The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/miami-marlins/marlins-news-miami-streaking-5th-straight-win">Marlins had won a season-high five straight games</a> and six of the last seven contests. Miami felt confident in its chances of making it six in a row with ace Sandy Alcantara taking the mound for the team Saturday.</p><p>As it turns out, the Marlins ultimately did manage to extend their streak to six straight wins. But Alcantara was little help as he got rocked by the Diamondbacks. The former Cy Young winner allowed seven runs on 10 hits over six innings.</p><p>The dud of an outing comes at a particularly <a href="https://x.com/BNightengale/status/1939082347435171932" rel="noopener">damaging time</a> for Miami as Alcantara’s trade value was beginning to surge, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.</p><h2><b>Sandy Alcantara dud hurts Marlins’ trade chances</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Sandy-Alcantara-2.jpg"><figcaption>Rhona Wise-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Alcantara is one of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/2025-mlb-trade-deadline-5-players-most-likely-moved">most likely players to be moved at the trade deadline</a>. The Marlins, despite the recent hot streak, aren’t going anywhere this season. The team is 10 games below .500 and 12 games back in the NL East. So, Miami is expected to shop the two-time All-Star, hoping to add younger, cheaper prospects to the farm system in a swap.</p><p>A number of teams were reportedly interested in landing Alcantara to bolster their rotations for a playoff push. The problem for the Marlins is that the eighth-year veteran is off to a rough start in 2025.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/miami-marlins/marlins-news-miami-manager-refuses-to-give-up-on-sandy-alcantara-despite-struggles">Alcantara has struggled mightily this season</a> as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery, which cost him the entire 2024 campaign. However, most observers assumed the 29-year-old righty would knock the rust off and round into form as the season progressed. While that’s still certainly a possibility, Alcantara has yet to look like the dominant ace who unanimously won Cy Young honors in 2022.</p><p>Still, Alcantara has made progress this season. After posting a 9.28 ERA in five April starts, and following that up with an 8.46 ERA through five outings in May, the Marlins’ hurler had shown improvement in June.</p><p>Prior to the clunker against the Diamondbacks Saturday, Alcantara had a 2.74 ERA in four starts this month. He struck out 19 batters while only walking five over 23 innings in June – a positive sign that a rebound was around the corner. That rebound may still occur. But Saturday’s start put a damper on Alcantara’s prospects. He now has a 6.98 ERA on the season.</p><p>The Marlins, however, have stayed hot at the plate. The team battled back after trailing 7-3 when Alcantara left the game. Miami managed to tie the score before winning 8-7 in the 10th inning.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Powered by home runs from Kyle Stowers, Heriberto Hernandez, and Otto Lopez, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/miami-marlins/3-early-miami-marlins-trade-targets-ahead-of-2025-deadline">Miami improved to 10-4 over its last 14 games</a>.</p><p>Stowers launched a go-ahead solo homer to open the sixth inning, chasing Arizona starter Merrill Kelly from the game. It was Stowers’ 13th home run of the season, which is tops on the team, and his third blast in five days following a 31-game drought. The Marlins are now 16-6 when Stowers drives in a run this year.</p><p>Lopez went three-for-five with a homer, extending his hitting streak to eight games. He is batting 15-for-32 with 10 RBIs during that span. Lopez also scored twice, along with Connor Norby, who added two hits of his own.</p><p>The Marlins’ offense notched 13 hits, marking five straight games with double-digit hits, including eight that went for extra bases. Miami didn’t collect its first hit until there were two outs in the fourth inning but then strung together three consecutive doubles. Agustín Ramírez ripped a double with an exit velocity of 116.9 mph, the hardest-hit ball of his career, to drive in Lopez and put Miami up 2-1.</p><p>Starter Eury Pérez threw a season-high 93 pitches in 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on two hits while walking three and striking out three. Ronny Henriquez, one of six pitchers used by Miami, allowed one run in 1.1 innings.</p><p>Kelly, who retired the first 11 batters he faced for the Diamondbacks, exited after giving up five runs (three earned) in five-plus innings, striking out seven and walking one. Defensive miscues undermined his start, with errors by Josh Naylor and Kelly himself contributing to a three-run Marlins fourth inning, despite there being no hard-hit balls.