After his phenomenal no-hitter against the Washington Nationals, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/phillies-news-michael-lorenzen-fires-no-hitter-vs-nationals" rel="noopener">Lorenzen took a step</a> back and reflected on what his performance meant to him and the Phillies.</p><p>Lorenzen needed 124 pitches to complete his no-hitter against the Nats. But when he got the final out, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/phillies-michael-lorenzen-no-hitter-all-star" rel="noopener">Lorenzen forever immortalized himself</a> as throwing the 322nd no-hitter in MLB history. The right-hander <a href="https://twitter.com/FoulTerritoryTV/status/1689715198158856192" rel="noopener">couldn’t have asked</a> for a better way to start his Phillies tenure, via Foul Territory.</p><p>“It was so loud when I walked out for the ninth. The pitch com was turned all the way to level 20 and I couldn’t hear. It  was electric.”</p><p>Michel Lorenzen spent the first half of the season with the Detroit Tigers. However, with the Tigers well out of playoff contention, he was dealt to the Phillies at the trade deadline. With Philadelphia holding a 63-52 record, they’re atop the current Wild Card standings. If Philly can finish the second half strong, they’re in the driver’s seat for a playoff spot.</p><p>When they traded for Lorenzen, the Phillies were looking for a proven starter who can fill a crucial role in their rotation. They never expected him to throw a no-hitter in just his second start with the team. However, Lorenzen is proving Philadelphia right for taking a chance on him at the deadline.</p><p>While anything is possible, it’s hard to imagine Lorenzen putting on a performance as good as his last when he next takes to the mound. But no-hitter or not, as long as Lorenzen is pitching at the top of his game, the Phillies and their playoff hopes will be happy.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

It was certainly an impressive debut for Lorenzen in his new home park after being traded from the Detroit Tigers to the Philadelphia Phillies prior to the 2023 deadline.</p><p>It’s <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/phillies-news-the-nolan-ryan-reason-why-no-hitter-has-michael-lorenzen-in-disbelief" rel="noopener">been quite the journey</a> for the 31-year old California native. In fact, there was a time when Lorenzen was written off by many. His hard work and dedication helped him not only remain in the big leagues, but emerge as a star, making his first All-Star team in 2023 as a member of the Tigers prior to the trade.</p><p>Today, we are going to break down his career and reveal how Michael Lorenzen went from an overlooked reliever to a no-hitter throwing All-Star.</p><h2><b>Michael Lorenzen’s first years in the big leagues</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Phillies-How-Michael-Lorenzen-went-from-overlooked-reliever-to-no-hitter-throwing-All-Star-2.jpg"></figure><p>After originally being selected in the 2010 MLB Draft out of high school, he opted to instead further his baseball career in college. Lorenzen attended Cal State Fullerton and ended up getting drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 2013.</p><p>Lorenzen would cruise through the minor leagues and make his MLB debut in 2015. Despite previously being a good hitter before reaching professional baseball, Lorenzen focused on pitching at the big league level. He struggled across 27 games (21 starts) in his rookie season though, <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lorenmi01.shtml" rel="noopener">pitching to the tune</a> of a 5.40 ERA, per Baseball Reference.</p><p>He turned things around in 2016 while primarily pitching as a reliever. Lorenzen posted a 2.88 ERA across 35 appearances out of the bullpen.</p><p>Lorenzen struggled to find consistency throughout the course of his remaining years in Cincinnati. He labored through some seasons but impressed in others, all while mostly working out of the bullpen. Finally, he ended up joining the Los Angeles Angels ahead of the 2022 season.</p><h2><b>Lorenzen becomes a full-time starting pitcher</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Phillies-How-Michael-Lorenzen-went-from-overlooked-reliever-to-no-hitter-throwing-All-Star-3.jpg"></figure><p>His tenure in Cincinnati was filled with ups and downs. The harsh reality is that he’d become an overlooked reliever though. But Michael Lorenzen wanted to start games and that is exactly what the Angels allowed him to do.</p><p>Pitching in his home city, as Lorenzen is from Anaheim, CA, the right-hander finished the 2022 campaign with a 4.24 ERA over the course of 18 games (all starts). Although it wasn’t the breakout season he probably had in mind, Lorenzen had proven he could be a reliable starting pitcher in the major leagues.</p><p>Lorenzen signed with the Tigers before 2023 after just one season in Anaheim. The decision to join Detroit was questioned by some since they have struggled over the past few seasons. However, the Tigers were willing to allow Lorenzen to start on a consistent basis, and the move to Detroit benefitted Lorenzen without question.</p><p>He ended up being named to his first All-Star team as a representative of the Tigers in 2023. Prior to being traded from Detroit to Philadelphia, he posted a 3.58 ERA with 83 strikeouts as a member of the Tigers.</p><h2><b>Michael Lorenzen throws a no-hitter</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Phillies-news-Michael-Lorenzen-fires-no-hitter-vs.-Nationals.jpg"></figure><p>Being named to an All-Star team is already an impressive accomplishment. In just his second start as a member of the Phillies, however, Lorenzen fired a no-hitter against the Nationals.</p><p>It was a tremendous performance that saw Lorenzen strikeout five hitters over nine innings of work. He also walked four batters, which led to a high pitch count, but he still managed to get the job done.</p><p>For Lorenzen, it has to feel like the culmination of his aforementioned determination and hard work. He could have easily grown used to being a decent big league reliever and still made a very successful living for himself. In the end, though, Lorenzen clearly had higher aspirations and has become one of the better starting pitchers in all of baseball.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

