The question everyone would be wondering ahead of a decisive World Series showdown is how Shohei Ohtani would be used. Apparently, <a href="https://x.com/BNightengale/status/1984038625261306287" rel="noopener">LA is open to all options</a>.</p><p>“Dodgers manager Dave Roberts says everything is on the table for Shohei Ohtani in a potential Game 7, including being a closer, an opener, playing the OF, everything,” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported on X. One cannot look ahead to Saturday, especially given the relentless nature of this Toronto Blue Jays squad, but imaginations are bound to run wild when arguably the most talented player the baseball world has ever seen is at the forefront.</p><p>Los Angeles as a unit struggled to manufacture offense in the previous two games, but Ohtani’s shortcomings are naturally going to stand out more than that of everyone else. Following an <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-shohei-ohtani-proves-inevitable-game-3-tying-vs-blue-jays">awe-inspiring Game 5 performance</a>, which saw him get walked five consecutive times after notching two home runs and four total hits, the three-time MVP went 0-for-7 across Games 4 and 5.</p><h2><b>Dodgers may need everything that Shohei Ohtani has to offer</b></h2><p>While the Dodgers have multiple guys who can conceivably step up, including fellow future Hall of Famers Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman, it is hard to envision the reigning champions outlasting a balanced Toronto lineup unless Ohtani snaps out of this mini-funk. Of course, the batter’s box is not the only place that fans would anticipate seeing him in during a potential Game 7.</p><p>The right-handed pitcher last took the mound in LA’s 6-2 Game 4 loss, allowing four runs on six hits in six innings of work. Roberts has yet to utilize him in <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-dave-roberts-shohei-ohtani-relief-appearance-world-series">a bullpen role</a>, and if he decides to do so moving forward, a big change would have to be made. Once a player enters the action as a reliever, he cannot revert to being a designated hitter for the rest of the night. Shohei Ohtani would have to slide into the outfield in order to remain in the game as a hitter.</p><p>Although the 31-year-old has played in the outfield only seven times in his MLB career, the Dodgers would evidently trust him to play some defense if necessary. USA Today columnist Bob Nightengale alluded to the possibility of an Ohtani <a href="https://x.com/BNightengale/status/1983640110710333658" rel="noopener">relief appearance</a> when speaking to manager Dave Roberts.</p><p>“Dave Roberts confirms that Shohei Ohtani would be available for relief in Game 6 or Game 7,” Nightengale wrote on X.</p><p>This would be something historic, as Ohtani has never pitched out of the bullpen in the majors. However, he does have some experience, having been the closer for Team Japan in the final game of the World Baseball Classic against the USA.</p><p>Ohtani has produced mixed results as a pitcher in the playoffs. In his first game against the Philadelphia Phillies, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-how-shohei-ohtani-fared-first-mlb-playoffs-pitching-start" rel="noopener">Ohtani led the Dodgers to victory,</a> going six innings while allowing three earned runs, three hits, and striking out nine. After Game 4, Guerrero <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/46763962/2025-world-series-vladimir-guerrero-jr-vlad-toronto-blue-jays" rel="noopener">spoke to the media</a> about what it meant to hit that home run off the Dodgers’ two-way star.</p><p>“It was very important for me to hit that home run, and from that point on, we got going,” Guerrero said, via ESPN. “And I know basically myself and him (Ohtani), we are the talk of the series, but when we are between those two lines, we’re competing.”</p><p>When Guerrero came up to the plate, the Dodgers led 1-0 in the top of the third inning. After Isiah Kiner-Falefa grounded out to start the inning, Nathan Lukes singled to right-center field to set up the showdown with Ohtani. Guerrero then took a 2-1 sweeping slider to deep left field for a two-run home run to give the Jays the lead. With the home run, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-vladimir-guerrero-jr-hr-shohei-ohtani-world-series-record">Guerrero set a series record,</a> as the Blue Jays have four go-ahead home runs while trailing in the MLB Playoffs.</p><p>The home run helped the Jays take the lead and gave Toronto all the momentum. It was also a big boost for the Jays, as they came into this series and Game 4 as heavy underdogs, especially against Ohtani.</p><p>“It felt good that I could hit that homer against him,” Guerrero added.</p><p>Guerrero has been excellent throughout the entire playoffs. He hit .529 in the ALDS and then hit .385 in the ALCS. So far, Guerrero is batting .368 in the World Series. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-john-schneider-vladimir-guerrero-jr-game-4-homer-toronto">Guerrero home run sparked the Jays</a>, as they shed the offensive struggles they endured the night before, proceeding to add four more runs in the seventh inning as insurance to prevent almost any chance of this game going to extra innings after the 18-inning Game 3 marathon.</p><p>With the win, Guerrero now will focus on helping the Jays attempt to win Game 5 before the series shifts back to Toronto. After the performance, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-shohei-ohtani-vows-to-turn-page-after-world-series-game-4-loss-blue-jays">Ohtani vowed to bounce back,</a> and there are indications that he <a href="https://www.latimes.com/sports/dodgers/story/2025-10-29/hernandez-column-on-dodgers-world-series-game-4" rel="noopener">could pitch again</a> in the Fall Classic, according to LA Times writer Dylan Hernandez.</p><p>“Of course, I’d like to prepare to be available for every game in case I’m needed,” Ohtani said in Japanese to the Times.</p><p>It would be a first for Ohtani, who has never pitched out of the bullpen. Significantly, he was coming off a fantastic Game 3, where he reached base a World Series record nine times. But while he is unlikely to make another start, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/will-dodgers-shohei-ohtani-be-available-to-pitch-anymore-in-world-series">Ohtani is available to pitch at some point</a> in the World Series. Not only did he struggle on the mound, but he also struggled at the plate.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-shane-bieber-ends-shohei-ohtani-streak">Ohtani’s on-base streak ended in Game 4,</a> as he went 0 for 3 with a walk and two strikeouts. Although he will get an immediate shot at redeeming himself at the plate in Game 5, he might have to wait for a chance to pitch again.</p><p>There is also <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-angels/mlb-news-shohei-ohtani-rule-other-major-changes-set-for-2022-regular-season">the ‘Ohtani rule’</a> that allows him to hit and pitch at the same time, while also keeping him in the game when he exits as a starter. However, that rule does not apply if he were to come in as a middle reliever. If the Dodgers were to bring him in as a middle reliever, they would forfeit the designated hitter spot once he leaves the game.</p><p>While Ohtani has never pitched in relief in the majors, he has pitched in relief at the World Baseball Classic. In fact, Ohtani was the final reliever for Team Japan as he shut down the door against Team USA in the finals.
