Trout wasted no time proving he was a generational talent once the Los Angeles Angels handed him the reigns, and the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/st-louis-cardinals/its-been-an-honor-mike-trouts-emotional-message-to-albert-pujols-amid-retirement">impact of first baseman Albert Pujols</a>, whom the Angels signed to a 10-year, $240 million contract heading into Trout’s rookie season, on the star outfielder’s career cannot be overstated.</p><p>Speaking to reporters prior to the Angels’ Tuesday night contest against the St. Louis Cardinals, Trout admitted just how impactful being teammates with Pujols for a decade truly was, crediting the future Hall of Fame first baseman for playing a major part in <a href="https://twitter.com/joeyschneider95/status/1907212421355188490" rel="noopener">making him the player he is today</a>.</p><p>“My career wouldn’t be like this, how it is now, without him. After being a negatively impactful player for the majority of the final years of his career, he turned back the clock three years ago, tallying a 2.0 WAR and hitting some clutch dingers for his beloved ballclub.</p><p>“What he meant to this city, this organization, you felt it. Suffice to say, the Angels haven’t been very wise with their resources, and they have made the playoffs just once during Mike Trout’s career.</p><p>For the $240 million that the Angels paid Pujols, all they got was a measly 6.0 WAR (per Fangraphs) of production. I always love coming here.”</p><p>Trout was key to the Angels’ win over the Cardinals on Monday. He went 0-3 but picked up two RBIs on sacrifice flies, including the game-winning run in the tenth inning. In six games at Busch Stadium, Trout has a .261 batting average with one home run and three RBIs.</p><p>Pujols joined the Angels in 2012 after 12 iconic seasons with the Cardinals. Trout came into the season healthy and the Angels added some solid pieces in free agency. But they need their star to stay healthy to have a solid season.</p><p>Through four games, Trout has struggled this season. He is 1-13 with three strikeouts and one walk and just the two RBIs he got on Monday. The Angels have won all three games by just one run thanks to great pitching. They need Trout and the rest of the offense to step up soon to keep the momentum up.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/editorials/jorge-soler-trade-grades-braves-angels-deal">Angels added Jorge Soler</a>, Yusei Kikuchi, and Travis D’Arnaud this offseason. While those are not the Juan Sotos of the world, they are the most notable names they have added in many years. The 8-1 defeat to a White Sox team coming off a historically terrible 2024 season was bad enough. But Chicago nearly added <a href="https://x.com/TalkinBaseball_/status/1905355225730314508" rel="noopener">injury to insult</a>.</p><p>In Mike Trout’s first at-bat of the season, White Sox starting pitcher Sean Burke hit the Angels’ star on the hand with a 95 mph fastball, per Talkin’ Baseball on X. The three-time MVP worked his way back into the Angels’ lineup after suffering a season-ending meniscus tear last year.</p><h2><b>Mike Trout avoided injury in Angels’ season opener</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Mike-Trout_862b87.jpg"><figcaption>Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The previous season Trout was limited to 82 games due to a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-angels/angels-of-mike-trouts-next-major-step-toward-return-amid-hand-injury-revealed">broken hamate bone in his left hand</a>. He attempted to come back from the injury but was ultimately placed on the 60-day IL, which ended his season.</p><p>Given Trout’s long recovery from a hand fracture, it was painful for Angels fans to see him get hit in nearly the same spot during his 2025 debut. He was wearing extra protection on his left hand, which likely helped cushion the blow. But any HBP in Chicago during March is going to leave a mark with temperatures in the 40s.</p><p>Despite Trout’s significant injury history over the last four years, there’s reason for optimism in LA this season (aside from the Dodgers). Trout is healthy on Opening Day and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-angels/angels-news-mike-trout-confident-being-best-player-on-field">confident he can return to form</a> as one of the best players in baseball.</p><p>After spending his entire professional career in center field, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-angels/angels-news-mike-trout-gets-real-right-field-debut-spring-training">Angels moved Trout to right</a> this season in an effort to preserve his health. He’s adjusted well to the new position and hopes to make it through the year without an injury setback.</p><p>Unfortunately, Trout and the Angels did not get off to a good start in 2025. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-angels/angels-news-los-angeles-signs-yusei-kikuchi-63-million-contract">LA’s new $63 million pitcher</a> Yusei Kikuchi did his job, keeping the team in the game through six innings. But things fell apart for Los Angeles in the eighth.</p><p>Rookie reliever Ryan Johnson got lit up by the White Sox. Chicago touched Johnson up for five runs on four hits in 1.2 innings. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-angels/angels-news-top-angels-prospect-drops-crazy-message-shockingly-making-roster">Angels promoted Johnson to the Opening Day roster</a> even though he never threw a single pitch in the minors. He was a second-round draft pick in 2024 and jumped straight to the majors.</p><p>Trout survived the plunking but couldn’t get anything going at the plate. It is a question that has become increasingly common in recent seasons. Due to Trout’s injury trouble, though, the question has remained on the back-burner during past trade deadlines. MLB insider Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6232629/2025/03/27/mlb-season-storylines-opening-day-2025/" rel="noopener">recently detailed</a> a potential scenario in which Trout trade rumors could heat up once again.</p><p>“If Trout stays healthy enough to at least force the issue for Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno, the deadline might be even more interesting than usual,” Rosenthal wrote in an article for The Athletic. “Assuming Moreno, who operates according to his own whims, is willing to play along.”</p><p>The last part of Rosenthal’s paragraph is extremely important. MLB fans surely remember the final years of Shohei Ohtani’s Angels career. Although the team continued to struggle, Ohtani established himself as the best player in the sport. The obvious decision was to trade Ohtani before he entered free agency, but the Angels failed to capitalize on the obvious decision.</p><p>Ohtani entered free agency and signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers ahead of the 2024 campaign. The Mike Trout situation is different since the outfielder is past his prime and is under contract through 2030. If Trout plays well and stays healthy through July, though, trading him would make sense for the Halos unless they surprise the MLB world and find themselves in position to compete for a postseason spot.</p><p>However, the Angels have not reached the postseason since 2014. Could that change in 2025? It is possible, but rather unlikely. Assuming the Angels struggle once again, trading Trout would be a respectable decision.</p><p>Yes, the decision may upset fans, as Trout has been the face of the franchise for over a decade. He was once considered to be the best player in the sport. The Angels need to rebuild, though, and trading Trout for promising prospects could make a significant impact in the team’s future.</p><p>It remains to be seen if the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-rumors-why-mike-trout-trade-away-from-angels-now-close-to-impossible">Angels will trade Mike Trout</a>.
