Cortes skipped talking with media after allowing three home runs on the first three pitches of the game. Cortes was pulled after<a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/44468168/nestor-cortes-yankee-stadium-return-go-way-planned" rel="noopener"> allowing five total home runs</a> in just a few innings of work.</p><p>“It’s not a good feeling,” Cortes said, per ESPN. “So obviously didn’t go the way I planned.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/yankees-news-cody-bellinger-drops-best-admission-aaron-judge-3-hr-game">The Yankees annihilated the Brewers</a>, 20-9, behind nine home runs. Aaron Judge hit three of them, in one of the most memorable performances of his career.</p><p>Cortes played last season for the Yankees. He had high hopes for his return on Saturday.</p><p>“Obviously I spent a few years over there, and I was able to be on their side and not have to face them, but I think this comes with the territory of being a major league pitcher,” Cortes added. “You never know where you’re going to end up and at some point, you’re going to face somebody you know or somebody that’s close to you and it just happened to be yesterday.”</p><p>The Brewers said it was a miscommunication that Cortes didn’t show up to speak with media afterward, per the outlet.</p><h2><b>The Brewers are better than what they have shown in the Yankees series</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Christian-Yelich.jpg"><figcaption>Mark Hoffman/Milwaukee Journal Sentinel / USA TODAY NETWORK</figcaption></figure><p>The Brewers have seen disaster at the start of the 2025 baseball season. Not only has the team gotten crushed on defense, Milwaukee’s bats are not giving them the pop needed to overcome their poor pitching.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/brewers-news-christian-yelich-100-real-teammate-nestor-cortes">Brewers fans have to be stunned</a>. Milwaukee had such an outstanding 2024 season, winning the NL Central. The addition of players like Cortes made many feel as if the club could compete for an NL pennant this year.</p><p>Cortes <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/nestor-cortes-struggles-against-yankees-in-first-brewers-start" rel="noopener">still has the trust</a> of his Brewers teammates, despite his poor showing Saturday.</p><p>“I don’t know how he handled it, but I do know he’s a professional and he’s a damn good pitcher,” Brewers first baseman Jake Bauers said, per MLB.com. “He’s going to bounce back, and he’s going to be solid for us.”</p><p>Even Cortes’ former teammate Yankees slugger Aaron Judge knows that Cortes has more in him.</p><p>“Nestor’s been here for years, one of the best lefty pitchers in the game,” Judge said. “He’s a guy that’s going to go out there, throw strikes, attack you. So we just tried to go out there and be aggressive in our zone. ‘Goldy’ and ‘Belli’ set the table there and got things going. The place was rocking once I walked up there.”</p><p>The Brewers and Yankees are playing again on Sunday. The Yankees gave former teammate Nestor Cortes a rude welcome in his return to New York, running him from the game after just two innings.</p><p>Following the brutal beatdown, Cortes was in no mood <a href="https://x.com/ChrisKirschner/status/1906087992927670374" rel="noopener">to stick around</a> and answer questions about his performance. The new Brewers’ pitcher left Yankee Stadium without meeting with reporters, per The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner on X.</p><p>It’s hard to blame Cortes. In his Brewers debut he allowed eight runs on six hits with five walks and two strikeouts in two innings of work. And, notably, he gave up five home runs to his old team.</p><h2><b>Nestor Cortes has nightmare debut with Brewers</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Nestor-Cortes.jpg"><figcaption>Wendell Cruz-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The outing went bad for Cortes right off the bat. He started the game off by <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-aaron-judge-new-york-home-runs-nestor-cortes">giving up three straight home runs</a> on three consecutive pitches. Paul Goldschmidt hammered a 90 mph four-seam fastball to left center. Then Cody Bellinger deposited another 90 mph fastball over the fence in right center. And finally, reigning MVP Aaron Judge mashed an 88 mph cutter 468 feet to left field.</p><p>Later in the first inning, Austin Wells drilled a two-out homer to left center giving the Yankees a 4-0 lead off four solo dingers. Cortes took the mound in the second hoping to settle down and give the Brewers some innings but he surrendered a three-run shot to Anthony Volpe before finally retiring the side.</p><p>Cortes came back out to start the third inning but after issuing a leadoff walk, he was taken out of the game. He departed with New York up 7-3. But the Yankees were just getting started.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-aaron-judges-3rd-hr-vs-brewers-has-fans-going-wild">Judge had three home runs on the day</a> as he terrorized Brewers’ pitchers, going 4-6 with eight RBI and four runs scored. Jazz Chisholm Jr. joined the home run derby in the third inning and Oswald Peraza went deep in the seventh.</p><p>Cortes spent five seasons with the Yankees, making the All-Star Game in 2022. However, he was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/milwaukee-brewers/brewers-news-milwaukee-gm-eases-nestor-cortes-injury-concerns-devin-williams-trade">traded to the Brewers</a> as part of the package that brought closer Devin Williams to New York this offseason.</p><p>While his debut with Milwaukee was a disaster, he wasn’t the only Brewers pitcher who struggled against the Yankees Saturday. It was a difficult start to Cortes’ Brewers career to say the least.</p><p>The former Yankees left-handed pitcher was clearly still trying to settle into the game. He missed over the heart of the plate on each of his pitches to Goldschmidt, Bellinger and Judge. The Yankees clearly had a plan against Cortes, as they were extremely aggressive in the first inning.</p><p>Sometimes, hitters will take a patient approach and allow pitchers to throw a get-me-over strike, especially in the first inning of contests. That certainly wasn’t the case on Saturday afternoon in New York.</p><h2><b>Ex-Yankees star Nestor Cortes joins Brewers</b></h2><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/brewers-news-christian-yelich-100-real-teammate-nestor-cortes">Brewers are excited to have Cortes</a> on the roster. He earned an All-Star selection in 2022 with the Yankees. Cortes does not feature a fiery fastball by any means, but he often does a tremendous job of keeping hitters off-balance at the plate. The veteran pitched in New York from 2021-2024, however, so the Yankees knew exactly what to expect on Saturday afternoon.</p><p>Nestor Cortes should not be judged too harshly on Saturday’s outing. Sure, it unquestionably did not begin the way he would have liked, but Cortes could bounce back in following starts.</p><p>For now, Cortes will focus on trying to get back on track during Saturday afternoon’s game in hopes of giving the Brewers a chance to come back and make things interesting against the Yankees.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

