The Nats <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nationals-news-washington-brings-excitement-to-post-juan-soto-life-by-calling-up-top-prospect/">rarely</a> have a reason to celebrate this 2022 MLB season, so they should be enjoying their sleep heading into another week. But more than that win, the Nationals also ended one of the most ignominious streaks in sports.</p><p>With that win over the Reds, the Nationals, for the first time in 43 games, had a starter collect a W. The Nationals already had the embarrassing record of having the longest drought for a starter win, as they broke the 35 games streak of the 1949 Washington Senators, but at least they’re no longer in that pitching quagmire.</p><p>Via <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/34477384/patrick-corbin-ends-washington-nationals-record-43-game-starting-pitcher-win-drought">ESPN</a>:</p><p>“Corbin (5-17) allowed one earned run and four hits in six innings while striking out five. A Washington starting pitcher had not earned a victory since Josiah Gray won at Philadelphia on July 6, shattering the previous big league record of 35 games set by the 1949 Washington Senators.”</p><p>Patrick Corbin has become some sort of an emblematic figure for the disappointing Nationals. He is earning $23 million this season, but he entered the Reds game with just a 4-17 record and a 6.81 ERA along with a dizzying 1.808 WHIP. That being said, Washington’s starters are also one of the run-starved units in Major League Baseball this year. The likes of the St. Louis Cardinals, <a href="https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/mlb/yankees-nationals-juan-soto-trade-talks-could-be-e2-80-98smokescreen-e2-80-99-mlb-insider-says/ar-AA101sQa">New York Yankees</a> and Los Angeles Dodgers have all <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/juan-soto-3-best-trade-destinations-nationals-star-after-declining-440-million-contract/">expressed interest</a> in the All-Star slugger.</p><p>One reported aspect of the trade talks between teams indicated that the Nationals intended to offload starting pitcher Patrick Corbin, who has three years left on a $140 million contract, in a Soto deal.</p><p>In a radio interview with 1067 The Fan, Nationals president Mike Rizzo spoke about the Soto trade, dropping this Corbin revelation, per Chelsea Janes of The Washington Post.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">"We're not going to dilute the return for any player by including a bad contract," Rizzo said, when <a href="https://twitter.com/JunksRadio?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@JunksRadio</a> asked him about throwing the Corbin contract into another deal at the deadline.</p><p>— Chelsea Janes (@chelsea_janes) <a href="https://twitter.com/chelsea_janes/status/1552283082140557312?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">July 27, 2022</a></p></blockquote><p><script async="" src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p></figure><p>Nationals president Mike Rizzo said that the club isn’t “going to dilute the return for any player by including a bad contract.” The front office executive was asked about attaching the Patrick Corbin contract, which is due to pay him $23 million this year and another $24 million the next, in any deadline deals.</p><p>It’s clear that he’s talking about the Juan Soto trade. It has been reported that the Nationals are seeking a bevy of prospects and MLB-ready players in return for the 2022 Home Run Derby champ.</p><p>It has also been indicated that the trade for Soto could net the Nationals the largest return anyone has ever seen. But, he might not be the only one moved at the August 2nd deadline.</p><p>Patrick Corbin is another player with a hefty salary who has seriously failed to live up to expectations. He signed a six-year, $140 million deal in 2018 and the Nationals could be looking to offload the remainder of that contract in a Juan Soto package.</p><p><a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/07/20/patrick-corbin-juan-soto-trade-speculation/?utm_campaign=wp_sports&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter">Via The Washington Post:</a></p><p>With the club listening to trade offers for Soto, a new possibility has emerged: package Corbin with Soto to offload some of — if not all of — what’s left on the six-year, $140 million deal Corbin signed in December 2018.</p><p>There is recent precedent for the maneuver. When the Boston Red Sox traded Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020, they also sent along David Price, whom they still owed three years and $96 million. And though Corbin has a partial no-trade clause, according to two people with knowledge of his contract, it is not thought to be an impediment to moving him before the Aug. 2 deadline.</p><p>Corbin has an ERA well over five since 2020 and frankly looks lost on the mound. Adding him to a Juan Soto trade could be enticing for another franchise where they could either give him a fresh start or move the lefty elsewhere. But, Washington will surely be expecting a haul of draft picks in return.</p><p>This is simply just a possibility at this point. But, Patrick Corbin isn’t exactly improving with the Nats.
