None of their big hitters — including newly acquired Alex Bregman — were able to come through in clutch hitting situations. Manager Alex Cora knows it’s a long season and there was some degree of relief when the Red Sox followed the initial series by taking two of three from the Orioles in Baltimore.</p><p>The Red Sox clinched the series with an 8-4 triumph Thursday afternoon. The Boston bats came alive in that game as Bregman, Kristian Campbell and Triston Casas all contributed two-run home runs in the victory. Bregman had his best game in a Red Sox uniform as he also had two doubles in addition to his first-inning long ball.</p><p>The assignment against Baltimore starting pitcher Charlie Morton was a tough one for Bregman. He had been just 1 for 14 against the veteran right hander before driving the first pitch he saw into the left field stands. Bregman was relieved to hit the early home run and he <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/alex-bregman-hits-first-red-sox-home-run">thought his teammates</a> were solid as well.</p><p>“He’s a really tough at-bat,” Bregman said, per Paige Leckie of MLB.com. “And obviously have so much respect for him; being his teammate, he’s a great dude and a really good competitor. It was not only his first home run, but his first RBIs and extra-base hit. This is Bregman’s first season not playing for the Houston Astros, so growing pains were to be expected.</p><p>The Red Sox won on Opening Day and then dropped five consecutive games before Wednesday’s win. Bregman and Devers both struggling was not a sustainable recipe for Boston and this could be a slump breaker for the former. The latter finally got his first hit on Wednesday and even picked up a second, so he entered Thursday 2-23.</p><p>The highlight of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-red-sox-garrett-crochet-message-front-office-humbling-orioles">Red Sox season so far has been Garrett Crochet</a>. After trading four of their top prospects for the lefty this offseason, he has dominated his first two starts and inked a monstrous extension. Many pundits picked the Sox to return to the playoffs because of Bregman and Crochet’s arrivals. If both are clicking, they will be hard to beat.</p><p>After Thursday’s matinee, the Red Sox return to Beantown to open Fenway Park for the 2025 season. But on Wednesday night at Camden Yards,<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/red-sox-news-jonathan-papelbon-calls-out-rafael-devers-shape-amid-struggles"> Devers finally delivered — and the weight of the world seemed to lift.</a></p><p>Devers went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and a single in Boston’s 3-0 win over the Orioles, providing both relief and production at a much-needed time. But help is on the way for the Red Sox as they move to 2-4 on the year after an impressive 3-0 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday which was buoyed by an <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-boston-garrett-crochet-agree-to-monster-170-million-extension">ace-level start from Garrett Crochet</a>, who pitched eight innings and struck out eight in a shutout victory.</p><p>Crochet is having to do some very heavy lifting for the Red Sox rotation, and he’s certainly capable of doing so. In fact, both Red Sox wins thus far in 2025 have come during Crochet’s starts. But Boston is going to get a few starting pitching reinforcements in no time, with Lucas Giolito and Brayan Bello <a href="https://www.masslive.com/redsox/2025/04/red-sox-injuries-starter-feeling-good-after-rehab-start-lucas-giolito-goes-21-scoreless.html" rel="noopener">receiving positive updates</a> in their road to recovery from injury.</p><p>Giolito looked very good in his rehab start with Triple-A Worcester, as he allowed just one hit and one walk in 2.1 innings of work while striking out two, as per Christopher Smith of Mass Live. He also had his <a href="https://x.com/SmittyOnMLB/status/1907586216993677778" rel="noopener">entire repertoire</a> in display, as he threw his four-seamer, changeup, slider, and curveball at least once, and his fastball topped out at 94.7 mph on a night where he averaged 93.2 on his heater, as noted by Smith.</p><p>Meanwhile, manager Alex Cora said that “everything went well” in Bello’s rehab start for Triple-A, although he did allow four runs on four hits and two walks in 2.1 innings of work. Though he will only make $3.8 million this season, his new six-year deal <a href="https://x.com/BNightengale/status/1907170439786639503" rel="noopener">kicks in next year</a> with a $24 million salary in 2026, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today.</p><p>Crochet’s salary will then increase to $28 million in 2027-30 and will bump up to $30 million in 2031, the last guaranteed year of the deal.</p><p>The Red Sox will then have a $15 million club option for 2032 if Crochet spends 120 consecutive days on the Injured List between 2026 and 2031 for a left arm injury. Crochet can opt out in 2030 if that condition has not yet been satisfied.</p><p>From 2027 to 2031, Crochet will also be able to increase his base salary based on his previous season performance. The Red Sox ended up winning the game 5-2, but the score was tied at two when Crochet exited the game, so he did not get the win. Still, he looked solid in the performance as he lasted five innings and gave up two earned runs and five hits. He struck out four batters and walked two.