And adding injury to insult, two Tigers were forced to leave the game early. Baez is believed to have avoided the worst case scenario. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said the former Gold Glove winner is day-to-day, per The Athletic’s Cody Stavenhagen. After it didn’t go away, he called Hinch and a trainer to the mound and ultimately left the game. “This time of year, what we’ve got going forward, I didn’t risk doing something that causes me to really miss some time,” Skubal explained.</p><p>Still, it appears the Tigers dodged a bullet with their ace. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-tarik-skubal-optimistic-message-amid-injury-concerns">Skubal told reporters that he’s optimistic</a> about his condition. The veteran lefty will undergo further testing to assess the severity of the injury.</p><p>Skubal allowed four runs on four hits and no walks in 3.1 innings. He struck out two Marlins. The loss drops him to 13-5 on the season.</p><p>Baez was injured during his first at-bat and unable to continue. The 12th-year pro has had a strong season with Detroit as he’s become a valuable chess piece for Hinch. Baez began playing center field for the first time in his career this year. On Friday, the Marlins organized their event so that fans can purchase hot dogs for one dollar each, allowing them to buy as many at an affordable price.</p><p>This is something the team’s broadcast took full advantage of. They held them to just four hits after 31 at-bats, conceding one homer in the fourth inning. Sandy Alcantara earned the win as he lasted seven innings on the mound, striking out eight batters while allowing four hits and one run.</p><p>Miami improved to a 69-79 record on the season, holding the third spot in the NL East Division standings. They are seven games behind the New York Mets and 19 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies.</p><p>The Marlins will prepare for Game 2 of their series against the Tigers. Washington fell one game short of a season-high five straight victories. But there’s still reason to celebrate as Daylen Lile added his name to the franchise record book.</p><p>Lile hit his ninth triple of the season against the Marlins. That <a href="https://x.com/NationalsComms/status/1965931230060491239" rel="noopener">ties him</a> with Bryce Harper for the most triples by a rookie in team history, per Nationals Communications. Lile now has four triples in the last six games and five three-baggers so far in September.</p><p>The former second-round draft pick made his major league debut for the Nationals in May. He hit his <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/washington-nationals/nationals-daylen-lile-hits-1st-mlb-home-run-vs-rockies">first MLB home run</a> in June but struggled when first getting called up. However, Lile has settled in for a strong rookie campaign.</p><h2><b>Daylen Lile is coming for Bryce Harper’s triples record</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Bryce-Harper-1.jpg"><figcaption>Geoff Burke-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>On the season the 22-year-old outfielder is slashing .286/.330/.459 with 29 RBI and 42 runs scored. But he’s been red-hot in September. Lile entered Wednesday’s game against the Marlins slashing .424/.457/.879 in his last eight games. Then he went 2-4 with an RBI and run scored in Wednesday’s losing effort, extending his hitting streak to 10 games.</p><p>And Lile recorded his record-tying ninth triple in just 75 games. Harper originally set the mark in 139 games at the age of 19.</p><p>Of course, Harper received Rookie of the Year honors in his 2012 debut. And he would go on to win his first NL MVP Award in his age-22 season. But Lile now joins him with the most triples in franchise history. Although, that history only dates back to 2005.</p><p>James Wood is also enjoying a strong age-22 season. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/washington-nationals/nationals-news-james-wood-ronald-acuna-jr-mike-trout-rare-mlb-history">Wood joined an exclusive group</a> this month by recording his 27th home run, 76th walk and 15th stolen base of the year. Ronald Acuna Jr. and Mike Trout are the only other players in baseball history to reach those heights at 22 or younger.</p><p>After losing eight straight games, Washington has heated up. The team has won seven of its last nine games and five of its last six matchups against Miami.</p><p>While the Nationals have some exciting pieces that could lead to a bright future, they’ve long been out of the playoff picture. The emergence of young players on Miami’s roster played a big part. Now, Marlins catcher Agustin Ramirez is a lead candidate for the National League Rookie of the Year award with Drake Baldwin and Isaac Collins.