He joined ClutchPoints in 2023.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Boston Red Sox</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>One of the big stories of the last few weeks <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-marcelo-mayer-lands-il-before-dodgers-clash">for the Boston Red Sox</a> has been the injury status of rookie infielder Marcelo Mayer, who exited a late July game with a wrist injury. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-rumors-star-rookie-prospect-need-season-ending-surgery">Mayer has been</a> on the injured list since then, causing some fans to wonder whether his standout first season in the big leagues would ever resume.</p><p>On Sunday, fans <a href="https://x.com/timbhealey/status/1957094790736072788" rel="noopener">got their unfortunate answer.</a></p><p>“Marcelo Mayer will have surgery on his right wrist, Alex Cora said. His season is over. He should be ready for spring training,” reported Tim Healy of The Boston Globe on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>However, despite the setback, Mayer is still planning to stick around the organization as much as possible and absorb as much as he can.</p><p>“By no means do I think my season is over when it comes to learning and getting better. We have a lot of resources here, a lot of veterans who I can still use to help me get better and more knowledgeable,” said Mayer, per Healy.</p><p>Meanwhile, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reported on the Red Sox’s thinking amid the injury.</p><p>“My understanding of this Mayer situation is that surgery was always inevitable but the hope was they could get the wrist to a point where it was about pain tolerance and trying to play through. Clearly, the resumption of baseball activities didn’t go as planned,” reported Cotillo on X.</p><p>Meyer was drafted in the first round back in 2021 and made his MLB debut with the Red Sox this year after spending the last several seasons in their farm system.</p><p>Meyer has hit four home runs so far in his MLB career along with 10 RBI’s and a batting average of .228.</p><p>Hopefully, Meyer will be ready to return well ahead of next season.</p><p>In any case, the Red Sox will next take the field on Sunday afternoon vs the Miami Marlins.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Red Sox manager Alex Cora was already without Alex Bregman thanks to injury. Now, he turns to Abraham Toro to take Marcelo Mayer’s spot in the lineup. It is worth mentioning that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-mookie-betts-may-miss-series-opener-vs-red-sox-undisclosed-reason">Los Angeles will be without Mookie Betts for the series opener</a> because of personal issues.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-marcelo-mayer-exits-vs-phillies-wrist-injury">Mayer suffered a wrist injury against the Philadelphia Phillies</a> earlier this week. Cora took him out of Wednesday’s game to avoid making things worse. Unfortunately, the young standout was diagnosed with a right wrist sprain. According to MLB.com reporter Ian Browne, the Red Sox put Mayer on <a href="https://x.com/IanMBrowne/status/1948817254352597451" rel="noopener">the 10-day injured list</a>. While he recovers, David Hamilton will take his place on the roster.</p><p>Losing Mayer is another tough blow that Cora has to endure. Despite Boston’s injuries, they still cling to the final wild card spot in the American League playoff picture. However, the Texas Rangers and Tampa Bay Rays are each less than two games behind them in the standings. Even when he returns from the IL, the injury could linger and affect his production. Cora could decide to move him from the left side of the infield to relieve him of his normal responsibilities at shortstop. The Phillies saw Bryce Harper get off to a great start in the finale. Unfortunately, Alex Cora had to take out Marcelo Mayer before the top of the seventh inning, replacing him with Abraham Toro.</p><p>Mayer <a href="https://x.com/timbhealey/status/1948184911854162113" rel="noopener">left the game</a> with left wrist discomfort, according to Boston Globe reporter Tim Healey. The injury is concerning for the 22-year-old infielder who has held down third base for Cora. With Alex Bregman out with injury, the Red Sox have had to get creative with their lineup. Luckily for them, Mayer has emerged as a young star at third base, providing stability in the hot corner.</p><p>The rookie infielder went to the clubhouse to get checked out by team doctors. The severity of his injury is up in the air, but Boston fans hope that he is not out for very long. In the meantime Toro has proven that he is a competent replacement.
