Nick Castellanos scored the winning run from second base as Philadelphia got its third straight victory over Atlanta in dramatic fashion.</p><p>But after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/philadelphia-phillies/phillies-news-nick-castellanos-drops-blunt-take-on-being-replaced-in-9th-inning-vs-braves">Castellanos was frustrated</a> with being removed from Friday’s game for a defensive replacement, fans were watching with a critical eye. He moved Max Kepler over to right field so Harrison Bader could play center after the team took a 2-1 lead. He had a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/philadelphia-phillies/phillies-news-nick-castellanos-history-231st-consecutive-start">streak of 231 consecutive games played</a> for the Phillies, the most since Pete Rose in the 1980s. But the 13th-year veteran is also known for being a bit prickly. And his impressive streak of consecutive games ended after he got benched <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/philadelphia-phillies/phillies-news-nick-castellanos-benched-crossing-line-rob-thomson">for ”crossing a line” with Thomson</a>.</p><p>With a new issue to be surly about, fans were naturally paying close attention to the two-time All-Star on Saturday. Castellanos had an uneventful game until the contest went into extra innings.</p><p>The 33-year-old outfielder led off the bottom of the 10th and was immediately hit by a 96 mph Hunter Stratton fastball. He advanced to second on a Bryson Stott single. Then Turner drove in designated runner Brandon Marsh from third and Castellanos beat the throw from right field to score the game-winner from second.</p><p>But after sliding home safely, Castellanos appeared uninterested in celebrating the dramatic win. As his Phillies teammates swarmed the field, Castellanos kept his head down, seemingly ignoring the revelry around him.</p><p>Like Castellanos, Phillies fans were not shy about sharing their thoughts:</p><p><a href="https://x.com/DeeJayChopNJ/status/1961958257250939226" rel="noopener">Jeremy Tramontana</a> wrote:<br>“Saw that. Castellanos has given the Phillies many memorable moments in the postseason, coming up with one huge hit after another. But he’s never been a positive defender, and that was very much confirmed on Friday when manager Rob Thomson pulled him in the ninth inning of their eventual 2-1 win over the Atlanta Braves for a defensive substitution in Harrison Bader.</p><p>The statistics don’t lie; Castellanos doesn’t have a single big-league season in which he’s rated even average in terms of defensive metrics. But still, every baseball player wants to be good at all facets of the game, and it <a href="https://x.com/OnPattison/status/1961613534137114822" rel="noopener">certainly frustrated</a> the Phillies right fielder that the team felt as though they need the more surehanded glove to close out their Friday night win even though he did pull a rabbit out of his hat with an <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/philadelphia-phillies/phillies-news-nick-castellanos-braves-runner-insane-throw">incredible throw to home plate</a> to gun down Matt Olson.</p><p>“Yes, [it is frustrating to be replaced defensively in the ninth],” Castellanos said, per via Tim Kelly of On Pattison.</p><p>There are <a href="https://www.fangraphs.com/players/nick-castellanos/11737/stats?position=3B%2FOF#fielding" rel="noopener">no stats</a> that point to Castellanos being a positive defender in the slightest. For his career, he’s amassed a total of -89 defensive runs saved (DRS) and an ultimate zone rating (UZR) of -62.0. That, suffice to say, is horrific. And it’s not like he’s producing at the plate for the Phillies.</p><p>On Friday, Castellanos went 0-3 with one walk, continuing a season of poor production. On the year, Castellanos has a paltry slash line of .253/.294/.406, and he’s been worth negative WAR, according to Fangraphs.</p><p>Castellanos better watch out; if he continues to complain all while playing poorly, he may not be long for the Phillies’ everyday lineup.</p><h2><b>Phillies fans rag on Nick Castellanos</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Nick-Castellanos-2.jpg"><figcaption>Isaiah J. Phillies fans tolerated this when he was producing. But now that he’s a negative in nearly every aspect of the ball, he’s been drawing the ire of Philadelphia’s passionate fanbase.