But what had the clubhouse buzzing wasn’t just the win — it was Andrew McCutchen’s new necklace, which some players joked might’ve sparked the offensive surge.</p><p>Skenes commented on McCutchen’s <a href="https://x.com/JMackeyPG/status/1911970053697786242" rel="noopener">impact for the</a> Pirates after the game stating, “That’s the blueprint. The duo became the first pitcher-catcher battery in MLB history made up of former No. 1 overall draft picks. Skenes, selected first in 2023, gave up just two runs — one earned — and struck out six over six strong innings to help snap the Pirates’ three-game skid.</p><p>The Pirates (6-11) jumped to an early lead when Ke’Bryan Hayes singled in Andrew McCutchen in the first inning. Two innings later, Bryan Reynolds drove in an RBI single following an Oneil Cruz double, pushing the lead to 2-0.</p><h2><b>Paul Skenes bouncing back</b></h2><p>The 22-year-old <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/cardinals-news-bash-paul-skenes-career-worst-start">Skenes, who struggled with a career-worst five runs allowed in a loss to the St. Louis Cardinals</a> last week had little trouble against the Nationals. His only real challenge came from Pittsburgh’s defense, including his own. Skenes committed two errors on errant pickoff attempts, the second of which allowed an unearned run in the sixth inning.</p><p>By then, the Pirates had surged to a comfortable lead, a refreshing change after a rough start to the season filled with mistakes both on and off the field. Oneil Cruz sparked the offense with two hits and two runs scored while batting leadoff.</p><p>Enmanuel Valdez and Ke’Bryan Hayes each knocked in three runs, and Bryan Reynolds drove in two. Jackson Rutledge recalled from AAA,” Zuckerman wrote on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/nationals-news-washington-pitching-rotation-braves-mike-soroka">Soroka signed with the Nationals</a> this past offseason. He was hoping to get back on track in Washington. Injuries and underperformance have unfortunately limited Soroka in recent seasons. The 27-year-old was once regarded as a future superstar.</p><h2><b>Michael Soroka trying to bounce back with Nationals</b></h2><p>Soroka made his MLB debut with the Braves in 2018, but he was technically not a rookie until 2019. He not only finished second in National League Rookie of the Year voting for the ’19 campaign, Soroka finished sixth in NL Cy Young voting. The Braves right-handed hurler recorded a strong 2.68 ERA in 20 games pitched.</p><p>In the shortened 2020 season, Soroka pitched to a 3.95 ERA in three appearances. He would not pitch in 2021 or 2022 due to injuries, however.</p><p>He was once again limited in 2023 before <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/white-sox-news-why-michael-soroka-giddy-join-chicago-after-braves-trade">landing with the Chicago White Sox</a> in 2024. Soroka was able to pitch in 25 games, but made only nine starts and finished the year with a lackluster 4.74 ERA. Still, the Nationals clearly believed in him as evidenced by their decision to sign him during the offseason.</p><p>Soroka has made just one start for Washington in 2025. In the outing, he allowed four runs over five innings. Now, the former All-Star is headed to the injured list. It remains to be seen when he will return from the injury.</p><p>Could he still bounce back with the Nationals? Absolutely, but he will need to find a way to stay healthy. If Soroka can avoid injury trouble, perhaps he can make a positive impact with Washington during the ’25 campaign.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Though, there is at least one other talent who has the ability to force his way into that conversation.</p><p>On Opening Day, MacKenzie Gore looked like the budding ace the Nats hoped they were getting when they completed the aforementioned deal with the Padres. The left-handed <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/washington-nationals/nationals-news-how-nationals-mackenzie-gore-bob-gibson-mlb-history-opening-day">starting pitcher was masterful</a> in a 7-3 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies, allowing only a Kyle Schwarber single and striking out a whopping 13 batters in six shutout innings.</p><p>Gore has flashed high upside in the past but has been unable to fully break out to this point of his young career. Former players and current MLB Network analysts Mark DeRosa and Chris Young explain why the <a href="https://x.com/MLBNetwork/status/1905696138973638665" rel="noopener">2024 season could be different</a> for him.