The payors (large-market clubs) will argue that insufficient revenue-sharing funds are being spent on player acquisition,” agent Seth Levinson told The Athletic.</p><p>“Hence, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the smaller markets compete for talent in the free-agent market to convince the payors that they are committed to putting a better product on the field.”</p><p>While the World Series Champion Los Angeles Dodgers have been blasted considerably for spending<a href="https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/payroll/_/year/2025"> over $350 million on their payroll</a>, which is just under $8 million more than the No. 2 team, the New York Mets, they have unquestionably put plenty of their revenue back on the field with a star-studded roster. The 79-83 Marlins, by contrast, paid just 19 percent of that total, falling $32.2 million below the $100 million threshold in 2025 at $67.8 million. While that number is still the most in MLB history, it’s been quite a while since the Yankees were a true threat in the postseason. 2024’s trip to the Fall Classic was New York’s first since defeating the Philadelphia Phillies in 2009. The AL Division Series loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, who defeated these same Bronx Bombers for the AL East title, showed how much work is needed to make the Yanks a true title contender once again.</p><p>The entire roster needs help, as the starting rotation, bullpen, and lineup could use additions. While players like free agents Kyle Tucker and Pete Alonso could <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/the-perfect-190-million-contract-yankees-must-offer-pete-alonso-to-steal-him-from-mets">certainly boost the Yankees’ offense,</a> the pitching staff is not without its flaws as well. Max Fried is set to return and headline the starting staff, with young guns Cam Schlittler, Luis Gil, and Will Warren also ready to take steps in their second and third seasons in the big leagues.</p><p>However, the rotation will be missing mainstays Gerrit Cole, Clarke Schmidt, and Carlos Rodon, at least for the first few weeks of the upcoming season. Adding at least one more arm to the rotation, preferably one that allows Cashman to then flip some of the team’s controllable pitching, like Gil or Warren, to acquire help elsewhere. In this scenario, the Miami <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-rumors-why-new-york-didnt-trade-for-sandy-alcantara">Marlins’ Sandy Alcantara feels like</a> a strong fit for the Bronx. As his first season returning from Tommy John surgery progressed, the former NL Cy Young Award winner looked more and more like himself. Luckily, those are two boxes that the Yankees can check off. In Gil or Warren, GM Brian Cashman and New York’s front office possess a replacement for Alcantara in the Marlins’ starting five. Gil might be the preferred option for Miami, so let’s say he’s the top player going back down south.</p><p>Shortstop George Lombard Jr., the Yankees’ top prospect, will likely only be available in a mega deal for one of the reigning Cy Young winners. Top pitching prospects Carlos Lagrange and Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz feel unlikely to leave as well. However, outfielder Spencer Jones…. he <a href="https://www.mlb.com/milb/prospects/yankees/" rel="noopener">might not be as untouchable.</a> Despite a season in which he reached Triple-A, it’s clear that Jones’ game still has some holes. Furthermore, if the Yankees sign Tucker or re-sign Bellinger, there’s not an open spot in the outfield for the former first-round pick.</p><p>Offering another piece, like starter Brock Selvidge or shortstop Kaeden Kent, could help seal a trade for Alcantara. While the price might be a bit high, it’s one the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/miami-marlins/marlins-news-sandy-alcantara-mixed-2026-update-owner">Yankees can afford to pay.</a> It’s also one they should consider over signing another expensive free agent arm. Will Cashman and the front office decide to pull the trigger on an arm that could emerge as yet another ace-level arm in New York’s rotation? The Los Angeles Dodgers proved that offseason talent acquisition is of the utmost importance, as they’ve won back-to-back World Series titles after being huge free agent spenders.</p><p>Most teams don’t have the payroll power of the Dodgers, though, which means adding talent in the trade market might be more optimal. So, check out the gallery to see the five best trade candidates during the 2025-26 MLB offseason.</p><h2><b>5. Sandy Alcantara, Miami Marlins, SP</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Sandy-Alcantara-2.jpg"><figcaption>Sam Navarro-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Sandy Alcantara had a pretty bad 2025 season, which included an incredibly slow start after returning from Tommy John surgery. This slow start meant that Alcantara’s value was at an all-time low, so the Miami Marlins didn’t trade him in hopes that his value would improve as more time passed after his surgery.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/miami-marlins/marlins-news-sandy-alcantara-reaches-miami-pitching-territory-phillies">Alcantara improved as the season went on</a>, and teams may now have more interest in trading for him. Alcantara won a Cy Young as recently as 2022, and at his best, he is one of the most talented starting pitchers in baseball. He still has nasty stuff; teams will just hope that his command returns to form. If it does, he should bounce back in the ERA department.</p><h2><b>4. Nolan Arenado, St. Louis Cardinals, 3B</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Nolan-Arenado.jpg"><figcaption>Eakin Howard-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Nolan Arenado has regressed in recent years. That doesn’t change the fact that he is one of the best defensive players in MLB history. While no longer the perennial Gold Glove infielder he once was, Arenado’s defense at the hot corner is still elite. Arenado is also coming off career lows in batting average and home runs in a non-COVID season, though.