Nevertheless, Phillies manager Rob Thomson has <a href="https://x.com/MattGelb/status/1846215693345185912" rel="noopener">reportedly been rewarded</a> with a contract extension, per Matt Gelb of The Athletic.</p><p>“Phillies extended manager Rob Thomson’s contract by one year, to take him through 2026. The entire coaching staff will return. Dave Dombrowski talked at length about how much he likes his roster, preaching the status quo. He did not show many cards on Oct. 15,” Gelb wrote on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>So why did the Phillies decide to give Thomson an extension and bring the rest of the coaching staff back?</p><p>“I think we have a good coaching staff,” Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski <a href="https://x.com/NBCSPhilly/status/1846206978311299452" rel="noopener">said</a>, via NBC Sports Philadelphia. “I mean, they do a very efficient job. They did lead us to 95 wins and they have been with us for a couple years… They are very efficient, they do their job well. We have a good manager, they work well with the manager, they report directly to him. He would like all his coaches back. To me it was pretty simple in that regard.”</p><h2><b>Rob Thomson’s managerial career with Phillies</b></h2><p>Thomson landed the Phillies manager job during the 2022 season. Philadelphia ended up reaching the World Series that year. He impressed the organization and they decided to make him their manager for years to come.</p><p>Thomson led the ball club to wins in 2023 and 95 victories this past season. He has yet to lead Philadelphia to a World Series victory, but the Phillies have been a consistent contender with Thomson leading the way.</p><p>If 2025 ends in further disappointment perhaps the team will <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/phillies-news-philly-mulling-rob-thomson-decision-nlds-exit">consider making changes to the coaching staff</a>. Their one postseason win was a walk-off from Nick Castellanos but their bullpen and lineup were not consistent. After a third straight season falling short in the playoffs, it may be time for the Phillies to make changes to keep their championship window open. ESPN’s Jeff Passan <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/story/_/id/41781191/mlb-playoffs-2024-world-series-nlcs-alcs-takeaways-surprises-dodgers-yankees-mets-guardians" rel="noopener">thinks the</a> window may be closing.</p><p>“The Phillies will have seven core players already in their 30s on Opening Day next season: J.T. Realmuto and Zack Wheeler (34), Nick Castellanos (33), Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper (32), and Aaron Nola and Trea Turner (31),” Passan wrote.</p><p>Many of those guys are All-Star-caliber players and the reason the Phillies are in the postseason year-over-year. Passan said that he is not saying they would be better off without these guys. They do need to get younger and they have <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/phillies-news-phillies-flame-throwing-prospect-shows-off-potential-injury-return">options in the farm system</a> to shake things up.</p><p>“But when a team is loaded with players in their 30s, the precipice of the cliff is nearer than it might seem. The Phillies recognize that, and the winter ahead will reflect it,” he added.</p><p>This collapse was a slow burn starting just before the All-Star break and their issues must be fixed to compete in the NL East next season.</p><h2><b>Phillies have a busy offseason coming up</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Bryce-Harper-with-Philadelphia-Phillies.jpg"><figcaption>Wendell Cruz-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>While the Phillies did run away with the National League East this season, they are no guarantee to compete for the crown in 2025. The Braves dealt with a catastrophic amount of injuries and still won 89 games. And the same Mets they just lost to could make a massive addition this winter. To keep up with those teams, they have to make big changes.</p><p>A massive trade is unlikely to happen this winter. The core pieces all have long contracts and are some of the biggest names in the sport. Harper certainly won’t be dealt, Turner’s contract is immovable, and Castellanos would be selling low. While the starting pitching was great during the year, they might want to add a Garrett Crochet-type player as their big move.</p><p>The white whale of Phillies fans is Luis Robert Jr., Chicago White Sox centerfielder. He is one of the premier centerfielders in baseball when healthy but is stuck on the worst team in sports. The price would be astronomical, but Philly needs a centerfielder. With the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/phillies-most-blame-embarrassing-nlds-loss-mets">Philadelphia Phillies now ousted from the postseason</a>, manager Rob Thompson could be the next to go.