Enter Milwaukee Brewers ace Freddy Peralta, who just completed one of the best seasons of his career and finds himself at the center of trade speculation this offseason.</p><p>Peralta is expected to finish in the top three in the NL Cy Young Award voting this offseason. The Brewers have an $8 million team option on him for next season that they will certainly pick up. At just $8 million for 2026, he represents tremendous value compared to what free agent starters will command this winter. Because of the franchise shake up, some major trades could be on the horizon.</p><p>When it comes to the Nationals, perhaps no player is more eye-catching than starting pitcher MacKenzie Gore. Already an All-Star an under team control through the 2027 season, Gore would be a controllable, top of the rotation starter for any team in need of pitching.</p><p>As the Nationals ponder their future, the right-hander was named fifth-most likely player to be traded this offseason, via Jim Bowden of The Athletic. Both the Boston Red Sox and San Diego Padres <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6738377/2025/10/23/mlb-offseason-trade-targets-tarik-skubal-jarren-duran/?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=mlbtw&amp;source=mlbtw" rel="noopener">were named as potential suitors</a>.</p><p>“He’s controllable for two more seasons, so the best time to trade him to maximize the return would be this offseason,” Bowden wrote. “It makes sense that his name is popping up everywhere. If the Red Sox don’t land him, watch for the Padres to push for a reunion.”</p><p>Paul Tobini, the Nationals new president of baseball operations, served in the the Red Sox’s front office since 2015. He has a strong understanding of Boston’s prospect pool and what it would take to get a deal done.</p><p>In turn, the Red Sox are still in need of some pitching. Garrett Crochet has proven to be their ace. However, Walker Buehler did not work out as the No. 2 in their one-two punch. Adding a player like Gore gives Boston some real firepower atop their rotation.</p><p>The Padres are well aware of what Gore brings to the table. They drafted him in 2017, before trading Gore to the Nationals in the deal that sent Juan Soto and Josh Bell to San Diego. Now, general manager AJ Preller may be considering a reunion.</p><p>San Diego is preparing to see Dylan Cease, Michael King and Nestor Cortes all enter free agency. They have pitchers like Nick Pivetta and Joe Musgrove, but it’s clear the Padres need another top of the line starter to compete in the National League. Gore would give them that and also <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/mlb-rumors-padres-real-run-mackenzie-gore-reunion-trade-deadline">provide the Padres with a full-circle moment</a>.</p><p>But of course, any trade comes down to what the Nationals are planning. Washington hasn’t made the playoffs since winning the World Series. Maybe a full-on rebuild is their best course of action.</p><p>If they were to do that, Gore would be their crown jewel. He is now likely to resume baseball activities around the All-Star break in 2026. Even if recovery proceeds smoothly, the 30-year-old would require extensive bullpen sessions and batting practice before starting a minor league rehab assignment, pushing any potential MLB return to late August or as a reliever toward the end of the season. Teams interested in signing him are likely to view him primarily as a 2027-season option.</p><p>Cortes was out of sync on the mound throughout the year. Then, after the New York Yankees traded him to the Milwaukee Brewers in the deal involving Devin Williams and Caleb Durbin, he allowed five home runs to his former team in his debut for Milwaukee, marking a historically poor start. However, the 2022 All-Star followed that performance with six shutout innings against the Cincinnati Reds, only to land on the injured list with a flexor strain, which was his second flexor injury in consecutive years.</p><p>After a brief rehab assignment, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-nestor-cortes-crazy-reaction-padres-trade">the Brewers traded Cortes to the Padres</a> for fifth outfielder Brandon Lockridge. Mike Shildt announced his retirement earlier this week, but there are some questions about the truth of what really happened. Ken Rosenthal doesn’t even believe <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-ken-rosenthal-mike-shildt-retirement">he retired on his own volition</a>. The facts will eventually come out, but for now, the Padres are aiming to find a true culture setter for a talented roster.</p><p>The roster is led by Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. The two superstars from the Dominican Republic are two of the best players in the game and have led the Padres to the postseason four times in the last six seasons. They were coached by veteran managers, Shildt and Bob Melvin. Things just did not work out with them in control, and General Manager A.J. Preller is scrambling to try to find the right guy.</p><p>Albert Pujols could be that guy.</p><p>The legendary player for the St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Angels wants to get into coaching and could very well be a manager for an MLB team in 2026. With Mike Shildt retired, Preller should put serious consideration into Pujols becoming the manager.</p><p>Let’s take a look at three reasons why A.J. Preller must do so.</p><h2><b>Reason No. 3 – Pujols is Serious About Coaching</b></h2><p>Pujols has been eager about coaching for a while now. He recently said that he was serious about it.</p><p>“For me, I’ve always been serious about everything that I do in this game,” Pujols told USA Today in March, “and now I’m serious about managing. This game has done so much for me, and now, I want to give back. I’m ready.”</p><p>This came as the current season was getting started. Pujols has had about half a year to put his name on a couple of teams’ lists.