In the ninth inning of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/giants-news-willy-adames-hero-epic-giants-home-debut">Sunday’s 5-4 loss to the San Francisco Giants</a>, Robles made a jaw-dropping grab that immediately sparked concern.</p><p>Sprinting into foul territory in right field, he fully extended over the low railing to rob Patrick Bailey of extra bases. Robles crashed into the netting, flipping over the wall, and landed hard — clearly in pain as he clutched his left shoulder. He was carted off the field moments later, his teammates and trainers rushing to his side. In 2024, he hit .328 for Seattle and went 30-for-31 in stolen base attempts, earning a two-year, $9.75 million extension with a club option through 2027. It was a massive rebound for a player whose career had been sidetracked by injuries during his time with the Nationals.</p><p>“He made all that effort,” center fielder Julio Rodríguez said. “But it was at a high cost. I just noticed he was in pain and called the trainers immediately.”</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/giants-news-justin-verlander-special-silver-lining-home-debut-dud">Giants ended up winning on the next pitch</a> — a walk-off single by Wilmer Flores — but it was Robles’ health that lingered long after the final score.</p><p>Giants right fielder Mike Yastrzemski, familiar with the ballpark’s quirky layout, praised the presence of netting where Robles landed. “Who knows what could have happened?” Yastrzemski said. “It’s one of those things where you hope he’s OK. However, expectations remain high for the ball club thanks to the power within the lineup. Outfielder Randy Arozarena aims for big things this season after giving a warning that may send a shiver down the backs of opposing pitchers.</p><p>Although the 30-year-old outfielder’s batting average is below average to begin the season, his power has been on full display. When asked about his approach at the plate, Randy Arozarena made it clear that his goal is to <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/randy-arozarena-breaks-hitless-stretch-with-homer" rel="noopener">go yard as often as possible</a>, according to Mariners writer Daniel Kramer of MLB.com.</p><p>“I always go up to bat and try to hit that ball as hard as I can,” Arozarena said through an interpreter. “Sometimes the field can play against you, but … it doesn’t matter if you play here or anywhere else, I’m just going up with the same approach no matter where I’m playing.”</p><p>Through 16 at-bats so far this season, Randy Arozarena owns a .188 batting average with a .350 OBP. He’s also recorded two home runs and two RBIs off of his three hits. The veteran outfielder aims to make the 2025 season his fifth consecutive year hitting 20 or more homers.</p><p>The 2021 Rookie of the Year began his career with the Tampa Bay Rays. That does not mean there is not something to talk about, however, as a prediction has been made for Ichiro Suzuki to rejoin the team, despite being 51 years old.</p><p>The Athletic <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6231805/2025/03/27/mlb-opening-day-bold-predictions-2025/?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=mlbtw&amp;source=mlbtw" rel="noopener">made a bold prediction for each</a> MLB team ahead of the 2025 season. That was the one made for the Mariners, via Tyler Kepner.</p><p>“Ichiro Suzuki becomes the first player in history to use his Hall of Fame speech to announce his comeback as an active player,” Kepner wrote. “The Mariners add him to the roster and surge to the AL West title.”</p><p>Ichiro has not appeared in an MLB game since retiring as a member of the Mariners following two games they played in Japan to open the 2019 season.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mariners-news-ichiro-suzuki-tears-mariners-jersey-retirement-announcement">Mariners are scheduled to retire Ichiro’s jersey number</a> this season, but the chances of seeing him take the field for Seattle, or any MLB team for that matter, are not particularly high.</p><p>Anything is possible, however. It is not inconceivable that Ichiro simply does not know what else to do with himself and wants to return to the diamond as a result.</p><h2><b>Cal Raleigh believes Mariners can win World Series</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/unnamed-2_159c4b.jpg"><figcaption>Steven Bisig-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>After the Mariners signed catcher Cal Raleigh to a contract extension worth $105 million, he knows what he wants his next accomplishment to be.</p><p>Raleigh believes it is possible for the Mariners to <a href="https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/mariners/why-cal-raleigh-believes-mariners-can-bring-world-series-to-seattle/" rel="noopener">bring home baseball’s most prestigious crown</a>.