While his early years were solid but unspectacular, his career truly blossomed after joining San Francisco in 1997 at age 29.</p><p>Over six seasons with the Giants, the 57-year-old posted a bWAR of 31.6, contributing 175 home runs and 689 RBI while slashing .297/.368/.535. He excelled as a right-handed hitter in a ballpark often challenging for righties and utilized the gaps effectively, hitting 247 of his career 560 doubles in San Francisco.</p><p>Kent’s peak came in the early 2000s, earning five All-Star selections, four Silver Sluggers, and the 2000 National League MVP. That year, he posted a .334/.424/.596 slash line with 33 home runs and 125 RBI while playing alongside Giants teammate Barry Bonds. Kent’s 1,518 career RBI ranks third among second basemen, and his 377 home runs make him the all-time leader at the position.</p><p>Overall, Kent finished his career with a .290/.356/.500 slash line, 2,461 hits, 560 doubles, 1,320 runs, and 55.4 WAR. According to JAWS, he is ranked among the top 22 second basemen in history.</p><p>After 10 years on the BBWAA ballot, Kent’s vote share peaked at 46.5% in 2023, but his candidacy fell short of the 75% needed for election. Nonetheless, the Contemporary Era Committee recognized his contributions, making him the only candidate elected from a ballot that included Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Carlos Delgado, Don Mattingly, Dale Murphy, Gary Sheffield, and Fernando Valenzuela.</p><p>Delgado received nine votes, while Mattingly and Murphy each earned six. Bonds, Clemens, Sheffield, and Valenzuela received fewer than five votes, rendering them ineligible for the next Contemporary Era ballot in 2028 under a new rule. Chavez is a respected former player who had experience with 9 Major League teams.</p><p>Chavez was a long reliever throughout most of his career and he made 657 appearances and had a 51-66 record with a 4.27 ERA. He played six seasons with the Atlanta Braves, and he also had a 4-year stint with the Oakland A’s. His other big-league associations were with the Texas Rangers, Pittsburgh Pirates, Los Angeles Angels, Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs, Kansas City Royals and the Dodgers.</p><h2><b>Giants are hoping that managerial change will deliver big results</b></h2><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/mlb-rumors-giants-latest-team-mentioned-kyle-schwarber-suitor">The Giants</a> finished the season with an 81-81 record. With the Detroit Tigers’ Tarik Skubal potentially headed toward free agency next year, the Giants suddenly have a pitcher they could be chasing to improve their starting rotation. But should they chase the Tigers’ ace?</p><p>San Francisco <a href="https://www.mlb.com/stats/team/pitching/era?split=sp&amp;sortState=asc" rel="noopener">finished 17th in starting pitching ERA</a>, producing mixed results last season. Therefore, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-rumors-reporter-san-francisco-zac-gallen-free-agency">Giants continue to chase starting pitchers</a> and look to field a team that can make a playoff run in 2026. After <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-signing-dylan-cease-3-reasons-backfire">losing Dylan Cease to the Toronto Blue Jays,</a> the Giants may need to replace one of their top pitchers. A rotation that includes Logan Webb, an aging Justin Verlander, Robbie Ray, Jordan Hicks, and Kyle Harrison needs someone better.</p><p>That is where Skubal comes in. While the Giants have high-quality starting pitchers, acquiring Skubal could put them over the edge. Here is why they need to do it.</p><h2><b>The Giants need a shutdown ace</b></h2><p>Some might argue that the Giants already have a shutdown ace. Webb has a good season, going 15-11 with a 3.22 ERA and 224 strikeouts (third in the majors). Meanwhile, Ray went 11-8 with a 3.65 ERA. Both are good, above-average pitchers. However, neither is a shutdown pitcher.</p><p>With Skubal, the Giants would get a shutdown pitcher who has won the AL Cy Young over two consecutive seasons. Skubal went 13-6 with a 2.21 ERA over 31 starts. He had 241 strikeouts (second in the majors) and 0.89 WHIP (first in the majors). His overaching metrics are off the charts, and someone the Giants could definitely use.</p><p>For context, the Giants have not had a true shutdown ace since Madison Bumgarner. When he was their ace, they won three titles, and they had often were the top of the class, which is different from the current landscape.