</p><p>The Phillies <a href="https://x.com/BNightengale/status/1844776134883340741" rel="noopener">have not yet determined</a> the fate of Thompson or his staff, via Bob Nightengale of USA Today. But the fact that there is a decision to be made at all shows Philadelphia is considering making some changes.</p><p>Thompson has been at the helm since 2022, compiling a 250-185 record. The Phillies have made the playoffs all three seasons under Thompson, winning the NL pennant in 2022 and NL East in 2024. However, Philadelphia hasn’t won the big one. Their last World Series title came in 2008.</p><p>The Phillies would be making a major statement if they fired Thompson. However, the expectations for the manager that follows is sky high. It’s not that Thompson has failed in his role, it’s just that Philadelphia has lofty goals.</p><p>Even if Thompson keeps his job, the Phillies could still choose to part ways with some of the coaches below him. However, it’s tough to find a scapegoat. Philadelphia ranked fifth in runs (784) and 11th in ERA (3.85). While 11th certainly isn’t the worse, perhaps the Phillies’ pitching coaches should be on red alert.</p><p>Both of those numbers dropped in the playoffs. Philadelphia had the worst overall ERA of any playoff team at 5.82. Furthermore, their 12 runs scored were tied for seventh.</p><p>While they came into the playoffs with plenty of momentum, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/phillies-news-nick-castellanos-ruthlessly-roasted-blunt-take-nlds-elimination">Phillies fell short in the NLDS</a>. That doesn’t take away any of the success they had during the regular season nor their NL East title. Outside of ClutchPoints, Meyers does play-by-play broadcasting for various colleges in the northeast.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">MLB</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>It was a scene all too familiar to the Philadelphia Phillies Wednesday night in New York as their 2024 season came to a crashing end against a rival in the New York Mets. The Phillies were favored to win the series and many believed they had the right roster to go all the way this year.</p><p>Instead, after a 95-win regular season, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mets-news-carlos-mendoza-reaction-nlds-win-sums-wild-ride">Phils packed their bags</a> after a brutal showing in the National League Division Series.</p><p>The signs of decline were there throughout the second half. The Phillies played .500 baseball, including their four playoff games, over their last 102 games. Yet when the calendar flipped to October, Philadelphia expected to hit another gear as they did over the previous two postseasons.</p><p>That gear never came and the Phillies now look ahead to a crucial offseason. Changes need to be made after Philly brought back virtually the same team this year from 2023. While most of the names will remain, there are obvious holes the Phils need to fix.</p><p>Before that though, there needs to be reflection on <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/phillies-news-rob-thomson-100-real-mets-after-wasted-season">why Philadelphia’s season ended</a> the way it did. Playing the blame game isn’t always fun, but it also provides an outlook on the improvements a team needs to make.</p><p>Here are a few factors that ultimately led to the Phillies’ downfall.</p><h2><b>Phillies bullpen implodes to historic lows</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Phillies-Estevez-Lindor-HR.jpg"><figcaption>Brad Penner-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Phillies bullpen was regarded as among the best in baseball to begin the season. It was a massive turnaround from just a few years ago when Philadelphia’s relievers often couldn’t buy an out.</p><p>Throughout much of the campaign, the bullpen lived up to that label but finished the regular season ranked 14th with a 3.97 ERA. After seeing what their arms did in this series, the Phillies would’ve loved to see that number again.</p><p>Philadelphia’s bullpen recorded an 11.37 ERA against the Mets in the NLDS, allowing 16 earned runs in 12 2/3 innings. It’s the fifth-highest bullpen ERA in a single playoff series in MLB history (minimum 10 innings).</p><p>The Phillies used 11 pitchers in the series. All of them not named Zack Wheeler or Ranger Suarez allowed an earned run. In other words, every reliever Philadelphia trotted out to the mound surrendered an earned run.</p><p>Jeff Hoffman and Matt Strahm, both first-time MLB All-Stars this season and anchors for the Phils, combined to allow 10 earned runs in 3 1/3 innings. The former took the loss in Game 1 and Game 4. The first three Mets hitters reached base on Hoffman in the bottom of the sixth in Game 4. All three scored on a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mets-news-francisco-lindor-breaks-internet-dagger-phillies">Francisco Lindor grand slam</a> right after Hoffman was pulled.</p><p>The bullpen might be the Phillies’ biggest priority this offseason. Hoffman and Carlos Estevez are slated to be free agents and will likely command multiyear deals. Then there are questions about those under contract, particularly Jose Alvarado. Can he bounce back next season after a brutal second half? Was Strahm’s All-Star campaign a fluke or will he be a top option again in 2025?