With the contest knotted at three in the seventh inning, Aaron Judge played hero with a clutch, go-ahead home run to right center. Cody Bellinger then put an exclamation point on the evening, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-yankees-complete-royals-sweep-cody-bellinger-catch">ending the game with a remarkable diving catch</a> in the ninth inning.</p><p>Despite the superb defensive effort from the Gold Glove outfielder, Bellinger <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/aaron-judge-hits-go-ahead-homer-as-yankees-beat-royals" rel="noopener">shined the spotlight</a> on Judge after the game. “It’s truly amazing… I just feel like, in any situation, he’s going to come out on top. He’s the best player on this planet, and it’s fun to watch,” Bellinger said of his new teammate, per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.</p><h2><b>Aaron Judge powers the Yankees to victory</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Aaron-Judge_8b0d66.jpg"><figcaption>Wendell Cruz-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The reigning AL MVP is off to a scorching-hot start this season. While it had been 10 games since his last home run, Judge leads all of baseball in batting average (.409), on-base percentage (.519), slugging percentage (.803), OPS (1.322), hits (27) and bWAR (1.6). He’s second in home runs with seven and leads the American League in RBI (21) and runs (20).</p><p>The Yankees have needed every bit of Judge’s epic start as the team is still figuring out its starting rotation. New York lost ace Gerrit Cole to season-ending Tommy John surgery this spring and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-brian-cashman-luis-gil-injury-timeline">Luis Gil is on the shelf for multiple months</a> with a high-grade lat strain.</p><p>The Yankees did get Clark Schmidt back on Wednesday after he opened the season on the IL with rotator cuff tendinitis. He pitched well in his 2025 debut, going 5.2 innings against the Royals, allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts.</p><p>However, it was reliever Fernando Cruz who stepped up, preserving New York’s 4-3 lead and slamming the door on the Royals with a two-inning save. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-aaron-judge-feeling-fernando-cruz-royals-sweep">Cruz’s performance earned praise from Judge</a>.</p><p>Despite a solid start to the season, the Yankees’ rotation does have some serious question marks. The Yankees captain reached base all four times he stepped to the plate, going 3-for-3 with a walk and the eventual game-winning homer—his seventh of the season—in the bottom of the seventh inning. Judge’s solo blast off Royals reliever John Schreiber was a 407-foot missile into the bullpen in right-center, breaking a 3-3 tie and giving the Yankees the lead for good.</p><p>Judge is off to a blistering start in 2025. Through 18 games, he leads MLB with a .409 batting average and 1.322 OPS, along with an AL-best 21 RBIs. It’s the kind of production that’s becoming routine for the 2022 MVP and 2024 MVP runner-up.</p><p>But Judge wasn’t alone in helping New York complete the sweep. Anthony Volpe and Bellinger, both of whom had struggled mightily at the plate in recent weeks, contributed key RBI hits earlier in the game. In the third inning, Volpe ripped a two-run double after a Judge double and Jazz Chisholm Jr. walk. An inning later, Bellinger drove in two with a ground-rule double down the first base line, pushing the Yankees ahead 4-1.</p><p>On the mound, Clarke Schmidt gave the Yankees a much-needed solid outing. Making his season debut after a rehab stint, Schmidt lasted 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two. He wasn’t overpowering, but he was efficient and kept the Royals off balance through the middle innings.</p><p>Kansas City jumped out early with an RBI double from Salvador Perez in the first, and clawed back with two more runs in the fifth courtesy of a triple by Kyle Isbel and a groundout by Jonathan India. That tied the game at three before Judge’s home run tipped the scales.</p><p>The Yankees’ bullpen handled the rest. Mark Leiter Jr. and Fernando Cruz combined for 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, with Cruz working around a walk and a single in the ninth before Bellinger’s highlight-reel catch slammed the door.</p><p>With the win, the Yankees improved to 11-7 and wrapped up a 4-2 homestand. They now hit the road for a three-city trip, starting in Tampa. I just want to pick some spots here, especially getting through 13 (games) in a row here,” Aaron Boone said, via Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.</p><p>It has been a bit of an eventful start to the season for Bellinger, as he has <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-cody-bellinger-back-injury-concern-pirates">missed a game previously due to a sore back</a> and also <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-cody-bellinger-puking-his-brains-out-due-to-bad-wings">missed a game from food poisoning that stemmed from ‘bad wings’</a> that he had while the Yankees were in Detroit taking on the Tigers.</p><p>The Yankees are in the middle of a stretch in which they are playing 13 games in a row without an off day, and with Bellinger still getting treatment for his back, Boone is getting him a day off in the early going this season. The Yankees look to rebound from a series loss over the weekend against the San Francisco Giants as they will host the Kansas City Royals for three games.