</p><p>“This place has always felt like home since I arrived here in Seattle. They took me in from day one with kindness and respect and it is one of the top places to play in professional sports,” Raleigh said via the Seattle Times.</p><p>“I wanted to stay here because of the connection with the people of the Pacific Northwest and the Seattle Mariners, but I know it doesn’t always work out the way you want it to. I feel blessed that the Mariners gave me this opportunity and I can’t think of a better place in MLB to call home. He is also a professor of sociology.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">MLB</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Four days after being <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-news-seattle-ex-all-star-owed-15-5-million-2025">cut by the Seattle Mariners</a>, all-star relief pitcher Drew Pomeranz was <a href="https://x.com/JonHeyman/status/1905304237359128655" rel="noopener">re-signed to a minor league contract</a>, per baseball columnist Jon Heyman.</p><p>This comes as the Mariners begin their season against the Athletics on Thursday.</p><p>In the offseason, Pomeranz and the Mariners agreed to a minor league deal, but he requested to be released after not making the Opening Day roster. He has been in the league since 2011 and made the All-Star Game in 2016.</p><p>Pomeranz hasn’t pitched in a major league game since 2021 due to a string of injuries.</p><p>He has shown promise in spring training with 10 strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings pitched in the Cactus League.</p><p>Pomeranz had previously pitched for the Colorado Rockies, San Diego Padres, Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants, Milwaukee Brewers, and Los Angeles Angels. In 2024, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-angels/angels-news-la-contract-all-star-drew-pomeranz">Pomeranz signed a minor league deal with the Angels</a> with the hope that he would become an asset in their bullpen.</p><p>Injuries have beset him and left him toiling in the league.</p><h2><b>What Drew Pomeranz can bring to Mariners</b></h2><p>Pomeranz comes with plenty of risks in terms of his health, and being 36 years old.</p><p>However, he does possess over a decade of experience. He could provide the type of relief the Mariners needed to offset their two other lefty relievers, Tayler Saucedo and Gabe Speier, in case they get injured.</p><p>That is, of course, if he remains healthy. If Pomeranz can stay healthy, he has shown that he could get solid innings under his belt, throwing a four-steam fastball between 90-94 mph. He can also get his knuckle curveball up to 82 mph.</p><p>Pomeranz currently has a record of 48-58 with a 3.91 ERA.</p><p>He is expected to report to Triple-A Tacoma, whose season begins on Friday.</p><p>If he can prove himself in Tacoma, Pomeranz could find his way back up to Seattle. They <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-news-105-million-contract-extension-star-catcher">signed catcher Cal Raleigh to a six-year extension worth $105 million</a>. He was rewarded for his great defensive catching while being one of Seattle’s best hitters. Mariners president Jerry DiPoto <a href="https://marinersblog.mlblogs.com/mariners-extend-cal-raleigh-to-six-year-contract-through-2030-with-vesting-player-option-for-2031-e2045c63b685" rel="noopener">released a statement</a> about Raleigh in the official announcement.</p><p>“Cal is central to so much of what we do as a team,” Dipoto said. “His leadership on the field, combined with elite defense and impact offense, is rare among catchers in the game. We are fortunate that he’s a Mariner and thrilled that he’s here for the long haul.”</p><p>The extension buys out Raleigh’s final two years of arbitration and four years of free agency. When it expires, he will be 35 years old. The Mariners’ park is the hardest to hit in across baseball, but Raleigh has figured it out in his five-year MLB career. He led the team with 34 homers and 100 RBIs, 11 and 38 of which came at home in 2024.</p><p>The Mariners’ big issue last year was offense. Raleigh was the only player with over 70 RBIs and they had the second-lowest team batting average in the league. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-gm-knows-hell-get-roasted-after-breaking-silence-on-do-nothing-offseason">Seattle did not do much to help itself in the offseason</a>, so Raleigh will have to step up.