</p><p>The No. 3 pick in the 2017 MLB Draft attacked Philly southpaw batters with his slider, utilizing it at a 51.1 percent rate on Thursday afternoon. Perhaps Gore is hoping that such an adjustment could launch him into stardom and help the Nationals markedly improve in 2025. If he can effectively lean on his slider throughout the campaign, then DeRosa thinks trouble awaits opposing hitters. “Lefties have absolutely zero chance,” he said.</p><p>MacKenzie Gore is 21-26 with a 4.14 ERA and 417 strikeouts in 378 2/3 career innings pitched. He posted his best season yet in 2024 (3.90 ERA, 181 strikeouts), but control remains an issue. If the 26-year-old can continue to cut down on the walks, of which he threw none versus the Phillies, then he could morph into an upper-echelon starter in the National League.</p><p>That is a high bar to set, but that is what Washington is asking of him as the club attempts to make a jump in the standings this season. What followed was not just a breakout performance—it was a historic one.</p><p>In his first career Opening Day start, the 26-year-old left-hander <a href="https://x.com/MistrettaMLB/status/1905382895851614386" rel="noopener">delivered a masterpiece</a>, striking out 13 batters over six shutout innings while allowing just one hit and no walks in the Washington Nationals’ 7-3 extra-innings loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.</p><p>Despite the final score, Gore’s outing was one for the history books. According to MLB and Sarah Langs, Gore joined Hall of Famer Bob Gibson (1967) and J.R. Richard (1980) as the only pitchers since 1900 to strike out 13 batters with no walks on Opening Day. He’s also the only one of the trio to allow just one hit and no runs, even if he didn’t go the distance like Gibson or Richard.</p><p>“That was special,” said Nationals manager Dave Martinez. “To go out there in his first Opening Day start and do what he did was awesome.”</p><h2><b>MacKenzie Gore shines for the Nationals on Opening Day</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Mackenzie-Gore.jpg"><figcaption>Reggie Hildred-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Gore’s 13 strikeouts also broke the Nationals’ franchise record for punchouts on Opening Day, previously held by Max Scherzer, who struck out 12 against the Mets in 2019. The dominant outing marked a new career high for Gore, who had reached double-digit strikeouts just seven times before.</p><p>“I really don’t even know how to describe the feeling,” Gore said postgame. “But it was cool, so it was a lot of fun. A lot of fun.”</p><p>Gore’s performance was a showcase of pure dominance. Facing the minimum 18 batters over six innings, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/phillies-news-kyle-schwarber-swing-adjustments-2025-season">the only blemish on his line was a fourth-inning single by Kyle Schwarber</a>, who was promptly caught stealing. Gore threw 93 pitches—66 for strikes—and struck out five consecutive Phillies at one point, including Bryce Harper and J.T. Realmuto twice each.</p><p>“He was doing everything,” catcher Keibert Ruiz said. “[He was] getting ahead, putting good pitches to get away and making pitches when he needed to. He was ready.”</p><p>Even Harper tipped his cap after the game. “I thought MacKenzie threw the ball really well—filled up the zone, kept us off balance,” he said. “It was tough for both teams today.”</p><p>Gore’s pitch mix included a steady dose of four-seam fastballs (44%), averaging 95.8 mph and topping out at 98, along with sliders, curveballs, changeups, and a few cutters to keep hitters guessing.</p><p>Though Gore exited with a 1-0 lead following a solo home run by Ruiz in the fifth, the Nationals’ bullpen couldn’t hold it. You can put Washington Nationals reliever Brad Lord in that category.</p><p>Lord, a 2022 18th-round pick by the Nationals, officially <a href="https://x.com/JeffPassan/status/1904939962878795880" rel="noopener">made the ball club’s Opening Day roster</a> on Wednesday. The 25-year-old spent most of the winter working at Home Depot to make ends meet.</p><p>Via Jeff Passan:</p><p>“From Home Depot to home opener: Washington right-hander Brad Lord, who worked at the home-improvement store moving mulch and Christmas trees over the winter, has made the Nationals and will be in the bullpen for Opening Day on Thursday against Philadelphia.”</p><p>While Lord was still a member of the Nationals organization, he wanted to make extra money in the offseason, which resulted in him getting a job at the hardware store. He also worked at Publix the previous year.