They lost 3rd baseman Max Muncy to a severe bone bruise on his knee after a collision with Michael A. Taylor on stolen base attempt. A further examination of the injury revealed that Muncy did not suffer a major tear and that he should be able to return to manager Dave Roberts’ lineup in six weeks.</p><p>As a result of the injury, Roberts is going to have to shuffle his lineup and figure out who is going to play 3rd base while Muncy is out of action. The manager said that he was going to have Tommy Edman start taking some ground balls at 3rd base. Edman has played both 2nd base and centerfield this season.</p><p>Roberts could have moved Hye Seong Kim to 3rd base, but he is more likely to leave him at 2nd base. Edman is a versatile performer who has also played shortstop in his career. He is hitting .244 with 10 home runs and 38 runs batted in this season.</p><p>Muncy <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45662676/dodgers-put-max-muncy-injured-list-bone-bruise-knee">was relieved to learn</a> the injury was not more serious because he was in significant pain after the collision with Taylor. He had to be helped off the field and he could not put any pressure on his left leg.</p><p>“It was obviously amazing hearing the news that nothing was torn, nothing was ripped,” said Muncy. “That was obviously a huge sigh of relief for me, but it still sounds like too long of a time in my head.”</p><h2><b>Dodgers have taken control of National League West</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Tommy-Edman-will-take-some-ground-balls-at-3rd-base.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>While the Muncy injury is not good news for <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/dodgers-news-freddie-freemans-clayton-kershaw-tribute-3000th-strikeout">the Dodgers</a>, the team has been playing excellent baseball and has built a sizable lead in the National League West.</p><p>Earlier in the year, the Dodgers were trying to hold off the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants. However, the Dodgers have won 14 of their last 17 games and they are now 8.5 games in front of the second-place Padres and 9.0 games ahead of the third-place Giants.</p><p>Muncy thought the injury might distract Dodgers starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw and keep him from getting his 3,000th career strikeout. However, Kershaw dropped in a breaking ball moments after the injury to Vinny Capra, and the result was a called third strike and the 3,000th strikeout of his career.</p><p>Kershaw received a huge ovation from the Dodger Stadium crowd, and Muncy was relieved that the hurler had reached that level.</p><p>Muncy is on the Injured List, and the Dodgers brought up outfielder Esteury Ruiz from Triple-A Oklahoma City. LA placed him on the injured list on Thursday, but the diagnosis is not nearly as bad as many feared.</p><p>Muncy has <a href="https://x.com/Dodgers/status/1940909354838118872?t=5-4g8nid96d8-c8RSP1DPg&amp;s=19" rel="noopener">a left knee bone bruise</a>, per the team, which is expected to keep him out of action for approximately six weeks. He avoids a season-ending injury and will ideally be back in rhythm by the time the playoffs begin.</p><p>Los Angeles <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-claim-cj-alexander-waiver-roster-move">claimed infielder CJ Alexander off waivers</a> and is calling up speedy outfielder Esteury Ruiz from Triple-A Oklahoma City.</p><h2><b>The Dodgers continue to play well below full force<br></b></h2><p>Concern was high after veteran outfielder <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-max-muncy-grabs-knee-after-scary-collision">Michael A. Taylor slid into Muncy’s leg</a> while trying to steal third base in the seventh inning of Wednesday’s game. The former Gold Glove winner was called out, a regretful moment that proved costly in a 5-4 loss to the Dodgers. Manager Dave Roberts is probably unable to fully appreciate the significance of that play as it relates to the club’s comeback, for he knows how important it is to maintain continuity in the lineup.</p><p>LA can only withstand so many lengthy stints on the IL. Its pitching staff is vastly different than the one it planned to roll out onto the mound this season, but a star-studded and gritty crop of batters has helped the 2024 World Series champions claim the best record in baseball to this point. Max Muncy, who had been an all-or-nothing type of hitter in recent years, is a key part of the team’s 2025 success. He is batting .250 with 13 home runs and 55 RBIs in 81 games.</p><p>The Dodgers (55-32) will breathe a sigh of relief and hope their sizable lead in the National League West (lead San Diego Padres by eight and a half games) will help them survive Muncy’s absence. The Dodgers earned a 5-4 win over the Chicago White Sox, but attention turned to Muncy’s injury status after the game. Dave Roberts said the Dodgers <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45652773/dodgers-max-muncy-helped-apparent-knee-injury" rel="noopener">are “optimistic”</a> following the initial tests, via Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.</p><p>Further updates should be provided within the next day or two. The Dodgers will continue to closely monitor Muncy’s status. LA will host Chicago once again on Thursday night. Muncy’s status for the contest has yet to be announced, but one has to imagine he won’t play even if the team receives more good news on Thursday.</p><p>Los Angeles won’t want to risk further injury by rushing Muncy back too soon. The 34-year-old is hoping to avoid a long-term absence, however.</p><p>A two-time All-Star, Muncy is hitting .250/.375/.457 across 315 plate appearances in 2025. The Dodgers infielder has also recorded an .832 OPS to go along with 13 home runs and 10 doubles. He has endured ups and downs over the past few seasons, but <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/dodgers-news-max-muncy-hot-streak-alive-4th-hr-4-days">Muncy has swung the bat fairly well in recent action</a>.</p><p>Overall, the Dodgers hold an 8.5 game lead in the National League West over the San Diego Padres. The San Francisco Giants trail LA by nine games.</p><p>Heading into the ’25 campaign, the Dodgers were expected by many to win the division. San Diego and San Francisco challenged them through the first couple months of the regular season, though. In June, however, the Dodgers established themselves as the clear front-runner in the division.</p><p>Barring a collapse, it appears as if Los Angeles will cruise to yet another division win.</p><p>The Dodgers and White Sox will play on Thursday night at 10:10 PM EST in Los Angeles. To make matters worse for the Dodgers, third baseman Max Muncy went down with an injury in the top of the sixth inning. It’s unclear how serious the injury is at this point.</p><p>Muncy is having another strong season as he is currently hitting .255 with 13 homers and 55 RBIs with an .838 OPS. Muncy has been with the Dodgers since 2018, and he is one of the most important players on this team. Hopefully the injury is nothing serious and he can return soon. The good news is that it was not a non-contact injury, so there is a good chance that his knee collided with the runner hard and will feel better soon.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-ohtani-30th-home-run-white-sox">The Dodgers took Game 1 of this series against the White Sox</a> 6-1, but they are having a lot more trouble here in Game 2. It was a special moment, and now the Dodgers are hoping to get a win.</p><p>So far on the season, Max Muncy and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-stat-shohei-ohtani-dominance">the Dodgers have met expectations</a>. They are the defending World Series champs, and they have one of the most loaded rosters that the sport has ever seen. LA is favored to win the World Series this year, and they have been neck and neck with the Detroit Tigers for the best record in baseball.