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-news-albert-pujols-interest-baltimore-amid-angels-connection">Pujols may interview for the Baltimore Orioles job</a>, as they have expressed interest. He has also already <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-angels/angels-news-albert-pujols-interviews-manager-job">interviewed for the Angels job</a>. There is no reason why the Padres shouldn’t be the third team on the list.</p><h2><b>Reason No. 2 – </b><b>Pujols Will Be a True Culture Setter</b></h2><p>The Machine is one of the top hitters of all time. You can make an argument that his prime seasons can go toe to toe with any hitter ever. He played for a long time and built relationships with many people. Baseball is a part of his blood, and his seriousness about coaching makes everyone believe he will be a great coach.</p><p>Pujols is currenlty the manager for Leones del Escogido in the DR. In one season, he <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/1ibsuvj/albert_pujols_wins_dominican_winter_league/#:~:text=Albert%20Pujols%20just%20led%20the,75%20Go%20to%20comments%20Share" rel="noopener">saw a lot of success</a>, winning the Serie Final and Caribbean Series.</p><p>The Padres have a clubhouse filled with personality. There have been many issues “within” as of late, as they have gone through an ownership change, as well as the ongoing chaos with Shildt’s departure. Bringing in Pujols would silence a lot of the doubt, and it would immediately prove that this ballclub is serious about the relationships in-house.</p><p>A prime example of a culture change that Pujols can bring is changing the approach at the plate. Under Shildt, the Padres played small ball. The slug was almost non-existent in clutch situations, and it hurt them in the postseason the last two seasons. You can count on the Padres’ bats to start to come alive under The Machine’s vision.</p><h2><b>Reason No. 1 – Pujols is a Perfect Mentor to Machado, Tatis Jr. </b></h2><p>Machado and Tatis are the stars of the team. The team goes wherever they take them. At the start of 2025, Tatis Jr and Machado played at a very high level. The Friars were one of the top teams in the league. They cooled off as the season progressed, and you really saw their slug and home run power fade. MLB is a long season, and it seemed that the motivation faded as well.</p><p>Pujols can come in and relate to the two superstars, growing up in the same country. He wouldn’t let their emotions get the best of them. Machado and Tatis have shown a ton of maturity over the years, and this change could be what they are missing to get them over the hump.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

During the 2025 season, he reportedly experienced sleep deprivation, chest pains, and hair loss, alongside <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-mike-shildt-death-threats-sports-bettors">death threats from sports bettors</a>.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-mike-shildt-heartbreaking-cubs-series">After the Padres’ elimination by the Chicago Cubs</a> in the National League Wild Card Series, Shildt informed Padres president of baseball operations A.J. Preller that he needed time to reflect. A week later, he decided to step away permanently.</p><p>The 57-year-old skipper has made it clear he does not intend to pursue another MLB position soon, but <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6715110/2025/10/14/san-diego-padres-mike-shildt-retirement-questions/" rel="noopener">remains open to the possibility</a>, per Dennis Lin of The Athletic.</p><p>“Never say never,” Shildt said. “But I have no desire to be in that big chair anytime soon. I’m going to enjoy a quality of life that I haven’t been enjoying my entire life.”</p><p>With his retirement, he walked away with two years left on his contract. Contrary to what many would expect, Shildt refused any payout from his 2024 extension, valued at over $2 million annually.</p><p>“I’ve been so darn blessed to make the money I’ve made in the game,” Shildt said. “But, gosh, I got to tell you, man, I have never been motivated by money.”</p><p>Despite speculation about internal conflicts, Shildt firmly denied that disagreements with Preller or the front office played a role in his decision.</p><p>“The thing that I appreciated about A.J. is you can have a very honest, healthy, transparent conversation with A.J.,” Shildt said. “It’s all for the greater good of us winning baseball games. So, I value that with him, and I’m always going to be grateful for him giving me this opportunity. And my only regret is that I wasn’t able to help fulfill the vision of Mr. (Peter) Seidler and A.J., and this organization’s passionate fan base to win a World Series.</p><p>“That’s my only regret.”</p><p>Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, Shildt began his baseball career as a high school and college coach before joining the St. Louis Cardinals organization as a scout and minor league instructor. Rising through the ranks, he earned multiple Minor League Manager of the Year honors and guided Johnson City to back-to-back Appalachian League titles (2009–2011).</p><p>Promoted to the Cardinals’ major league staff in 2017, Shildt took over as manager midway through 2018. Under his leadership, the Cardinals reached the 2019 National League Championship Series, and Shildt won the NL Manager of the Year award that same season.</p><p>In 2021, after leading the Cardinals to a record 17-game winning streak, the longest in franchise history, he was dismissed due to “philosophical differences.” He joined San Diego in 2022 as a player development consultant and ascended to the manager’s role in 2024, after the departure of Bob Melvin.</p><p>As has often been the case during Preller’s tenure, Shildt’s exit adds to the list of changes in the Padres’ dugout, the fifth under his leadership since 2014. Preller, who has one year remaining on his own contract, now faces the challenge of selecting Shildt’s successor.