What would normally be a regular interleague matchup has a bizarre offseason twist. The two teams hooked up on a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/yankees-news-fans-going-crazy-devin-williams-trade">trade that sent Devin Williams to the Yankees</a>. But, not everybody can do that.”</p><p>Cortes will take the hill for the first time with the Brewers on Saturday at Yankee Stadium. When he was introduced with Milwaukee’s pitchers on Opening Day, he got a solid hand from The Bronx faithful. But now, the lineup will face their old friend after an Opening Day victory.</p><p>On Opening Day, the Yankees entered the ninth inning with a 4-1 lead. That brought Williams in for his first appearance as a Bomber against his former team. He struggled, allowing a run and facing the tying run at the plate, but did secure the save. Now, the second member of the trade will toe the slab in the series.</p><h2><b>The Brewers need healthy years from Christian Yelich and Nestor Cortes</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Christian-Yelich-with-Milwaukee-Brewers.jpg"><figcaption>Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Yelich told McCalvy he was grateful that Cortes didn’t dish out any wild windups in his first bullpen against him. It was one of the first times Yelich faced live pitching since July. He <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-rumors-how-christian-yelich-injury-will-impact-brewers-trade-deadline-strategy">left the Brewers’ game against the Cubs on July 23 and never returned</a>. After surgery, he is back in the lineup.</p><p>The Brewers still made the playoffs without Yelich last year but were bounced by the New York Mets. They lost Williams and shortstop Willy Adames from the roster and did not do much to replace them. But that has been the story of the Brewers in recent years, as they can replace talent with young prospects very well.</p><p>But without Adames and Williams, they have taken a step back on paper. In the same offseason, the Cubs made the biggest trade of the winter. Kyle Tucker is in a contract year and should dominate the division from the Windy City. It will be tough for the Brewers to make the playoffs this year, but their development process gives them a chance.</p><p>The Brewers and Yankees restart their series with Cortes on the hill on Saturday.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

But ask ex-Yankee and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/grading-yankees-brewers-devin-williams-trade">current Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Nestor Cortes</a>, and he’ll tell you the series could have just as easily swung the other way.</p><p>And he isn’t wrong. For his part, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-freddie-freeman-game-1-walk-off-grand-slam-nestor-cortes">Cortes regrets one pitch he threw</a> in Game 1 that changed the trajectory of the series. In the bottom of the 10th inning with the Yankees leading by a run and one out away from a win, Freddie Freeman came up against Cortes with the bases loaded. He deposited the first pitch he saw into the seats for a walk-off grand slam.</p><p>That moment <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6156842/2025/02/25/nestor-cortes-brewers-yankees-world-series/" rel="noopener">still haunts</a> Cortes.</p><p>“I hate how it happened,” he said, per Tyler Kepner of The Athletic. “Trust me, I (wasn’t) able to sleep after that just because I replayed it in my head every single time. I guess he was on the right side of the baseball where he hit the home run. But it could have been a popup; it could have been a ground ball; it could have been a fly ball. There were so many outcomes with that pitch.”</p><p>If Freeman had missed that pitch — or if Cortes hit his spot, the Yankees could have won that game. They also should have won Game 5, but a comedy of errors allowed the Dodgers to claw back and take the clinching game.</p><p>“We had done enough to win that game,” the new Brewers starter said of Game 1. “They can talk whatever they want to talk, but we win Game 1 — which we should have — we lost 2 and 3, we win Game 4, and we should have won Game 5. Then we go back to LA up 3 to 2.”</p><h2><b>Brewers see Nestor Cortes as part of championship formula</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Nestor-Cortes.jpg"><figcaption>Rick Scuteri-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Cortes went from New York to Milwaukee in the trade that sent All-Star closer Devin Williams to the Bronx. Now with the Brewers, Cortes hopes to help the team to its <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/milwaukee-brewers/brewers-news-fans-livid-over-mark-attanasio-world-series-job-statement">first-ever World Series championship</a>.</p><p>General manager Matt Arnold believes that Cortes, who had a 3.77 ERA and 1.153 WHIP in the American League East last year, is part of the winning equation.</p><p>“It’s always a combination of things for us,” he said. “Whether it’s present value or future value, we want to try to help the team win a championship, and so we felt like this did a little of both.</p><p>“You can’t replace a guy like Devin Williams, but the ability to get an established starter like Nestor and a young guy like [Caleb] Durbin, who has a chance to impact our infield, is pretty exciting for us.”</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