</p><p>Lord, who played his college ball at the University of South Florida, was dominant in the minor leagues in 2024. He compiled a 10-4 record and 2.43 ERA across three levels, finishing the year in Triple-A Rochester. Lord had a 3.93 ERA in 12 starts with the Red Wings.</p><p>While he did struggle in spring training with an ERA north of six, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/editorials/washington-nationals-2025-over-under-win-total-prediction-odds-pick">the Nationals</a> clearly saw enough to put him on the Opening Day roster. After all, he did pitch well last season. Yes, he’s been mostly a starter in his professional career, but for the time being, it appears he will be a reliever moving forward with Washington.</p><p>In 52 minor league appearances, Lord owns a 3.15 ERA. Considering how underpaid players are on their road to the show, it stands to reason why Lord wanted a side hustle. But, if he manages to stick in the Majors, the Florida native won’t need to work a 9-5 in the offseason for Home Depot anymore. In the end, the New York Mets landed Soto on a massive <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-mets/mets-news-juan-soto-new-york-agree-million-contract-free-agency">15-year, $765 million contract</a>.</p><p>But in the ninth inning of Thursday’s Grapefruit League matchup against the Washington Nationals, the coveted right fielder was just a proud sibling rooting for his kid brother.</p><p>Thursday marked the <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/juan-soto-elian-soto-play-in-same-spring-training-game" rel="noopener">first time</a> brothers Juan and Elian Soto played in the same Major League spring training game. And it was a big deal for both Sotos. “It’s pretty cool to see him and hear about different thoughts, what people think about his swing and all that kind of stuff… It was cool to see,” Juan said, via Anthony DiComo and Jessica Camerato of MLB.com.</p><h2><b>Mets star Juan Soto worked with brother Elian this offseason</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Juan-Soto.jpg"><figcaption>Jim Rassol-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/washington-nationals/nationals-news-elian-soto-juan-sotos-brother-agrees-to-contract-with-washington">Elian Soto signed a minor league contract</a> with the Nationals in 2023. Now 19, he’s spent the last two years with the organization his brother broke into the majors with in 2018. Elian played in the Florida Complex League last season, where he struggled a bit at the plate.</p><p>This offseason, Juan has been working with his brother and, because the Mets’ and Nationals’ spring training facilities are so close to each other, the Sotos have been living together, per MLB.com.</p><p>Elian discovered he was getting called up for Thursday’s Grapefruit League game on Wednesday and couldn’t hide his excitement. After playing in the same game as his big brother, he was thrilled. “I’ve been looking forward to this moment since I was a kid… And I hope I can do that again,” he said, via MLB.com.</p><p>Juan Soto is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-mets/mets-juan-soto-drops-truth-bomb-on-key-piece-of-15-year-contract-with-new-york">enjoying the security of his long term contract</a> with the Mets. After playing for four different teams in four years, Soto appreciates the comfort of having an MLB home.</p><p>That peace of mind seems to be paying off on the diamond. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-mets/mets-news-juan-soto-smacks-home-run-first-at-bat">Soto homered in his first Mets at bat</a> and he’s stayed hot this spring. The Nationals face off against the Philadelphia Phillies at home on Opening Day. Compare that to the $8.6 million that MLB Trade Rumors <a href="https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2025/01/kyle-finnegan-rumors-free-agent-closer-market-picking-up.html" rel="noopener">projected him to earn</a> in arbitration, had the Nationals chosen to make him an offer.</p><p>Though Finnegan was an All-Star last year, his season went off the rails in the second half. From July 5 to the end of the year, he allowed 18 earned runs over 27.1 innings (5.93 ERA) while batters hit .338 against him.</p><p>Over his last 21 appearances, Finnegan’s batted ball and non-contact numbers both took significant hits. Opposing batters hit .411 on balls in play over that span, while his strikeout rate dropped to 15.7% from 26% earlier in the season. Meanwhile, his walk rate jumped to 9.8%, compared to 8.3% before that.