They opened Friday night in St. Louis with Rafael Devers launching Michael McGreevy’s sixth pitch 416 feet to right-center and Willy Adames following with a 401-foot shot to left-center. The back-to-back jolts extended San Francisco’s home run streak to 18 games in an 8-2 win over the Cardinals, one shy of the franchise record set by the 1947 New York Giants. It was the fourth time the Giants have gone back-to-back this season — and <a href="https://www.mercurynews.com/2025/09/05/sf-giants-match-season-high-18-hits-as-seymour-notches-first-career-win/" rel="noopener">the second time in seven games</a> it’s been Devers and Adames doing the honors.</p><p>For a club that was seven games under .500 two weeks ago, everything suddenly looks loud and contagious. San Francisco racked up 18 hits — matching its season high — and has piled up a staggering 70 knocks over its last five games, the most in any five-game span since the franchise moved west. Six starters collected multiple hits Friday, all nine had at least one, and Jung Hoo Lee tied a career high with four.</p><p>Patrick Bailey added three from the nine-spot as the Giants notched their 11th win in 12 games to climb to 72-69, four games back of the Mets and Padres for the final two NL Wild Card berths. “We go into the game feeling good about our offense, and there’s a reason for it. … It’s contagious just like it goes the other way,” manager Bob Melvin said. “Right now, offensively, we feel like we’re as good as we’ve been all year.”</p><h2><b>Giants are positioning themselves for a playoff push</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Willy-Adames-3.jpg"><figcaption>Jeff Curry-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Rookie right-hander Carson Seymour rode that surge and then some. In just his second big-league start, Seymour carried a no-hitter into the fifth and finished five innings of one-run ball, allowing two singles with two strikeouts and one walk for his first MLB victory. Melvin had planned for a short night and a bullpen relay, but Seymour’s early dominance changed the script; San Francisco needed only Matt Gage and Tristan Beck, who recorded a rare three-inning save.</p><p>The postgame celebration was sticky. “My lip was kind of on fire,” Seymour said of the clubhouse condiment bath. “The whole bit, for sure.” Devers’ early thunder has become a theme. Seven of his 16 homers as a Giant have come in the first inning, and he owns a 1.010 OPS in the opening frame with San Francisco.</p><p>“Those are things that just happen in baseball,” Devers said through the team interpreter. “I just take every turn the same way.” Seymour felt the jolt. “It gives us energy in the dugout… It’s just contagious.”</p><p>The math is still uphill — FanGraphs pegs San Francisco’s playoff odds around four percent, Baseball-Reference a shade over 11 — but the path is clear. Since Aug. 22 the Giants are averaging 7.5 runs per game, riding a record-chasing long-ball binge that has them one swing from history and, suddenly, within shouting distance of October.</p><p>As Melvin put it: “Home runs have been a huge part of what we’ve been doing here recently, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/benches-clear-in-giants-rockies-clash-after-rafael-devers-home-run">and a lot of it has been Devers in the first inning.</a> He’s on a nice little heater.”</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

There are certain things baseball players do now that was considered taboo even a decade ago. Admiring home runs falls under that category. While plenty of fans still take issue with the practice — bat flipping as well — this is now largely seen as gamesmanship within the industry. Pitchers still don’t like it, but many of them begrudgingly accept it and try to regroup. That is much harder to do when a team is in the midst of a historically awful campaign, which is following six straight losing seasons. Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Kyle Freeland exploded on Tuesday.</p><p>The veteran left-hander gave up a two-run home run to Rafael Devers in the first inning of Tuesday’s 7-4 loss to the San Francisco Giants, but the three-time All-Star was not in a hurry to round the bases. Freeland took great offense and fired a verbal shot at the slugger. Devers became incensed, and a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/benches-clear-in-giants-rockies-clash-after-rafael-devers-home-run">benches-clearing brawl broke out</a>. As is often the case, things settled down before true chaos was unleashed. Freeland, Matt Chapman and Willy Adames were all ejected.</p><p>Freeland <a href="https://x.com/JomboyMedia/status/1963101541801324588" rel="noopener">explained his blazing reaction</a> after the game. “I just found it extremely disrespectful to show me up like that in the first inning after hitting a home run,” he told reporters, via Jomboy Media. “Standing there watching it, taking your sweet time getting down to first base. I’ve been in this league for quite some time, and I know he has as well. Perhaps everyone can learn from this experience.</p><p>Colorado needs Freeland to channel all his frustrations into his pitching. He is having another brutal year, posting a 5.41 ERA and 1.52 WHIP through 131 1/3 innings. Unless a spectacular final stretch follows, this will mark the third straight season the former first-round draft pick has recorded a 5.00-plus ERA. A top-five finish in the 2018 National League Cy Young race seems like ancient history now.