</p><h2><b>The Mariners have the pitching and need the offense</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Cal-Raleigh-with-Seattle-Mariners.jpg"><figcaption>Steven Bisig-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Reports and rumors have been swirling about what exactly is going on in Seattle’s home park. Whether the batter’s eye is crooked or not, Raleigh is not having any issues. Plus, he is leading one of the best rotations in the league that should be back in that category this season on defense.</p><p>The Mariners have talented players around Raleigh, like Julio Rodriguez and Randy Arozarena. But they need to see the best of those players this season to make the playoffs. The Houston Astros will still challenge for the division title and the Texas Rangers’ World Series hangover should be over. Seattle has to step up to compete this season.</p><p>Last year, the Mariners got off to an excellent start and then blew a ten-game division lead faster than any team in history. This year, they need to get off to a solid start and hold the line to reward the significant investment in this core. Otherwise, there could be significant changes.</p><p>The Mariners host the Athletics on Opening Day on Thursday. While a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-rumors-insider-577-million-vladimir-guerrero-jr-prediction">megadeal is still on the table</a>, as the two sides seem motivated to get a deal done, the Blue Jays can’t afford to lose him for nothing. A trade with the Seattle Mariners makes sense if it comes down to that.</p><h2><b>Mariners trade proposal for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. </b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Vladimir-Guerrero-Jr-1.jpg"><figcaption>Nathan Ray Seebeck</figcaption></figure><p><b>Mariners receive: </b>Vladimir Guerrero Jr.</p><p><b>Blue Jays receive: </b>Lazaro Montes (Mariners No. 2 prospect, MLB 42nd), Cole Young (Mariners No. 3, MLB 49th), Ryan Sloan (Mariners No. 8), Luke Raley</p><p>The Mariners are one of the best teams in baseball, but that is predominantly because of their pitching staff. With Logan Gilbert, Luis Castillo, Bryce Miller, Bryan Woo, Emerson Hancock, and George Kirby, Seattle has arguably the deepest rotation in the MLB. They desperately need an impact bat, and they can land one in the form of Guerrero without even sacrificing their pitching depth.</p><p>The Mariners have one of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/top-10-mlb-farm-systems-ahead-of-2025-season">best farm systems in the MLB</a>. They have seven players in MLB.com’s <a href="https://www.mlb.com/milb/prospects" rel="noopener">top 100 prospects list</a>, which is tied for the most in the league. It will certainly take some big-name prospects to get a deal done for a player of Guerrero’s caliber, but losing minor leaguers such as Lazaro Montes and Cole Young would be well worth it for Seattle.</p><p>Guerrero is coming off of his best season since 2021, but it didn’t prevent Blue Jays from finishing last in the American League East. Last year, the first baseman hit 30 home runs while still maintaining a .323 batting average. He is clearly one of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/ranking-50-best-mlb-players-2025-season">best players in baseball,</a> and because he is still only 26 years old, he may not have even reached his fullest potential yet. Guerrero’s best season came at age 22, when he belted 48 home runs.</p><p>Guerrero would take Luke Raley’s spot in this trade. Raley is a solid player, but Guerrero would be a massive upgrade over him, as he’d be the offensive star that the team desperately needs. This move would follow an <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/grading-mariners-rays-blockbuster-randy-arozarena-trade">MLB trade deadline deal last season for Randy Arozarena,</a> and it may finally get the Mariners over the hump.</p><h2><b>Blue Jays can’t risk losing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for nothing</b></h2><p>Trading Guerrero away would not be an easy choice for the Blue Jays, but it might become a necessary one sooner rather than later. The AL East is stacked, and even after a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/mlb-rumors-blue-jays-anthony-santander-4-year-82-million-contract-offer">free agent move for Anthony Santander</a>, the team could still finish last in their division. In that case, a franchise reset and complete rebuild would be more than necessary.</p><p>There would be no better way to kick off a rebuild than to dangle one of the best trade chips in baseball. Guerrero would demand a huge trade haul because he is not only talented but because he is still so young. The Blue Jays don’t seem to be willing to pay the price Guerrero is requesting in contract talks, and they can’t afford to lose him for nothing.</p><p>The Blue Jays could stay afloat with the addition of Raley in this hypothetical trade while also retooling for the future with three of the Mariners’ best prospects. Toronto certainly shouldn’t give Guerrero away for cheap, but if someone like the Mariners comes knocking with a huge trade offer, then the Blue Jays should strongly consider taking it.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