</p><p>There are more questions than answers for Phillies relievers following an abysmal showing in the MLB playoffs.</p><h2><b>Bottom of Philadelphia’s lineup was nonexistent</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/T.-Realmuto-Phillies.jpg"><figcaption>James A. Pittman-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>It’s hard to win in Major League Baseball when you don’t score runs. Not only did the Phillies struggle to score against the Mets, they barely got on base, specifically in their three losses.</p><p>Philadelphia scored 12 total runs in the series, seven coming in their Game 2 win. Only two runs were scored before the sixth inning in their respective games.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/phillies-news-painful-stat-reveals-glaring-reason-behind-struggles-vs-mets">Phillies were essentially playing with half a lineup</a> the entire series. Their six through nine hitters were a combined 5-for-54 at the plate for a terrible .093 batting average. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/phillies-news-alec-bohm-take-future-question">Alec Bohm</a>, who hit fifth in three of the four games, went 1-for-13. That lone hit was a single that Bohm was thrown out on trying to stretch into a double.</p><p>J.T. Realmuto, the highest-paid catcher in the league, went hitless in the series. He hit three balls out of the infield in 16 plate appearances.</p><p>The top of the order is not without blame though. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/phillies-news-kyle-schwarber-epic-proclamation-game-2-win">Leadoff hitter Kyle Schwarber</a>, who likely thought he set the tone in the series with a home run in the first inning of Game 1, recorded one hit after that. Trea Turner had three hits in the two-hole for Philadelphia, all singles. The two combined for 11 strikeouts.</p><p>The only real contributors to the offense were Bryce Harper and Nick Castellanos, who posted a 1.279 and 1.059 OPS in the series respectively. Two hitters alone can’t win ballgames in October. The Phillies learned that the hard way.</p><h2><b>Dave Dombrowski not blameless after lackluster trade deadline</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Dave-Dombrowski-Phillies.jpg"><figcaption>Lucas Peltier-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>While it comes down to how the players perform on the field, the Phillies front office can’t escape blame for not doing more to pad the roster. On paper, there weren’t many areas Philly needed to improve before the trade deadline. However, the moves president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski made were lackluster at best.</p><p>The Phillies acquired Estevez, Austin Hays and Tanner Banks in late July, along with a mix of minor leaguers. Only Estevez was truly effective, posting a 2.57 ERA in 21 innings with Philly. However, the lasting memory of his short Phillies tenure will be the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mets-news-francisco-lindor-declaration-fans-making-world-series-plans">Lindor slam he allowed in Game 4</a> if they don’t re-sign him.</p><p>Hays managed only 80 plate appearances after the trade with multiple stints on the injured list. He struck out in three of his four at-bats in the NLDS.</p><p>In Dombrowski’s defense, the Phillies’ only real need during the season was an outfield bat to platoon or replace center fielder Johan Rojas. The infield was set and Castellanos had right field locked down, while fellow outfielder Brandon Marsh recorded a .780 OPS in the first half.</p><p>Maybe a sharp decline from Marsh was somewhat predictable as he continued to struggle against lefties. His OPS dipped to .703 after the break while his strikeout rate skyrocketed. There weren’t many needle-moving outfielders available for trade though, with Randy Arozarena the most notable name moved.</p><p>Dombrowski has been aggressive in the offseason with both free-agent signings and trades, but he missed the mark for in-season acquisitions in 2024. Another strong offseason will keep him in <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/phillies-news-fans-philly-target-superstar-loss-mets">good company with Phillies fans</a>, but Dombrowski shoulders more blame than manager Rob Thomson for comparison’s sake.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Phillies bullpen, which had been one of their strengths all season, failed them in Games 1 and 4 in this series, and their lineup lacked pop and consistency outside of their big names at the top of the order.</p><p>One of those bats that failed to get going was third baseman Alec Bohm. Bohm has been swinging a cold bat lately, and that continued in this series as he was benched in Game 2 in favor of Edmundo Sosa. He was later reinserted and had the Phillies’ only RBI in game 4 on a dribbler in front of the plate, but Bohm was just 1-for-13 at the plate in what was a frustrating series.