Kirk, who was one of the most influential voices in conservative media, was assassinated on September 10. A funeral service was held on Sunday, September 21 — an event that saw many prominent people speak such as President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance and Kirk’s widow (and recently appointed Turning Point USA CEO) Erika Kirk. Shaw, who called Kirk a personal friend, revealed that Erika texted him to see if he could attend the funeral service.</p><p>“Charlie, he was someone that I met in the apartments in Arizona where I lived,” Shaw <a href="https://x.com/Josh_Frydman/status/1970580084286464490" rel="noopener">told reporters</a> Tuesday, via Josh Frydman. “And then someone who was one of the biggest Cubs fans I ever met. He texted me after every game, you know, great win for the Cubbies. Super, super supportive of us. And obviously someone who was really faithful, so we connected on that front.</p><p>“But yeah, I mean, his wife Erika had texted me if I would come to the funeral. I felt as though it was something that was really important for me to do.”</p><p>Kirk, who was originally from Illinois, was indeed a Cubs fan. According to Matt Shaw, Charlie Kirk would often text him after Cubs’ victories in support of the team.</p><p>A reporter followed up on Shaw’s initial comments by asking the rookie infielder if he was concerned about potential backlash for attending the funeral service. Shaw made it clear that he was not worried at all, however.</p><p>“I’m not concerned at all, no” Shaw responded. “My connection with Charlie was through our faith. That’s something that drives me everyday. That’s the reason why I’m able to do what I do everyday. And that’s something I’m extremely thankful for. I know without my faith and without the many blessings I’ve been given in my life, that I wouldn’t be here, able to talk to you guys, able to help this team eventually go and win championships. Despite <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/chicago-cubs/cubs-news-cubs-cf-pete-crow-armstrong-elite-ryne-sandberg-club-cardinals-game">CF Pete-Crow Armstrong joining the late Ryne Sandberg</a> with 30 or more steals, the Cubs have struggled offensively.</p><p>Since the All-Star break, Chicago has seen a sharp decline in batting average, runs scored, and extra-base hits. Star players such as <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/chicago-cubs/cubs-news-kyle-tucker-finger-injury-causing-slump">Kyle Tucker has endured a slump</a> purportedly due to a finger injury.</p><p>Nevertheless, third baseman Matt Shaw <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/matt-shaw-hits-two-run-home-run-in-cubs-loss-to-cardinals" rel="noopener">was the shining light</a> for the Cubs, per Jordan Bastian of MLB.com.</p><p>Shaw went 1-for-4 and knocked in those two runs with a home run in the bottom of the 5th. He was ecstatic as he rounded the bases, hoping it would be the spark the team needed.</p><p>Unfortunately, it was to no avail.</p><p>“Usually, I’m pretty even-keeled,” Shaw said. “I definitely let out a little bit of emotion there. But it’s unfortunate how the game ended up, for sure.”</p><p>Afterward, Shaw gave credit to Cardinals pitcher Sonny Gray who threw him a 1-2 pitch that led to the Cubs tying the game at two.</p><p>“He’d been pitching really, really well up to that point,” he said. “And we hadn’t really gotten much going. So, it really felt like a huge part of the game.”</p><p>Additionally, Shaw attributed his mental and emotional growth to his success.</p><p>“[You] trust the preparation,” Shaw said. “But it’s really kind of just enjoy being up there and playing free. And not trying to get a hit necessarily, but kind of trusting that by being up there, being confident, not putting too much pressure, that good things happen.”</p><h2><b>Matt Shaw’s optimism for the Cubs</b></h2><p>When it comes to resilience, Shaw <a href="https://cubbiescrib.com/the-cubs-need-matt-shaw-to-catch-fire-in-iowa-before-solving-the-third-base-crisis-01jsx8es3bmr#:~:text=Matt%20Shaw%20seems%20to%20be,the%20cover%20off%20the%20ball." rel="noopener">knows a thing or two</a>. In 2023, he was drafted by the Cubs out of the University of Maryland.</p><p>At first, he showed obvious signs of struggle. In his first 18 games, he batted .172 with a .535 OPS. Afterward, Shaw was sent to Triple-A Iowa and saw his numbers improve.</p><p>He hit 339/.379/.500 in his first 17 games in Iowa. Colorado briefly took the lead in the top half of the 11th inning when Brenton Doyle grounded out to score the go-ahead run. But the Cubs, who have now gone 8-2 in their last 10, showed why they’ve become one of the hottest teams in baseball.</p><p>Rookie Pete Crow-Armstrong started as the free runner on second in the bottom of the inning and quickly stole third base. It is one of the many reasons that Cubs manager Craig Counsell and the team brass sought to bring <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/cubs-news-recall-top-prospect-second-chance-in-show">Shaw back to the majors</a> once again. After breaking camp with the team out of Spring Training, Shaw struggled in his first big league stint, resulting in being sent back down to Triple-A. After some adjustments, his bat came back to life, and the franchise was forced to give him back the third base role.