</p><p>Ramirez is not the only young player to have a standout season for the Marlins. However, the rookie might be the best of the group years into the future. His mix of production at the plate and defense behind it make him a perfect fit in McCullough’s long-term plans. Despite his clear talent, the 24-year-old is not receiving the attention he deserves in the NL ROY conversation.</p><p>As a player, Ramirez still has a list of improvements to make. However, the numbers he has put up in his first Major League Baseball season are worthy of award consideration. His team has seen players like <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/miami-marlins/marlins-news-javier-sanojas-achievement-wasted-loss-blue-jays">Javier Sanoja set franchise marks throughout the Marlins’ 2025 season</a>. Even though he has not had many of those games, he will play a big part in the team’s turnaround.</p><p>McCullough’s team has some hope for the first time in a while. The Marlins are near the bottom of the standings for now, but things are trending in the right direction. The continued development of Ramirez and other young standouts will help Miami re-enter the realm of contention in the NL East. Until then, the team can put its efforts into endorsing Ramirez’s NL ROY campaign.</p><p>Ramirez is a long shot to win the award when compared to Baldwin or Collins. Even though Miami stayed semi-attached to the top squads in the NL East, it did not last long. Now, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/miami-marlins/marlins-news-clayton-mccullough-kyle-stowers-new-oblique-strain">injuries to Kyle Stowers and other Marlins</a> have the offense in another lull. However, one player has been an anchor, bringing stability to an ever-changing order. If nothing else, Ramirez is a calming presence in the lineup.</p><p>It did not take long for Ramirez to get called up to join the Marlins. Since arriving, the catcher quickly went through an acclimation period and then started to produce. The result is one of the team’s most well-rounded hitters when it comes to balancing power with average. Heading into Wednesday’s games, Ramirez has <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/stats/_/id/5132014/agustin-ramirez" rel="noopener">28 doubles and 19 home runs</a> on the season so far.</p><p>Those totals do not jump off the page if they came from a veteran player. However, the fact that Ramirez put up those numbers in his first season is noteworthy. He leads the team in doubles and is second in home runs, playing a key role in the offense. Without him, McCullough’s team might have left up to 61 RBIs on the table this season, which would have made its record even worse.</p><p>Ramirez is not a flashy player, something that works against him in the NL ROY conversation. However, he has not had time to make any splashy moves this season. Instead he put his head down and went to work every day. That kind of consistency and production is tough to ignore, even for strict voters. The main question is whether or not it is enough to get win the award.</p><h2>Ramirez has done the most with the situation handed to him</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Agustin-Ramirez-story-4.22.jpg"><figcaption>Sam Navarro-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>No single player will turn the Marlins around on their own. However, Ramirez’s arrival marked the first step in the right direction in Miami. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/miami-marlins/marlins-news-agustin-ramirez-makes-modern-era-mlb-history-unreal-start">Marlins catcher made history early in the season</a> and kept on turning heads all year long. While he received plenty of opportunity with his team, other rookies had the chance to contribute to a winning team. That means a lot to award voters.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/milwaukee-brewers/brewers-news-milwaukee-magic-continues-walk-off-comeback-win-mets">Collins has given clutch hitting to the Milwaukee Brewers</a>. Even Baldwin has stepped into a significant role with the Atlanta Braves. However, both players are flanked by veterans who take the pressure off of them. Without Stowers on the field, the bulk of the offensive responsibility lies on Ramirez’s shoulders. It is a lot to put on a rookie, but he has yet to crumble under the pressure.