He allowed five runs, three of them earned and did not make it out of the fourth inning in that start.</p><p>The Mariners signed Ray to a five-year, $115 million contract before the 2022 season. He made 32 starts and had a 3.71 ERA with 212 strikeouts, helping the Mariners make the playoffs for the first time in 20 seasons.</p><p>He joined the Mariners on the back of the best season of his career in 2021. Ray led the American League in ERA and the entire MLB in strikeouts with 248 punchies with the Toronto Blue Jays. He was named the AL Cy Young Award winner.</p><p>Though the loss of Ray is a tough pill to swallow, the Mariners have the means to make up for his absence. The move for Luis Castillo at the trade deadline last July becomes that much more important with Ray on the mend.</p><p>Castillo has been phenomenal since joining Seattle. He had a 3.17 ERA in 11 starts in 2022 and has been one of the best starters in the league this season, sporting a 1.52 ERA in five starts with 34 strikeouts.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mariners-news-robbie-ray-dealt-tough-injury-update-after-dismal-debut-vs-guardians" rel="noopener">Mariners wanted Robbie Ra</a>y to be an ace for them as they go from perennial mediocrity to consistent appearances in the postseason. In order to meet those standards, though, they will probably need a healthy <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mariners-news-scott-servais-long-winded-explanation-on-analytical-decision-to-use-robbie-ray-vs-yordan-alvarez" rel="noopener">Robbie Ray</a>. And that is not something they can currently say they have.</p><p>The 2021 <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-odds-2023-american-league-cy-young-prediction-and-pick" rel="noopener">American League Cy Young</a> is headed to the 15-day injured list (IL) after being diagnosed with a <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/robbie-ray-to-injured-list-flexor-strain" rel="noopener">left flexor strain</a>, per MLB.com. The disappointing news comes after Ray struggled against the Cleveland Guardians on Friday night. The southpaw could not find home plate, walking five batters and surrendering five runs, three earned, in 3 1/3 innings of work.</p><p>If fans were to look on the bright side, they can take solace in knowing that Ray’s woes could have been due to his injury and not just inferior stuff. Skeptics, however, know that forearm-related issues can linger for a while. Hopefully, Ray regains his old form as soon as he clears rehab.</p><p>The 31-year-old signed a five-year contract worth $115 million with the Mariners in November 2021 after a stellar season with the Toronto Blue Jays. Although he was not quite the best pitcher in the league in 2022, Ray posted a respectable 3.71 ERA with 212 strikeouts- seventh most in MLB. Along with Luis Castillo, he is a stabilizing force at the top of what is a fairly young starting pitching staff.</p><p>That being said, Seattle is deep enough to survive a couple weeks without their trusty left-hander. Castillo was nearly unhittable in the team’s Opening Day win, and Logan Gilbert and George Kirby already flashed their potential last season. Marco Gonzales is also a solid option near the backend of the rotation.</p><p>Everyone moves up for now with Ray gone. While the 31-year old southpaw had a solid 2022 season, pitching to the tune of a 3.71 ERA and amassing 212 strikeouts in 189 innings pitched, he struggled all-season long against the Astros.</p><p>Ray had a 10.97 ERA in 10.2 innings pitched (three starts) against the Astros, which made him a less-than-ideal candidate to get the final out of a crucial game. And the Mariners paid for it dearly after Ray surrendered a walk-off three run shot to Yordan Alvarez, losing the game 7-6 in the end.</p><p>Still, Scott Servais defended his (now-baffling) decision to put Robbie Ray in the game. He said that he merely continued to put his trust on the Mariners’ process of player evaluation and in-game decision-making, which, to be fair, led to a 90-win season and an AL Wild Card Round triumph over the Toronto Blue Jays.</p><p>“You stay true to the process and understanding the pieces you have available that day to go ahead and hopefully finish off the game. It didn’t happen yesterday. It didn’t work out.” Servais said, <a href="https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/mariners/servais-explains-mariners-decision-to-use-robbie-ray-vs-astros-we-have-a-really-good-process/">per Seattle Times</a>.</p><p>The Mariners’ decision to roll with the process that has worked all season long is admirable, even if it proved to be their Game 1 undoing.</p><p>“A lot of it is tied into who is available, what the matchups are, and what our matchup numbers are, they’re developed by us. […] Every team has an analytical group that puts all the information together and it spits out a number to me and my coaching staff and the whole strategic group that puts together game plans and how we’re going to use guys. So you rely on it,” Servais added.