The win helps Red Sox manager Alex Cora keep up in the American League East. Despite Boston’s offense, Lucas Giolito might have been the MVP of the game. He pitched nearly eight innings and only gave up one run. While <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-garrett-crochet-paul-skenes-pitching-dominance">Garrett Crochet continues to dominate for the Red Sox</a>, Giolito is coming along nicely.</p><p>Giolito got a late start to the season, making his Boston debut at the end of April. After an up-and down month in May, the nine-year pro returned to his former glory in June. He kept the momentum going on Friday, securing his fifth win of the season. At 5-1, Giolito’s record is the best on the team. Crochet is close, but his 8-4 record gives him a lower winning percentage.</p><p>After Giolito missed time with injury, Cora and the rest of the Red Sox’s coaching staff wondered about him. What kind of production could be give <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-lucas-giolito-exits-spring-training-debut-injury">Boston after hamstring and elbow strains</a>? Would be good enough to be the No. 2 starter behind Crochet?</p><p>While those questions were warranted, Giolito’s recent tear has silenced his doubters. He spoke with MLB.com’s Chris Costillo about his performance and said he is <a href="https://www.masslive.com/redsox/2025/07/red-sox-starter-dominates-again-as-long-road-leads-him-back-to-where-mlb-career-began.html" rel="noopener">optimistic about where he is</a> as a pitcher. However, he is not going to rest on his laurels after Friday’s start.</p><p>“Continuing to make good progress and staying consistent,” Giolito said. “That has been my goal, pretty much my whole career. Too much lack of consistency so it’s good to be in that spot. I just want to keep it going.”</p><p>Cora agrees, saying that his pitcher wanted to keep going into the eighth inning.</p><p>“He didn’t want to come out, so I appreciate that,” Cora said. “He’s a competitor. After pitching seven shutout innings, Lucas Giolito earned his fourth win of the season. However, he gave most of the credit for the win to Boston’s offense, especially Roman Anthony. The rookie outfielder has struggled since <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-boston-calls-top-prospect-roman-anthony">Alex Cora called him up to the major leagues</a>. On Saturday, he played a great game.</p><p>Anthony entered the game with a batting average of .128. After having so much excitement around him when the Red Sox called him up, Boston’s top prospect fell short of expectations. He took advantage of Toronto’s shaky pitching on Saturday though, going 3-for-6 and scoring two runs in the game.</p><p>While talking with reporters after the game, Giolito gave the 21-year-old props for his performance, according to Mass Live’s Chris Costello. In his opinion, Anthony <a href="https://x.com/ChrisCotillo/status/1939120327650316473" rel="noopener">has worked hard</a> to overcome a slow start to his Major League Baseball career.</p><p>“He’s probably one of the most mature 21-year-old pro baseball players I’ve ever played with,” Giolito said. “Really good head on his shoulders, very even-keeled. I know up to this point he hasn’t been getting those counting stat results that he’s wanted. But he has been showing a ton of promise, really good at-bats. It’s good to see him do that today.”</p><p>After <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-rafael-devers-blockbuster-red-sox-trade">Cora and the Red Sox traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants</a>, the pressure on Anthony increased. With the face of Boston’s franchise off the team, fans are searching for a new player to get behind. They hope that the trio of Anthony, Kristian Campbell, and Marcelo Mayer can help lead the team into the future.</p><p>While the Red Sox are still under .500, Saturday’s win snapped a six-game losing streak. Cora’s team is only two games out of the last American League Wild Card spot at the halfway point in the season.</p><p>With the trade deadline looming, the pressure is on Cora and the front office to keep the team competitive. Devers’ Boston exit wasn’t pretty, but the Red Sox have started to put it behind them. Third baseman Alex Bregman will return to Boston’s lineup soon, hopefully giving them the offensive kick-start they need.