After a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/3-offseason-moves-mariners-make-missing-playoffs">historic collapse in 2024, they need better offense to power through a crowded American League Wild Card</a> race. But an injury to a long-time Seattle stalwart forced a roster move few saw coming. The Mariners cut Mitch Haniger before Opening Day, <a href="https://x.com/RyanDivish/status/1903858611912094151" rel="noopener">ending his second stint</a> with the team. Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times broke the news Sunday.</p><p>“The Mariners have released Mitch Haniger,” Divish wrote in a social media post. “The veteran outfielder/designated hitter hasn’t played since the first week of [March] due to left shoulder soreness. They owe him $15.5 million for this season.”</p><p>Haniger joined the Mariners in 2017 at 26 years old and immediately made an impact. In his first three seasons in the Pacific Northwest, he racked up 57 homers and 172 RBIs while posting a 129 OPS+. He opted out of the 2020 season and had his first 100 RBI season in 2021. But it has been downhill since, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mariners-news-mitch-hanigers-heartfelt-message-to-seattle-after-signing-with-giants">including a one-year stint with the San Francisco Giants</a> where he only played 61 games.</p><p>With poor numbers and lingering injuries on his resume, the Mariners cut Haniger. They have to pay him $15.5 million this year but the relationship is over. He is now a free agent and can sign anywhere.</p><p>The Mariners <a href="https://x.com/JonHeyman/status/1903895749068231145" rel="noopener">also cut a pitcher</a> on Sunday. Drew Pomeranz has not played in the majors since 2021 but joined the Mariners for spring training. New York Post insider Jon Heyman posted, “Drew Pomeranz has been granted his release by Mariners and is available for teams needing LH reliever. 10 K in 7 2/3 IP this spring. Fastball sat 91-94 with 92.0 avg.”</p><p>Even though the Mariners needed help this offseason, they did not add much. Their trade deadline acquisition Randy Arozarena must step up and help lift the offense to a playoff level. The Mariners later confirmed that Robles would undergo an X-ray, with additional tests possible depending on the results.</p><p>Manager Dan Wilson <a href="https://x.com/RyanDivish/status/1903581304270287317" rel="noopener">offered a cautiously optimistic update</a> after the game.<br>“They’re going to get it checked out today,” Wilson said. “Hopefully he’s in good shape. The 27-year-old was hit by 11 pitches last season, with 10 coming after he joined Seattle in June. Several of those plunkings were in the hand or wrist area and caused him to miss time, though he never landed on the injured list.</p><p>Despite the bumps and bruises, Robles was one of the Mariners’ most valuable players down the stretch in 2024. After being released by the Nationals, he signed with Seattle and quickly established himself in an everyday role, eventually earning a two-year, $9.75 million extension in mid-August. In 91 games with the M’s, Robles slashed .328/.393/.467 with an .860 OPS and was worth 3.1 WAR, according to FanGraphs.</p><p>This spring, he had continued that strong form, entering Saturday’s contest with an .836 OPS and three home runs in 53 at-bats. His energy and production have stood out in camp.</p><p>“He brings a lot of life to this ballclub,” Wilson said earlier on Saturday, before the injury scare.</p><p>With Opening Day set for Thursday against the Oakland A’s, the Mariners and their fans will be anxiously awaiting Robles’ test results. He is slated to start in right field and bat leadoff, forming a dynamic outfield trio with Julio Rodríguez and Randy Arozarena. The Mariners revealed two different jersey sleeves. The home jersey contains the standard Nintendo logo, while the away jersey features the logo for the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 Console. We’ll see the Mariners take to the field with the logo on Opening Day, March 27th.</p><p>Mariners’ Center Fielder Julio Rodriguez will serve as brand ambassador. The young superstar makes for a great candidate, as he’s been playing extremely well since entering the league. In 1992, Nintendo’s President at the time (Hiroshi Yamauchi), purchased the Mariners to prevent the team’s relocation. The team maintained a stake for three years after Yamauchi’s death, but still keeps a strong relationship with the organization.