</p><p>At first glance, the thought process behind Servais’ decision is sound. Ray notably pitched better against lefties in 2022, allowing only a .647 OPS compared to a .739 mark against right-handers. However, Alvarez’ platoon splits are <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/astros-news-yordan-alvarez-spills-on-gaining-edge-over-robbie-ray-right-before-walk-off-hr/">negligible</a>, having raked against lefties and righties alike.</p><p>Nonetheless, those are all in the past now, and Scott Servais and the Mariners need to put this crushing defeat behind them. However, he was chased from the game after Jeremy Pena hit a single to center field, which put two runners on base after David Hensley was hit by a pitch. While all of that was going on, southpaw Robbie Ray had been warming up on the Mariners bullpen.</p><p>Thus, Yordan Alvarez understood that the Mariners were going to put the lefty on to gain a handedness advantage and knew what he ought to do to gain an advantage over Ray. And <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/astros-news-yordan-alvarez-sends-mariners-home-reeling-with-438-foot-upper-deck-walk-off-home-run/">it worked</a>: Alvarez sent a walk-off three-run missile to the upper-deck in right field. When asked after the game, Alvarez had a simple explanation for what made him so effective against the 31-year old left-hander.</p><p>“As soon as I saw him warming up, I knew that he was going to come into the game if it came down to me. And as soon as I saw that, I grabbed the iPad, saw our previous encounters, and just went out there,” Alvarez said, <a href="https://twitter.com/DKramer_/status/1579986067100356608">per Daniel Kramer</a>.</p><p>Of course, some fans became immediately <a href="https://twitter.com/AirByron7/status/1579987015978061824?s=20&amp;t=FePU0TRP6VsPpAKNdT5QNg">wary</a> of the Astros’ relationship with technology, especially because of their past sign-stealing ways. Nonetheless, it’s common practice these days for players in all sports to brush up on crucial information using iPads or other tablets, and it’s hard to pin a homer off a poorly-placed sinker on such allegations.</p><p>Perhaps the Mariners were just caught <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mariners-news-robbie-rays-stats-vs-astros-prove-scott-servais-made-the-worst-possible-decision/">favoring</a> the old-school baseball train of thought that bringing in a pitcher of the same handedness will bring a considerable advantage. Alas, Yordan Alvarez is just a different kind of beast. He has raked against lefties and righties alike.</p><p>Against southpaws during the 2022 season, Alvarez put up 10 home runs and 33 runs batted in on an incredible OPS of .998 in 192 plate appearances, rendering talks of platoon advantage moot when it comes to the 25-year old slugger.</p><p>The Astros continue their quest to redeem themselves from their 2021 World Series defeat, but if Yordan Alvarez’ performances are any indication, then opposing pitchers will have little to no answers for how to deal with Alvarez’ blend of ability and smarts on the plate.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

After chasing Justin Verlander out of the game in just four innings, the Mariners looked prime to hold out and pick up a Game 1 win. The Astros fought back and narrowed the gap, entering the bottom of the ninth inning trailing by two runs in a 7-5 game. Paul Sewald recorded two outs in the bottom of the ninth before walking Jeremy Peña before Scott Servais made the shocking decision to bring in Robbie Ray for the final out of the game.</p><p>Ray failed to record that out, letting up a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/astros-news-yordan-alvarez-sends-mariners-home-reeling-with-438-foot-upper-deck-walk-off-home-run/">walk-off three-run home run</a> to Yordan Alvarez after throwing just two pitches. He surrendered 13 runs in that span off of 23 hits including six home runs. That’s good for a 10.97 ERA and a 2.84 WHIP. There was no team in baseball against whom Ray performed worse.</p><p>In fact, in his two most recent starts against the Astros, Ray lasted a total of just 5.2 innings, never making it into the fourth frame. He let up 10 runs, three home runs, 15 hits and four walks during those two starts.</p><p>It’s truly mind-boggling that Servais elected to take Sewald out of the game and bring Ray into the game for the most crucial out of the series. The Mariners may not find themselves in a better position to win. Failing to hold onto this game is a colossal failure, and the onus is on Servais.</p><p>Anyone looking at Ray’s splits against the Astros would know better than to bring him in, during an unfamiliar situation, in what was the most important moment of Seattle’s season. Ray hasn’t made a relief appearance in the better part of the last half-decade, yet Servais deemed it the right time to turn to him in the bottom of the ninth, against one of baseball’s most esteemed sluggers in Yordan Alvarez.</p><p>The lefty-lefty matchup did nothing for the Mariners, as Alvarez took Ray deep on a 438-foot nuke to right field on the second pitch of the at-bat. Talk about a controversial decision blowing up in your face almost immediately.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