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/atlanta-braves/why-braves-drake-baldwin-will-win-nl-rookie-of-the-year-award">Baldwin’s case to win the NL ROY Award is a good one</a>. However, Ramirez should not give up and make the most of the games he has left. He has the body of work it takes to steal the award if he finished the year well. While he was able to advance to a rehab assignment, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/miami-marlins/marlins-news-clayton-mccullough-kyle-stowers-new-oblique-strain">an unfortunate setback has now halted Stowers’ return in its tracks</a>.</p><p>The Marlins pulled the outfielder off of his assignment after suffering an injury to his right oblique. While it came on a seemingly innocuous swing, Stowers immediately felt something wrong. Now, he has revealed exactly <a href="https://x.com/kevin_barral/status/1965603638023467178" rel="noopener">how his new injury came to be</a>, via Kevin Barral of of Fish on First.</p><p>“Didn’t really think too much of it because when you’re coming back from an injury, just kind of part of the process, sometimes, getting the rest of the body going,” Stowers said. “Next day, I didn’t anticipate getting very nervous and a lot of adrenaline for the first rehab game. He leads the team in home runs, RBIs and batting average, amongst players with at least 100 plate appearances. Furthermore, Stower’s 3.6 Wins Above Replacement leads the team as he is one of only two players to have a WAR over three.</p><p>The Marlins still have some holes to fill before truly being playoff contenders. But they know having Stowers in their outfield is the first step. However, injuries have held the All-Star from finishing his impressive 2025 campaign strong.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/miami-marlins/marlins-news-marlins-all-star-kyle-stowers-to-miss-multiple-weeks-with-concerning-injury">Stowers was placed on the injured list</a> with a left oblique strain in mid-August. He was able to start a rehab assignment by September, but things didn’t go as the Marlins had hoped. Miami pulled Stowers <a href="https://x.com/IsaacAzout/status/1965113891685593448" rel="noopener">off that assignment</a> after he suffered the setback, via Isaac Azout of Fish on First.</p><p>Now, manager Clayton McCullough has explained exactly what that setback was. Stowers <a href="https://x.com/kevin_barral/status/1965515278659539230" rel="noopener">has suffered an injury to his right oblique</a>, via Kevin Barral of Fish on First. The Marlins plan to approach the situation cautiously based on where they are in the season.</p><p>“Right oblique strain pulled him out of rehab,” McCullough said. “Not sure exactly how long that’s going to be. We know where we’re at in the calendar. So halting the rehab right now and I think it’ll take a couple of days to see what that downtime potentially looks like moving forward.”</p><p>Before going down with injury, Stowers hit .288 with 25 home runs, 73 RBI and five stolen bases over 117 games. He leads WAR with his 3.6 mark alongside home runs and RBI. As the Marlins try to inch closer to playoff contention, Stowers will be in the middle of any offensive success they find.</p><p>But with a 66-78 record and 10 games out of a Wild Card spot, the Marlins aren’t going to risk it. The injury setback is certainly concerning. Star shortstop <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/philadelphia-phillies/phillies-news-trea-turner-leaves-sundays-game-with-hamstring-injury">Trea Turner exited in the seventh inning</a> of a 5–4 defeat to the Marlins with a right hamstring strain, <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/46188422/phillies-trea-turner-leaves-game-hamstring-strain" rel="noopener">raising immediate concerns</a> for a team eyeing a deep October run.</p><p>Turner had just reached on a throwing error by Otto Lopez when he felt the issue flare up. He quickly removed himself from the game, walking into the dugout before heading to the clubhouse with the training staff. “It was just kind of grabbing on me. It didn’t feel good,” Turner said afterward. “If I could have kept going, I would have. If not, get out of there and try to limit the damage.” Edmundo Sosa replaced him at shortstop and on the bases.</p><p>The 32-year-old has been one of the National League’s best all-around players this season. Turner leads the league with 179 hits and carries a .305 batting average, while also sitting near the top in stolen bases with 36. His bat continued to deliver on Sunday — he launched his 15th home run of the year in the sixth inning to help the Phillies claw closer. He strained his left hamstring last season and missed six weeks. “Hopefully, not as bad as that,” Turner said. “Try to get back as fast as you can and get ready for that last little stretch and hopefully, the postseason push.”