</p><p>Bellinger was brought in to partially offset the loss of Juan Soto in free agency, and the Yankees’ lineup has been potent overall this season. The problem has been the pitching staff, which is struggling with walking too many batters.</p><p>The injuries to Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil loom large in the early going. Max Fried has been as advertised after headlining the Yankees’ Soto pivot plan. The Yankees slugger (and former Dodger) needs to heed the timeless words of his <a href="https://youtu.be/fcIH5DQY6U8?si=jc77tSscc2yk9KGa" rel="noopener">former fellow Los Angeleno Ice-T</a> and remember, “Don’t hate the player, hate the game.”</p><p>Bellinger made all of upstate New York do a collective spit take this week when he said he was swearing off chicken wings for five years when a bad batch he ate on the road in Detroit <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/yankees-news-cody-bellinger-puking-his-brains-out-due-to-bad-wings">gave him food poisoning</a>.</p><p>He then added insult to injury by posting a joke pic to his Instagram Stories of a fresh batch of clearly sauced buffalo wings with the caption “Round 2!”</p><p>This was, to put it mildly, a buffalo faux pas — or buffalaux-pas, if you will — on a number of levels.</p><p>First off, Bellinger said himself the wings he ordered were plain — no sauce, no spice rubs, no flavor — so why is he throwing buffalo wings under the bus in his prank post?!</p><p>Secondly, you can’t swear off chicken wings for five years when you play for a team whose state is home to the world’s chicken wing capital — Buffalo, New York!</p><p>And third and most significantly, the true culprit in Bellinger’s food poisoning clearly wasn’t the chicken wings themselves… it’s the fact that he ordered them in Detroit!!!</p><p>What on Earth did Bellinger expect?</p><p>You play half your games in New York, where good Buffalo wings can easily be shipped down to you from upstate in a matter of hours (heck, you can probably afford to Instacart it with what the Yankees are paying you).</p><p>So why in good heavens would you order wings on the road from a hotel in Detroit?</p><p>Maybe Bellinger hasn’t lived in New York long enough yet to realize that you either get your chicken wings from an establishment in Buffalo, or you make them yourself with a bottle of Frank’s Red Hot at home.</p><p>Cody Bellinger’s initials-sharer Cory Booker recently pointed out in his record-breaking speech on the Senate floor that “”there’s only one football team in New York and that’s the Bills.”</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">“There’s only one football team in New York, and that’s the Bills.” — Cory Booker during his historic speech yesterday. <a href="https://t.co/AdIOuG5jWQ">pic.twitter.com/AdIOuG5jWQ</a></p><p>— Rich Luchette (@richluchette) <a href="https://twitter.com/richluchette/status/1907485227032719497?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">April 2, 2025</a></p></blockquote><p><script async="" src="https://instagram.com/embed.js"></script></p></figure><p>If Cody Bellinger wants to go see the only football team in his new home state play in the offseason then, he best issue a mea culpa for the wings fiasco, and quick.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He studied journalism and communication at UConn.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">MLB</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>New York Yankees outfielder <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-cody-bellinger-puking-his-brains-out-due-to-bad-wings">Cody Bellinger was out of the lineup on Tuesday</a> against the Detroit Tigers due to a case of food poisoning from, ‘bad wings.’ He is back in the lineup for the Yankees on Wednesday in the series finale, and he <a href="https://www.nj.com/yankees/2025/04/yankees-cody-bellinger-makes-promise-after-food-poisoning-clears-air-on-viral-post.html" rel="noopener">made a firm declaration</a> on the next time he will eat chicken wings.</p><p>“I can say that I will not eat wings for five years,” Cody Bellinger said, via Max Goodman of NJ Advance Media. “The thought of it right now makes me sick!”</p><p>Bellinger ordered traditional bone-in wings to his hotel room on Monday while watching the NCAA men’s national championship between Florida and Houston. It was a case of bad luck. He said that the wings seemed fine when he got them, but he woke up early the next morning and threw up for hours.</p><p>“Bad wings, man,” Bellinger said. “They were good coming in, but I woke up at 4 a.m. sweatin’ and just started throwing up for a few hours. It was a tough morning.”</p><p>On Tuesday, Bellinger jokingly posted a plate of wings on his Instagram story with the caption, ‘Round 2!!’. He insisted that the post was a joke.</p><p>“I don’t even want to think about wings,” Bellinger said.</p><p>As far as recovery, Bellinger said he slept a ton and hydrated to get ready for Wednesday’s game. He also noted that he dealt with food poisoning before, with the previous case happening in 2023 when the Chicago Cubs played in London.</p><p>“Slept a ton last night,” Bellinger said. “My one time before, it was 24 hours. Just hydrating and getting ready to play.”</p><p>After a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-cody-bellinger-back-injury-concern-pirates">small back issue over the weekend for Bellinger</a> and now dealing with food poisoning, he is back in the lineup. The Yankees have had a rough first two games against the Tigers. They will look to salvage the last game of the three-game set with Max Fried taking the mound.
