He left Saturday’s contest with back spasms, after colliding into the outfield fence.</p><p>Springer did go on and play in the game Sunday. He acted as a pinch runner later <a href="https://x.com/ShiDavidi/status/1908972142256857124" rel="noopener">and stole a base</a>, per Sportsnet. That’s certainly good news for Blue Jays fans.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/blue-jays-news-john-schneider-cryptic-take-leadoff-spot-george-springer-declines">Springer is a four-time All-Star who is having a strong start</a> to the campaign. Heading into Sunday, the outfielder is hitting at a .379 batting average. Springer blasted one home run on the season, while driving in five runs.</p><p>Toronto is 5-5 on the year. The team lost 2-1 to the Mets on Sunday.</p><h2><b>Blue Jays are fighting to get back to the postseason</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Nick-Gordon-scores-a-run.jpg"><figcaption>Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/blue-jays-news-max-scherzer-latest-injury-move-means">The Blue Jays worked hard this offseason to pick up some players</a> in free agency. Toronto inked a deal with veteran pitcher Max Scherzer, as well as talented outfielder Anthony Santander. This was in response to the year before, when <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/dodgers-news-shohei-ohtani-reacts-booed-blue-jays-fans">the Blue Jays missed out on the Shohei Ohtani sweepstakes</a>.</p><p>The goal with these additions is to get back to the postseason. Toronto had a disappointing 2024 campaign, where they finished 74-88. Toronto also got passed up by Baltimore and the New York Yankees in the American League East standings.</p><p>So far, there are mixed results. Scherzer is batting an injury, and has spent time on the injured list. He is dealing with soreness in his thumb.</p><p>Santander, meanwhile, has yet to show the power he had last season with the Orioles. This year, Santander is still looking for his first home run on the campaign. He also has just one run batted in through the team’s first 10 games.</p><p>Blue Jays fans want the team to do better than what they have shown. Toronto has plenty of talent with Bo Bichette, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Santander and Springer.</p><p>Springer won a World Series during his time with the Houston Astros. However, that does not appear to be the case after all.</p><p>Despite the initial comment and subsequent statements <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2025/04/06/mathew-bowyer-gambling-ippei-mizuhara-sentencing/82955010007/" rel="noopener">that he and the</a> team had never been particularly close on a number, it seems as if <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/mlb-rumors-blue-jays-closing-in-vladimir-guerrero-jr-contract-extension">Guerrero will put his name on the dotted line soon</a>.</p><p>“While there was a rash of extensions this past week, no extension is more widely anticipated than the $500 million contract that Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is expected to receive, perhaps this week,” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale wrote.</p><p>“Despite Guerrero’s spring-training deadline of the start of spring training, the Blue Jays and Guerrero’s representatives continue to negotiate, exchanging figures and are expected to reach a resolution any day.”</p><p>Nightengale wrote that the deal would keep Guerrero with the Blue Jays for “at least” 14 years, which tracks with previous reports during spring training that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-rumors-vladimir-guerrero-jr-inches-closer-500-million-contract-extension">Guerrero was seeking a deal worth about $500 million over 14 years</a>. If Guerrero were, indeed, to sign that contract, it would become the third-largest deal in MLB history in terms of total money, the second-longest contract in MLB history, and it would put Guerrero among the top 10 highest-paid players in MLB in terms of average salary.</p><p>A year after Shohei Ohtani signed a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-gm-sounds-off-juan-soto-deals-impact-vladimir-guerrero-jr">Juan Soto was at the center of a bidding war</a>, reportedly between the New York Yankees, New York Mets, and Boston Red Sox. Ultimately, Soto inked the single largest contract in sports history; his 15-year, $765 million deal is both the longest and largest in total value ever.</p><p>Guerrero never really had a chance to get nearly that much money, but he is still worth a lot. Over the past four seasons, Guerrero has hit 136 home runs and drove in 405 runs, and, in the process, become a four-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger winner. Additionally, he won a Gold Glove in 2022.</p><p>Guerrero has had a relatively slow start to the 2025 season, evident by his batting splits (.286 AVG / .350 OBP / .371 SLG). I don’t know anything at this point.”</p><p>That hasn’t stopped social media buzz, especially after Guerrero was spotted chatting pregame with Mets stars Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso, as well as Juan Soto. The interactions, shared by SNY’s social media, triggered plenty of wild speculation.</p><p>“Vladdy is literally BEGGING to be a Met,” one X user joked in a post that quickly went viral. MLB insider Jon Heyman was quick to shut it down: “That is assuredly not what’s happening here,” he wrote. “He has consistently said he wants to stay a Jay.”</p><p>But even if Guerrero wants to remain in Toronto, the reality of business in baseball looms large. He and the Blue Jays failed to reach a deal before his self-imposed February 18 deadline, and with free agency on the horizon, pressure mounts on the organization to get something done.