</p><p>Manager Rob Thomson expressed both worry and optimism. “There’s some concern there, obviously,” Thomson said. “He’s having a great year, he’s a big part of this ball club and I want to keep people healthy, especially coming down the stretch here. We’ll know more tomorrow.” Turner is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday.</p><p>The timing could hardly be worse for Philadelphia. The Phillies sit atop the NL East with a seven-game lead over the Mets, but the upcoming four-game series against New York looms large. While the division lead is still comfortable, the Phillies are chasing the Milwaukee Brewers for the National League’s No. 1 seed, currently trailing by 4½ games. However, Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara kept the Phillies chasing shadows on the mound and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/miami-marlins/10-greatest-miami-marlins-players-of-all-time-ranked-gallery">added his name to the franchise record books</a> while at it.</p><p>Alcantara threw six strong innings, climbing past <a href="https://x.com/Marlins/status/1964431549241446718" rel="noopener">900 career strikeouts</a> for Miami, a club only Ricky Nolasco had joined with 1,001 strikeouts. The outing came a day before Alcantara’s 30th birthday.</p><p>Alcantara (8-12) struck out four and walked one, allowing seven hits and four runs over six frames. The Marlins’ right-hander faced early adversity when Phillies superstar Bryce Harper crushed a first-inning fastball for a two-run homer, his 24th of the season.</p><p>Aside from that, Alcantara’s primary challenge came in the fourth inning, when three of the five hits he surrendered came on balls struck below 85 mph, including an Eric Wagaman double and an RBI infield single from Javier Sanoja that cut the deficit to 4-2.</p><p>Miami manager Clayton McCullough praised Alcantara’s composure, noting that the ace maintained focus even after 94 pitches through five innings. Alcantara leaned heavily on his changeup and curveball while utilizing a full five-pitch repertoire, generating ten whiffs overall, four via his four-seam fastball. For the fourth game in a row, keeping the momentum going, he made it to the sixth inning.</p><p>Opposing him, former Marlins starter Jesus Luzardo showcased his revamped pitching arsenal for the Phillies. Luzardo (13-6) struck out eight over six innings of two-run ball, giving up five hits and four walks. The southpaw heavily relied on his sweeper, throwing it 48% of the time and generating ten of his fourteen whiffs with the pitch, while also collecting six of his eight punchouts. Working around runners like a pro, Luzardo kept the Marlins at bay.</p><p>Philadelphia padded its lead in the fourth inning with a run-scoring single from Harrison Bader and a sacrifice fly from Bryson Stott, while Brandon Marsh contributed two doubles on the day.</p><p>As the game wound down, Miami tried to rally, including Wagaman’s double and Sanoja’s RBI single, but the Marlins were unable to close the gap. However, there is little that he could say to help his team secure a playoff spot. Instead, the team’s focus should shift to free agents like Tomoyuki Sugano, Tyler O’Neill, and Luke Weaver this winter.</p><p>Miami’s season has been full of ups and downs. On one hand, players like Edward Cabrera and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/miami-marlins/marlins-news-javier-sanojas-achievement-wasted-loss-blue-jays">Javier Sanoja have emerged as key pieces of the Marlins’ future</a>. On the other, veterans like Sandy Alcantara survived the trade deadline and put the team in a tough position heading into the offseason. However, the team has the pieces in place to be a contender in future years.</p><p>Teams like the Chicago White Sox and Marlins are very similar. Each of them have an intriguing mix of young talent and veterans that could grow together. However, the older players have injury histories that might not make them a good fit on their rosters long-term. At this point, each team’s front office could play a big role in the development of the team moving forward.</p><p>For the Marlins, the team has enough money to make some interesting moves in free agency. However, Miami does not have the capital to pursue the top names on the market like Pete Alonso or Dylan Cease. Despite the limitations that come with being in a small market, McCullough and the front office have an interesting case to make to potential additions in the winter.</p><p>While the Marlins likely won’t bring in a big name before next season, there are still good players available. All it takes is some cagey moves and picking the right talent to bring in. Here are three players Miami should pursue.</p><h2>Outfielder Tyler O’Neill</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Tyler-ONeill.jpg"><figcaption>James A. Pittman-Imagn Images.