Starting pitcher Luis Castillo struck out seven hitters across 6.2 scoreless innings. He also contained Astros star Jose Altuve, <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/luis-castillo-has-quality-start-as-mariners-win-vs-astros" rel="noopener">recording a big strikeout</a> against him early in the contest with runners on base.</p><p>“That one strikeout was the key to kind of get out of that inning with some traffic out there. So I think just going out, being able to battle, get out of there was definitely key for here in this game,” Castillo said via an interpreter, per Daniel Kramer of MLB.com.</p><p>Castillo, 32, has pitched to a 3.21 ERA across 115 innings of work. The Mariners starting pitcher has also recorded 100 strikeouts in his 20 outings. He has been impressive. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-rumors-what-mariners-told-luis-castillo-trade-suitor-despite-key-injuries">Mariners need Castillo</a> to continue to pitch at a high level.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mariners-luis-castillo-mlb-rumors-offseason-trade">Castillo was mentioned in trade rumors</a> before the 2025 season. It is difficult to imagine Seattle moving on from the veteran right-handed pitcher at this point, however. Following Friday’s win, the Mariners only trail the Astros by four games in the American League West standings. Not only is Seattle a serious division contender, but the Mariners are in prime position to at least make an American League Wild Card run.</p><p>The Mariners and Astros will finish their three-game set with two more games over the weekend. Houston is trying to make a statement, but Seattle is not going to back down. The Mariners’ 6-1 win on Friday evening was a tremendous way to begin the series as they attempt to climb back in the division standings.</p><p>Seattle will host Houston on Saturday night at 8:40 PM EST in Game 2 of the series. Lance McCullers Jr. will get the ball for the Astros while Logan Evans will try to lead the Mariners to a second consecutive victory against the division rival.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He studied journalism and communication at UConn.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">MLB</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The Seattle Mariners are in desperate need of an offensive jolt, especially with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-news-mariners-victor-robles-painful-injury-possible-catch-year-giants">the injuries to Victor Robles</a> and Ryan Bliss, and despite having a stacked starting rotation that will get George Kirby back from injury at some point, the organization has not made veteran starter Luis Castillo <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2025/04/13/mlb-free-agents-lance-lynn-vladimir-guerrero/83060198007/" rel="noopener">available in a trade</a>, at least at the moment.</p><p>“The Seattle Mariners desperately need some offensive help after injuries to right fielder Victor Robles and second baseman Ryan Bliss will sideline them for at least three to four months,” Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY wrote. “Yet, one club who offered a young infielder for veteran starter Luis Castillo, was told that Castillo remains off-limits – at least for now.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-luis-castillo-mlb-rumors-offseason-trade">Rumors surrounding a potential trade of Castillo are not new</a>, as there was much speculation that he could be on the move in the offseason. He is the logical trade chip for the Mariners because he is on a five-year, $108 million contract. The Mariners could get some offensive help in a trade involving Castillo along with some financial flexibility. Castillo counts for $21.6 million against the Mariners’ luxury tax payroll for at least through the 2027 season, and there is a vesting option for the 2028 season as well.</p><p>It has been an interesting start to the 2025 season for the Mariners and the rest of the American League West. The Los Angeles Angels have surprised and are off to a 9-5 start so far, while the Texas Rangers are 9-6. The Mariners sit in third at 7-8, but figure to be in the playoff picture for the majority of the season. The Houston Astros sit at 6-8, while the Athletics are in last with a 6-9 record.</p><p>It is still wide open in the American League West, and eventually, the Mariners might have to make a decision with Castillo to jumpstart the lineup this season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Manager Dan Wilson announced that Gilbert would take the mound against the Oakland Athletics on March 27 at T-Mobile Park.</p><p>The decision came as a slight surprise, as three-time All-Star Luis Castillo had started the season for Seattle the past two years. However, Castillo fully embraced the choice, <a href="https://x.com/DKramer_/status/1901027607342444782" rel="noopener">celebrating his teammate’s achievement.</a></p><p>“I’m super happy for him,” Castillo said. “When [Dan Wilson] pulled me in and told me that he was going to give it to him, I was happy because I’ve had three or four Opening Days and this is his first one.”</p><p>Gilbert, now entering his fifth season in the majors, has been one of the most consistent arms in Seattle’s rotation. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mariners-news-logan-gilbert-all-star-revelation-parents-unbelievably-heartwarming">He earned his first All-Star nod in 2024</a> and was named the Mariners’ Most Valuable Pitcher by the Seattle chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.</p><h2><b>Logan Gilbert earns the Opening Day nod for the Mariners after emerging as their ace</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Logan-Gilbert.jpg"><figcaption>Rick Scuteri-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Last season, he posted career-best numbers in multiple categories, leading the American League in innings pitched (208 2/3) and WHIP (0.89). His 3.23 ERA, 220 strikeouts, and 22 quality starts solidified his role as the Mariners’ ace.