</p><p>“When he was hitting, his s**tty attitude was tolerable, now it’s wearing thin. This dude is destined to end up a f**king Marlin next year,” X user @swiftonx <a href="https://x.com/swiftonx/status/1961617984583016810" rel="noopener">wrote</a>.</p><p>“That’s quite a reaction from the worst defensive OF in the league who also isn’t helping elsewhere. He should just be thankful he’s playing much at all,” @TheWARmonger_ <a href="https://x.com/TheWARmonger_/status/1961611767999570319" rel="noopener">added</a>.</p><p>“Weak, selfish mentality from a player. Guy is terrible defensively. The Phillies started with a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/philadelphia-phillies/phillies-news-3-home-run-inning-vs-braves">three-homer inning</a> in the first and finished with a franchise record-tying seven bombs. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/philadelphia-phillies/phillies-news-phillies-tie-record-amid-kyle-schwarber-4-hr-night">Kyle Schwarber added four homers</a> on his own in an offensive eruption.</p><p>But following the wild 19-4 victory, Philadelphia found itself in a pitchers’ duel Friday where every run counted. And Castellanos, who got a rest day Thursday, made up for missing the home run derby with a clutch defensive effort.</p><p>With the game tied 1-1 in the top of the fifth, Phillies All-Star starter Ranger Suarez got into a jam. The Braves had runners on first and third with one out and Marcell Ozuna at the plate. Atlanta’s DH ripped an 87 mph cutter to right field and Castellanos made the grab with his momentum moving forward.</p><p>Matt Olson chose to test the veteran outfielder’s arm, tagging up on the play and attempting to score. But Castellanos <a href="https://x.com/TalkinBaseball_/status/1961581552833630298" rel="noopener">cut him down</a>, throwing a bullet from right that nailed the Braves first baseman at home. The team’s offensive outpouring on Thursday appeared cathartic.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/philadelphia-phillies/phillies-news-insider-philadelphia-braves-clash">Phillies were looking for a statement game</a> and they got one, pummeling Braves starter Cal Quantrill for nine runs in 3.1 innings. But Atlanta rebounded for Game 2. Bryce Elder was excellent, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over seven innings.</p><p>But the Braves replaced Elder with Dylan Lee in the bottom of the eighth and the Phillies took advantage. Schwarber got on base with a one-out single and moved to third on Bryce Harper’s base hit. Alec Bohm then delivered the go-ahead run for Philadelphia with a sacrifice fly to right. Schwarber scored, putting the Phillies up 2-1.</p><p>Closer Jhoan Duran came on in the top of the ninth inning and slammed the door on Atlanta. The Phillies have one back-to-back games following the sweep in New York and maintain a five-game lead in the NL East.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He also has 56 runs batted in this season. He has worked in both the outfield and the infield for the Phillies this year.</p><p>Philadelphia is second in the National League East this season, with a 59-44 record. As of Saturday, the team is just half a game behind the New York Mets for the division lead.</p><h2><b>Nick Castellanos is having a solid year for the Phillies</b></h2><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/phillies-news-jt-realmuto-nick-castellanos-insane-base-running-feat-mets">Castellanos is a key cog in the Phillies’ offensive machine</a>. He posted two hits and an RBI on Friday night, in a team win over the struggling New York Yankees.</p><p>The Phillies will miss the versatile star, even if he is just out one game. Castellanos has posted RBIs in his last four games played. As a result, Philadelphia picked up wins in three of their last four contests.</p><p>Castellanos is a veteran who has played for several clubs. He has two seasons with at least 100 RBIs in the last five years. Those campaigns came with both Philadelphia and the Cincinnati Reds. Castellanos has played for the Phillies since the 2022 campaign.</p><p>With the MLB trade deadline approaching on July 31, it is possible that Castellanos may have played his last game in Philadelphia. The Kansas City Royals are rumored to be <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/07/24/sports/yankees-struggles-arent-dimming-the-optimism-around-them/" rel="noopener">pushing for a deal</a> to nab Castellanos, per The New York Post.