</p><p>Both Freeland and the Rockies (39-100) must use the remainder of this lost campaign to find a spark that they can use in 2026. However, they are now one of the hottest teams in baseball and that continued with a 7-4 win over the Colorado Rockies in Denver. The Giants have now won nine of their last 10 games and are just five games out of the last wild card spot with less than a month to go in the regular season.</p><p>Bob Melvin and company ran into a bit of a curious situation in the first inning when third baseman Matt Chapman was ejected from the game. That left Melvin without anyone to play the hot corner, so he moved Rafael Devers from first base to third base for the night.</p><p>Devers’ position was a big controversy in Boston with the Red Sox before he was traded to the Giants, as Boston had him playing mostly first base and designated hitter. He asked me to play third base and I am here to help the team. … I haven’t taken any grounders at third base but I felt comfortable. I think that both positions are similar, first and third.”</p><p>The star slugger started the game at first base and had a first baseman’s glove, so he even had to steal Chapman’s glove to go play third. Apparently, the accolades of Devers’ star teammate carried over in the glove even after the ejection.</p><p>“It felt really good, it has five Platinum Gloves in there,” he said with a laugh.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/benches-clear-in-giants-rockies-clash-after-rafael-devers-home-run">Devers got his night started off with a bang</a> at the plate, smashing a two-run home run in the first inning that started a benches-clearing altercation between the two NL West rivals. However, he struck out twice during the game and finished just 1-for-5.</p><p>While the Giants will not want to lose Chapman for any more time, it’s good to know that Devers can still get the job done at third base during this playoff push if needed. But early in the game, things took an ugly turn after a big home run. While the camera was following the ball, the two players started jawing at each other. Willy Adames was the first person to get involved in the tussle, which quickly emptied the benches.</p><p>Since joining the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-craig-breslow-rafael-devers-trade-jed-hoyer-stance">Giants in a stunning mid-season trade, Devers</a> has been on a bit of a rollercoaster. He is on the way up right now, as this is his seventh home run in 15 games. It has come as San Francisco is trying to creep back into the National League Wild Card race. The Rockies provide a great opportunity for some wins, and they are off to a good start with the homer.</p><p>Freeland was ejected from the game before he recorded an out. He allowed a lead-off single to Heliot Ramos and then the homer to Devers before he was tossed. Matt Chapman and Adames were tossed for San Francisco, but not Devers. Dom Smith and Casey Schmitt came into the game for the Giants.</p><p>The Giants hope that there are no long-term suspensions coming from this tussle, as their upcoming schedule is vital. After Colorado, they head to St Louis for three games and host the Diamondbacks after that. If they are missing Adames and Chapman for any time, it could snuff their small playoff chances.</p><p>Devers stays in the game and looks to continue his late-summer surge while at altitude in Colorado.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

While his slash line of .250/.357/463 entering play on Monday is solid enough, Devers hasn’t quite hit to his full potential yet in Giants colors. But he certainly showed how powerful he can be with the bat on his hands after hitting a monster home run in San Francisco’s 8-2 win over the MLB-worst Colorado Rockies on Monday.</p><p>In the very first inning of play, Devers went yard, launching an inside fastball from Rockies starter Chase Dollander to deep right field to put the Giants on the board, 1-0. And that ball Devers hit wasted no time leaving the yard. For the Giants, this was the best tone-setter that they could have hoped for, as they handily took care of business against the worst team in the league and they hit the .500 mark as a result.</p><p>This home run was Devers’ 14th of the season, and he ended the night with a stat line of two hits, one walk, one RBI, and two runs in five plate appearances. This is the version of Devers that the Giants sorely need to anchor their lineup, and their improved level of play should give them a lot of hope not just for the future, but for the rest of the season — especially when they’ve clawed their way back to realistic playoff contention.</p><h2><b>Giants are ending the 2025 season with a flurry</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Willy-Adames.jpg"><figcaption>D. But they have been playing markedly better baseball as of late. They’ve gone 8-2 over their past 10, flourishing in a stretch where they faced good teams <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-news-logan-webbs-hyped-up-reaction-beating-brewers-cubs">such as the Milwaukee Brewers, and Chicago Cubs</a>.</p><p>They are now just five games back of the third and final Wild Card spot in the National League, just trailing the New York Mets and Cincinnati Reds.