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/phillies-news-rob-thomson-reveals-why-he-benched-alec-bohm-game-2">Bohm’s temporary benching</a> combined with his poor performance at the dish led many fans to speculate whether Philadelphia would try to move on from him at the end of the season despite him not being a free agent. After the game, Bohm <a href="https://x.com/TimKellySports/status/1844184300398473512" rel="noopener">sounded confident</a> that he would be sticking around, according to Tim Kelly of Phillies Nation.</p><p>When asked if he was at a crossroads in his career, Bohm responded “No, I know where I’ll be next year.”</p><h2><b>What Phillies must do this offseason to get over the hump</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Estevez-homer.jpg"><figcaption>Brad Penner-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>It seemed like the Phillies had all of the pieces to finally bring home a World Series title for the first time since 2008, but their strengths failed them in a four-game loss to the Mets in the NLDS. The biggest stunner was the bullpen, one of the best groups in the MLB during the season, imploding in both Games 1 and 4, which cost them both games and eventually was the main reason they were sent home.</p><p>They also struggled at the plate against a Mets pitching staff that is not bad, but gettable. The Phillies managed just five runs in their three losses in this series, and three of those runs came late in blowouts that they were already out of.</p><p>While the bullpen performance was disappointing, it’s hard to say that the Phillies need to add more talent to that room after the success they had throughout the season. They need to execute better in the playoffs, but they have the horses to feel good about it.</p><p>The additions should be made to the lineup, specifically by <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/phillies-news-fans-philly-target-superstar-loss-mets">targeting a big bat like Juan Soto</a>. Soto is the biggest name on the free agent market this winter, and he would make a perfect addition to the Phillies’ lineup next to Bryce Harper. Despite a gritty outing from starter Ranger Suarez, a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mets-news-francisco-lindor-breaks-internet-dagger-phillies">sixth inning grand slam from Francisco Lindor</a> was all that the Mets needed to collect a 4-1 victory and send the Phillies home.</p><p>Philadelphia fans were understandably upset after the loss. Losing in any playoff series hurts, but losing to your bitter rivals is a difficult pill to swallow. After the game, fans were <a href="https://x.com/Anthony60957284/status/1844173650217533917" rel="noopener">parading the internet</a> imploring the Phillies to <a href="https://x.com/RantNateRant/status/1844185098041827528" rel="noopener">make a move</a> for Yankees star outfielder Juan Soto.</p><p>“*Rocking back and forth* Juan Soto will change everything. Once we have Soto the Phillies will be unstoppable. Just one more hitter. Juan Soto will change everything,” one fan commented on X, formerly Twitter. Another added, “Juan Soto’s agent can write any number he wants down and the Phillies will pay it. They have to get away from this swing at everything mentality in the playoffs. This win is the latest notch in an incredible run for the Mets, who have rallied from 11 games under .500 to being one of the final four teams standing in the league.</p><p>After the game, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza <a href="https://x.com/MLBONFOX/status/1844175169981431851" rel="noopener">expressed his gratitude</a> towards his organization.</p><p>“This is unbelievable,” Mendoza said. “This is unbelievable. Humbling. I’m looking around, it’s like a dream come true. We’ve gotta give the credit to the players, to the coaches, the whole organization. After Alec Bohm squeaked a run across for the Phillies early in the game with a little dribbler in the infield, the Mets struggled to take advantage of many opportunities to take the lead with runners on base.</p><p>In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Mets loaded the bases once again thanks to some wild pitching by Jeff Hoffman. After Carlos Estevez entered the game on the mound, Francisco Lindor made the <a href="https://x.com/MLB/status/1844160192176586900" rel="noopener">defining swing of the series</a> that sent the Mets to the NLCS. His grand slam was the difference in Game 4, and the Mets would advance to the next round with a 4-1 victory on Wednesday.</p><p>After Lindor changed the dynamics of the playoffs with one swing, baseball fans all over the internet went crazy.</p><p>“Every day we give thanks that Francisco Lindor chooses to walk among us instead of ascending to the higher plane of existence where he belongs,” one fan commented on X, formerly Twitter. Another added, “Francisco Lindor should never be booed ever again.