</p><p>Guerrero is still just 26 years old and already a four-time All-Star with two Silver Slugger Awards. When Quinn isn't producing content for CP,  he's writing sports betting predictions for numerous sites across North America.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">MLB</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/blue-jays-rumors-new-vladimir-guerrero-jr-contract-offer-on-table-opening-day">The Toronto Blue Jays failed to sign Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to a contract extension before Opening Day</a>, but it appears they’re nearing an agreement on a new deal.</p><p>An announcement is<a href="https://x.com/hgomez27/status/1908535979138232801" rel="noopener"> reportedly expected</a> in the coming days, via Hector Gomez:</p><p>“According to a person close to Vladimir Guerrero Jr., the Blue Jays could make the official announcement of the extension this weekend.”</p><p>Insider Jon Heyman recently said that the belief is Toronto will sign their slugger to a deal around $500 million across 14-15 years, which will pay him over $30 million per season. Guerrero Jr is set to hit free agency this winter if he remains unsigned. The Blue Jays can’t risk losing their best hitter.</p><p>While he struggled at times for a couple of seasons in 2022 and 2023, Guerrero Jr bounced back in 2024. He slashed .323 with 30 home runs and 103 RBI. The 26-year-old was named an All-Star for the fourth time in his career as well. While Toronto hasn’t had a lot of playoff success with the Guerrero Jr-Bo Bichette duo, there’s no question that keeping one of them, at the very least, is crucial for this franchise moving forward.</p><p>Guerrero Jr is off to a respectable start in 2025, hitting .267 in eight games. He’s yet to go deep, but the infielder will surely find his power stroke sooner rather than later.</p><p>In an interview with ESPN last month,<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/blue-jays-news-vladimir-guerrero-jr-reveals-600-million-contract"> Guerrero Jr revealed he was asking the Blue Jays for near $600 million</a>:</p><p>“It’s much less than Soto. We’re talking about many fewer millions than Soto, more than a hundred million less. … It was the same number of years [as Soto’s contract], but it didn’t reach [$600 million]. The last number we gave them as a counteroffer didn’t reach 600,” Guerrero said.</p><p>“I know the business. I lowered the salary demands a bit, but I also lowered the number of years. … I’m looking for 14 [years]. I would like 14, 15, even 20 if they give them to me, but doing it the right way.”</p><p>It appears he will settle for a new contract in the ballpark of $500 million.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Although rumors of a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/blue-jays-rumors-vladimir-guerrero-jr-inches-closer-500-million-contract-extension">Guerrero-Blue Jays contract extension</a> swirl, the star infielder said he “<a href="https://x.com/jorgecastillo/status/1908290406355198095" rel="noopener">doesn’t know anything</a>” about potential updates on the situation.</p><p>“Well, until now, I don’t know anything,” Guerrero said, via Jorge Castillo of ESPN. “I’ve always tried to talk to my agent and I’ve always left that to my agent. I focus on playing. Until now, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”</p><h2><b>Will Vladimir Guerrero Jr. sign contract extension with Blue Jays?</b></h2><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/blue-jays-news-mark-shapiro-vladimir-guerrero-jr-contract-extension">Blue Jays would seemingly like to get a deal done</a>. Guerrero may be open to an extension, but he could also choose to test free agency. The 26-year-old is in the final season of his contract with Toronto. He will likely receive plenty of attention in free agency if an extension does not come to fruition.</p><p>If the Blue Jays fail to sign Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to an extension, Toronto may consider moving him at the trade deadline. Otherwise they would risk losing him in free agency for almost nothing in return.</p><p>Guerrero is a four-time All-Star. He crushed 30 home runs and recorded a .940 OPS during the 2024 campaign. He has also been extremely durable in recent seasons. In fact, Guerrero has appeared in at least 156 games in each season since 2021.</p><p>Re-signing him in free agency will be difficult once the top teams get involved in the sweepstakes. The Blue Jays’ best chance of keeping Guerrero around for the long-term future is to sign him to an extension as soon as possible.</p><p>As Vladimir Guerrero Jr. said, though, he is strictly focused on baseball at the moment. Andres Gimenez is leading the offense in their 5-2 start, and the pitching has been solid. Another offseason acquisition is on the shelf, however, after just one start. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-max-scherzer-latest-injury-move-means">Blue Jays have put Max Scherzer on the shelf</a> with a thumb injury. John Schneider<a href="https://x.com/ShiDavidi/status/1908195136816710025" rel="noopener"> revealed the</a> Scherzer recovery plan, ber Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.</p><p>“Max Scherzer (thumb) won’t play catch today, said manager John Schneider. Blue Jays will continue to check with him daily until he’s ready to resume throwing after cortisone shot,” Davidi posted on social media.</p><p>He continued, “Next time up for that rotation spot isn’t locked in yet, said Schneider. Blue Jays will see how bullpen plays out in coming days — especially Yariel Rodriguez — before making call.”