</p><p>Among rumored candidates are pitching coach Ruben Niebla, bench coach Brian Esposito, special assistants Scott Servais and A.J. Ellis, and former Angels manager Phil Nevin. The starting pitcher market is full of talent, headlined by Dylan Cease. However, the former may not get attention from the league’s biggest franchises.</p><p>The Los Angeles Dodgers are still fighting to defend their World Series title. However, Brandon Gomes and general managers around the league are getting ready for the winter, regardless of whether their team is still playing or not. Cease is one of the more interesting free agents available. The veteran is a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-dylan-cease-hits-mark-5th-straight-season">top-tier talent when he was on for the San Diego Padres</a>.</p><p>Cease put together an average playoff start in the National League Wild Card Series. However, it was not enough to help San Diego advance. Now, his future is up in the air. Additionally, the stress and toll of being the manager began to wear him out.</p><p>Along the way, Shildt experienced chest pains, hair loss, and bad sleeping habits. Ultimately, the Padres <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-mike-shildt-heartbreaking-cubs-series">lost to the Chicago Cubs in the NLDS</a>. With that, Shildt wanted to make it clear that he gave it his all and fought through the stress.</p><p>“I don’t want people to think I checked out or wasn’t engaged or wasn’t doing my job,” Shildt said. “No, that’s not the case. I tell myself, and I have done it since day one of this job, regardless of level … I’m going bell to bell. I’m going to give it everything I got. Because I owe it to the team and the players. So, I did that.”</p><p>“But I can tell you I was sick a lot. I just wasn’t feeling good. I was run down. And I wasn’t sleeping. And it’s nobody’s fault. It’s just day-to-day stress. But, you know, just unhealthy, man, and sometimes you’ve just got to take care of you, you know?”</p><p>After losing to the Cubs, Shildt told general manager AJ Preller that he was looking to recover at home. Also, Preller said that he could tell Shildt was “worn down” towards the tail end of the season.</p><h2><b>Who will be the next Padres manager?</b></h2><p>Before announcing his retirement, Shildt was the manager of the Padres for two seasons. As he focused on regaining his overall health, the Padres are looking for a new manager.</p><p>On Wednesday, rumors swirled that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-rumors-is-brucy-bochy-a-legitimate-option-to-replace-mike-shildt">Bruce Bochy might be the replacement</a> for Shildt. This sudden retirement brings up a ton of internal questions related to the ballclub. Ken Rosenthal, among others, believes that Shildt <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-ken-rosenthal-mike-shildt-retirement">may not have actually gone out on his own terms</a>. Shildt announced in his statement that he came to the conclusion in the middle of the season.</p><p>Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. will now await their 6th manager to be hired. This franchise is a serious mess, despite finding its way to the playoffs in back-to-back seasons with at least 90 wins. Shildt was one of the best coaches in Padres’ history; however, the belief is that the Friars need to go in a different direction.</p><p>Former Padres manager Bruce Bochy has seen his name surface in rumors. However, it does not seem likely that he would accept the offer if given. The Padres are aiming to hire within the organization.</p><p>Dennis Lin, who covers the Padres for The Athletic, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6715110/2025/10/14/san-diego-padres-mike-shildt-retirement-questions/" rel="noopener">mentioned in his article</a> who the real candidates could be.</p><p>“Flaherty, now the Cubs’ bench coach, is expected to again receive consideration for the managerial opening in San Diego, league sources said. Some of the same sources anticipate that other candidates will include Padres pitching coach Ruben Niebla, bench coach Brian Esposito, special assistants Scott Servais and A.J. Ellis, and former Los Angeles Angels manager Phil Nevin.”</p><p>“Multiple team sources said former Padres manager Bruce Bochy, 70, is not expected to be a serious candidate to return to San Diego.”</p><p>Bochy left the Padres for the San Francisco Giants, and he immediately won three championships in five years. It was San Diego’s second-straight postseason appearance under Shildt.</p><h2><b>Padres GM AJ Preller on the manager selection process</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Former-Mariners-manager-Scott-Servais.jpg"><figcaption>Kirby Lee-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Padres’ search for a new manager began in earnest on Tuesday, and the good news for Preller is there are plenty of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-5-best-options-replace-mike-shildt-manager">internal and external candidates</a> who would make sense for the job.</p><p>Internally, pitching coach Ruben Niebla and special assistant for player development Scott Servais would make sense.</p><p>“We have some strong internal candidates and that’ll be one thing they bring to the table is the knowledge of the organization, our roster, our players, our people,” Preller said. “I think there’s a lot of positives to that but I’m also anxious to get a sense of some people outside the organization.”</p><p>Asked what he’s looking for in a new manager, Preller listed the priorities he wanted to see.</p><p>“Somebody that knows the game very, very well is always part of it,” he said. “I think somebody that can relate to people and players, has the ability to be honest with players but understands the way to deliver messages may be different for different guys. Somebody that at the end of the day is valuing the organization. It’s all about the organization and trying to win championships.
