Michael King tossed four scoreless innings Tuesday in the Yankees’ 4-2 win over the Detroit Tigers. New York manager Aaron Boone was impressed with what he saw from the pitcher in his third start of the 2023 MLB season.</p><p>After the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yankees-new-york-nestor-cortes-il-decision" rel="noopener">Yankees lost multiple starting pitchers</a> for the rest of 2023, Boone moved King from the bullpen to the rotation. King threw a season-high 61 pitches against the Tigers. He struck out five batters while allowing three hits and no walks in the Yankees’ victory.</p><p>King came to the majors as a starter before turning into one of New York’s most important relievers of the last few years. The Yankees are slowly stretching King out, and Boone <a href="https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/yankees-win-second-straight-game-over-tigers">couldn’t be happier</a> with the results.</p><p>“First and foremost, he’s confident,” Boone said, via MLB.com. “He’s got a great disposition about him. He kind of has that starter look to him and way about him, and he’s done it most of his life.</p><p>“It’s just a matter of, ‘Does it translate over the long haul?’ He’s getting more and more opportunities, and you’ve got to be excited about what you’re seeing.”</p><p>Five days before starting against the Tigers, King surrendered one unearned run in 2.2 innings against the Washington Nationals. The right-hander has a 0.90 WHIP and has yet to give up an earned run during his very brief stint in New York’s rotation.</p><p>King’s progress as a starter is one of the few reasons for Yankees fans to continue watching the team through the end of the season. Fellow relief pitcher Michael King recently revealed that Kahnle shaves <a href="https://twitter.com/GaryHPhillips/status/1688600963966234631" rel="noopener">his entire body</a> when he allows a run.</p><p>“He’s like, ‘It’s a punishment. It’s a punishment. You want to be hairy,” Michael King said, via Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News. “I was like, ‘Okay… sounds good, dude.'”</p><p>Tommy Kahnle was with the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yankees-news-new-york-series-astros-concerning-stat" rel="noopener">Yankees</a> from 2017 through the 2020 season. He needed Tommy John Surgery during the 2020 season, and signed a contract with the Dodgers ahead of the 2021 season, but did not pitch at all. He returned to the mound during the 2022 season, and signed back with the Yankees for 2023.</p><p>Kahnle brought a unique attitude and energy to the clubhouse, and with that comes some unorthodox practices, like King revealed above.</p><p>Luckily, Kahnle has not given up much this season. He <a href="https://www.fangraphs.com/players/tommy-kahnle/11384/stats?position=P" rel="noopener">has given up</a> seven runs, six of them earned in 26 games for the Yankees so far this year, according to Fangraphs, so it seems that his punishment is working.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yankees-news-carlos-rodon-leaves-game-injury-brutal-start-vs-astros" rel="noopener">Yankees</a> have fallen to 4.5 games out of a playoff spot, and are trying to chase down the Toronto Blue Jays for a wild card spot. However, the bullpen has not been the problem. Scoring enough runs has been the problem. However, they are facing questions in reference to their bullpen. As a result, King is done for the season. To make matters worse, Aroldis Chapman has struggled since returning from an injury of his own. On the season, the flame-throwing left-hander has an ERA north of 5.70. This leaves Yankees manager Aaron Boone in a difficult situation.</p><p>Following another disappointing outing from Chapman recently, Boone said he feels Chapman is “close, though it was obviously a tough night for him,” <a href="https://theathletic.com/3443750/2022/07/23/yankees-michael-king-injury-orioles/">per the Athletic</a>. The Athletic also shared what Aaron Boone said about the plan moving forward for Aroldis Chapman.</p><blockquote>“We’ve just got to keep building some successes and get the confidence back to where he’s that guy out there. That’s what we’re working to do.”</blockquote><p>Aroldis Chapman has earned the right to try and break out of his slump. He is arguably the best closer of the last decade and is the owner of 315 career saves. But the Yankees desperately need the veteran to figure things out as soon as possible. The Michael King injury will be difficult to get past, but Chapman could soften the blow if he turns his season around.</p><p>New York may look to add relief pitching ahead of the 2022 MLB trade deadline as well. There is never any shortage of relievers on the open market. The Pirates’ David Bednar and Cubs’ David Robertson are intriguing relief options for the Yankees.</p><p>But New York’s aggressiveness on the reliever trade market will be defined by the performance of Aroldis Chapman over the next week.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

It really didn’t look right, and just seconds later, he seemed to be in pain as he tried to suppress his emotions.