</p><p>Finnegan still managed to 38 saves last year, which is no small feat considering the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/betting/washington-nationals-2025-over-under-win-total-prediction-odds-pick">Nationals only won</a> 71 total games.</p><p>Despite the rough ending, Finnegan still has a track record of success. In five Major League seasons, he has a career 3.56 ERA and 110 ERA+. Those numbers aren’t sparkling for a reliever, but they’re certainly enough to think he can recapture his effectiveness after a rough second half.</p><h2><b>The Nationals continue to retool their bullpen</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Jorge-Lopez.jpg"><figcaption>Jeff Curry-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Nationals finished last season 21st in baseball in bullpen ERA (4.14) and 22nd in bullpen WHIP (1.32). Over the past few weeks, they’ve taken steps to shore things up, even before bringing back Finnegan.</p><p>Just last week, they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/washington-nationals/nationals-news-washington-contract-lucas-sims">signed Lucas Sims to a one-year, $3 million deal</a>. Sims’ 2024 season was the opposite of Finnegan’s. After a horrid start in which he pitched to a 6.35 ERA for the Cincinnati Reds over his first 13 appearances, Sims turned it around. After going to the Red Sox in a trade, he finished the season with a 3.57 ERA in Boston.</p><p>In January, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/washington-nationals/nationals-news-ex-mets-cubs-reliever-agrees-deal-with-washington">Nationals brought in Jorge Lopez</a>, who split 2024 between the New York Mets and Chicago Cubs. Overall, he pitched to a 2.89 ERA, representing a sharp rebound from a woeful 2023. Like Sims, he agreed to a one-year, $3 million contract with Washington.</p><p>Finnegan and the newcomers will join Derek Law and Jose Ferrer as returners set to compete for high-leverage roles in the Washington bullpen. Colin Poche, who comes to the Nationals via the Tampa Bay Rays, could compete for a role as well. Sims has pitched at the MLB level since 2017, previously spending time with the Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds and Boston Red Sox.</p><h2><b>Nationals land reliever Lucas Sims before 2025 MLB season</b></h2><p>Sims made his big league debut during the ’17 campaign with Atlanta. At the time, he served in a versatile role, pitching in 14 total games while starting 10 contests. He has since worked as a full-time reliever for the most part. Sims has started just four games in his career since 2017.</p><p>He joined Cincinnati in 2018 and pitched there until 2024 before heading to Boston to pitch with the Red Sox. Between the Reds and Red Sox in 2024, Sims pitched to a 4.38 ERA across 58 total appearances. He started the season strong in Cincinnati with a 3.57 ERA, but struggled in Boston as evidenced by his 6.43 ERA.</p><p>The Nationals are hoping that the 30-year-old right-handed reliever can bounce back and find his footing in Washington.</p><p>Washington has made an effort to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/washington-nationals/nationals-news-washington-bargain-signing-24-home-run-free-agent">add depth this offseason</a>. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/washington-nationals/nationals-news-ex-mets-cubs-reliever-agrees-deal-with-washington">Nationals have also worked to upgrade the bullpen</a>. The team’s rebuild has been consistent since trading Juan Soto to the San Diego Padres in 2022. Washington is trending in a promising direction with a roster full of young talent.</p><p>The Nationals won 71 total games in 2024. That mark is not anything to write home about, but they displayed signs of potential. Washington features an intriguing core of players. Many of the young players on the team certainly have bright futures at the MLB level.</p><p>This is a Nationals team that is probably still a year or two away from making a serious deep postseason run. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nationals-news-washington-scoops-veteran-infielder-2-million-contract-free-agency">Washington Nationals are one such team that recognizes this</a>, as they managed to add some infield depth to their roster on a bargain-bin deal by signing Paul DeJong.