</p><h2><b>Skubal would challenge the Dodgers</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Why-Giants-must-trade-for-Tigers-Tarik-Skubal.jpg"><figcaption>© Steven Bisig-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Giants don’t have a starting pitcher who can consistently challenge the Los Angeles Dodgers. If they were to trade for Skubal, they would have an ace who could shut things down.</p><p>The one drawback is that Skubal has not fared that well in his one appearance against the Dodgers. So far, he is 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA in two starts against the boys in blue. Still, his talent as a starting pitcher could fare well in consistent battles with the Dodgers. He has also dominated Shohei Ohtani. So far, Ohtani is just 1 for 9 (.111) with just a single against the Tigers’ ace. That means that Skubal has won the battle more often than not against the Japanese superstar.</p><p>If the Giants trade for Skubal, they will have a starting pitcher who can finally challenge the two-time defending World Series champs. Then, they might vault themselves into title considerations.</p><h2><b>Skubal would give them a title chance</b></h2><p>Skubal would give the Giants a great chance to win the World Series. While the Tigers have sputtered in the playoffs in back-to-back seasons, it was partially thanks to his efforts that they got there in the first place. Before their collapse, the Tigers were dominating the majors and winning games consistently. Skubal would give the Giants the same edge.</p><p>The Giants would look to go back to their title-winning roots by building a winner with elite starting pitching. Acquiring Skubal would put them on the right track toward making the playoffs and potentially winning their first title in over a decade. He will continued what has been a storied legacy of coaching infielders.</p><p>Washington began his coaching career as the Athletics first base coach in 1996 before becoming third base/infield coach. After an impressive stint guiding the then-Oakland infielders, he was hired to manage the Texas Rangers. The Rangers went 664-611 under Washington, winning the American League pennant twice.</p><p>But after the 2014 season, Texas decided to move on. Naturally, he returned to the Athletics as their infield/third base coach. This stint didn’t last long though as Washington joined the Atlanta Braves prior to the 2017 season. He won his first World Series title working as their third base coach.</p><p>The Angels liked what they saw and decided to give Washington another chance at being manager. That experiment ended with a 99-137 record. While Washington can’t front all the blame for Los Angeles’ struggles, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-angels/angels-news-ron-washington-ray-montgomery-manager-decisions">Angels decided to move on nonetheless</a>.</p><p>Now, he’ll be looking to help mold the Giants’ infield defense. With Matt Chapman at third base, he’ll have a strong foundation to work with. Washington will also play a big role in helping Rafael Devers transition to first base.</p><p>Washington’s MLB career has taken him all over the league and given him the opportunity to coach countless ball players. According to Susan Slusser of The San Francisco Chronicle, the Giants <a href="https://x.com/SplashHitPod/status/1995987717768028625" rel="noopener">have talked</a> to starting pitcher Zac Gallen in MLB free agency.</p><p>“I certainly know, and I know this beyond a reasonable doubt, they have talked to Zac Gallen,” Slusser said, via Splash Hit Territory.</p><p>Gallen, 30, was an All-Star in 2023 with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He finished third in NL Cy Young voting that season after finishing the campaign with a 3.47 ERA and a career-high 220 strikeouts.</p><p>Gallen’s performance in 2025 trended in a different direction, as the right-handed hurler recorded a lackluster 4.83 ERA. He still managed to make 33 starts while striking out 175 hitters, but it certainly wasn’t how Gallen envisioned his contract year going. As a result, he may need to settle for either a short-term contract or a potentially underwhelming multi-year deal.</p><p>Signing Gallen makes sense for a number of reasons for the Giants. San Francisco’s primary need is offense, but adding another pitcher or two would not hurt. Gallen has also pitched fairly well against San Francisco throughout his career, turning in an 8-6 record and a 3.81 ERA.</p><p>A Giants’ Gallen addition would hurt an NL West rival while boosting their pitching rotation.