his 3-year, $120 million contract. The Red Sox may return to the battle and attempt to bring back the star 3rd baseman. Even if they bring him back, that won’t be enough to get them over the top in the American League.</p><p>They need to reach back into their recent past and bring back one of the game’s great sluggers. Kyle Schwarber of the Philadelphia Phillies will be a free agent after the World Series. He would be a sensational designated hitter for manager Alex Cora.</p><p>Schwarber will attract attention from several teams and the Phillies will want to retain him. He is coming off a monster year that saw him play in all 162 games with the Phillies. He blasted <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/PHI/2025.shtml">56 home runs</a> and drove in 132 runs while slashing .240/.365/.563. Schwarber does strike out a lot — he fanned 197 times — but he also walked 108 times.</p><h2><b>Schwarber has proven himself time after time</b></h2><p>There’s certainly a lot more to the 32-year-old slugger than one great season. He has been on a roll for the last four years. He blasted 46 home runs for the Phillies in 2022, his first year with the team. Since then he has had seasons with 47 homers in 2023 and he followed that with 38 long balls in 2024. He has driven in more than 100 runs in each of the last three seasons.</p><p>Prior to joining the Phillies, he played the first six years of his career with Chicago Cubs. He played a key role in their 2016 World Series victory over the Cleveland Indians (now Guardians). After that, he split the 2021 season between the Washington Nationals and Red Sox. He played just 41 games with Boston, but he was a perfect fit for the team.</p><p>He was loved by the fan base and his teammates.</p><p>The 5-11, 230-pound slugger  slashed .291/.435/.522 in his brief time with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-brutal-connelly-early-game-3-stat-shows-defense-did-him-dirty">the Red Sox</a> and hit 7 home runs and knocked in 18 runs. Schwarber enjoyed playing at Fenway Park.</p><p>Schwarber has clearly proven quite a bit with the Phillies and he has shown he is one of the game’s greatest sluggers along with Shohei Ohtani, Aaron Judge and Cal Raleigh. He deserves perhaps the best contract any designated hitter has ever received. The Red Sox would be wise to do everything they could to sign him. He could fill the same role that J.D. Martinez did for the team when they won their last World Series title in 2018.</p><h2><b>Multiple teams are likely to pursue Schwarber</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/If-the-Red-Sox-are-going-to-sign-Kyle-Schwarber-John-Henry-will-have-to-approve-the-deal.jpg"><figcaption>Photo Credit: Chris Tilley-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Phillies are first and foremost on that list. There’s little doubt they want to bring him back and he clearly loves hitting in Citizens Bank Park. It will not be easy for the Red Sox or any other team to pry him away.</p><p>It seems likely that the Cubs could once again be in the market for their former star. They had a solid year in making the playoffs and defeating the San Diego Padres in the Wild Card round, but they could have used Schwarber’s power in the National League Division Series against the Milwaukee Brewers. They lost that series in five games.</p><p>The Brewers had a brilliant regular season but they are on the verge of getting eliminated by the Dodgers in NLCS. They could use a star power hitter like Schwarber but it seems unlikely that they will give him the kind of contract that would entice him to sign with the team</p><p>The likely going rate is $120 million for a four-year deal. That kind of contract is likely to get Schwarber’s attention.</p><p>The Phillies know that and would likely meet that price. The Red Sox know they have to better that price. Owner John Henry would likely have to pony up a four-year, $130 million offer.</p><p>Those that follow the Red Sox know that Henry would not enjoy paying out on that kind of contract. Now, Philadelphia joins teams like the Detroit Tigers, Cincinnati Reds, and Kansas City Royals searching for upgrades.</p><p>While the Phillies will be in the market for some big names in the free agency market, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/philadelphia-phillies/phillies-news-emotional-kyle-schwarber-sounds-off-on-looming-mlb-free-agency">Philadelphia’s top priority needs to be securing who they already have</a>. Both Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto were key pieces of the Phillies’ roster that are nearly impossible replace if the Phillies cannot bring them back. If either makes it to the open market, they will have many suitors.</p><p>Schwarber struggled throughout the NLDS, failing to figure out the pitchers Dodgers manager Dave Roberts used against him. When it comes to power hitters in Major League Baseball, Schwarber is right there with Shohei Ohtani, Aaron Judge, and Cal Raleigh.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/philadelphia-phillies/phillies-news-bryce-harper-kyle-schwarber-jt-realmuto-return">Bryce Harper wants both stars to stay with the Phillies this offseason</a>. Despite his desires, that is much easier said than done. Each of them will be looking for a big payday this winter and both deserve lucrative multi-year contracts. The question is whether or not Philadelphia is willing to pay the amount it will take to keep Schwarber and Realmuto in Phillies jerseys next season.