</p><p>The Diamondbacks hit three home runs, with Jake McCarthy, Geraldo Perdomo, and Alek Thomas going deep, and they nearly completed a ninth-inning comeback. Down 9-5, Arizona loaded the bases with no outs. After a walk forced in a run and a two-run single by Pavin Smith trimmed the lead to one, Tim Tawa grounded into a double play to end the game.</p><p>The win not only ended the Diamondbacks’ impressive run of 10 wins in their last 15 games, but it also helped the Marlins to keep their own momentum going in a crowded National League race. The Marlins outscored the Giants 24-12 in the sweep despite entering the series with the third-worst run differential in the majors. Manager Bob Melvin didn’t help matters with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-news-bob-melvin-costly-decision-marlins">questionable decision making that proved costly</a>.</p><p>With Thursday’s 12-5 loss, the Giants fell to 6.5 games back in the NL West. Following the game, Melvin attempted to put an <a href="https://x.com/KNBR/status/1938374730995978587" rel="noopener">optimistic spin</a> on the team’s current situation. “We feel like we’re a lot better than we played these three games. We’re not in a horrible position, yet we feel like we’re a better team than our record is right now,” he said, per KNBR on X.</p><h2><b>The Giants reached a new low in Marlins sweep</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Giants_440cd3.jpg"><figcaption>Sergio Estrada-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Giants managed to chase down the division-leading Dodgers and moved into a first-place tie with LA on June 13. But since then, San Francisco has gone 3-8 while the Dodgers went 10-2, retaking control of the NL West.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/3-players-san-francisco-giants-fans-are-already-fed-up-with">Giants fans have been frustrated</a> with the team this season. But San Francisco appeared poised to challenge the Dodgers after surging ahead in the standings with a seven-game winning streak earlier in the month.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-rafael-devers-blockbuster-red-sox-trade">Giants then landed Rafael Devers</a> in a trade with the Boston Red Sox, adding some much-needed firepower to the offense. However, the acquisition has so far failed to translate into wins as the team has gone 3-5 with Devers in the lineup.</p><p>Now the three-time All-Star is dealing with a groin injury. However, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-news-bob-melvin-rafael-devers-groin-injury">Melvin downplayed the severity of the strain</a> and Devers has played through the ailment, hitting his 20th home run of the season in a losing effort Thursday.</p><p>While Melvin was quick to let the Giants off the hook for an embarrassing showing against the Marlins with his postgame comments, fans were not so kind to the veteran manager.</p><p>Nothing Is Written commented:<br>“He talks more like a politician than he does a manager. The deal, firs t reported by MLB.com’s Christina De Nicola, is Toronto’s <a href="https://x.com/CDeNicola13/status/1937715119544553516" rel="noopener">first transaction</a> ahead of the MLB trade deadline.</p><p>Robinson Pina, 26, was recently designated for assignment by the Marlins after making his MLB debut on June 20, where he pitched one inning and surrendered a solo home run to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/atlanta-braves/braves-news-austin-riley-drops-embarrassing-truth-bomb-struggles">Atlanta Braves’ Austin Riley</a>. That outing was his lone appearance in the majors.</p><p>In Triple-A Jacksonville during the 2025 season, Pina has posted a 4–3 record with a 3.47 ERA and a 3.73 FIP across 13 appearances (11 starts), totaling 57.0 innings. He has recorded 54 strikeouts and issued just 14 walks, equating to a strikeout rate of 22.2% and a walk rate of 6.2%. His WHIP stands at 1.193.</p><p>Pina’s underlying metrics further show his effectiveness. His 31.95% chase rate ranks in the 83rd percentile of Triple-A pitchers, while his whiff rate sits at 29.3% with a swinging strike rate of 13.61%. He employs a five-pitch arsenal: a four-seam fastball and sinker (both around 93 mph), a low-80s slider (used 30.6% of the time), along with a splitter and cutter.</p><p>Originally signed by the Los Angeles Angels in 2017, Pina has also spent time in the Philadelphia Phillies’ system, where he logged a 4.18 ERA across 129.1 innings in 2024, starting all 25 of his appearances. Pina is expected to join Triple-A Buffalo as a depth option. His three remaining minor league options add valuable roster flexibility for the Blue Jays.</p><p>Headed to Miami is 24-year-old Colby Martin, a late-blooming pitching prospect drafted in the 16th round of the 2024 MLB Draft by Toronto out of Southeastern University. Originally an infielder, Martin converted to pitching full-time in 2024 after transferring from a Division III program to an NAIA school.</p><p>In 2025, Martin has shown promise as a relief pitcher. At Single-A Dunedin, he posted a 1.61 ERA and 2.90 FIP over 22.1 innings, notching a 33.3% strikeout rate and a 16.1% walk rate. He allowed just six hits and struck out 30 batters in those 21 appearances. Martin was recently promoted to High-A Vancouver, where he made a single appearance before the trade.</p><p>Martin features a high-velocity four-seam fastball that averages 97 mph and has touched 102 mph in the past. His 41% whiff rate ranks in the 91st percentile among Single-A pitchers. However, command remains a concern, as evidenced by his elevated walk rate.</p><p>Despite a brief professional track record, just over 32 innings pitched, Martin represents a developmental project with significant upside, making him a worthwhile acquisition for the rebuilding Marlins.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