In a game where a 28-year-old rookie hit a home run in his first major league at-bat and Nick Castellanos hit his 199th and 200th career home runs, the biggest story was the no-hitter thrown by <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/phillies-news-michael-lorenzen-fires-no-hitter-vs-nationals" rel="noopener">Phillies starting pitcher Michael Lorenzen.</a></p><p>Lorenzen had five strikeouts in his no-no, with the other 22 coming from the Phillies’ defense behind him. Nine of those 22 outs were recorded by rookie outfielder Johan Rojas. Those nine putouts are the <a href="https://twitter.com/ToddZolecki/status/1689598518699212800?s=20" rel="noopener">most by an outfielder</a> in an MLB no-hitter since 1900, according to Elias Sports. Rojas made the final out of Wednesday’s game.</p><p>Rojas made his major league debut with the Phillies on July 15 and has since become a huge part of the Phillies’ plans for the rest of the season. With Brandon Marsh down with an injury, Rojas will get the bulk of playing time in centerfield for Philly.</p><p>He’s more than earned it with his performance across the first 20 games of his career. Rojas has a .321 batting average in 53 at-bats, adding nine RBIs and five stolen bases. He’s also displayed some spectacular defense as was evident during his flawless outing during the no-hitter.</p><p>Though the game will go into the record books as <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/phillies-news-the-nolan-ryan-reason-why-no-hitter-has-michael-lorenzen-in-disbelief" rel="noopener">Michael Lorenzen’s no-hitter,</a> it was truly a full team effort by the Phillies on a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/phillies-news-insane-stat-makes-michael-lorenzens-no-hitter-vs-nationals-even-crazier" rel="noopener">historic night of baseball</a> in South Philly. He walked four batters and notched just five strikeouts while allowing a few well-hit balls into the outfield. But in the end, it didn’t matter, as he outdid his eight-inning Phillies debut with a historic performance.</p><p>The Phillies were elated when Lorenzen capped off his performance by coaxing a flyout from Dominic Smith to seal the deal in the 7-0 win. The celebration on the field poured over to the locker room where his teammates joked with the team’s lead front-office executive for <a href="https://www.espn.co.uk/mlb/story/_/id/38164331/phillies-michael-lorenzen-throws-no-hitter-vs-nationals" rel="noopener">acquiring him in a trade</a> ahead of the deadline.</p><p>“Kyle Schwarber, Rhys Hoskins and other Phillies clapped, laughed and yelled ‘great trade’ as Dave Dombrowski, the team’s president of baseball operations, walked through the clubhouse shaking hands,” writes ESPN.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">oh my god …. He eyed a pitcher with experience <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/phillies-news-the-reason-philly-had-michael-lorenzen-identified-all-along-as-trade-candidate-per-dave-dombrowski" rel="noopener">in the starting rotation and bullpen</a> that could bolster the team in the postseason. Lorenzen became his man and traded one of the franchise’s 10 best prospects, 20-year-old infielder Hao-Yu Lee, to land the veteran pitcher that had a 3.58 ERA in 105.2 innings with Detroit this season.</p><p>Trading for a player in the final year of his contract, which Lorenzen is in, can often be risky. But he has already generated great chemistry with catcher J.T. Realmuto and loves the fan base, saying in his postgame interview on NBC Sports Philadelphia that he has never played for a team with a fan base whose admiration is tangible.</p><p>“It was incredible,” Lorenzen said, via ESPN. “Walking out for the seventh, eighth and ninth, man, these fans. I’ve never been part of an organization where fans are a part of the team. And they gave me that boost that I needed…If you are feeling fatigued, you don’t feel it at all in front of these fans.”</p><p>Michael Lorenzen made history not just for himself and the Phillies but also for his high school, keeping alive <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/phillies-news-michael-lorenzens-no-hitter-preserves-perfect-record-walter-johnson" rel="noopener">an incredible streak</a> of pitchers from California’s Fullerton Union High School to make it to the majors and pitch a no-hitter. The legendary Walter Johnson is a part of that piece of history and now, so is the 31-year-old Lorenzen.</p><p>The Phillies may need to rethink their pitching plans for the playoffs with Lorenzen pitching so well. Obviously, he is bound to have a few bad starts before October. But he may be a key piece of their starting rotation in the fall along with Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola. The plan for now is to have a six-man rotation, which is rounded out by Ranger Suarez, Taijuan Walker and Christopher Sanchez. Once the rotation shrinks, the new guy could prove to be too good to be moved to the bullpen.</p><p>On a night where Nick Castellanos went yard twice to reach 200 career home runs and Weston Wilson went deep in his first major-league plate appearance with his family in the building, Michael Lorenzen stole the show. The Phillies, who are 7-3 in their last 10 games, are rolling and establishing their foothold in the National League Wild Card race in sensational fashion.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