</p><p>Scherzer only lasted three innings in his first start against the Baltimore Orioles. After allowing three hits and two runs, they pulled him from that start. Chris Bassit, Kevin Guasman, Bowden Francis, and Easton Lucas were all spectacular in their starts. This injury takes out the opportunity for Scherzer to start against his former team, the New York Mets.</p><p>If Scherzer is out long-term, who should the Blue Jays lean on to get through the first month?</p><h2><b>The Blue Jays need better performances from Jose Berrios</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Max-Scherzer-with-Blue-Jays-2.jpg"><figcaption>Dan Hamilton-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Coming out of spring training, the Blue Jays decided Jose Berrios was their Opening Day starter. It was a home game against their division rival Baltimore Orioles, so a good start would set the tone. Berrios got smoked, giving up six runs in five innings in a 12-2 loss. He bounced back well against a sputtering Nationals team, which can hopefully get him back on track.</p><p>Scherzer was brought in on a one-year deal, partially in response to a poor Blue Jays offseason. They submitted offers for Roki Sasaki, Corbin Burnes, and Juan Soto and struck out. Despite those disappointments, they did get Scherzer and DH Anthony Santander. At 40 years old, Scherzer is not a long-term solution in the rotation. Berrios should be their ace now and moving forward.</p><p>The Blue Jays are having trouble getting big-name free agents to join their team despite offering competitive contracts. That <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-rumors-vladimir-guerrero-jr-inches-closer-500-million-contract-extension">could cost them their homegrown star Vladimir Guerrero Jr</a> this offseason. There is a long way to go until a proper evaluation can be conducted in that regard, but the organization is already receiving an unexpected slugging surge in the form of Andres Gimenez.</p><p>He is posting a .333/.455/.944/.1.399 slash line in this minuscule sample size, providing valuable pop behind fellow <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-finally-strike-with-anthony-santander-agreement-after-major-whiffs">newcomer Anthony Santander</a> in manager John Schneider’s lineup. One of the biggest additions that they made in the offseason in order to do that was the move to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/blue-jays-news-toronto-adds-max-scherzer-rotation-free-agency">bring in starting pitcher Max Scherzer</a> on a one-year contract in free agency.</p><p>Scherzer’s debut with the Blue Jays didn’t go according to plan. The three-time Cy Young Award winner pitched just three innings against the Baltimore Orioles before leaving the game due to lat soreness. Now, Scherzer has been placed on the <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/44466911/max-scherzer-goes-il-says-wait-thumb-100" rel="noopener">15-day injured list</a> with right thumb inflammation, according to the associated press via ESPN.</p><p>As it turns out, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/blue-jays-news-blue-jays-max-scherzer-drops-concerning-injury-update">Scherzer’s lingering thumb injury</a> that will keep the 40-year-old out of the lineup is related to the lat injury that ended his first start early.</p><p>“Following Saturday’s 9-5 loss to the Baltimore Orioles, the 40-year-old Scherzer said his lat soreness was directly related to lingering thumb pain that forced him to push back a spring training start earlier this month,” the AP wrote. “Calling himself ‘frustrated,’ Scherzer said solving the thumb issue is his top priority.</p><p>“‘This thumb is absolutely critical to your arm health,’ he said after Saturday’s game. ‘I’ve got to get this 100% before I pitch again.'”</p><p>The Blue Jays will cap off a four-game set with the Orioles on Sunday seeking a win to get the split in front of their home fans. Toronto was able to get the win in Game 2 of the series thanks to a strong start from Kevin Gausman, but the Orioles dominated the other two contests.</p><p>Now, the Blue Jays will need continued success from Gausman and the other members of the pitching staff while Scherzer is out. But as it turns out, the root of the issue goes deeper. Scherzer told reporters the soreness was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/blue-jays-news-blue-jays-max-scherzer-breaks-down-frustrating-thumb-injury">directly linked to the thumb problem that plagued him during Spring Training.</a></p><p>“Max Scherzer says lat soreness he experienced ‘is 100% related to the thumb,’” Shi Davidi reported on X. “Felt discomfort in warmups but tried to fight through it to save bullpen. Still, Scherzer appeared to settle in afterward, retiring six straight at one point before departing.</p><p>Toronto manager John Schneider said Scherzer mentioned the discomfort during warmups but tried to push through it. “Frustrated is a good way to put it,” Schneider said.</p><p>The Blue Jays held a 4-2 lead when Scherzer exited, but things quickly unraveled. The Orioles took full advantage of Toronto’s bullpen, scoring six runs over the next two innings and cruising to a 9-5 win.</p><p>Scherzer’s thumb had been an issue throughout camp and was believed to stem from a nerve-related problem that also limited him late last season with the Rangers. He missed time in Texas due to shoulder concerns and was already considered a health risk entering 2025. The thumb, Scherzer emphasized, is a key concern for overall arm health.</p><p>“The thumb is absolutely critical to your arm health,” he said. “I’ve got to get this 100% before I pitch again.”</p><p>Scherzer signed a one-year, $15.5 million deal with the Blue Jays in January, one of the offseason’s splashiest moves. But now, his status moving forward is uncertain. A trip to the injured list hasn’t been confirmed, but it seems increasingly likely.