</p><p>The third baseman is trending the wrong way, which makes him a risky trade acquisition, but the Cardinals may see the writing on the wall and decide to get something while they still can for Arenado. If last season was just a down season, a trade partner could get Arenado at a cheap rate. Arenado has a no-trade clause, and <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/nolan-arenado-blocks-trade-cardinals-astros" rel="noopener">he rejected deals</a> to the Houston Astros and Los Angeles Angels last year. This go around, he may be more willing to accept a change of scenery, especially because it is obvious that St. Louis is done with him.</p><h2><b>3. Joe Ryan/Pablo Lopez, Minnesota Twins, SP</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Joe-Ryan_da13aa.jpg"><figcaption>Bill Streicher-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Minnesota Twins blew the ship up at the trade deadline. They dealt nearly everybody of note, including Carlos Correa, Harrison Bader, Griffin Jax, Louis Varland, Brock Stewart, Danny Coulombe, Ty France, and Willi Castro. Two of their trade chips who weren’t moved were Joe Ryan and Pablo Lopez. The team dealt 11 players in total in an effort to get their finances in check.</p><p>Minnesota will likely further their rebuild this offseason, and that could include dealing their two best pitchers now that both are in a better place to be moved. Ryan wasn’t dealt during the season because he is still on a cheap contract, and Lopez was hurt around the trade deadline. Both players are controllable for years to come and could return a decent haul for the Twins.</p><h2><b>2. Ketel Marte, Arizona Diamondbacks, 2B</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Ketel-Marte_55dad4.jpg"><figcaption>Denis Poroy-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/eugenio-suarez-trade-grades-mariners-diamondbacks"> Arizona Diamondbacks traded infielders Eugenio Suarez</a> and Josh Naylor in the midst of big seasons during the trade deadline. Ketel Marte could be the next to go. The second baseman has made the All-Star Game three times in total, including in each of the past two seasons.</p><p>Marte batted .283 with 28 home runs this past season. The Diamondbacks may be motivated to move him sooner rather than later, before a no-trade clause kicks in.</p><h2><b>1. MacKenzie Gore, Washington Nationals, SP</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/MacKenzie-Gore.jpg"><figcaption>Brett Davis-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>MacKenzie Gore is another player who was considered a<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/2025-mlb-trade-deadline-ranking-10-best-players-potentially-available"> trade candidate at the MLB trade deadline</a>. Gore is a former number three overall pick and a former elite prospect. He has lived up to his potential so far, as he made the All-Star Game for the Washington Nationals last season.</p><p>Gore was heavily sought after at the trade deadline because he looked like a Cy Young candidate for much of the year. He had a rough patch midway through the season, but he has the potential to be a true ace going forward. Now, they have another key front office piece in place.</p><p>The Marlins <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6774031/2025/11/03/marlins-promote-gabe-kapler-general-manager/" rel="noopener">have promoted</a> Gabe Kapler to general manager, via Brittany Ghiroli of The Athletic. He had previously served as assistant general manager. Prior to joining the Marlins, Kapler spent time as manager of both the Philadelphia Phillies and San Francisco Giants.</p><p>While they missed the playoffs for a second-straight year in 2025, Miami did show some signs of life. They went 79-83, which outside of their Wild Card season in 2023, is the franchise’s most wins since 2016. Young players such as Xavier Edwards, Kyle Stowers and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/miami-marlins/why-marlins-agustin-ramirez-will-win-nl-rookie-of-the-year-award">Augustin Ramirez are forming the core of the lineup</a>. Furthermore, Eury Perez looks like a star while Sandy Alcantara and Edward Cabrera are both top of the rotation guys, if they aren’t trade.</p><p>Kapler’s job will be helping the Marlins fill any holes on their roster. He will be working under president of baseball operations Peter Bendix, who ultimately will have the final say. However, Kapler has been with the Marlins since 2023. He has a strong understanding of what Miami wants to do and how Bendix wants to operate.</p><p>His came with many ups and downs. Kapler holds a 456-411 managerial record overall, leading the San Francisco Giants to the playoffs in 2021. However, after being ousted from that role, Kapler has transitioned to the front office.</p><p>The Marlins aren’t complaining, as they’ve now made him a major part of their offseason plans. How Miami chooses to operate will determine how serious they are about competing in 2025. As a result, Derek Jeter, David Ortiz, and Dontrelle Willis decided to engage in some nostalgia. </p><p>During an exchange, Willis <a href="https://x.com/MLBONFOX/status/1975659784465723706" rel="noopener">made the choice</a> to bring up the 2003 World Series, in which he said he struck out Jeter and he hasn’t forgotten. </p><p>“Cap is mad that I struck him out in the World Series, and he still has not forgiven me for that,” Willis said. It is hard to pinpoint the moment in which Willis struck out Jeter, but he did have to face Josh Beckett, who <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/arizona-diamondbacks/complete-list-world-series-mvps-who-has-won-award-history-year-by-year-results" rel="noopener">was the World Series MVP</a>. </p><p>Also, Jeter finished the series with a .346 batting average, along with nine hits, two RBIs, and five runs scored. </p><h2><b>Derek Jeter was caught in a moment of irony</b>.</h2><p>That friendly exchange between Jeter and Willis was ironic. The reason is that Jeter has a connection to both teams. Before joining Fox Sports, Jeter was CEO of the now Miami Marlins from 2017 to 2022. </p><p>During that time, he oversaw a team that he intentionally sought to rebuild by utilizing the farm system. In the process, he traded Giancarlo Stanton to the Yankees. While they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/miami-marlins/nothing-can-save-the-miami-marlins-except-getting-rid-of-derek-jeter" rel="noopener">went through a string of losing seasons</a>, the Marlins did make it to the playoffs in 2020. </p><p>Then, there is his time with the Yankees, which needs no explanation.
