Baldelli <a href="https://twitter.com/DanHayesMLB/status/1666834606249635841" rel="noopener">addressed a baserunning error</a> from Max Kepler in the Twins’ walk-off loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.</p><p>Kepler did not take second base when his teammate Michael Taylor stole third in the top of the ninth. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/twins-news-minnesota-activates-royce-lewis-max-kepler-injured-list" rel="noopener">Royce Lewis roped a single</a> into left field that scored Taylor and likely would have scored Kepler had he taken second base. The Twins ended up losing the game 2-1.</p><p>“Max should have been on second base. This is a baseball play and they weren’t holding him. They were actually just giving him second base. That’s more being on the ball than probably anything else,” Baldelli said.</p><p>Kepler has been a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/twins-three-players-fans-are-already-fed-up-with-in-2023" rel="noopener">big part of the Twins</a> for the last seven years. The 2023 season has not gone his way as he’s hitting .192 in 37 games. The Twins are fighting for a playoff spot and need more production from Kepler. Mistakes like the one he made on Wednesday will not help his long-term cause with the Twins.</p><p>The Twins hold a 2.5 game lead over the Cleveland Guardians in the AL Central, sitting at 31-31 with 100 games left to go. Max Kepler hasn’t been the player that the Twins wanted him to be but still play him in hopes that he returns to being the player he as a few seaons ago when he hit 36 home runs. Perhaps that season was an outlier, but surely Kepler has more to offer than what he’s given this season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Kepler is dealing with a hamstring strain and his official timetable is uncertain. The Twins are hopeful he won’t be forced to miss a significant amount of time. OF Trevor Larnach was recalled in a corresponding move.</p><p>Minnesota leads the American League Central, but their past week has been filled with injuries. In addition to Kepler, it was revealed that SP Tyler Mahle <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/twins-news-minnesota-gets-crushing-tyler-mahle-injury-update-tommy-john" rel="noopener">would require</a> Tommy John surgery. Nevertheless, the Twins still hold a three-game lead in the lowly AL Central. The division is among the worst in baseball, with only Minnesota holding a record of over .500.</p><p>Max Kepler’s absence will negatively impact the Twins’ outfield depth. It is no secret that Kepler has been struggling, but he’s still a valuable part of Minnesota’s ball club.</p><p>In 2023, Kepler owns a .212/.298/.444 slash line with a .743 OPS and six home runs. He’s still offered fairly productive power but his balance as a hitter has been in question. Kepler is a player with star potential, crushing 36 home runs back in 2019. He hasn’t been able to replicate his success from that season, but injuries have continued to plague Kepler in recent years.</p><p>The Twins will look to strengthen their AL Central lead on Saturday against the Chicago Cubs at home. Minnesota lost the first game of the series but will try to bounce back with Joe Ryan (5-1, 2.45) on the mound. The Twins believed the market for Kepler would “yield a return that could aid the club in other ways,” but the desired interest hasn’t been there with spring training just two weeks away.</p><p>“There’s a lot of guys who might be listed as outfielders who play other positions, or play in the infield,” Twins president of baseball operations Derek Falvey said Friday. “With the open (designated hitter) spot and guys that could rotate through that as well, we feel like … that could be a strength of our team. Feels like we’re in a good position overall.”</p><p>The eight-year Twins outfielder earned 88 hits, 54 runs and nine home runs in 388 at-bats and 446 plate appearances in 115 games played last season, according to Baseball Reference. Max Kepler is on the fifth year of a <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/minnesota-twins/max-kepler-16101/" rel="noopener">five-year, $35 million</a> contract with a sixth-year club option he signed with the Twins in 2019, according to Spotrac. He is slated to earn and $8.5 million base salary in 2023. The 2024 club option includes a $1 million buyout.</p><p>The Twins <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/twins-news-minnesota-trade-michael-taylor-royals" rel="noopener">recently traded</a> for outfielder Michael A. Taylor from the Kansas City Royals, adding more depth to an already talented outfield. The team is projected to have Joey Gallo in left field, Byron Buxton in the middle and Max Kepler at right field.</p><p>Gallo said he was open to playing first base.</p><p>“That’s a position I don’t really have much trouble with and I told them, ‘Whatever the team needs, I’ll play whatever,’” Gallo said. “That’s one thing I take pride in bringing to the table, bringing versatility, being able to move around the diamond.”</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Minnesota has already sent Nelson Cruz to the Rays and that could be just the first of many moves for them.</p><p>While the prize pieces other teams desire from the Twins include Byron Buxton and Jose Berrios, the Yankees might not have the chips to send back in a trade for either. Max Kepler certainly has a lower asking price and could be a perfect fit in the New York outfield.</p><p>It seems as though any and everyone is on the table for the Twins and teams like the Yankees can try to swoop in to get deals done.</p><p>Kepler sputtered out of the gates this year for Minnesota but has really picked it up as of late.
