Jack Curry of YES Network <a href="https://x.com/JackCurryYES/status/1903124978276380911" rel="noopener">reports that</a> the Yankees may put Goldschmidt at lead-off this season, somewhere he has never hit.</p><p>Just taped an Aaron Boone interview for our ‘Yankees News &amp; Views’ podcast. We covered a lot,” Curry posted on social media. “From Boone…While [catcher Austin] Wells is expected to hit first vs RHP, Goldschmidt could get some reps vs LHP. He’s never led off in majors, but has a .381 career OBP.”</p><p>Curry <a href="https://x.com/JackCurryYES/status/1903127746944860305" rel="noopener">continued with some</a> context, “Goldschmidt hasn’t hit leadoff in any spring training games, but he’s expected to hit first vs the Phillies [Saturday, March 22]. Lefty Jesus Luzardo is scheduled to start for Philadelphia.”</p><p>When the Yankees signed Goldschmidt, they were not thinking lead-off. But they want to have Aaron Judge batting second. Putting a base-stealer like Jazz Chisholm Jr or Anthony Volpe at lead-off wastes that talent. They do not want guys getting picked off with Judge at the plate.</p><h2><b>The Yankees going with an untraditional lead-off hitter</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Paul-Goldschmidt-with-NY-Yankees.jpg"><figcaption>Kim Klement Neitzel-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Throughout spring training, the Yankees have used catcher Austin Wells as their lead-off hitter. When he was performing well last year, he had a great on-base percentage. But as a catcher, he is not a base stealer. That is exactly the recipe the Yankees are looking for ahead of Judge.</p><p>If they do roll with Goldschmidt at lead-off against lefties, they would start with back-to-back right-handed hitters. Aaron Boone has not done that as the manager of the Yankees but it makes sense with the other options. They want Cody Bellinger to reap the benefits of hitting behind Judge and their switch hitters, Oswaldo Cabrera, and Jasson Dominguez, are young and developing.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/tigers-news-detroit-gm-reveals-gleyber-torres-plan-after-15-million-contract">Yankees did not directly replace Gleyber Torres</a> with another infielder. He ended the season as the lead-off hitter in the playoffs and was solid at it. His defense was not worth keeping around at second base but the lack of replacement leads to a lot of questions. Wells must succeed in that slot otherwise pitching around Judge becomes a real possibility.</p><p>The Yankees face the Milwaukee Brewers on Opening Day on March 27 in The Bronx. Now it seems that it was an exaggeration.</p><p>Bryan Hoch, the Yankees writer for MLB.com, <a href="https://x.com/BryanHoch/status/1903112367619060211" rel="noopener">put out a tweet</a> about Goldschmidt’s status for Opening Day.</p><p>Paul Goldschmidt said his back is “100 percent or close to it,” the tweet reads. “Said the new plan is to give it one more day and play tomorrow. He took at-bats off Clarke Schmidt yesterday.”</p><p>This is a promising sign to Yankees fans after the former MVP was battling injuries throughout Spring Training. While a month and a half is a good time to shake the rust off, Goldschmidt has been going through injury rehab.</p><p>He’s been relatively healthy the past few seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals. His health is why there is a concern. Last two seasons, Goldschmidt only missed eight games each year.</p><h2><b>Paul Goldschmidt’s injury update should excite the Yankees</b></h2><p>In a lineup with Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Anthony Rizzo, there is plenty of space for Goldschmidt to dominate. After all, Yankee Stadium is <a href="https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/leaderboard/statcast-park-factors" rel="noopener">one of the most hitter-friendly ballparks</a> in the MLB.</p><p>Comparing that to Busch Field is quite the contrast. This won’t be the first time he’ll spend a season in a hitter-friendly ballpark. For example, when he was with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Chase Field, they had one of the most hitter-friendly parks in the league.</p><p>As Opening Day is around the corner, it’s trending towards being more and more likely that Goldschmidt can play. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-aaron-boone-paul-goldschmidt-injury-return-date">Yankees manager Aaron Boone expected Goldschmidt to be back</a> on Thursday or Friday.</p><p>Even if that doesn’t happen, the newest member of the Yankees cleared the air on his injury. If anyone knows his injury, it would be Goldschmidt.</p><p>There might be more of a grace period and not as much of a rush to have him back. But New York received a rare bit of positive injury-related news in the <a href="https://x.com/BryanHoch/status/1902093621266149548" rel="noopener">latest update</a> regarding the veteran first baseman.</p><p>While Goldschmidt received treatment on Tuesday, manager Aaron Boone expects him back in the lineup by Thursday or Friday, according to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch on X.</p><p>Goldschmidt attempted to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-paul-goldschmidt-injury-status-early-spring-training-exit">clear the air after his injury scare</a>, reassuring fans that he was only dealing with a sore back and wouldn’t need to miss significant time. But given the recent injury epidemic in New York, Boone’s declaration is particularly meaningful.</p><h2><b>The Yankees expect Paul Goldschmidt to play Opening Day</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Paul-Goldschmidt_bb8074.jpg"><figcaption>Kim Klement Neitzel-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Yankees will open the season with DH Giancarlo Stanton on the IL due to issues with both elbows and third baseman DJ LeMahieu out with a calf strain. However, the team’s rotation has been hit especially hard. Yankees ace <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-gerrit-cole-miss-2025-season-tommy-john-surgery">Gerrit Cole will miss the season</a> after undergoing Tommy John surgery and Luis Gil will be sidelined for months with a high-grade lat strain.</p><p>Most recently Clark Schmidt missed a start with a shoulder injury. While Schmidt avoided a serious injury – he’s expected to throw batting practice this week – he’s unlikely to be available at the start of the season.</p><p>The spate of injuries has left some big questions for Opening Day. Filling out the rotation will be challenging as well. Carlos Rodon was named the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-carlos-rodon-keeps-it-100-real-after-earning-opening-day-starter-nod">Yankees Opening Day starter</a>. He and newcomer Max Fried will need to step up and carry the rest of the rotation, which will likely include Marcus Stroman, Carlos Carrasco and rookie Will Warren at the start of the season.