</p><p>An All-Star in 2019, DeJong <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/white-sox-news-chicago-contract-paul-dejong-free-agency">spent the 2024 campaign with the Chicago White Sox</a> and Kansas City Royals. While he continued to struggle to hit for a consistent batting average, finishing the year at a lowly .227, he did hit 24 home runs, which was the most since his aforementioned All-Star campaign. Now, he’s landed with Washington on a <a href="https://x.com/BNightengale/status/1891106745767891171" rel="noopener">one-year, $1 million deal</a> in free agency.</p><p>“Veteran infielder Paul DeJong, who hit 24 HRs last year, agrees to 1 year, $1 million contract with the Washington Nationals,” Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported.</p><h2><b>Nationals secure some value on free agent market with Paul DeJong signing</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Nationals-infielder-Paul-DeJong.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: Peter Aiken-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>DeJong isn’t the player he once was, but he has some positional versatility in the infield, and he proved last year that he’s still got some pop in his bat. He will likely have to compete for the job, but Washington does not have a surefire answer at third base, which would result in DeJong being their Opening Day starter at that spot.</p><p>At $1 million, there’s very little risk with this deal for the Nationals. If DeJong produces at the same rate he did last season, Washington surely would take that given the price tag, but even if he doesn’t, this is such a minimal investment that they could move on from him without any sort of real financial repercussions. Whether or not DeJong wins the third base job remains to be seen, but even if he fills in as a utility infielder for the Nationals, it’s clear that they could have a very good-value signing on their hands here.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He studied journalism and communication at UConn.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">MLB</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Washington D.C.-area sports teams have been <a href="https://www.tmz.com/2025/01/30/washington-nationals-d-c-sports-teams-prayers-crash/" rel="noopener">sending their thoughts and prayers</a> to the people who are believed to have lost their lives in a midair plane crash on Wednesday night.</p><p>The Washington Nationals said in a statement that they were “devastated” by the collision that occurred just above the Potomac River, according to TMZ.</p><p>“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their loved ones,” the Nationals wrote. “We extend deepest gratitude to the heroic first responders who aided in the rescue and recovery mission.”</p><p>The Washington Capitals and Washington Wizards, both owned by Monumental Sports &amp; Entertainment, released a joint statement, saying they are, “deeply saddened by the tragedy.”</p><p>“We extend our thoughts and prayers to the families, loved ones, and all those impacted,” the Capitals and Wizards’ statements said.</p><p>A spokesperson for the Wizards told TMZ that they are planning to honor the victims with a moment of silence before their game against the Los Angeles Lakers in Washington D.C. on Thursday.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/2-best-players-commanders-must-trade-for-in-2025-nfl-offseason">The Washington Commanders released</a> a statement as well.</p><p>“We join all of the DMV in grieving the tremendous loss of life in last night’s horrific accident over the Potomac River,” the Commanders’ statement reads. “Our hearts break for the families of the passengers and crew of American Airlines flight 5342 and the crew of the Army helicopter based out of Davison Army Airfield who tragically perished in the crash. He <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rangers-news-ace-max-scherzer-2025-vow-injury-plagued-season">made just nine starts in a disappointing 2024 season for the Texas Rangers</a> but his results were solid. With just a 3.95 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 43.1 innings, he could be a solid back-end starter this year. His hometown St. Louis Cardinals could use a pitcher, but are they the best fit?</p><p>Scherzer will turn 41 during the 2025 season, making him one of the oldest players in the league. While he had a few down years with the New York Mets and Rangers, he showed last year he still has good innings left. The team that signs him will not get the Nationals or Tigers version of the Hall of Famer. But the pitcher they get can help mentor a young rotation and give you some solid starts throughout the year.