The seven-time All-Star was posting eye-popping stats as New York dominated the division over the first two months of play. But both Goldschmidt and the Yankees are mired in a June swoon, highlighted by Saturday’s 7-0 loss to the Athletics.</p><p>Following the disheartening defeat, Goldschmidt addressed his <a href="https://x.com/snyyankees/status/1939058997648081403" rel="noopener">recent performance</a>. “It’s hurt our team the way I’ve played this month,” he said, per SNY Yankees Videos. “I feel fine but I’ve not played well for the last few weeks, maybe even this whole month,” Goldschmidt acknowledged.</p><p>“That’s part of the game, working to see if there’s adjustments to be made and trying to show up every day and perform… just try to help us win,” he added.</p><h2><b>Paul Goldschmidt and the Yankees are slumping</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Paul-Goldschmidt-2_3413cc.jpg"><figcaption>Steven Bisig-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-paul-goldschmidt-scorching-hot-start-draws-underrated-claim">Goldschmidt’s scorching-hot start</a> to the season put the former NL MVP in the All-Star Game conversation. Through May he was slashing an impressive .333/.387/.480 as he rebounded from a down year with the Cardinals in 2024. But Goldschmidt came crashing back to earth in June. He’s slashed a paltry .143/.214/.247 in 22 games this month, adding just 2 home runs and 4 RBI.</p><p>After a 1-4 showing against the Athletics Saturday, the 15th-year veteran is now hitting .285 with a .770 OPS on the season. He has 8 home runs, 32 RBI and 49 runs scored with 1.5 bWAR through 80 games. Not bad for a 37 year old who’s playing on a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-paul-goldschmidt-12-5-million-contract">one-year, $12.5 million deal</a>. But nowhere near the sensational stats from earlier this season.</p><p>And, of course, it’s not just Goldschmidt who’s struggling. The entire team is in a deep funk. Even reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge has dropped off in June as his batting average fell 43 points this month, from .398 at the end of May to .354 following an 0-3 showing Saturday.</p><p>The sputtering offense has obviously impacted the team. When the Yankees travelled to Boston to take on the Red Sox in mid June, New York was 20 games above .500 and firmly in control of the AL East. But a three-game sweep by the Red Sox kicked off a rough stretch for the Yankees.</p><p>New York has gone just 5-10 since June 13. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-obliterate-home-run-record-scoring-hot-start-2025">Yankees’ historic offensive production</a> from earlier in the season is a distant memory as the team has been shut out in four of the last 15 games. Goldschmidt squared up an 86 mph changeup from Lodolo driving the ball the opposite way to right field.</p><p>It appeared the veteran first baseman had tied the score 3-3 with a two-run blast. But Fraley immediately had a bead on the ball. He chased it to the track, leapt and came down with the catch while crashing into the wall.</p><h2><b>Jake Fraley preserves the Reds’ lead with clutch catch</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Jake-Fraley-2.jpg"><figcaption>Sam Greene/The Enquirer / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>It’s unclear if the ball would have left the yard had Fraley not made the great grab. But at the very least it would have been extra bases for Goldschmidt. And given the velocity of the drive, it could have caromed off the top of the fence, allowing Jasson Dominguez to score from first. However, Yankees fans will never know because the Reds right fielder made a fearless, clutch grab to rob New York.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/incredible-paul-goldschmidt-stat-will-have-yankees-fans-thrilled">Goldschmidt got off to a scorching-hot start</a> this year. Through the end of May, the 15th-year veteran was batting .338 with an .889 OPS. But since the calendar flipped to June, Goldschmidt has gone cold. He’s slashing .169/.239/.292 in 19 games this month.</p><p>He nearly busted out of his slump with an opposite field blast but Fraley was their to keep Goldschmidt cold and preserve the Reds’ lead.</p><p>Cincinnati looked to be on the way to turning the season around, winning nine of 11 games earlier this month. But the Reds have lost three of the last four heading into their series opener with the Yankees. The team is 40-38 entering play on Monday and 6.5 games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs in the NL Central.</p><p>Despite being in fourth-place in the division, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/mlb-rumors-1-team-that-could-shock-league-before-trade-deadline">Reds could surprise the league at the trade deadline</a>. The team is rumored to be considering making some aggressive moves in an effort to go all-in on the 2025 season. After Judge’s two-homer performance in <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/red-sox-news-trevor-story-truth-bomb-big-outing-yankees-prolonged-slump">Sunday night’s 11-7 loss to the Boston Red Sox</a>, Yankees teammate Paul Goldschmidt didn’t hold back his admiration for the Bronx Bomber’s continued excellence.</p><p>“He’s been doing it all the time,” Goldschmidt said. “That’s why he’s probably the best hitter on the planet right now. He’s been doing it for multiple years, too. It’s not just a one-night thing. His first homer came in the opening frame — a 436-foot rocket off Boston rookie Hunter Dobbins on the very first pitch he saw. The second came in the ninth off Robert Stock, tying him with Lou Gehrig for third-most multi-homer games in Yankees history (43). Only Babe Ruth (68) and Mickey Mantle (46) have more.