</p><p>If Schwarber wants to hear out other teams as a free agent, plenty of squads will want to have a conversation with him. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/kansas-city-royals/royals-news-bobby-witt-jr-accomplishes-impressive-feat-with-stolen-base-vs-rangers">Royals infielder etched his name into the MLB record books</a> with a dominant finish to the season.</p><p>While its stars shone all year, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/kansas-city-royals/royals-fatal-flaw-that-will-doom-2025-postseason-hopes">Kansas City struggled to find production outside of its main offensive trio</a>. Jac Caglianone should take a step forward next season, but the Royals need another big bat to reach the next level. Schwarber is a perfect fit, bringing an aggressive mindset to a team that desperately needs it. Despite Kansas City’s market size, it could be a big spender this winter.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/kansas-city-royals/mlb-rumors-royals-seth-lugo-trade-strategy-could-lead-to-red-soxs-jarren-duran">Royals wanted to bring in an outfielder</a> to complement Witt Jr. in the batting order at the trade deadline. However, the players they brought in did not provide enough of a spark. However, Elly De La Cruz and Co. realized just how much they have to improve in order to contend with the heavy hitters in the NL. Schwarber could be their key to success.</p><p>Throughout his 2025 campaign with the Phillies, Schwarber slashed <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/stats/_/id/33712/kyle-schwarber" rel="noopener">.240/.365/.563</a>. He got a lot of MVP consideration because of his 56 home runs, but he was an all-around offensive threat. If the Reds brought him in, he and De La Cruz would be one of the best one-two punches in MLB. However, it would require a major offer to take him away from the Phillies this winter.</p><p>Cincinnati is one of many teams in the NL trying to compete with Los Angeles’ expensive roster. While the Milwaukee Brewers showed that teams can have success without paying too much, star power still reins supreme in the baseball world. Adding Schwarber to Cincinnati’s roster puts them on the same level as the league’s elite offenses, even if it breaks the bank.</p><h2>Detroit Tigers</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Tarik-Skubal3.jpg"><figcaption>Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-insider-asks-fans-tarik-skubal-trade-question-detroits-playoff-elimination">Tigers’ top priority this offseason is re-signing Tarik Skubal</a>. However, Detroit manager AJ Hinch has a lot to work on after a brutal ALDS loss to the Seattle Mariners. The team’s offense was great, but lacked the consistency that it takes to make a deep postseason run. Adding Schwarber at DH gives Hinch a massive weapon he can put near the top of his batting order.</p><p>During the 2024 offseason, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-gleyber-torres-signing-detroit-spurning-nationals">Tigers brought in Gleyber Torres</a>. The former New York Yankees infielder put together an All-Star caliber season, keeping Detroit near the top of the standings throughout the season. However, there was a lack of power behind him that left him stranded on base far too many times. Having Schwarber behind him gives Hinch another true offensive threat.</p><p>The Phillies need to be aggressive in order to stay within the inner circle of World Series contenders. However, keeping Realmuto and Schwarber is a tall task. The latter is one of the biggest free agents that could dominate on the open market. Although <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/philadelphia-phillies/phillies-news-jt-realmuto-free-agency-question-postseason">Realmuto did not have much interest in discussing the situation</a>, Harper made it clear that he would love for <a href="https://x.com/OnPattison/status/1976508173193445418" rel="noopener">both players to return</a>.</p><p>“Obviously JT is one of the best catchers in baseball. The guys love pitching to him, they love throwing to him,” Harper told reporters, via On Pattison. “He calls a great game. Had a great year this year, had a great postseason. Schwarbs (Schwarber) obviously, one of our team leaders, a cornerstone of this organization.</p><p>“I don’t know, I’m not really sure what happens or what goes into this offseason, or where we kind of go from here… Obviously those two guys are going to be a main decision for us, a main conversation for us as a team and as a club. This is a ball club that could look quite different next season. Although Philadelphia has found consistent regular season success over the past few years, the Phillies have been unable to earn a championship during that span. In fact, Philadelphia has not won a World Series since 2008.</p><p>The Phillies have built the team around Bryce Harper. Harper’s decision to say he wants Schwarber and Realmuto back could be strategic, as the front office will surely take notice.</p><p>Of course, re-signing both stars will be a challenge. Realmuto is one of baseball’s better catchers and Schwarber emerged as an MVP candidate this season.
