Scherzer was outdueled by Max Fried, who held the Blue Jays offense in check across seven innings (allowing just three runs), and as a result, the Yankees have pulled to within two games of Toronto in the AL East standings with 19 games remaining in the regular season.</p><p>The Blue Jays’ lead over the Yankees (and Boston Red Sox) in the division has slowly been dwindling over the past few games, and this series loss won’t help matters whatsoever for Toronto in their quest to secure the division crown. Nonetheless, Scherzer, who’s seen it all and more in his successful big-league career, is <a href="https://x.com/KeeganMatheson/status/1964807880231788558" rel="noopener">not fretting the pressure</a> that New York and Boston are putting on them.</p><p>“I love where our team’s at. I love the mentality. I love the guys and how we come together. We all believe in each other and we’re all going to pick each other up. I’m glad I’m on this team,” Scherzer said, per Keegan Matheson of MLB.com.</p><p>There is no reason for the Blue Jays to panic; being composed is what got them the AL East lead to begin with. A hot streak in the middle of the season did not come from pressing, but rather from letting the game come to them. And while the series defeat to the Yankees is far from the best outcome, it is not the end of the world — and Scherzer is certainly reacting accordingly.</p><p>Alas, there is going to be no rest for the Blue Jays; while they will be heading home, they will be hosting a division leader in the Houston Astros, which should make for another incredible test of mettle for this Toronto squad.</p><h2><b>Blue Jays offense sputters in final two defeats to the Yankees</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/George-Springer-with-Toronto-blue-jays-1.jpg"><figcaption>John E. It was because the Brewers’ offense landed nine hits on him as he gave up four runs.</p><p>Scherzer <a href="https://www.sportsnet.ca/mlb/article/blue-jays-bullpen-stabilizes-in-get-right-win-over-brewers/" rel="noopener">reflected on the team’s series win</a> after the game, via SportsNet. He expressed his frustration towards his errors but understood that nights like those will happen to him and the rest of the bullpen.</p><p>“Our bullpen, hey, they’ve been having hiccups, everybody gets that — look, I give up homers as much as anybody. I get it,” said Scherzer. “But to watch those guys go out there today with a lead and throw up zeroes, that’s just big at this time of year. … I’m with these guys every single day. And I see what these guys are doing. They feature really good stuff. Toronto fired back by scoring the last four runs of the game in the fourth and fifth innings.</p><p>Despite the bullpen’s struggles, they did enough down the stretch by keeping the Brewers scoreless in the last six frames. Five relievers appeared since Scherzer’s time on the mound ended, as Tommy Nance earned the win.</p><p>Toronto improved to a 79-58 record on the season, boasting the top spot of the AL East Division standings. They are three games above the New York Yankees and 3.5 games above the Boston Red Sox.</p><p>The Blue Jays will prepare for their next series, being on the road. While there were some <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-jeff-hoffman-take-after-disaster-brewers">disastrous moments for the Blue Jays against the Brewers</a> in the current series, the management of pitcher Max Scherzer was a highlight on Sunday.</p><p>Scherzer would start the game and ended up pitching four innings as he let go of four earned runs, nine hits, while striking out one. The 41-year-old would be pulled out of the game by manager John Schneider, as he also revealed after the game that the veteran pitcher was dealing with upper back tightness.</p><p>The productive pitcher would even say in his press conference that the manager<a href="https://x.com/KeeganMatheson/status/1962263410311115100" rel="noopener"> “made the right move” and the “great news”</a> is that Toronto pulled through and got the win over an NL Central-leading Milwaukee team.</p><p>“Schneids [Schneider] made the right move to pull me in that situation,” Scherzer said, according to Keegan Matheson. “It was just something I had to deal with. I wasn’t the guy today, but the rest of the team picked me up. So far this season, Shcherzer has a 4.11 ERA to go along with 62 strikeouts and a 5-2 record in 13 starts as Schneider would say that he wanted him to go further in the game, <a href="https://www.sportsnet.ca/mlb/article/blue-jays-scherzer-felt-upper-back-tightness-during-start-vs-brewers/" rel="noopener">but gave insight into the back tightness.</a></p><p>“Obviously, I want to let Max go as deep as he can go, especially given the workload of our bullpen,” Schneider said, via SportsNet. “Just trying to manage it. It’s not like a sharp pain; it was kind of a dull pain. It was affecting the way he was pitching a little bit. So, looking forward, you want to nip that.”</p><p>At any rate, Toronto looks to further improve as the team currently has a 79-58 record, putting them at the top of the AL East as they start a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds on Monday.
