They called him up amid a lost season and gave him the deal after just three games of experience. It buys out two years of unrestricted free agency, which is vital for Baltimore’s front office as they look to improve the rest of the roster. That could lead to the trade of Adley Rutschman, however. The Philadelphia Phillies, San Diego Padres, and Cincinnati Reds should be involved if Rutschman gets dealt.</p><p>Rutschman, the former first overall pick, had an incredible start to his MLB career. He finished second in Rookie of the Year voting in 2022 with a 5.4 bWAR, .806 OPS, and 35 doubles. But the past two seasons have been poor, with a .700 OPS in 233 games entering Sunday’s action. With Basallo coming up and two catchers joining the prospect pipeline via the draft, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-rumors-adley-rutschman-trade-expected-after-samuel-basallo-extension">Rutschman trade rumors have been swirling</a>.</p><p>Which teams should call the Orioles on Rutschman? He is under team control through 2028, which opens up the possible landing spots.</p><h2><b>The Phillies could take a huge swing</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Adley-Rutschman-with-Baltimore-Orioles-2.jpg"><figcaption>Daniel Kucin Jr.-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>At the MLB trade deadline, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/grading-phillies-twins-trade-jhoan-duran">Phillies traded catching prospect Eduardo Tait, among other pieces, for closer Jhoan Duran</a>. That could point to a new contract for JT Realmuto. But he will be 35 years old when his next contract begins, so bringing in a younger option could help get Philly over the hump.</p><p>The Phillies have a loaded offensive core, but they are getting older. Adding Rutschman for three years of arbitration in his 20s would be huge for their lineup and overall roster. More money could be spent on the bullpen and the back-end of the rotation if they made this deal.</p><p>The Orioles would target Gage Wood, the Phillies’ number four overall prospect, or Andrew Painter, their top prospect, to improve their pitching. Additional pieces could be included, but Wood or Painter should be the centerpiece. The Orioles have struggled to secure a top-end rotation arm, and Wood or Painter could become that.</p><h2><b>The Padres are known to make a big trade</b></h2><p>Over the years, Padres general manager AJ Preller has loaded up his team through the trade market. He did it again at the MLB trade deadline, bringing in Mason Miller and a plethora of bats. The one position they do not have a potential All-Star at is catcher, which could be solved by trading for Adley Rutschman.</p><p>The Padres do not have the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/mason-miller-trade-grades-padres-athletics">highly-rated prospects after giving up Leo De Vries for Miller</a>. But a high quantity of prospects could get the Orioles back on track. Righty pitcher Bradgley Rodriguez and outfielder Tirso Ornealas are in AAA for San Diego and could make the Orioles in spring training.</p><p>Rutschman would be a great fit on the Padres, as they are National League contenders looking to keep up with the loaded Los Angeles Dodgers. Improving the catcher position would help their offense and could help their pitching staff take a step forward in 2026.</p><h2><b>Adley Rutschman could put the Reds over the edge</b></h2><p>The National League is loaded, but the small-market Cincinnati Reds are knocking on the door. Just 1.5 games behind the New York Mets, they could sneak into the postseason this year. Whether they do or not, they should be looking to make additions this offseason. But, they likely won’t spend money in free agency. So, a trade for Adley Rutschman should be on the table.</p><p>Tyler Stephenson and Jose Trevino are both solid catchers and under contract for 2026. But Stephenson’s team control expires after the 2026 season, and Rutschman could be an improvement on their current setup. It would be a big bet, as it would require sending out Stephenson, but Cincy has to make one to make a deep run in the postseason.</p><p>The Reds’ strength is pitching, so dealing AAA pitcher Chase Petty should not be a concern. He is their seventh-ranked prospect, but may not have a lane to make the 2026 roster. Petty would have a great chance to make the Orioles, making this swap a beneficial one for both.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Once considered one of the best catchers in the league, Rutchsman struggled with injuries recently. That, combined with a dip in his form, had fans worried that the star might be traded soon.</p><p>With <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-news-baltimore-owner-hints-at-more-extensions-after-samuel-basallo-contract-move">Basallo getting a team-friendly contract extension recently</a>, it seems more and more likely that Rutschman is on his way out. Bob Nightengale reports that it’s more than likely that <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2025/08/24/guardians-mlb-gambling-investigation-emmanuel-clase-luis-ortiz/85804280007" rel="noopener">the catcher will don a new jersey next season</a> after the recent events.