They do, however, have plenty of talent. Still, the Marlins sit 13 games under .500, and 15.0 games back in the National League East division. With that, the Wild Card race is extremely competitive, and Miami is 9.5 games back. Needless to say, when the MLB trade deadline hits, the Marlins are going to be in a position to sell.</p><p>Miami was never going to be a playoff contender this season, but there are some players underperforming. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/miami-marlins/marlins-news-miami-manager-refuses-to-give-up-on-sandy-alcantara-despite-struggles">One of those players is former National League Cy Young Sandy Alcantara</a>. He has not been at his best this season, but things are starting to look up for him.</p><p>The Marlins also have a whole bunch of <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/miami-marlins/overview" rel="noopener">players in the pre-arbitration period</a> of their contracts. Meaning the team does not have many players at the end of their contracts in Miami. With that said, the years of club control over a few of their key assets is going to generate a great return if the Marlins decide to part ways with those players.</p><p>Keeping that in mind, here are two players the Marlins should have on their trade block heading into the July 31st MLB trade deadline.</p><h2><b>SP Sandy Alcantara should be dealt </b></h2><p>As mentioned, Alcantara is not having the best season. On the year as a whole, the right-handed pitcher owns a 3-8 record with a 6.88 ERA over 14 games started. He has thrown 68.0 innings, allowed opponents to hit .258 off him, he has struck out 55 batters, and walked 32. It is not the season he was expected to have, and the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/miami-marlins/marlins-rumors-the-blockbuster-trade-miami-isnt-expected-to-make">Marlins are content on waiting to trade Alcantara</a> until he starts pitching better.</p><p>In his last two starts, however, Alcantara has started to regain his Cy Young form. He has thrown 11.0 innings, allowed 8 hits, struck out 11, walked two, and his ERA sits below 2.00. With the way he has pitched recently, the Marlins could be inclined to deal him away sooner rather later. If Miami wants the biggest return for their star pitcher, they will need to trade him at his peak.</p><p>As for Alcantara’s contract, he is a free agent in 2028. The 29-year-old is owed $17.3 million in 2025 and 2026, and there is a $21 million club option for 2027. The money is something that could deter teams from giving up too much for the former Cy Young. However, there are <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/miami-marlins/mlb-rumors-sandy-alcantara-trade-interest-gets-shocking-update-from-insider">plenty of teams that could use a front-end starting pitcher</a> as they look to make the playoffs.</p><p>It is time for the Marlins to fully commit to either a rebuild or winning. With the team’s record at the moment, a full rebuild could be the best option.</p><h2><b>RP Anthony Bender should be shopped around</b></h2><p>Anthony Bender is not a name that many people know, but he has been one of the better relief pitchers in baseball.</p><p>For Miami this year, Bender has made 30 appearances, which is good for second-most on the team. He has thrown 29.1 innings, and opponents are hitting just .187 off him. His strikeout numbers are not great, and his advanced stats imply a bit of luck, but he keeps the ball on the ground, and his fastball velocity is in the <a href="https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/anthony-bender-669622?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb" rel="noopener">84th percentile</a> in the MLB.</p><p>Bender is still in the arbitration period of his contract. He is 30 years old, but the right-hander is under team control until the 2028 season. His current stats and contract situation could make him an ideal target for some playoff teams looking for bullpen help.</p><p>The Marlins are going to be sellers at the deadline, and these two players should be the first guys to go if Miami wants the best return.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The NL East is stacked with a couple of teams at the top with World Series or bust aspirations. After an encouraging Wild Card appearance in 2023, the Marlins took a step back in 2024, going 62-100 overall and missing the postseason, which has unfortunately been a trend for the franchise since its World Series title in 2003.