</p><p>If Anthony can ride the momentum of Saturday’s performance into future games, the future is bright. The rookie is just getting started in MLB. Following the game, Lucas Giolito, who had a solid start, <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/rafael-devers-wilyer-abreu-s-homers-back-lucas-giolito-s-strong-start" rel="noopener">praised Devers.</a></p><p>Via MLB.com:</p><p>“I’m glad he’s on my team and I don’t have to pitch to him anymore,” Giolito said of Devers. “He’s an incredible hitter and we’re very lucky to have him.”</p><p>Red Sox skipper Alex Cora also said Devers is the best DH in the AL at the moment:</p><p>“If you look at the numbers, he’s probably the best DH in the American League right now,” Cora said of Devers.</p><p>Devers was adamant about not losing his spot at third base this past offseason, but Boston was clear on Bregman playing the position instead. John Henry flew to KC on Friday to meet with Devers about playing first after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/red-sox-news-triston-casas-il-knee-injury">Triston Casas suffered a season-ending injury</a>. Devers said Thursday he has no interest in doing so.</p><p>It’s an interesting stance, but the reality is Devers is far too important to the Red Sox offensively to make a stink about it. He’s been their DH for every game in 2025. Devers claims Boston isn’t “keeping their word”:</p><p>“I was told he was going to play in this position, designated batsman, and now they’re retracting. So I just don’t think they kept their word.”</p><p>The 28-year-old is batting .280 with seven long balls and 31 RBI. The veteran starting pitcher is set to make his Boston Red Sox debut.</p><p>After undergoing an internal brace procedure to repair a partial tear in his UCL in 2024 and enduring a hamstring injury in March, Gioltio will <a href="https://www.masslive.com/redsox/2025/04/despite-519-era-boston-red-sox-say-starter-healthy-ready-for-wednesday.html" rel="noopener">join the big-league roster</a> for its upcoming road series versus the Toronto Blue Jays. Although the team could certainly use starting rotation depth, his rehab outings are leaving fans leery.</p><p>Giolito posted a 5.19 ERA in five starts across Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester, walking a startling 13 batters in 17 1/3 innings. The Red Sox are not letting the poor numbers deter them from sending the 2019 All-Star to an MLB mound.</p><p>“Obviously we saw the line but he’s healthy and he’s ready so the plan is for him to be with us in Toronto,” manager Alex Cora said, per MassLive’s Christopher Smith. “Most likely Game 2 (Wednesday).” Boston invested a two-year, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/lucas-giolito-makes-obvious-2025-red-sox-contract-decision">$38.5 million contract in Giolito</a>, so the organization will at least give him a chance to secure a spot in the rotation.</p><p>Though, if he continues to struggle, the team cannot afford to let money dictate its decision-making. Both Hunter Dobbins and Richard Fitts have fared well plugging in for injures starters Giolito, Brayan Bello and Kutter Crawford. They have done enough to create a rotation dilemma.</p><p>Lucas Giolito will now look to render it meaningless when he heads to the Great White North. He finished the 2023 campaign on a sour note, posting 6.89 and 7.04 ERAs with the Los Angeles Angels and Cleveland Guardians, respectively. Hopefully, Boston will get the version of Giolito that twice finished in the top-1o for American League Cy Young voting while on the Chicago White Sox.</p><p>He sports a 4.43 lifetime ERA and 1,077 strikeouts in eight seasons, as he gets set to begin the latest chapter of his MLB career.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Both guys started the season on the injured list, but it seems like they are making their way back towards full health, as they both have <a href="https://x.com/jcmccaffrey/status/1908175362837577818" rel="noopener">rehab starts on their schedule</a> next week.</p><p>“Bello pitching Sunday for Worcester and Giolito on Tuesday. Both will need at least one more rehab start after that. Giolito hasn’t pitched since 2023 after he missed the entire 2024 season due to an elbow injury he suffered in March.</p><p>Once these two guys return, Richard Fitts and Sean Newcomb are likely to get sent to the bullpen, with Kutter Crawford also expected to be a part of the team’s pitching staff once he returns from his own injury woes.
