With just a couple of weeks remaining in the season, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/white-soxs-tim-anderson-incredibly-grateful-after-reaching-impressive-career-milestone" rel="noopener">the White Sox are</a> 56-90 and are currently in fourth place in the American League Central division, which is the worst division in all of baseball. The only team below Chicago is the Kansas City Royals, who are 46-101. The White Sox and Royals played on Wednesday night and Mike Clevinger got the start <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/white-sox-early-free-agent-targets-2023-24-mlb-offseason" rel="noopener">for the White Sox</a>. Clevinger pitched well and went six innings, giving up two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and zero walks. Unfortunately for Clevinger, things unraveled after he came out and the Royals went on to win the game 7-1.</p><p>Mike Clevinger hasn’t been with the White Sox for very long as this is his first season in Chicago after spending the last two seasons with the San Diego Padres. Whether or not Clevinger is back with the White Sox next season is up to him and the front office, but manager Pedro Grifol would like to have him back.</p><p>“He’s been as <a href="https://twitter.com/VinnieDuber/status/1702153081385816271" rel="noopener">solid as solid could be</a>,” Pedro Grifol said according to Vinnie Duber on Twitter. “In a world where there’s a need for starting pitching, who wouldn’t want Clev?”</p><p>So far this season, Clevinger has pitched 114.2 innings and he has he has a 3.61 ERA. He has struck out 101 batters and walked 38. If they don’t the White Sox would then have a decision to make on his future. They could still release him, allowing him to compete on a playoff team. Grifol is looking at both possibilities, <a href="https://twitter.com/CST_soxvan/status/1696919797898920314" rel="noopener">expecting a departure</a> and rooting for him to stay, via Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times.</p><p>“He’s been really good for us, that’s all I know. I’d like to keep him but I don’t know what other people are thinking,” Grifol said. “There are plans in place but it’s not just for Clevinger, there are always plans in place in case something happens to a starter. We’ll fill it that way, but we’ll see how it goes.”</p><p>While Grifol wants Clevinger to remain with the White Sox, it would be a bit of a shock to see him go unclaimed on waivers. Through 18 starts this season, Clevinger holds a 3.32 ERA and a 85/38 K/BB ratio. He showed off his true potential in his last outing, throwing seven scorless innings and striking out 10 in a win over the Oakland Athletics.</p><p>Unfortunately for Pedro Grifol, that seems likely to be Mike Clevinger’s final game on the White Sox. Now on waivers, Clevinger is available to numerous teams hunting a playoff spot. White Sox starting pitcher Mike Clevinger, who has been sidelined since June 16 with right biceps inflammation, <a href="https://twitter.com/CST_soxvan/status/1681405838269792271" rel="noopener">felt good</a> after throwing a bullpen on Sunday, according to Daryl Van Schouwen.</p><p>Clevinger has spent time on the injured list in each of the last five seasons but is nearing full health as the deadline approaches. The 32-year-old righty has a 3.88 ERA in 12 starts for the White Sox this season, adding three quality starts. Chicago acquired him last offseason, signing him to a one-year deal with a mutual option for 2024.</p><p>A different team may be deciding that option with Clevinger unless the White Sox decide to keep him amid the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dodgers-perfect-lucas-giolito-trade-la-offer-white-sox-rumors" rel="noopener">purge of their other pitchers.</a> Lucas Giolito and Lance Lynn are among the names that could be dealt by Chicago within the next two weeks.</p><p>It’s unlikely that Mike Clevinger will get another start in the big leagues <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-will-white-sox-buy-or-sell-ahead-of-trade-deadline" rel="noopener">before the trade deadline,</a> which could halt any sort of interest in him. He could start a rehab assignment though and be activated on the final day in order to be moved. With Hendriks, he won’t be back before the All-Star break,” Grifol said.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/white-sox-news-pitcher-liam-hendriks-returns-to-chicago-emotionalmoment-after-beating-cancer" rel="noopener">Hendriks triumphantly returned</a> to the Sox this month, after a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/white-sox-news-liam-hendriks-strikes-out-4-rehab-game" rel="noopener">scary battle with lymphoma</a> in the offseason. He landed on the IL shortly after with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/white-sox-news-liam-hendriks-breaks-silence-after-injury" rel="noopener">right elbow inflammation</a>.</p><p>“With Clevinger, it still could be <a href="https://twitter.com/scottmerkin/status/1673032891985477634" rel="noopener">up in the air</a>. He’s a starter, so he’s not coming back for an inning. We’ve just got to make sure. We’ve got to build him up,” the Sox manager continued per Scott Merkin of MLB.com.</p><p>The White Sox already lost potential starter Davis Martin to Tommy John surgery earlier this year, and have dealt with inconsistencies in the rotation throughout the 2023 campaign.</p><p>The Sox find themselves on the south side of the AL Central in <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/white-sox-pedro-grifols-al-central-chicago-fans" rel="noopener">fourth place after a dismal start</a>, but are only six games out of first place in a poor division. As the All-Star break nears, the Sox will have to do some serious soul searching if they are going to make a run, but it is yet to be determined if they will be full sellers at the deadline.</p><p>They sit with the third best odds to win the Central at +1300, behind the Twins and Guardians, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.  They certainly have the offensive talent to keep up, but many missing pieces prevent them from being a polished final product.</p><p> </p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