</p><p>“There will be no bigger position player on the trade block this winter than Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman,” Nightengale reports. “Rutschman became expendable once the Orioles signed 21-year-old catcher Samuel Basallo to a team-friendly eight-year, $67 million contract that won’t pay him more than $1 million annually until 2029. ”</p><p>There’s still an avenue for Rutschman to stay with the Orioles: Nightengale notes that the older catcher could make a move towards first base or as a part-time catcher. Still, Rutschman has good enough trade value that the Orioles could just shop the catcher to a willing team.</p><p>This season, Rutschman is hitting at a .227 clip with a slightly below-average OPS of .684. His performance behind the plate has lagged a bit as well: StatCast’s metrics show that most of his catching stats has gotten lower since his stellar rookie season. Rutschman’s value was his ability to be an elite hitter while being one of the best defensive catchers in the league. Now that he’s struggling on both ends, the catcher needs to reinvent himself.</p><p>His potential replacement, Basallo, has been one of the most highly-regarded prospects in the MLB. He’s played in six games so far this season in the majors. The majority of the starting lineup is homegrown and under contract for at least the next few seasons. The most recent addition to the big-league roster is catcher Samuel Basallo, who was rewarded after his promotion with an eight-year contract extension. Team beat writer Roch Kubatko spoke to Orioles owner David Rubenstein about the extension, <a href="https://x.com/masnRoch/status/1959322645700432348" rel="noopener">then shared the owner’s thoughts</a> on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>“David Rubenstein on Samuel Basallo extension: ‘We’re committed to doing more of these things as soon as we can,’” reported Kubatko on Saturday.</p><p>It’s clear that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-news-baltimore-talks-sold-billionaire-david-rubenstein">Rubenstein and his front office,</a> led by GM Mike Elias, want to continue building the O’s into a perennial playoff contender. While Baltimore reached the postseason in each of the prior two campaigns before this year, injuries and ineffectiveness doomed the Orioles to a tumble down the stands. Manager Brandon Hyde was fired earlier this season to try and provide a boost, but that did not happen. However, his excellent season in the minors, coupled with injuries to Adley Rutschman and Gary Sanchez, have led to the 21-year-old finally making his debut at Camden Yards. Now that he’s here, Basallo has shown why it’s possible that Elias could consider trading Rutschman or another piece this winter.</p><p>The Orioles’ biggest need is for an ace-level starting pitcher. He is also a professor of sociology.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Baltimore Orioles</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>On Friday, the Baltimore Orioles signed catcher <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-news-baltimore-top-prospect-massive-67-million-extension">Samuel Basallo to an eight-year $67 million deal</a>. A massive move after proving himself in only four games.</p><p>But it turns out this wasn’t his first rodeo. In 2021, Basallo <a href="https://x.com/kileymcd/status/1958893834621833305" rel="noopener">had a deal on the table</a> with the New York Yankees, but it fell through, per Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.</p><p>That January, the Yankees worked something out with Basallo while he was an amateur player. However, they ended up signing pitcher Gerrit Cole as a free agent.</p><p>In the process, the Yankees lost $1 million in their international signing pool. As a result, they had to let Basallo go.</p><p>Ultimately, the Orioles signed Basallo to a $1.3 million deal. In his four games, Basallo is batting .286 with four hits and five RBIs.</p><p>Before that, he batted .270 with 73 hits, 49 runs scored, 23 home runs, and 67 RBIs in the minor leagues.</p><p>On Aug. 17, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-news-top-prospect-emotional-dad-delivers-mlb-promotion">Basallo was called up to the Major Leagues by his father</a>. In his first game, he went 1-for-4 and was hit by a pitch.</p><p>As a result, Basallo became the first Orioles player in history to get on base in his first at-bat via a hit by a pitch.</p><p>In his second game, Basallo became the first franchise player to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-news-promising-prospect-pulls-off-feat-not-seen-before-in-baltimore-history">drive in two RBIs in his first two games</a>.</p><h2><b>The historic nature of the Samuel Basallo deal</b></h2><p>The deal rewarded to Basallo is historic for a multitude of reasons. It is the largest pre-arbitration deal <a href="https://www.espn.com/contributor/jeff-passan/9b1eadfcd8892" rel="noopener">awarded to a catcher</a> in MLB history, per Jeff Passan of ESPN.</p><p>After three years, players are eligible for arbitration. Also, the Orioles are being particularly ambitious in maximizing the international market as well as a rare occurrence of giving out a long term deal.</p><p>Furthermore, the Orioles are looking to make Basallo are core player for the franchise.
