However, with around a month remaining in the season, the Cardinals are currently in last place in the NL Central. St. Louis is 56-72 on the year and they are currently 14.5 games back of the first place Milwaukee Brewers. Part of the trouble this for the Cardinals has been injuries, and while it’s not going to matter for this season in terms of a playoff push, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cardinals-nolan-gorman-timetable-return-back-injury" rel="noopener">Cardinals did still announce</a> some important injury updates on Friday.</p><p>Infielder Nolan Gorman <a href="https://twitter.com/JohnDenton555/status/1695135978711560289" rel="noopener">received an important update</a> as he has been activated and is off the 10-day IL, according to a tweet from John Denton. The Cardinals have also optioned INF Jose Fermin down to their Triple-A Memphis squad. St. Louis also provided updates for a couple of pitchers. Drew VerHagen has been placed on the bereavement list, and Guillermo Zuniga has been called up from Triple-A Memphis. A lot of roster news for the Cardinals.</p><p>The Cardinals have just 33 games left in the season, and while they won’t be making a push for the playoffs, there is still something to play for. Ending the season on a high note can carry some momentum into the next year, and there are a lot of young players that can gain valuable experience down the stretch of the season. This season didn’t go the way that the Cardinals wanted it to, and now, their job is to make sure it doesn’t happen again next season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Barring a setback, Nolan Gorman is expected to return when the Cardinals play the Philadelphia Phillies Friday night, according to MLB.com. Gorman last played on Aug. 12 before going on the 10-day IL with a back injury.</p><p>Gorman has been managing his back injury since 2020. The Cardinals second baseman hurt himself while lifting weights three years ago. The 23-year-old has been forced to perform a stretching routine before games because of the ailment.</p><p>“Pretty much as soon as I get here, especially on these [day games], it’s even more important to make sure I get everything moving right,” Gorman said, via MLB.com. “A lot of the stuff I’ve been doing is stuff I’ve done all year to try and stay on top of it. Now, I’ve just maybe got to do it even more.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cardinals-news-oli-marmol-gets-real-nolan-gormans-recent-hot-streak">Gorman has been</a> one of St. Louis’ most productive players in what’s been a lost season for the Cardinals. In 104 games, he’s second on the team with 24 home runs and 67 RBI. Gorman is hitting .241/.328/.487.</p><p>With the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cardinals-news-paul-goldschmidt-reveals-a-major-reason-behind-desire-to-win-despite-ugly-season" rel="noopener">Cardinals long out of contention</a>, St. Louis’ focus for the remainder of the 2023 season will be on the team’s young players, like Gorman. The second baseman is only in his second MLB season. He has 38 home runs in 193 career games.</p><p>The Cardinals started three players who are younger than 24 years old in Tuesday’s loss against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 23-year-old has had an up-and-down season, but he is not hitting like the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cardinals-news-nolan-arenado-blasts-idea-st-louis-focus-2024" rel="noopener">Cardinals</a> believed he could. Manager Oli Marmol spoke about Gorman’s recent hot streak and <a href="https://www.mlb.com/cardinals/news/nolan-gorman-hits-three-run-homer-in-cardinals-win-over-marlins" rel="noopener">why it is happening</a>.</p><p>“Confidence, one,” Oli Marmol said, via Ben Weinrib of MLB.com. “And you build confidence off of having some success. He looks calmer at the plate. His attempt to chase less is going to be a big contributor to that. But he’s having a lot more success, and we’re going to continue to build off of that.”</p><p>Chasing less pitches has been a key for Gorman. He said that he has been working on that as of late.</p><p>“We work on it in the cage by just having a coach throw you pitches in the zone and out of the zone and react to it that way,” Gorman said, via Weinrib. “The biggest thing to pitch selection is just being on time. Being ready with your foot down in a good position to go. That’s what leads to good pitch selection.”</p><p>The Cardinals remain 10 games under .500 and likely sellers at the trade deadline, but they have enjoyed a recent stretch of strong play from Gorman and the team overall.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

They walked Goldy there to get to me… that emotion doesn’t come out of me a lot, so yeah it was fun,” Gorman <a href="https://twitter.com/MLBONFOX/status/1660105247203762176" rel="noopener">told</a> Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.</p><p>Gorman ended the night 2-for-3 with also a walk. He leads the Cardinals this season in both home runs (13) and RBI (39) while also batting .302. In addition, he carries around a .391 OBP and .640 slugging percentage for a 1.,031 OPS.</p><p>The win over the Dodgers has also allowed Nolan Gorman and the Cardinals to get out of the last place of the National League Central division for the first time in almost a month. Ryan Helsey got the pitching win for the Cardinals while Giovanny Gallegos earned his fourth save of the season.</p><p>After an eight-game losing skid, the Cardinals have gone 10-3. Gorman’s strong performance has led people around the MLB world to wonder if he will break out of his current platoon and begin playing on an everyday basis. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol left the door open for that to happen at some point, but said the roster <a href="https://twitter.com/JohnDenton555/status/1657142636157841411" rel="noopener">doesn’t currently “allow for it,”</a> Per John Denton.</p><p>“Yes, but at the moment (the roster) doesn’t allow for it,” Marmol said of Gorman. “He’s also pretty splitty &amp; we have a right-handed bat (Juan Yepez) that handles lefties.”</p><p>Gorman tends to primarily face right-handed pitchers, while Juan Yepez gets to hit against left-handers. With a pair of lefties set to face the Cardinals on Friday and Saturday, Nolan Gorman isn’t expected to see much playing time over the weekend.</p><p>Overall, Gorman is hitting .255 with eight home runs and an .865 OPS. With the exception of just seven at-bats, he’s only faced right-handed pitching. In those seven at-bats against left-handed pitchers, Gorman is slashing .000/.222/.ooo/. Meanwhile, he’s slashing .272/.356/.553 with a .909 OPS against righties.</p><p>Gorman, 23, needs consistent playing time. Yes, he’s struggled against left-handed pitching but it’s also an incredibly limited sample size. Platooning a young player with a bright future is only holding him back. Nevertheless, Marmol clearly wants to stick with the strategy for now.</p><p>The Cardinals are preparing for a weekend series against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. They will try to defeat the Sox despite Gorman likely being held out of the lineup for the first two games of the series.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