</p><p>Despite New York’s obvious need for an additional starter, the team has been <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/mlb-rumors-yankees-wont-trade-gerrit-cole-replacement-season-ending-injury">hesitant to add a pitching replacement</a>. The Yankees believe Warren, their fifth-ranked prospect, can contribute this season. If the 25-year-old righty fails to produce solid innings early on, New York might get more serious about acquiring a starter.</p><p>Goldschmidt is entering his 15th year in the majors. He’s been durable over his career, playing in at least 151 games in every full season since 2014. He was the NL MVP in 2022 with the St. Louis Cardinals. The starting rotation has been decimated while Giancaro Stanton and DJ LeMahieu have been sidelined as well. Then, on Monday, Paul Goldschmidt was forced from a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-paul-goldschmidt-dealt-concerning-back-injury-update">spring training game with a back injury</a>.</p><p>However, it appears the Yankees have dodged a bullet with Goldschmidt, as the veteran first baseman <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/paul-goldschmidt-dealing-with-sore-back" rel="noopener">avoided a serious issue</a>.</p><p>“My back has just been a little sore, so [Aaron Boone] just made the decision to stop there after three innings… I could have probably played the whole game. In Spring Training, you just try to be smart. This was probably a time [when] there’s no need to push through something and make it more sore,” Goldschmidt explained, per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.</p><h2><b>The Yankees can’t afford to lose Paul Goldschmidt</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Paul-Goldschmidt.jpg"><figcaption>Mike Watters-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Yankees signed the four-time Gold Glove winner this offseason to a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-paul-goldschmidt-12-5-million-contract">one-year, $12.5 million contract</a>. The 37-year-old former MVP is set to start at first for the team. And he’s been raking this spring.</p><p>Goldschmidt is slashing .313/.389/.688 with three doubles, three home runs, 10 RBI and seven runs scored in 13 Grapefruit League games. And he’s flashed the leather as well, making a nice diving stab on a line drive off the bat of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. before his early exit from Monday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays.</p><p>The Yankees need Goldschmidt to hold up with so many players succumbing to injuries. New York <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-gerrit-cole-miss-2025-season-tommy-john-surgery">lost Gerrit Cole for the season</a> due to Tommy John surgery. Then fellow starter Luis Gil went down with a lat strain. And most recently Clarke Schmidt was scratched from the rotation with shoulder soreness.</p><p>Additionally, designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton will start the season on the IL with ongoing elbow issues and there is no timeline for his return at the moment.</p><p>For a Yankees team that lost Juan Soto in free agency this offseason, the onslaught of injuries is making a return trip to the World Series that much more challenging. And although New York initially appeared <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/mlb-rumors-yankees-wont-trade-gerrit-cole-replacement-season-ending-injury">unlikely to add a replacement pitcher</a> to the staff, Brian Cashman and company may not have a choice with the rotation in shambles.</p><p>At least the Yankees got positive news from Goldschmidt after his injury scare. The 15-year veteran has no concerns about missing Opening Day with his new team.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Fast-forward to today, and there are injury-induced <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-brian-cashman-gerrit-cole-fallback-options">question marks throughout their roster,</a> especially on their starting pitching rotation.</p><p>And they just sustained another potential blow. New starting first baseman Paul Goldschmidt left Monday’s spring training game versus the Toronto Blue Jays <a href="https://x.com/ChrisKirschner/status/1901720291761402245" rel="noopener">with back soreness</a>, per The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner.</p><p>The 2022 National League MVP and free-agent acquisition exited after three innings, sending Yankees fans into a state of exasperation. There is no need to fret quite yet, though. The issue <a href="https://x.com/BryanHoch/status/1901721026163085487" rel="noopener">does not seem too serious</a> at this time, at least according to the man himself.</p><p>“He said he has been dealing with [the sore back] for a couple of days and didn’t want to push it,” MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch. “Goldschmidt said he has ‘zero’ concerns about being ready for Opening Day.” The Bronx will relax once they hear an official report downplaying the severity of the injury, but perhaps this is a rare lucky break for the Yankees in 2025.</p><h2><b>Yankees have had a brutal spring training</b></h2><p>Gerrit Cole is going to miss the entire season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, Luis Gil has a possible three-month stint on the injured list ahead of him, and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-yankees-starting-rotation-hit-another-concerning-injury-update">Clarke Schmidt just suffered a setback</a>.</p><p>As if the severely shorthanded pitching rotation is not enough, slugger Giancarlo Stanton and third baseman DJ LeMahieu are already on the shelf as well, once again succumbing to the injury bug.</p><p>The Yankees are growing weaker by the day. They can still roll out an impactful lineup right now, but preserving Goldschmidt figures to be important.</p><p>He batted .245 and hit 22 home runs in arguably the worst season of his MLB career last year, but the 37-year-old was a valuable contributor in the final two months of the campaign. Furthermore, the four-time Gold Glove winner still plays capable defense at first.</p><p>Assuming he can stay healthy, Goldschmidt should be an overall upgrade at first. His .302 on-base percentage in 2024 was almost 80 points below his lifetime average, so if he can just embody the plate discipline that has remained a constant in his game for 14 years, then the Yankees should be more than happy to give him $12.5 million for the 2025 season.</p><p>But Paul Goldschmidt cannot prove management right if he is unhealthy. Ideally, he will be able to figure out how to best remedy his back soreness before the grind begins.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