</p><p>“I was super excited, obviously,” Gilbert said. “A little caught off guard because I didn’t want to expect it, of course, with Luis being the veteran guy. And I thought he’s completely deserving. We have a bunch of guys on our staff that could be Opening Day starters. But when [Wilson] told me, I was excited, a little caught off guard all at the same time. But it’s something you always dream of. It’s a really big deal, so I don’t take it lightly.”</p><p>Gilbert’s rise to the top of the rotation has been aided by Castillo, who was acquired from the Cincinnati Reds in 2022. The veteran right-hander has been a mentor to Gilbert, helping him refine his game and embrace his potential.</p><p>“He’s helped me a ton,” Gilbert said. “It’s great to have his presence, and he just keeps it loose. Awesome teammate, that kind of stuff. But he really has kind of put his arm around me at times and helped me and steered me in the right direction. If something’s off track, if I’m overthinking, whatever it may be, he’s very good at just being himself. And he’s helped me kind of lean into that, as well.”</p><p>When Wilson informed both pitchers of the decision, Castillo’s reaction was nothing but supportive.</p><p>“When Dan told me, for like five seconds, probably, I don’t think a word came out,” Gilbert said. “I was just, like, taking it in. And Luis was like, ‘Say something!’ He was super excited for me and giving me hugs and all this kind of stuff. That’s just the kind of guy he is behind closed doors. He’s the exact same thing that you see on the field.”</p><p>“I think back to high school and college, and it felt like a holiday on Opening Day,” he said. “It’s the first game of the year, all the best pitchers are out there. To me, it felt like the world stopped for that day, and everybody just had their TV on and watched the best pitchers in the game go at it. So, it feels like a holiday. It always has for me. And I’m sure it will again this year.”</p><p>Gilbert will be the first Opening Day starter drafted and developed by the Mariners since Félix Hernández in 2018. Luis Castillo was a candidate as well, but Gilbert ultimately earned the nod. Castillo <a href="https://x.com/shannondrayer/status/1900952338216743099" rel="noopener">seems to be in support</a> of Gilbert, however.</p><p>“For five seconds probably I don’t think a word came out, I was just, like, taking it in,” Gilbert told reporters, via Shannon Drayer. “And Luis is like, ‘say something!’ Super excited for me, giving me hugs and all this kind of stuff. I mean, that’s just the kind of guy he is. Behind closed doors he’s the exact same thing that you see.”</p><h2><b>Logan Gilbert starting Opening Day for Mariners</b></h2><p>As Gilbert said, he was initially just taking the moment in. The right-handed hurler is ready to lead Seattle in 2025. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/fatal-flaw-seattle-mariners-address-2025-mlb-season">Mariners still have some questions to answer</a>, but their starting pitching projects to be strong.</p><p>Gilbert also added that <a href="https://x.com/ByTimBooth/status/1900950970844279051" rel="noopener">he wanted to be respectful</a> of Castillo after learning of the news.</p><p>“I was super excited (about starting Opening Day) obviously, a little caught off guard because I didn’t want to expect it of course with Luis being the veteran guy,” Gilbert said, via Tim Booth. “I thought he’s completely deserving. We have a bunch of guys on our staff that could be Opening Day starters.”</p><p>It is worth noting that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-luis-castillo-mlb-rumors-offseason-trade">Castillo was mentioned in offseason trade rumors</a>. A trade did not come to fruition, though, and now Castillo will instantly become one of the best No. 2 starters in all of baseball behind Gilbert in the rotation.</p><p>This Mariners ball cub is built on starting pitching. George Kirby, Bryce Miller, Bryan Woo and Emerson Hancock are all capable of making an impact alongside Gilbert and Castillo. The Mariners will need more overall offensive production from the lineup, but Seattle’s pitching is set to lead the way.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Castillo showed well that year en route to a playoff appearance, which earned the righty a lucrative contract extension. But, it’s been downhill since, and the M’s <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-mariners-discouraged-stance-luis-castillo-trade-talks">are now trying to trade Castillo.</a></p><p>However, his trade value<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6043451/2025/01/07/braves-offseason-angels-free-agents/" rel="noopener"> has “diminished”</a> partially for two reasons.</p><p>Via Ken Rosenthal:</p><p>“Two-and-a-half years later, Castillo’s trade value has diminished, in part because he is not quite the pitcher he was in ‘22 and in part because he is owed $68.25 million over the next three years.”</p><p>That’s a lot of money for any team to take on for a guy who was just 11-12 with a 3.64 ERA in the 2024 season. However, as Rosenthal noted, there are other problems as well. His fastball velocity has dipped nearly two MPHs since ’22, going from 97 to 95.6 in ’24. The Mariners starter isn’t striking out as many hitters, either. Also, Castillo owns a sub-four ERA on the road since coming to Seattle while posting a 2.89 ERA at T-Mobile Park.</p><p>The Mariners are looking to acquire big league talent in return for Castillo. They have a young, talented rotation with the likes of Logan Gilbert, Bryan Woo, and George Kirby, so losing Castillo isn’t exactly the end of the world. But, Seattle has to make sure the package is worth their while.</p><p>Bob Nightengale mentioned the Baltimore Orioles as a potential trade suitor for Castillo given their need for starting pitching. The O’s also have a plethora of young hitters they could include in a potential package to send back to the Mariners. In fact, the two clubs <a href="https://x.com/MLBNetwork/status/1876275602614870091" rel="noopener">have discussed</a> a Castillo trade in recent days, per Jon Morosi.</p><p>By the sounds of it, Castillo will likely be in another uniform sooner rather than later.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