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/arizona-diamondbacks/diamondbacks-rumors-arizona-bring-zac-gallen-merrill-kelly-back-free-agency">Diamondbacks may have interest</a> in bringing Gallen back. Gallen has also been <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/mlb-rumors-mets-yankees-battle-zac-gallen">mentioned as a possible free agency candidate</a> for the New York Yankees or New York Mets. Other ball clubs could inquire about Gallen as well. The San Francisco Giants are <a href="https://x.com/jonmorosi/status/1995878062605697313" rel="noopener">hoping to make a strong push</a> for the slugger, per MLB Network.</p><p>The Giants will have plenty of competition for the slugger’s services. The Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox and Cincinnati Reds are also in the mix. Even the struggling Pittsburgh Pirates have been rumored to be putting together a package for Schwarber.</p><p>The slugger just finished an outstanding 2025 season with the Phillies. He finished the regular season with 56 home runs, and was the National League home runs leader. He also led MLB in RBIs. The Phillies made the postseason, losing an NLDS series to the Los Angeles Dodgers.</p><p>San Francisco finished the 2025 season with a 81-81 record. Even though the slugger is in his 30s, analysts believe he will be <a href="https://www.threads.com/@jeffpassan/post/DRssMOgjQ5T?xmt=AQF0zanfaq0pxaUlEYCPDwycvubQijp2OJKY1axuLnqzzCs" rel="noopener">making plenty of bank</a> in his next contract.</p><p>“Kyle Schwarber: The bellwether of the class. Schwarber’s market is healthy. He’s going to get years, and he’s going to get AAV, and at this point, he might be the likeliest of the big free agents to sign first,” MLB reporter Jeff Passan posted on Threads. “Unclear if something gets done before the meetings, but I’d be surprised if they end and he doesn’t have a team.”</p><p>The Phillies are seen as a favorite to land Schwarber, Passan said. Sure, but according to The Athletic’s Andrew Baggarly, one name who will not be on the proverbial shopping list for Buster Posey and company is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-rumors-strong-indication-sf-tatsuya-imai-despite-buzz">three-time NPB All-Star Tatsuya Imai</a>, as San Francisco <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/mlb-news-insider-urges-tatsuya-imai-sign-3-teams-take-down-dodgers" rel="noopener">isn’t looking to spend nine figures on another pitcher</a>.</p><p>“According to club sources, because of a number of financial considerations, the Giants do not anticipate making the nine-figure investment required to sign Imai — or any of the other top pitchers on the free-agent market,” Baggarly wrote.</p><p>“Instead, the club is focusing on more modestly priced alternatives. They expect to sign at least one starting pitcher, and they plan to add to their bullpen beyond the $1.4 million agreement in place with left-handed reliever Sam Hentges. Well, you've come to the right place.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">MLB</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>After turning in an underwhelming effort in 2025, finishing out the regular season with an <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-news-why-final-standings-are-tough-for-matt-chapman-san-francisco">81-81 record with no playoff berth to show for it</a>, fans in San Francisco are eager to see how Buster Posey will get the Giants back into contention in 2026.</p><p>On paper, the Giants really need some help on the mound, with fans eager to see San Francisco get in on some of the premier pitchers on the market this year, but unfortunately, that just might not be in Posey’s cards.</p><p>Breaking down what he’s been hearing about San Francisco heading into December, ESPN reporter Buster Olney revealed that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/mlb-rumors-giants-predicted-to-sign-tatsuya-imai-over-yankees-dodgers">despite the rumors</a>, the Giants haven’t made a serious push for star Japanese pitcher Tatsuyi Imai, with Posey instead poking around more “<a href="https://x.com/Buster_ESPN/status/1994914027731034269" rel="noopener">modestly priced arms</a>” around the margins.</p><p>A three-time NPB All-Star, Imai is the best arm to be posted out of Japan since Yoshinobu Yamamoto, with the potential to secure a long-term, big-money contract before he throws a single pitch in an MLB game. If the Giants could land Imai, it would be a major boon alongside returning arms like Logan Webb, but at least according to Olney, that might not be in the cards as San Francisco navigates a post-Rafael Devers roster.