</p><p>In a post from Nintendo, they wrote about the ongoing relationship between them and the Mariners. The post reads: “We’re thrilled to share we’re expanding our long-standing relationship with the Mariners and will be featured on their jersey sleeve this season! See it for the first time on Opening Day, March 27th!”</p><p>It’s actually an excellent idea to use the Switch 2 Logo on the away jersey, too. Overall, that Logo will travel the country, and millions will see it over the course of the season.</p><p>Nintendo revealed the <a href="https://www.nintendo.com/successor/en-us/index.html?srsltid=AfmBOopI0MBPlxwmtdDdNVkua8IXxSCbJh8FoJ3y25-ye1qZ-51fciFf" rel="noopener">Switch 2</a> earlier this year, along with a new Mario Kart title. Many fans acknowledge the Los Angeles Dodgers, Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves for constantly vying for championships and clinching one divisional title after another. Despite being under constant scrutiny, the New York Yankees deserve their due for compiling 32 straight winning seasons. The Milwaukee Brewers, Tampa Bay Rays and Cleveland Guardians all get a nod for making the most of their modest payrolls. But what about the Seattle Mariners?</p><p>The M’s are the pillar of consistency that gets little fan fare. They have won 85-plus games in four consecutive years and accomplished the feat six times in the last decade. But this franchise does not get the respect that the perennial big-market contenders do, nor is it extended the same sympathy that the low-payroll ballclubs receive. Instead, Seattle has become a punchline.</p><p>It contains the foundation of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-news-julio-rodriguez-dangerous-warning-mlb-teams-2025">what should be a proud organization</a> but lacks the accolades and reputation to secure that label. The Mariners have a marketable star in Julio Rodriguez, a first-rate pitching rotation and one of the more highly regarded ballparks in MLB. And yet, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-news-jeff-passan-accuses-seattle-blowing-best-opportunities-mlb">ownership is failing to capitalize on its advantages</a>. Fans are both flummoxed and frustrated by the direction the team has been heading toward in the last couple of years.</p><p>John W. Stanton is not investing in a sufficient lineup, and president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto has been <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-gm-knows-hell-get-roasted-after-breaking-silence-on-do-nothing-offseason">unable to piece together a championship-caliber roster</a> via the trade market. Narrowly missing the playoffs the last two years and in 2021 is the cruel byproduct of this ill-advised organizational philosophy.</p><p>Sure, other fan bases have it worse, but how much longer must The Emerald City watch its beloved squad squander its potential? We will see if we can find an answer to that question in our bold predictions for the Mariners’ 2025 season. I promise to lighten up with the gloom and doom.</p><h2><b>Julio Rodriguez finishes in top 3 in AL MVP voting</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Mariners-Julio-Rodriguez-runs-to-first-.jpg"><figcaption>Steven Bisig-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>I told you it would get better. Do not confuse my scathing prelude as an indictment on the star power that emanates through T-Mobile Park on a fairly regular basis. That was directed at the Mariners brass, not their talent. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-news-kevin-durant-julio-rodriguez-kd-of-baseball">Rodriguez specifically commands ample attention</a>.</p><p>Yes, the 24-year-old center fielder can certainly be held accountable for a fairly underwhelming individual campaign in 2024, but even in a down year, which included a .273/.325/.409/.734 slash line, he still posted a 4.3 WAR season. Based on the numbers Rodriguez produced in his first two seasons, I am guessing last year’s output is close to his floor. That means a resurgence is on the table for 2025.</p><p>Considering he played plus-defense in one of the most important positions in the sport, the two-time All-Star can realistically vault  himself into the American League MVP conversation by belting around 35 home runs while slugging .480-500 and stealing around 30 bases. He has already accomplished these things. It is just a matter of putting everything together.