</p><p>The Marlins are once again in the rebuilding phase and <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/farm-system-rankings-2025-preseason" rel="noopener">have built up their farm system</a> over the offseason with trades like the one for Luzardo. Sandy Alcantara is another player who has seen himself involved in various trade rumors. Unfortunately for Miami and the 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner, he is off to a dismal start in 2025. Alcantara currently has a record of 3-8 with a 6.88 ERA, which significantly hurts what the Marlins can get for him in a potential trade.</p><p>There are, however, a few players on this roster who should be rounding into their prime. That includes Wagaman, who was signed in free agency after playing for the Los Angeles Angels. The 27-year-old had to work his way up gradually from the minors to reach this stage and seems to be finding some comfort at this level. Wagaman’s home run was his fifth of the season.</p><p>Overall, the Marlins’ journey back into playoff contention will be a process. But every little move this franchise makes going forward is critical to building a larger, stable infrastructure. The improvement of the farm system is a very positive sign that Miami will work its way out of the bottom of the NL East over the next few years and back towards relevancy.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

And if they’re serious about making a legitimate World Series run in 2025, there’s one more bold move they must make—trading for Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr.</p><p>San Francisco is already halfway through its transformation from fringe contender to championship-caliber team. Devers, a three-time All-Star with elite power and a .504 slugging percentage this season, gives the lineup a cornerstone bat to build around. But if they stop there, it might not be enough.</p><p>Luis Robert Jr. is the missing piece.</p><p>Robert has quietly been one of the <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/luis-robert-jr-addresses-struggles-at-the-plate-and-trade-rumors" rel="noopener">most electric talents</a> in baseball since debuting with Chicago. When healthy, he’s a true five-tool player—a career .282 hitter with a cannon for an arm, elite speed, and Gold Glove-caliber defense in center. He’s blasted 38 homers in a season before and boasts an OPS north of .850 when locked in. For a Giants offense that currently ranks just 15th in MLB in runs scored, Robert would bring dynamic energy at the top of the order.</p><p>The proposed deal: the Giants send veteran outfielder Mike Yastrzemski, right-hander Tristan Beck, and 24-year-old lefty Juan Sánchez (Triple-A) to the White Sox. That’s a competitive package for a star with Robert’s tools, especially one with a modest contract—he’s owed just $15 million per year through 2027, with club options for 2028 and 2029.</p><h2><b>Luis Robert Jr would make the Giants a powerhouse, and a true threat to the Dodgers in the West</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Luis-Robert.jpg"><figcaption>Jim Cowsert-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>For the Giants, this trade would signal a full-throttle approach. Their rotation, headlined by ace Logan Webb, has been among the best in the National League. And it’s only going to get better with Justin Verlander nearing a return from injury. The 41-year-old future Hall of Famer has been ramping up in rehab and is expected to rejoin the club in early July. Pairing Verlander with Webb, Robbie Ray, and Hayden Birdsong gives San Francisco a playoff rotation no one wants to face.</p><p>Then there’s the bullpen—arguably the best in baseball. With flamethrower Camilo Doval closing games and a mix of elite arms like Taylor Rogers, Ryan Walker, and Randy Rodriguez bridging the gap, the Giants’ relief corps has locked down leads at a league-best rate. Their bullpen ERA sits at 2.67, good enough for the best bullpen ERA in baseball, and their collective WHIP is the lowest in the Majors.</p><p>Simply put, the infrastructure is in place. The Giants have built a pitching-first identity, and now they’ve added a legitimate offensive centerpiece in Devers. Winning in October requires talent, depth, and a willingness to strike when the moment is right. That moment is now.</p><p>The National League is wide open. The Giants, currently 41-31, are in prime position to make a run at the division or at least secure a top Wild Card spot. With the Dodgers dealing with injuries, the Diamondbacks hovering around .500, and the Padres still inconsistent, San Francisco has a narrow but real window to reclaim the NL West.</p><p>Manager Bob Melvin knows it. He lasted only three innings that game as the Marlins noticed a significant drop in his velocity.</p><p>The next day, the Marlins say Weathers was playing catch when he felt <a href="https://www.mlb.com/marlins/news/ryan-weathers-heads-to-60-day-il-with-left-lat-strain" rel="noopener">discomfort in his left shoulder</a>.</p><p>Weathers has made five starts in 2025 after starting the season on the IL.