</p><p>“Any time you get mentioned with those legends, it’s quite an honor,” Judge said postgame. “But it would’ve been sweeter to talk about it after a win.”</p><h2><b>Aaron Judge continues to put the Yankees on his back, despite loss to Red Sox</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Aaron-Judge-and-Paul-Goldschmidt.jpg"><figcaption>Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Judge’s monster game came with some extra motivation. Prior to the game, ESPN’s Eduardo Pérez told Judge about Dobbins’ headline-grabbing quote from the day before, where the Red Sox rookie said <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45477377/aaron-judge-homers-hunter-dobbins-surprised-red-sox-rookie-comment-yankees" rel="noopener">he’d rather retire</a> than sign with the Yankees.</p><p>“I’ve only heard Ken Griffey say that, so I was a little surprised,” Judge said. But he didn’t forget. The AL MVP stepped into the box with that comment fresh in his mind and promptly sent Dobbins’ fastball into orbit.</p><p>Still, Judge’s individual brilliance couldn’t lift New York to a win. The Yankees’ pitching staff was rocked by five Boston home runs, including a back-breaking three-run shot by former Yankee Carlos Narváez in the sixth inning off Carlos Rodón. It was Narváez’s first career homer — and it came against the team that signed him back in 2015.</p><p>Boston’s 27 runs in the series marked their highest total in a three-game set at Yankee Stadium since 2005. Despite DJ LeMahieu’s homer and a late rally attempt, the Yankees couldn’t keep up.</p><p>Jazz Chisholm Jr. weighed in on Dobbins’ pregame remarks during ESPN’s broadcast, saying, “I love competitiveness. All of them were spent either at first base or as the designated hitter. The newest first baseman on the New York Yankees roster turned heads on Wednesday when a video surfaced of him<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-paul-goldschmidt-fans-attention-learning-new-position"> taking ground balls at second base before New York’s game on Wednesday</a>. Yankees fans began talking about the potential position change and how it would impact Jazz Chisholm Jr., DJ LeMahieu, and the rest of Aaron Boone’s roster.</p><p>However, MLB Network reporter Bryan Hoch <a href="https://twitter.com/BryanHoch/status/1931493712648925678" rel="noopener">cleared the air</a> about the video he posted on his X account earlier this week. Doesn’t mean you’ll see him play there.”</p><p>The reason why the original story got so much attention is because of the roster issues <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-aaron-boone-giancarlo-stanton-marcus-stroman-rehab-assignments">Boone will face when Giancarlo Stanton makes his 2025 season debut</a>. When his team is fully healthy, he will have three players to fit in at first base and DH.</p><p>Goldschmidt has been one of the best hitters in the American League this season. However, Ben Rice is just as good at the plate, and Stanton’s power demands a starting spot as well. Someone will have to shift into a bench role if none are willing to change positions.</p><p>Goldschmidt learning how to play second base could have opened up some doors for Boone to explore. He would ideally replace LeMahieu at second and the veteran could back up him and Chisholm Jr. as needed.</p><p>With <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-anthony-volpe-absent-lineup-red-sox-injury">Anthony Volpe out of the Yankees’ lineup</a> for Saturday’s game against the Boston Red Sox, fans have begun thinking about who could replace him if he misses a longer stretch of games. Now the seven-time All-Star could add a new position to his resume.</p><p>Goldschmidt was seen <a href="https://x.com/BryanHoch/status/1930360301163069731" rel="noopener">fielding ground balls</a> at second base on Wednesday, per MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch on X. It appeared the 15-year veteran was working on mastering the position.</p><h2><b>Paul Goldschmidt move could pay off for Yankees</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Paul-Goldschmidt-2.jpg"><figcaption>Kirby Lee-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>On one hand, the move makes sense. With <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-jazz-chisholm-jr-set-return-guardians">Jazz Chisholm Jr. re-joining the lineup</a> the Yankees have a crowded infield. And with Giancarlo Stanton inching closer to a return from his elbow injuries, the team won’t be able to move the odd man out to DH soon.</p><p>If Goldschmidt could play second, the Yankees would be able to keep Chisholm at third base (where he played upon his return) and start Ben Rice at first, leaving daily designated hitter at-bats for Stanton. That would keep New York’s best bats in the lineup while sending struggling hitters DJ LeMahieu and Oswaldo Cabrera to the bench.</p><p>However, while Goldschmidt – a four-time Gold Glove winner – has been celebrated for his fielding, having him learn how to play second base mid season is a big ask. First base is the only position Goldschmidt has ever played during his long Major League career. And, frankly, at age 37, it’s unclear if he has the range or athleticism to handle second base duties.</p><p>Of course, the move would create a much stronger batting order for the Yankees. And so it should be explored. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/incredible-paul-goldschmidt-stat-will-have-yankees-fans-thrilled">Goldschmidt has been excellent</a> since coming to the Bronx. The former MVP is slashing .327/.382./.477 with six home runs, 28 RBI, 38 runs scored, a 144 OPS+ and 1.5 bWAR in 59 games this season.</p><p>His potential move to second base certainly captured Yankees fans’ attention as they took to social media to voice their opinions.