</p><p>The Red Sox signed multiple big-name players this offseason, and they are expected to be a contender this year. There’s plenty of time to bounce back but it appears the fanbase is growing weary of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-rafael-devers-unwanted-mlb-record-brutal-start">star designated hitter Rafael Devers</a>.</p><p>The 28-year-old star has played in all five games for the Red Sox so far but has failed to record a single hit, starting the season off 0-19 at the plate. To make matters worse, Devers has already struck out 15 times on the season. Historically, <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/rafael-devers-begins-2025-with-historic-strikeout-mark" rel="noopener">this is the worst start</a> for a hitter through five games in an MLB season.</p><p>Although we’re only five games into the regular season, Red Sox fans are growing concerned. It’s getting to the point where numerous individuals are roasting Rafael Devers for his sluggish slump. Many make jokes while others ponder whether moving him off of third base is affecting his play.</p><p>“Rafael Devers is 0-19 with 15 Ks. That’s almost impossible to do. Not even sure sitting him will change much right now. This is brutal,” <a href="https://x.com/Steve_Perrault/status/1906808192534995124" rel="noopener">said one user</a>.</p><p><a href="https://x.com/Thomas_Carrieri/status/1906800975987519508" rel="noopener">One fan jokingly suggested</a>, “Have they tried turning off Rafael Devers and turning him back on again?”</p><p>“The Red Sox should really consider moving Rafael Devers back to 3rd base so he can build back up his confidence by committing a bunch of errors to go with all those strikeouts,” <a href="https://x.com/John_Zannis/status/1906799923992920073" rel="noopener">joked another individual</a>.</p><p>Former Baltimore Orioles first baseman <a href="https://x.com/ryanripkenshow/status/1906826897633186280" rel="noopener">Ryan Ripken stated</a>, ” Devers is struggling BAD but he is going to get it figured out soon.”</p><p>“I actually to this point could have the same stats as Devers has,” <a href="https://x.com/Tags2424/status/1906826819405586703" rel="noopener">claimed another fan</a>.</p><p>With the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-jonathan-papelbon-calls-out-rafael-devers-shape-amid-struggles">Red Sox star acquiring his 15th strikeout</a> on the season so far, he’s currently on pace for 486 strikeouts on the season. The current MLB record was set in the 2009 season by Mark Reynolds, who struck out 223 times that season. Devers is well on pace to smash that record.</p><p>Red Sox <a href="https://x.com/RSNStats/status/1906826979204338069" rel="noopener">manager Alex Cora fielded questions</a> about Devers’ slow start after Monday’s contest. Cora seemed a bit more optimistic about the situation than the fanbase, claiming there “were some positives today.” He also claimed that he likes that Devers isn’t “chasing pitches.”</p><p>“Red Sox Manager Cora on Rafael Devers: “We’ll find it mechanically. The good thing is that he’s not chasing pitches, he’s swinging at pitches in the zone. Obviously, the bad thing is he’s swinging and missing…but there were some positives today and we just build from that.”</p><p>Devers will have his next opportunity to get his first hit on the season on Wednesday when they face off against the Orioles again. He even set an ugly MLB record in the process.</p><p>Following the Red Sox’s loss to the Rangers on Sunday, former pitcher and current analyst Jonathan Papelbon<a href="https://x.com/gfstarr1/status/1906453490093740234" rel="noopener"> bluntly said</a> Devers must lose weight.</p><p>Via Gabrielle Starr:</p><p>“”Maybe (Devers is) out of shape. … Maybe we gotta trim a little bit of fat. … You trim fat, pigs squeal. … Is it the shoulders? Is he in shape? We don’t know these things, but to me, it looks like the swing is just a little bit behind,” Papelbon said on the NESN broadcast.</p><p>Yikes. To make matters worse for Devers, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/red-sox-news-alex-cora-red-sox-winning-business-reason-rafael-devers-alex-bregman-decision">he lost his spot at third base after the Red Sox signed Alex Bregman in free agency</a>. While he publicly made it clear he wanted to keep playing at the hot corner, skipper Alex Cora instead shifted Devers over to the full-time DH in Beantown, which upset the Dominican.</p><p>Now that he’s strictly in the lineup for offense, going hitless in four games is far from ideal. I mean, Devers could barely make contact with the baseball. Obviously Papelbon is just giving his brutally honest opinion, but when the bat is moving slowly, it’s understandable to say he needs to shed weight.</p><p>On a more positive note, the campaign just began. Yes, Devers is struggling immensely, but there’s little doubt he will figure it out. After all, Devers is one of Boston’s best hitters, slashing .272 with 28 home runs and 83 RBI last year.</p><p>The Red Sox are back in action on Monday afternoon as they begin a three-game set with the Baltimore Orioles, who will be one of their biggest rivals this season en route to a hopeful AL East title.