</p><p>I realize it sound likes I am simplifying a highly demanding objective, but Rodriguez has the tools to become <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-news-julio-rodriguez-insane-mlb-history-win-over-astros">a special player</a> in this league. He displayed them for extended stretches from 2022-23, and did so after slow starts and with minimal protection in the lineup. Assuming pitchers continue to respect catcher Cal Raleigh’s prodigious power (64 homers across the last two years), Julio Rodriguez should see decent pitches.</p><p>I believe he will pounce on them and re-establish himself as one of the future faces of baseball. He will not get his hands on the MVP award quite yet, but the Dominican Republic native will be firmly in the race.</p><h2><b>Mariners ace Logan Gilbert wins AL Cy Young</b></h2><p>Given how we started things off, this is probably not what you expected. Like Mariners fans, I can acknowledge both the glaring flaws and undeniable strengths that scatter throughout the roster. Logan Gilbert certainly falls under the latter category.</p><p>The trusty right-hander <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-news-logan-gilbert-opening-day-luis-castillo">leads a starting pitching rotation</a> that should once again be among the best in baseball, assuming George Kirby overcomes his shoulder inflammation. Regardless, Gilbert is poised to ascend into genuine stardom this upcoming season. He has tallied a sub-3.80 ERA while recording 170-plus strikeouts and 185-plus innings in each of his last three campaigns.</p><p>Last year might have marked his first All-Star Game invitation, but Gilbert has been a force on the mound for a while now. He already boasts elite advanced metrics, posting an MLB-best 0.887 WHIP, a spectacular .196 batting average against and a welcome 4.6 walk percentage in 2024. The 2018 first-round draft pick also totaled 220 Ks and led the big leagues with 208 2/3 innings pitched. He checks nearly all the boxes.</p><p>Though, because his 3.23 ERA fell short of the gold standard, Gilbert earned a sixth-place finish in Cy Young voting. But at almost 28 years of age (birthday in May), this hurler is in position to enjoy his most notable year yet.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-tarik-skubal-blunt-response-throwing-100-mph">Tarik Skubal might continue to mesmerize the masses</a> in his quest for a second consecutive Cy Young award, and Cole Ragans, Garrett Crochet and maybe even fellow Mariners righty George Kirby should all be in the hunt for the prize as well. However, the signs and statistics are pointing in Logan Gilbert’s favor.</p><p>Just to be safe, though, Seattle’s lineup should do its part to ensure that its ace wins more than nine games. Fittingly enough, that brings me to my final prediction. Here is where the tone switches back to one of disappointment.</p><h2><b>The M’s fall short of October yet again, this time leading to major changes</b></h2><p>When considering how the last couple of years have unfolded, the first part of this prediction does not seem so bold. It would definitely be unacceptable, though. The reigning AL champion Yankees’ rotation is severely diminished <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-max-frieds-honest-reaction-devastating-gerrit-cole-injury-update">with Gerrit Cole undergoing Tommy John surgery</a> and Luis Gil out for approximately three months with a lat strain. The Baltimore Orioles lost Corbin Burnes. And the Astros no longer have Kyle Tucker or Alex Bregman, leaving the AL West in a state of uncertainty.</p><p>This should be where I say the Mariners will swoop in and seize the pennant for the first time in franchise history. But I cannot do that. You could argue I am a bit reluctant to place faith in this ballclub after predicting it to win the division in 2023 and thoroughly explaining why it could win the World Series. I won’t put that on the M’s, as it was always overly optimistic. Though, my terrible miscalculation has enabled me to spot this team’s weaknesses more easily.</p><p>And it appears that they still exist. Jerry Dipoto did not add the impactful bat fans were hoping for this past winter. Following some of last offseason’s misfires, the longtime executive played it <a href="https://x.com/TalkinBaseball_/status/1889751501892968644" rel="noopener">far more passively</a> this time around. Such a player should not be your biggest addition, especially after an unsatisfactory outcome. But that’s just it. These solid yet ultimately unsuccessful records are not treated with the exasperation they deserve. I believe that will change if Seattle misses the playoffs in a similarly agonizing fashion in 2025.</p><p>And that is something that is likely hard for people to wrap their heads around. The organization has stayed stuck in its ways for the least half-decade, so who is to say it will have an epiphany? I hear you, but management can only withstand so much ridicule and rage from the fans. Just look at the Boston Red Sox. They flipped the switch. And I think Seattle will too, after another bitterly disappointing finish.