</figcaption></figure><p>O’Neill’s 2025 season has been an interesting one. The outfielder made a name for himself with the Boston Red Sox last year, making him one of the more attractive names on the market last offseason. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/tyler-oneill-orioles-agree-to-huge-49-5-million-contract">O’Neill joined the Baltimore Orioles on a massive deal</a>, and the team thought he could be the slugger that the team needed to get over the hump in the American League East.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-news-tyler-oneill-lineup-scratch-vs-cubs">Unfortunately for O’Neill, injuries</a> and inconsistency have him at the wrong end of a lot of criticism. However, he has a chance to find a new home if he decides to opt out of his contract with two years left on his deal. If he makes that choice and bets on himself, he needs to find a team willing to let him play with freedom without burying him in expectations.</p><p>The young bats on the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/miami-marlins/marlins-epic-walk-off-grand-slam-has-mlb-world-buzzing">Marlins have had clutch moments this season</a>. However, Miami has struggled to swing its bats with any kind of power this season. As a team, their <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/stats/team/_/view/batting/table/batting/sort/homeRuns/dir/desc" rel="noopener">132 home runs</a> on the season ranks near the bottom of the league. If nothing else, O’Neill comes in as a player who can hit some home runs and bring some rhythm to a Marlins offense that could really use it.</p><h2>Starting pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Tomoyuki-Sugano.jpg"><figcaption>Darren Yamashita-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>In an age where players coming from Japan enjoy a lot of success in Major League Baseball, Sugano is another great example. The Orioles have dealt with injuries to their pitching staff all season, but their rookie has been consistent. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-news-orioles-fans-tomoyuki-suganos-admission-1st-mlb-win">Sugano turned heads at the beginning of his career</a>, even if he started to get quiet as the season went on. In the right situation, he could be elite.</p><p>The Marlins’ starting rotation is in a state of flux. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/miami-marlins/1-disappointing-player-marlins-must-trade-offseason">Alcantara’s future is the biggest decision that McCullough and the front office need to make</a> in the offseason. If the team moves on from the former National League Cy Young Award winner, it needs a replacement. Sugano can come in and be that pitcher on a small deal that gives Miami flexibility in its staff in the future.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-news-tomoyuki-sugano-championship-message">Sugano had lofty expectations for the Orioles</a> before the season began. Unfortunately for him and Baltimore, the team was unable to overcome a tough start. However, the starter has done more than enough to garner interest from teams around the league. It would have to be at the right price, but Sugano could be a key addition to Miami’s starting rotation.</p><h2>Relief pitcher Luke Weaver</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Yankees-relief-pitcher-Luke-Weaver-30-reacts-after-closing.jpg"><figcaption>© Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-stories/yankees-news-luke-weaver-completes-wild-mlb-feat-2000-mariano-rivera">Weaver burst onto the scene during the New York Yankees’ playoff run</a> last season. However, New York brought in Devin Willams in the offseason to be the new closer. Despite the addition, Weaver has had time as the Yankees’ closer amid struggles from the former All-Star in his first season in New York. After the trade deadline, Weaver might be the odd man out.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-yankees-luke-weaver-says-previous-feeling-good-claim-may-be-a-lie-now">Weaver has endured his own struggles this season</a>. Despite that, he is a pitcher who could easily find a new home this winter if he wants to test the market this winter. The Marlins are one team who would jump at the chance to bring in an elite closer with playoff experience to a roster with almost none of it. Miami should heavily consider pursuing Weaver when the time comes.</p><p>The Marlins have everything they need to build a good roster moving forward. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/miami-marlins/marlins-news-kyle-stowers-world-series-heroics">Miami’s young talent, headlined by Kyle Stowers</a>, is poised for a big step forward in 2026.