</p><p>There are plenty of pitchers available in MLB free agency but none with the pedigree of Max Scherzer. That’s why one of these four teams should sign him before Spring Training.</p><h2><b>The Cardinals sign a local legend in Max Scherzer</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Max-Scherzer-with-Texas-Rangers-1.jpg"><figcaption>Steven Bisig-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Cardinals have openly declared that they are starting a rebuild. They missed the playoffs in each of the last two seasons, lost Paul Goldschmidt in free agency, and<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cardinals-news-nolan-arenado-grabs-attention-4-word-post-amid-trade-rumors"> could trade Nolan Arenado</a>. But they still need players to run out onto the field for the MLB team. And adding a player they can trade at the deadline would be a smart way to handle this season. Bringing Max Scherzer back to his native St Louis could be a great fit.</p><p>Scherzer is not going to be taking innings away from anyone by signing with the Cardinals. They have Erick Fedde, Miles Mikolas, and Steven Matz all reaching free agency in 2026. Add Sonny Gray, who has two years left, and this is a very fickle pitching core. Adding Scherzer while looking to trade one of those pitchers would be a great way to end this offseason.</p><p>Scherzer may not be willing to go to the Cardinals as he looks to win another World Series. But if he dominates in the first half of the season, he would be a big trade deadline target for many teams. Signing in St Louis does not prevent him from reaching October again.</p><h2><b>Another homecoming, this one in Washington</b></h2><p>Max Scherzer signed a free-agent contract with the Washington Nationals before the 2015 season. He signed a seven-year, $210 million contract a lived up to every dollar in his time in the Nation’s Capital. He won two Cy Young Awards, threw two no-hitters, and was key to their 2019 World Series title. Bringing him back as the team is ready to re-enter the playoff discussion would be smart.</p><p>Scherzer is still getting paid by the Nationals, as <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/player/earnings/_/id/5166/max-scherzer" rel="noopener">his contract included deferred salary</a> through 2027, according to Spotrac. So a return to Washington could come with a discount, as they are already paying him. And the risk would be similar to the Cardinals. If they are in the playoff discussion, he would stay in Washington. But the trade deadline could bring another home for Scherzer if they are out of contention.</p><h2><b>Max Scherzer joins the Braves</b></h2><p>The Braves lost one of their great pitchers, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yankees-news-max-fried-ny-agree-8-year-218-million-deal-free-agency">Max Fried, to the New York Yankees in free agency</a>. They revived <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/braves-news-chris-sale-wins-nl-cy-young-award-resurgent-season">Chris Sale’s career last year, which ended in a Cy Young Award</a>, and Spencer Strider is coming back. But the back end of their rotation could use some help and Scherzer could be the guy. This is not a place where he would need to be an ace, but a place where he could make 20 solid starts to secure a playoff spot.</p><p>The Braves saw the Mets add Juan Soto and the Phillies crush them for the division title last season. Even though they had terrible injury luck last year, they need additions to compete in their division. Scherzer could be the guy who puts their rotation over the edge in 2025.</p><h2><b>The Blue Jays finally land a free agent</b></h2><p>This offseason has been defined by the Blue Jays falling short in pursuit of big-name free agents. They did land Anthony Santander, which should help their offense, but their rotation needs help. They traded Yusei Kikuchi for a bevy of prospects at the trade deadline last year and have not replaced him yet. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-blue-jays-interested-in-max-scherzer-after-losing-roki-sasaki-to-dodgers">Scherzer could come north of the border</a> and help them in their American League playoff chase.</p><p>The American League is weaker than the National League, especially after Juan Soto switched back to the NL. With only three 90-win teams last season, there should be plenty of space for a surprising team to sneak in. Scherzer could make the Blue Jays that team by joining them before Spring Training.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