</p><p>The Mariners finished in the bottom-third of the most important offensive categories last season, accumulating a batting average that was only three points better than the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/chicago-white-sox/worst-mlb-teams-history-white-sox-record-breaking-season">historically abysmal Chicago White Sox</a>. The lineup should improve with Julio Rodriguez, Cal Raleigh and Randy Arozarena all hitting near the top of it for a full season, but it still does not inspire a ton of optimism.</p><p>If Gilbert claims the Cy Young and Rodriguez competes for the MVP like I predict, another October-less campaign will be impossible for management to stomach. Action will subsequently be taken. Hence, there could actually be a ray of light beaming through the impending clouds. And then, the 2026 Mariners bold predictions will be what fans deserve.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Manager Dan Wilson announced that Gilbert would take the mound against the Oakland Athletics on March 27 at T-Mobile Park.</p><p>The decision came as a slight surprise, as three-time All-Star Luis Castillo had started the season for Seattle the past two years. However, Castillo fully embraced the choice, <a href="https://x.com/DKramer_/status/1901027607342444782" rel="noopener">celebrating his teammate’s achievement.</a></p><p>“I’m super happy for him,” Castillo said. “When [Dan Wilson] pulled me in and told me that he was going to give it to him, I was happy because I’ve had three or four Opening Days and this is his first one.”</p><p>Gilbert, now entering his fifth season in the majors, has been one of the most consistent arms in Seattle’s rotation. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mariners-news-logan-gilbert-all-star-revelation-parents-unbelievably-heartwarming">He earned his first All-Star nod in 2024</a> and was named the Mariners’ Most Valuable Pitcher by the Seattle chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.</p><h2><b>Logan Gilbert earns the Opening Day nod for the Mariners after emerging as their ace</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Logan-Gilbert.jpg"><figcaption>Rick Scuteri-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Last season, he posted career-best numbers in multiple categories, leading the American League in innings pitched (208 2/3) and WHIP (0.89). His 3.23 ERA, 220 strikeouts, and 22 quality starts solidified his role as the Mariners’ ace.</p><p>“I was super excited, obviously,” Gilbert said. “A little caught off guard because I didn’t want to expect it, of course, with Luis being the veteran guy. And I thought he’s completely deserving. We have a bunch of guys on our staff that could be Opening Day starters. But when [Wilson] told me, I was excited, a little caught off guard all at the same time. But it’s something you always dream of. It’s a really big deal, so I don’t take it lightly.”</p><p>Gilbert’s rise to the top of the rotation has been aided by Castillo, who was acquired from the Cincinnati Reds in 2022. The veteran right-hander has been a mentor to Gilbert, helping him refine his game and embrace his potential.</p><p>“He’s helped me a ton,” Gilbert said. “It’s great to have his presence, and he just keeps it loose. Awesome teammate, that kind of stuff. But he really has kind of put his arm around me at times and helped me and steered me in the right direction. If something’s off track, if I’m overthinking, whatever it may be, he’s very good at just being himself. And he’s helped me kind of lean into that, as well.”</p><p>When Wilson informed both pitchers of the decision, Castillo’s reaction was nothing but supportive.</p><p>“When Dan told me, for like five seconds, probably, I don’t think a word came out,” Gilbert said. “I was just, like, taking it in. And Luis was like, ‘Say something!’ He was super excited for me and giving me hugs and all this kind of stuff. That’s just the kind of guy he is behind closed doors. He’s the exact same thing that you see on the field.”</p><p>“I think back to high school and college, and it felt like a holiday on Opening Day,” he said. “It’s the first game of the year, all the best pitchers are out there. To me, it felt like the world stopped for that day, and everybody just had their TV on and watched the best pitchers in the game go at it. So, it feels like a holiday. It always has for me. And I’m sure it will again this year.”</p><p>Gilbert will be the first Opening Day starter drafted and developed by the Mariners since Félix Hernández in 2018.
